If you watch the catcher, she takes a legal position in front of the plate, not blocking it. The throw is offline, and she goes with the throw, catching the ball at almost the same instant there is contact. I see incidental contact, and a tag to the side of the helmet, with R3's head impacting the ground.
I like how the guy said that the throw to the catcher was perfect, but she had to jump and with her arm all the way out to catch the damn ball. That’s how she ended up hurting her arm in the 1st place.
In her day, Lisa Fernandez was the most dominant softball player in the world. She was a lights out pitcher with so many no-hitters, and she was the NCAA BATTING CHAMPION. There will never be another like her.
This is clearly not obstruction you can't just think its obstruction because you are out... this runner is nailed by a good throw, and as far as her injury goes this is why you are taught not to slide into home this way. The catcher was in the action of going towards the ball it throws obstruction out the window. If she slides feet first on the inside of the bag and sweep tags I bet she would've been safe.
No obstruction here, just a great play by the catcher. Followed the throw offline which took her into the runner, which is not obstruction, and was able to hold on to the ball through the collision. Not to mention she had the awareness to throw down to third to get the double play. Impressive.
Uncle Steve + If the ball was never thrown to the catcher then the runner would have had to go around her just to reach base so yes it's obstruction. The pass can lead you into the lane and you can block the lane when yoh have the ball but not before. The catcher did a great job of obstructing without it being noticeably obvious, but she still did it.
When this incident occurred in the 2017 NCAA tournament, it was a clean out at the plate. The Obstruction rule was added for 2018 as a result of this play to help protect the players from this kind of contact. The catcher (or any other fielder) is not allowed to use her body to prevent the base-runner from reaching the plate (or base) without control of the ball. Once the catcher has control of the ball, she is allowed to block the path to the plate. In this game, the catcher was standing between the runner and the plate from the beginning, which forced the runner outside the baseline to have an open line to the plate. The errant throw by the shortstop led the catcher's glove into the path of the runner (who had already been forced outside of the base-line by the catcher's positioning), which resulted in the nasty shot to the head.
Where the catcher stands is irrelevant. The catcher cannot block the plate entirely, and they must leave a clear path to the plate until they have possession of the ball. Otherwise, it is Obstruction. In this case, it appears that a small part of the plate may have been left open until the catcher extended her glove into the path of the base-runner to make the catch. Copy/Paste straight from the NCAA rule-book: Rule 9.5.1 Obstruction occurs when a defensive player, not in possession of the ball nor in the act of fielding a batted ball, impedes a batter’s attempt to make contact with a pitch or impedes the progress of any runner who is legally running bases on a live ball. It can be intentional or unintentional. It is obstruction if a defensive player is blocking the whole base/plate or base path without the ball and/or the runner does not have a clear path to the base/plate. (See also Rule 12.13.) Notes: 1. Once in possession of the ball, the defensive player can be positioned between the runner and the base/plate. 2. Obstruction may be ruled even though there is no physical contact. 3. The runner may still be called out if she was clearly beaten by the throw. 4. In past years, coaches taught their players to block the base, catch the ball and make the tag. Now defensive players must catch the ball, block the base and make the tag. 5. Obstruction can occur on a force or tag play.
She got hurt from her face hitting the dirt. The throw would have hit her in the head and been much worse, and the catcher wasn't blocking the basepath at all nor was it a dirty tag. Nothing wrong there
Absolutely a fair ball play. The runner even went outside the baseline requiring the catcher to reach to her left. Fernandez should be banned from coaching for contact with an official, she is a real hot head.
It is not obstruction because she was going for the ball to catch it. For it to be obstructing the plate she would have to not have the ball and blocking the runner. Since the throw led her to catch the ball in line with the runner she had to go to where the ball was thrown which put her in the path of the runner. Ergo not obstructing.
Personally, I dont think its obstruction. She happened to be in the way when she was trying to catch the ball. If you look at the position she was in when she caught it, she was stretching to catch it. That looked rough though Also good play. Oh and dont come at me k thx.
AshFilm73 i agree she didnt try to but she was. I think she was unaware of her positioning because she was straddling the path from the beginning and never left that position. The catcher just reach with her glove but her feet stay in the same spots just dropping the knee.
I paused it at 2:13 and can see that the runner has a path to the base (via a slide between the catcher's legs) and the throw took the catcher into the runner. It just happens to lead to a hard tag. Great job by the home plate umpire. And catcher for getting the ball to third.
I think the umpires didn't call obstruction was because the runner didn't break for home right away. At 2:10-2:13 the catcher is obstructing the runner's path to home plate but the umpire didn't call it because the runner didn't break immediately and the throw was to the third base side of home right into the runner.
idc what y’all say, that coach getting tossed was good. She boosted morale and showed that if her girls felt wronged, she’d back em. great coaching. the girl should have slid at home though, could have avoided that nasty tag
The catcher had to obstruct the plate because the throw was way off. I don't know a lot about baseball, but I can see both sides of the argument. The catcher had to go there to catch the ball, but in the process did happen to obstruct the runner from getting a clear line to the base.
The ball hit the catcher's glove which hit the runner's face at the same time. It wasn't a faceplant, which is painful but rather getting hit in the face with the ball which is even more painful.
She was standing over the plate covering basicly the entire basepath to the plate even before the throw came in, then she dropped to one knee and blocked the entire baseline and some after the throw started to come in (see 2:27-2:30). In my eyes thats obstruction (regardless of whether the throw brought her over the basepath, which a throw from the right side of the field like this one shouldn't anyways, that is if your competent enough to know to move up the third baseline for throws to your left without impeding the basepath). In fastpitch catchers should be used to standing infront of the plate and laying the tag, not over it. That'll piss everyteam you play off, give you a bad rep and umpires will be even more apt to call obstruction on you. Plus players will be all the more ready to truck you if your impeding the basebath entirely like this catcher did.
If your body is in position on top of the plate you must have the ball under control so it is easily obstruction. You can´t attempt to block the plate, even with the ball in flight coming in your direction. I am a catcher and I have been called for this rule many times. I'm not sure, you see the runner complaining to the ump. You're right that she was probably complaining about obstruction, but the catcher was playing the ball - sure she probably didn't allow as much space as possible for the runner to slide, but she did leave enough.
Ouch. Why are people hating on them for not being athletic or for not sucking it up?? I play softball, I know that injuries happen, it's inevitable, and they do hurt a lot.
Obstruction should have been called imo. The catcher was blocking the plate before the ball was thrown or she had possession. Umpire missed this one, had to throw the coach out for it.
Wtf was the coach mad at? She hit her own face on the floor.. the throw took her into the runner its not any wrong doing by catcher!! She should be mad at herself for not teaching her players how to slide
What I found most disconcerting about the whole ejection scene, was the fan's response at the following game. They glorified Fernandez, they tried turning her into a hero with t-shirts with her mug on the front. Are you fucking kidding me???!!!! She broke several rules, including physical contact with a game official, and you fans put her up on a pedestal??? You made her out to be the victim???? Her actions removed her from her team at a most critical point, a World Series run, and you try to make her a hero????!!!! What the fuck is wrong with people?????!!!!! She broke the rules and stabbed her team in the back, and you'll think she's a victim of the umpires, and I'm sure the umpires being male had a lot to do with it. This world is going to shit! It is upside down, completely backwards.
Why are people saying women are bad at sports . All of these runners saw their chance to steal the next base , it just so happened that the team on defense saw what was happening. Nothing is wrong. And also I believe it was obstruction once her leg came down for that tag the runner couldn’t reach for the base . Just a personal opinion.
This is not obstruction, here’s how the rule reads; “Baserunners are generally permitted to run from base to base without being physically blocked or hindered by a fielder. The only time that a fielder is not obligated to "get out of the way" of a baserunner is when the fielder is fielding or in possession of the ball.”
She wasnt blocking the plate she went to where the ball was. If she was blocking the plate, how did the UCLA player get tagged in the face from behind the catcher. I think what you mean to say is it was an illegal tag, which in my opinion and 14 years of playing softball and being a catcher, is true. That was an illegal tag and a bad call at home.
There was no obstruction here at all, the ball took the catcher into the baseline. In almost 20 years of playing baseball I've never been called for obstructing (yes all those years of playing have been behind the plate).
Catcher has a right to catch the ball. The runner should have watch which way the catcher was moving ,and stretching for the catch. The base runner should have read that instead of running with head head down ,and slid to the inside ,simple as that .She would have been safe .stupid baserunning legal tag. stop crying. Fundamentals win games. Not showing off being, stupid, not everyone gets a medal ,millennials.
Have faith, a part of any real players repertoire is applied knowledge of the rules and this particular instance is obstruction by the catcher. You don't have to take my word for it though, take the NCAA's verbatim ruling and try to tell me with a straight face it wasn't obstruction hereafter: 9.5.1 (truncated)... impedes the progress of any runner who is legally running bases on a live ball. It can be intentional or unintentional. It is obstruction if a defensive player is blocking the whole base/plate or base path without the ball and/or the runner does not have a clear path to the base/plate.
Perfect Storm the way I see it .The catcher was straddling the left-sided off the plate .The throw came wide to the right side and high. The catcher had a stretch to catch the ball .She has a perfect right to catch the ball . If the runner was reading how the catcher was stretching, instead of with her head down she could have slipped it inside and been safe. It's softball, you have to have the right to catch the ball. What was she going to do just let the ball go past without catching it. Learn the fundamentals of base running and, all you people don't have to run to the rule book so much. My God it's a bang-bang play "reaction". The base runner was the only one to have a couple of seconds to think about where to go. The Umpire called it a hundred percent right.
Have Faith freeze frame it at 0:15 and tell me that the catcher isn't already in the base path of home plate BEFORE having the ball in hand muchless the throw leaving the second basewomans hand. She's hovering right over the plate at that point in time, then tell me at the beginning of 0:16 the catcher - without the ball in hand, isn't still over the plate. The ball was poorly thrown as it was an afterthought by the second basewomam and the catcher made an athletic - albeit illegal, play which took her out from in front of home plate and directly into the runner. It's not the base runners fault, sports in general are changing because folks are whining about "injuries" and one issue right now is collisions at home plate and how the catcher is "defenseless" against a base runner whose got time to think about what he\she wants to do.
Perfect Storm come on man ,the balls coming from the infielder between 2nd and 1st it's coming a little high and wide she has to reach for it, she's reacting she has a right to catch the ball . What is the catcher supposed to do just stand there. She was on the left side of the base if the ball was thrown perfectly she would have caught it and tagged her out. Catcher did not intentionally block the plate on purpose .She was reacting to the high and wide throw. I've seen catches block the plate and it pisses me off ,this wasn't the case ,this was reaction. I do respect your opinion, and it's nice to disagree with someone without any bad words or anger. ✌️
Since the ball got to the plate before she touched the plate, it is not obstruction. Has she slid foot first, she likely would have earned the obstruction call because the tag would have been too high/too late. As it stands, this is the correct call.
signelengis incorrect. The key is the catcher was already blocking the base path before the ball was even thrown. The catcher should have been setup in fair territory in front of the plate with the ability to swipe back at the runner. Why Fernandez was pissed is because the same call went against UCLA earlier in the tournament, it was called obstruction on the UCLA catcher. Umps who are inconsistent are the worst.
Correction guys. T Jones your partly right. it is obstruction, very close but obstruction. By the exact time the runner “attempted or able to”or to slide or reach home, the catcher was “fully” blocking the path and the ball was not in her glove. So she should of been safe from obstruction. But it was a close call and you can’t really blame the Unpire unless he/she has replay, or help from the base umps. Because in real speed, it looked as if she got around it and tagged the plate as legally required. But. No. Catcher as blocking the plate. (The reason why she has to be blocking the plate when the runner is attempting or able to attempt is because that is how you determine that a fielder can do whatever he/she wants. There’s no rule stating the fielder can be in the bag or plate blocking the baseline. You need to be blocking the baseline of the runner. So the runner needs to be attempting to touch he base/plate or close enough so she/he can determine exactly what to do.
The tag was dirty, intentionally to the face, and with unnecessary force, thus violating the NCAA rules of conduct. The catcher should have been ejected immediately for that.
No obstruction. The catcher was reaching for an errant throw that carried her into the path of the runner, and by rule, that’s not obstruction. Fernandez earned her two-game suspension.
@@jessicamelvin5021 Not until she has possession. When she blocked the plate she was not in possession of the ball. This was a close play, but obstruction would have been the correct call. The NCAA clarified this rule several years ago. This was the 2017 rule change recommendation which was adopted. Obstruction (Rules 9.4.1, 9.5 and 12.13.1). (1) Recommendation. Changes the definition of obstruction to when a defensive player, not in possession of the ball or in the act of fielding a batted ball, impedes a batter's attempt to make contact with a pitch or impedes the progress of any runner who is legally running bases on a live ball. It is obstruction if a defensive player is blocking the whole base/plate or base path without the ball and/or the runner does not have a clear path to the base/plate. (2) Effective date. Immediately. (3) Rationale. To allow a base runner a clear path to the base if the defensive player is receiving a throw and does not have possession of the ball in her glove or hand. Defensive players can no longer cause the runner to alter her path to the base by blocking the base/plate or base path without the ball. Removes the vagueness of “in the act of catching” the ball.
reformcongress there’s new rules bro. You can’t be in the way at all unless you already have the ball. Even if you’re trying to catch it you can’t be in the way at all
To catch the ball, you have to move. YOu can't just let the ball go by. You know that and that's why there wasn't any call. UCLA ran the bases poorly on that play. She deserved to get ejected. There should have been NO CALL! TRUST ME. I KNOW!
reformcongress the new rule book says you CANNOT be in the way or make contact with the runner unless you already have the ball in your possession!!! I play D1 softball i would know dumbass. Even if you’re trying to catch the ball and you make contact with the runner it’s obstruction because you don’t have complete control or possession of the ball. Know your facts dipshit
No way is that obstruction at home plate. The catcher was moving to where the throw was going, which the catcher has the right to do. It is incidental contact and all part of the play.
She had a problem with the stance the catcher took during the play after her throw to second base. Her feet were positioned in front of the plate and round the batter's box before she took the return throw.
watch the replay at the second half of the video. before the ball is even throw the catcher widens her stance over the plate. that right there is obstructing the path.
If this were baseball, the runner barrels into the catcher instead of this matador baserunner trying to go around the catcher and tag the back of home plate.
She was blocking the plate. When you're catching the ball at home you can't stand over the plate. You're supposed to be in front of it. That wasn't a clean play
Chris Santiago she has the right to reach over but the point is she was standing over home plate the whole time. If she would've been where she was supposed too, in front of home plate then when she reached it wouldn't had hit her. If no ball was thrown the runner would've still had to try to go around the catcher's leg to touch home plate. That's why she sled to the outside.
Fatt Bison ok u can also blame the runner for making such a boneheaded slide. The moment the catcher had to reach for the ball the runner decided to slide and the slide wasnt even an outside slide until after she got tagged
Fatt Bison another thing to point out is that obstruction only happens if contact is made between player prior to the ball being in a defenders possession
And the asshole adding his. Good thing I make a lot of money and can afford to have my southern accent without feeling the need to troll. What's the matter? NO picture? Hmmmm, it makes me wonder why?

If you watch the catcher, she takes a legal position in front of the plate, not blocking it. The throw is offline, and she goes with the throw, catching the ball at almost the same instant there is contact. I see incidental contact, and a tag to the side of the helmet, with R3's head impacting the ground.

That catcher is a hell of a gamer. Perfect throw home from 2nd and the catcher assisted a double play hurt, wow!
ya that was really sexy and amazing
The runner hurt her face on the ground, not the tag. What a great job by the catcher!
No obstruction here, just a great play by the catcher. Followed the throw offline which took her into the runner, which is not obstruction, and was able to hold on to the ball through the collision. Not to mention she had the awareness to throw down to third to get the double play. Impressive.

It is
obstruction if a defensive player is blocking the whole base/plate or base path without the ball and/or the runner does not have a clear path to the base/plate. (See also Rule 12.13.)
Notes:
1. Once in possession of the ball, the defensive player can be positioned between the runner and the base/plate.
2. Obstruction may be ruled even though there is no physical contact.
3. The runner may still be called out if she was clearly beaten by the throw.

Contact with the home plate umpire will cost that coach. The NCAA does not take that lightly.
Great defensive play- no obstruction.
Catcher had the right to reach for the throw.
If that was a block lets just stop playing the game. The throw took her into the line of the runner. It was a perfectly executed play by the defense.

Great play catch! The runner got hurt slamming her head into the ground during the slide.
Jack Jones no it was a glove to the face she’s just too sensitive to take a hit
She didn’t try to obstruct, she was literally following the ball. There isn’t much you can do about it. It’s a hard call to make.

Why are people hating on them for not being athletic or for not sucking it up?? I play softball, I know that injuries happen, it's inevitable, and they do hurt a lot.
Great DP. Catcher was out in front of the plate and reached back to tag the runner in the head. Great athleticism.
Lisa Fernandez just can't get over the perfect throw....In this case....SHE IS WRONG!
She totally did that to herself when she slammed down and didn't catch her weight. You were already on your way down anyways.
Obstruction should have been called imo. The catcher was blocking the plate before the ball was thrown or she had possession. Umpire missed this one, had to throw the coach out for it.
no look again
Wtf was the coach mad at? She hit her own face on the floor.. the throw took her into the runner its not any wrong doing by catcher!! She should be mad at herself for not teaching her players how to slide
ESPN needs to hire these two to commentat games immediately
The home plate umpire she made contact with is female.
You have to remember that in liberal California, making a rulebreaker out to be a victim is totally acceptable.
The throw had nothing to do with her head, her head hitting the dirt is what did it!!!!!!!!
Stolp game what a great way to put it, I totally agree
Stolp game its an actual tactic though. Running runs off first hoping to distract, so rubber can run home. Do it on my team all the time
This is not obstruction, here’s how the rule reads; “Baserunners are generally permitted to run from base to base without being physically blocked or hindered by a fielder. The only time that a fielder is not obligated to "get out of the way" of a baserunner is when the fielder is fielding or in possession of the ball.”
this whole play was messed up. the pitch was bad, catchers were blocking plates.. im glad ucla won this
She wasnt blocking the plate she went to where the ball was.
Andrew Calzia wow, why aren't you in the hall of fame?
The catcher was blocking the baseline that's obstruction
The catcher was blocking
@Robin Siwula you clearly don't know wtf you're talking about so sssshhhhhhhh.
That umpire was waiting her entire life to throw someone out
2016 I met Lisa Fernandez at a hitting and coaching clinic for my father and I. It was loads of fun and I even have a signed ball
lol I thought she got hit by the catcher in the face no she just tried to slide but went forehead first into the ground lol makes me laugh
Those women in college softball are savages playing hard n tough.
It def wasn't a perfect throw tho.
Clean play by catcher.
Have Faith you're right, fundamentals of obstruction, catcher is clearly positioned herself over the plate before the ball got there
Have faith, a part of any real players repertoire is applied knowledge of the rules and this particular instance is obstruction by the catcher. You don't have to take my word for it though, take the NCAA's verbatim ruling and try to tell me with a straight face it wasn't obstruction hereafter:
9.5.1 (truncated)... impedes the progress of any runner who is legally
running bases on a live ball. It can be intentional or unintentional. It is obstruction if a defensive player is blocking
the whole base/plate or base path without the ball and/or the runner does not have a clear path to the base/plate.
That play was a pretty lit play
tag was legit... the baserunner bounced her face on teh dirt... that's what hurt her the most
The tag was dirty, intentionally to the face, and with unnecessary force, thus violating the NCAA rules of conduct. The catcher should have been ejected immediately for that.
That is a hard call for obstruction could have went either way but all in all a great play defensively
No obstruction. The catcher was reaching for an errant throw that carried her into the path of the runner, and by rule, that’s not obstruction. Fernandez earned her two-game suspension.
That was an obstruction catcher was blocking the plate
Hugo Munoz the catcher is allowed to block the plate if she has possession of the ball
Changes the definition of obstruction to when a defensive player,
not in possession of the ball or in the act of fielding a batted ball, impedes a batter's
attempt to make contact with a pitch or impedes the progress of any runner who is
legally running bases on a live ball. It is obstruction if a defensive player is blocking
the whole base/plate or base path without the ball and/or the runner does not have a
clear path to the base/plate.
(2) Effective date. Immediately.
(3) Rationale. To allow a base runner a clear path to the base if the defensive player is
receiving a throw and does not have possession of the ball in her glove or hand.
Defensive players can no longer cause the runner to alter her path to the base by
blocking the base/plate or base path without the ball. Removes the vagueness of “in the
act of catching” the ball.
Lia Fernandez looked like a BUFFOON
Some of the worst base running I’ve seen in awhile
It was a bad slide. If she's on the line because of a bad throw you still have to slide under the catcher.
Head first slides are for hotdogs and Pete rose.not borderline models from LA
She knows what she is fucking fighting for
Dumb coaching and base running, so I’m going to get thrown out so I look like I know what I’m doing.
That wasn't obstruction. She moved to catch the ball. It was bad baserunning by UCLA.
reformcongress there’s new rules bro. You can’t be in the way at all unless you already have the ball. Even if you’re trying to catch it you can’t be in the way at all
You can move to catch the ball... and it was poor baserunning by UCLA and they should not have been rewarded for it.
reformcongress yeah you can move... but you still can’t be in the way of the runner AT ALL. Trust me I would know
To catch the ball, you have to move.
You cant see how she stands over the plate way before the throw ever comes. Its clear as day
We can’t have umpires being held accountable. For some reason that’s not allowed in sports!
Why was Coach Fernandez upset? It was clearly the right call unless if I am unaware of some kind of illegal contact.
What the coach should really be upset about is the terrible base running!!!
I only see a great physical play. If this were baseball, nobody bats an eye
If this were baseball, the runner barrels into the catcher instead of this matador baserunner trying to go around the catcher and tag the back of home plate.
As soon as I heard her talk, I thought to myself. "Here comes the smokers cough."
Jeez. Just got the angle on the catcher injury. Jammed her arm into her shoulder socket. Ouch!!
The throw took the catchers glove right into the runner no obstruction
She was blocking the plate. When you're catching the ball at home you can't stand over the plate. You're supposed to be in front of it. That wasn't a clean play
Fatt Bison hold on you do realize that she had to reach over to catch the ball at home right?
Chris Santiago she was standing on top of the plate before the ball was thrown. Then the throw just made it worse
The girl that stole home was fine af
Beautiful routine Play!!!!!!! That was a close play.....but she was out....no doubt about it!!!! That catcher is the real deal!!!!
I have a tournament tomorrow and I’m a catcher why I watching this 😂😂
Nothing blatant by catcher nor runner......Fernandez got stupid, just stupid.
That’s a great play by the catcher. What’s the problem?🤷🏽♂️
Perfect throw and catch that catchers a beast
Love a coach that stand up for there players hell yes
How is that obstruction? She’s out. Great catch/tag
The ball arrived before the runner. So the catcher had every right to be where she was.
Catcher saved her face tbh
her head bounced off the ground, the tag was just a touch. lol. either way, i love women's softball.
HunkpapaLakota cause the women who play are hot
She was blocking the base
The Beverly Hillbillies adding their commentary.
And the asshole adding his. Good thing I make a lot of money and can afford to have my southern accent without feeling the need to troll. What's the matter? NO picture? Hmmmm, it makes me wonder why?
