This is 1,000% on the umpires. They lost control of the game and they refused to apply common sense. As a result you have coaches on the field, players on the field and the opposing team challenging the team on the field. Why? Because the umpires refused to make a decision that the weather was negatively impacting the game and the safety of the players.

There is nothing wrong with a rain delay to make sure there is fair play. Those pictures made it clear. I have never seen such terrible pitches back to back in softball outside of a bad middle school team. Terrible umpiring.
The home plate ump must be new to D1 because it seems he tried to get the group together immediately going towards the 2nd base ump and looks like he made the decision alone. I don't understand why if after the Umps say to play (which was wrong) one of the players in outfield (umps never watch outfielders) just fake an injury ncaa softball has no time limit so this would have given the Umps more time to get together rather than feel rushed. Hopefully at That Time a BETTER decision is made. Sucks that any team of player would resort to that, but they NEVER should half too. SMH. Glad Cal Still Won.

I've umpired many games in bad weather and always the concern is for the safety of the players. Hard to tell how hard it's raining on this video but, the field appears to be in good shape. Since it's the last inning, I could see trying to complete the game, especially with the home team down a run. As for the pitcher yelling she can't grip the ball, the rain falls on both teams. I don't like the coach coming out of the dugout to argue and then the plyers getting into it. Easy to see the umpires lost control quickly.

It's dangerous pitching with a rain-slippery ball. Might have been a different story if Cal's pitcher, instead of missing far outside, had plunked the hitter in the ribs.
After the commotion, the Bears would escape the seventh inning and tack on two more runs in the top of the eighth for the final 3-1 margin. Cal finished the Louisiana Classics 4-1. Go Bears!

Cal coach was right.... She couldn't grip the ball..... BUT- as a crafty OLD former pitcher , you CAN make that work in your favor once it subsides.....
I spent many of years coaching softball. The coaches failed this pitcher. We played rain or snow. Yes snow. In practice the girls used whatever ball they were given to pitch. They were not allowed to pick the ball with the best seams. In games with poor weather our girls were told how much they love pitching bad balls. We pumped them up. If an ump asked them if they needed a dry ball we would let the umps know our girls love pitching wet balls. I was not a coach that was cleaning the ball after every pitch. If you could only pitch the ball when it’s was perfect I wasn’t the coach for you. My style worked too. My number one is pitching d1 now. My number 2 is still a senior. She has been all state her first 3 years of high school. Don’t baby the pitchers when young. Have them pitch junk balls. Wet balls. Frozen balls. Anyone can throw a strike with a perfect ball. The confidence gained when they can pitch in any weather, with any ball, can’t be measured.
I played D1 College Softball ALL four years on a Full Scholarship I strongly disagree with you. The pitcher is playing a professional game, specifically with College Softball and therefore necessitates playing with a regulation ball. When the player is preparing to play for College and playing youth ball, then she needs to pitch with regulation balls, especially since it’s high level competitive youth Softball. If the pitcher chooses to play with junk balls in “Sandlot” ball with her friends, then OK. On a regulation field there needs to be regulation equipment and high standards. In my opinion, your coaching is abusive.
Your comment shows that you're clearly not as good of a coach as you think you are 😂😂 Real coaches would know elite pitchers HATE new balls at almost every college game the pitchers "dirty up" the game balls before the game starts and as it goes on. Megan Good, Jailyn Ford, CC Alexander, Syd O'Hara, and more that I've had the pleasure of sharing a dugout with would all say this. All teams practice with "wet" balls I did at the modified level that's really basic coaching that I guarantee every D1 college does too. But you don't seem to grasp the concept of how important grip is for pitching (movement, speed, everything) which is why no pitchers want a new ball. But if you can't grip the ball you can't throw as well. I've played in snow and rain before too but this is D1 top schools playing in an absolute down pour. It wasn't safe for any of the players out there. and yeah the pitcher does have the right to get upset because when its down pouring you not only can't grip the ball for accuracy but also for spin/movement. Throwing fast doesn't get you very far anymore you gotta spin the ball which is incredibly hard to do in heavy rain. Also, the Cajuns did not have to pitch in the same rain conditions. I hate when umps just want to finish a game that they'll play on when it's not safe to play. Player safety should always comes first but this is one of many examples where umps don't really hold true to that. There's a reason you're not coaching college ball at all let alone a good D1 program stop acting like you're a better coach than Cal's staff it took one comment to show you clearly aren't in the same areana
Abusive? Lol. I don’t know what you’re talking about. The balls they were pitching were regulation balls. They just didn’t get to pick through the buckets till they found the perfect balls. That’s abusive? As far as not drying the ball off for them after ever pitch. They didn’t need the ball dried off. They were confident in their ability to throw a wet ball. If you played college ball you know that your pitchers need to stay in a rhythm. How does a pitcher stay in rhythm when changing out the ball after ever pitch? It just turns into a circus and the pitcher loses focus. We took a different approach. Instill the confidence in the players that they can pitch a bad ball. Our girls could pitch any ball. We also didn’t complain about heat, cold, rain, wind, field conditions, umpires, or what time we had to play. How could we complain. The parents had spent so much money to give us the opportunity to play.
@ashley A couple things. I’m not blaming the cal coaches. Learning to pitch a wet ball is something they should be doing when they are young. You could see a little rain broke that pitcher. You agree the players should be doing exactly what I had them doing in practice, but I’m still a bad coach? Heck the one poster said I was abusive. How does that work?
My daughter’s team played Cal 2 years ago. They knelt for the National Anthem. The first time I had witnessed then crap first hand. Had to leave the stadium. Painful as a veteran.
The Louisiana team wanted to play. The California team wanted to protest climate change. Here's an idea. My team isn't used to or isn't good enough to play in the rain, so we should call the game while my team is ahead.
Agree 100%, they were doing everything to keep playing. It’s not like trying to grip a baseball…a wet softball is almost impossible to control, especially when it’s still raining hard lol
I thought we stopped baseball and softball games due to rain, because it creates an unsafe environment? You can't grip the ball, the bat is slick, you can't see the ball, the ground creates havoc with the ball. These officials could have prevented all of this after the first slipped pitch.
Looks like some commenters had specific agendas. Well, here it is - the umps made the first mistake and then covered it up by ejecting coaches and players when all were emotionally charged.
Sportsmanship had nothing to do with anything here. And sportsmanship is a term losers like yourself invented so you could feel good about constantly losing.
Uh, rain delay anyone... Clearly the camera shows light rain. That will affect ball grip. In all fairness though, the Cal coach should've told the umpire they're not continuing to play until the rain stops. If the umpire forfeits the game on their behalf, Cal can appeal to the NCAA.
You have two schools from two different areas culturally. The folks around Louisiana at Lafayette are as conservative as one can be and the people associated with Cal are as liberal as one can be. Sudden storms and heavy rain spurts happen quite often in Lafayette, LA. But it's been raining more often lately in Berkley, CA because of El Nino, so Cal-Berkley's group should also be accustomed to rain. The umpires might have been smart to have the field cleared with a rain delay. Playing on a wet field increases the chance of injuries. Nebraska pitcher Jordy Bahl slipped on a bad wet clay surface at Puerto Vallarta and suffered a season ending ACL injury. You'd think Louisiana's folks wouldn't want to risk injury to any of their players, like UL's star Alexa Langeliers, so the game should have been stopped, with dry sand poured on the infield, pitcher's mound, and home plate.
Babies from California a little rain and they have a meltdown That’s why the entire state is falling apart. They have no work ethic A little rain and they’re crying
The fact that the NCAA created rules for the Assistant HC to be booted for talking about officiating is wild. Just another example of the lack of accountability regarding officiating.
Outstanding acting from the Catching to pretend to pick a argument with the opposing team, to delay the game a little more until the rain has passed. And go on to win the game
Now, what would have happened if the pitcher lost the grip on the ball and it went up an in toward the batter's head instead of down and away? These umpires have a duty to make sure the game is not only played fairly, but also safely. Would the home plate ump be yelling at Louisiana's coach coming out to argue if their batter was unconscious at the plate?
Cal Berkley players having a tantrum you don’t say? Just be glad they didn’t go and lay down on your highways causing unnecessary traffic they like to do that too. See in our state we don’t believe in teaching our youth to deal with stress, the uncontrollable s, emotions etc. mostly everything is handled like you saw the assistant coach doing trying to aggressively yell and scream like that will change anything. Us normal Californians apologies for Cal Berkley they are a lil unhinged most were wired wrong at birth. Don’t mind them.

You sound like a terrible coach if you actually told the umpires you’d prefer bad balls.
1:10 what’s with the tag at home? You damn well knew you didn’t have the ball 😂😂😂😂
Probably habitual
It's not raining but it's clearly raining 😂
EBT class ruins everything. Louisiana has class.
No need for your racism here
@@ish7957 You're the racist--assuming the EBT class is people of color. Wow.
@@ish7957 why did he say that, because they are Hispanic?
Californians that don't get their way
To be fair the reaction is blown out of proportion but ultimately they are right especially when she throws it and nearly kills someone and I hate cal
Yup
Guess who won?? CALIFORNIA lmao
Any surprise on what type went crazy?
You created a youtube page to be a prick lol clown
What do you mean Bubba?
If the field is dry and playable, you play ball. That Cal. coach has no class. Disgraceful.
Well California won so... bothered?
During new umpire training, this should be Exhibit A in the section "What not to do as an umpire"
Looked like the Cal players were upset with the LA dugout all the sudden. Gee I wonder why🤔
California won the game, keep cryin
If you have never played it heavy rain before it greatly changes the game and your ability, hence why most games are not played in the rain.
bad look for California Bears! they cant play under conditions...not our problem. its a you problem!
Didn’t cal end up winning?
CALIFORNIA WON HAHAHAHA
If it’s raining that hard either postpone the game or call it jeez that’s ridiculous
My daughter’s team played Cal 2 years ago. They knelt for the National Anthem. The first time I had witnessed then crap first hand. Had to leave the stadium. Painful as a veteran.
So, as a veteran you don’t support the freedom of speech?
California won the game :) keep cryin
She keep using the towel like it ain't wet from the rain 😂
Coach sets the example. Shame on the coaching staff.
Why does someone always have to hold the person back? I'd just let them go and see what happens. Probably nothing.
The Louisiana team wanted to play. The California team wanted to protest climate change.
Here's an idea. My team isn't used to or isn't good enough to play in the rain, so we should call the game while my team is ahead.
Funny, California WON THE GAME lmao
And almost no one was even there to see it🤷♂️
Meh, still more fans in the stands, then friends you have.
That was some Home Field Cooking from the Umpires, California Def Got Hosed!!!!
Agree 100%, they were doing everything to keep playing. It’s not like trying to grip a baseball…a wet softball is almost impossible to control, especially when it’s still raining hard lol
Good thing California WON the game!!
@@joeblowe3180 did they?? That’s good to know actually haha
The ejection of the assistant coach is automatic per the rules.
Good thing California overcame the garbage and won the game. Lousiana is shameful
Thats the most exciting Softball game Ive ever seen
I said the same ! 😂😂😂
Ball has been played in the rain forever . Lightning is usually the thing stops play . Or absolute monsoons . A-shame they acted like that .
Oh look, who is the one making the biggest scene?
The sister-coach ? What even is that and that one umpire who runs to the catcher....as far the real coaches, they're just dissapointed generals
Pitcher can’t grip it? Time for a new pitcher.
And exactlynwhat would that have accomplished? Pretty foolish comment on your part
Ouch... not a good look... so much for sportsmanship... lead by example coach...
Sportsmanship had nothing to do with anything here. And sportsmanship is a term losers like yourself invented so you could feel good about constantly losing.
Some of the worse umpiring I’ve seen! The very first rain caused wild pitch should have rain delayed the game.
It's a wonder how the team behaves so poorly based on how the assistant coach behaves.
Weird... California ended up winning
At 2:30 timeline why the assistant coach smiling about this fight situation.
She got her verbal licks in
The camera always makes the rain drops appear bigger than they actually are
The announcers were lying about the rain stopping.
Absolutely, I don’t care which team was on the mound.. the conditions were bad enough to cause a serious injury to either pitcher
Most of your comment has nothing to do with the game.
Guess what? California won... that bothers you huh?
Well California won so... what now?
I watch women's softball on ESPN+. If there ever was a group of players that show good sportsmanship I would say it's the softball players.
Babies from California a little rain and they have a meltdown
That’s why the entire state is falling apart.
They have no work ethic
A little rain and they’re crying
CALIFORNIA WON LMAO
"seems I've often heard that kind of talk before"
The assistant coach kinda fine though, I don’t watch baseball/softball so I don’t really know what’s going on but I’m on her side.
Announcers are classless
Tell me why
Great example to set, Coach.
That’s how they roll in Cali. Pathetic if you ask me.
@@TrashyLobsteryou have never played softball in a driving rain. Ump should have called for a rain delay.
@@TrashyLobsteryou are pathetic if you really have an issue with that.
I saw her smirk partway thru the video . Righteous anger is one thing , her's wasn't .
@@TrashyLobster Funny, cause California WON THE GAME lmao
Cal Berkley players having a tantrum you don’t say? Just be glad they didn’t go and lay down on your highways causing unnecessary traffic they like to do that too. See in our state we don’t believe in teaching our youth to deal with stress, the uncontrollable s, emotions etc. mostly everything is handled like you saw the assistant coach doing trying to aggressively yell and scream like that will change anything. Us normal Californians apologies for Cal Berkley they are a lil unhinged most were wired wrong at birth. Don’t mind them.
Yelling at the umpire isn’t unhinged it’s part of the game.
Maybe for morons you ever seen an umpire say oh yeah coach your right I’ll change it. Me either.
California won the game, support your girls coward
California WON the game... that bothers you huh?
That assistant coach proves you can take the girl out of the hood but you can't take the hood out of the girl.
How was she acting hood? Arguing with umpires and refs is pretty common in all sports.
You have a smooth brain
I’m not trying to do this, but it’s blatant. Look at each team… look at the stands and the people in attendance… now look who’s getting cheated.
Berkeley = no class
Well Berkeley won so.... what does that say about Louisiana?
@@joeblowe3180that they still have no class ? Where is the correlation?
Theumph is wrong, Cali should just protest and go home.
I've rarely seen games called on just rain. That wasn't even bad rain
You’ve rarely watched baseball or softball then.
Delays
Cal is pure trash
Why?
Imagine what the losing team must be!
California WON hahaha
If it is Umpire's judgement, they should have at least suspended play
"It's not really raining at all now" I'm sorry? It might not have been raining as hard as it was but anyone with eyes can see it is still raining pretty hard sir...🤨
The umpire is trying to get the full game in and not have any further delays. He probably is in a hurry to get home. But at some point, enough is enough. I too would have pushed it if I too was the umpire.
I didn't realize softball was this boring
That's your problem, the world doesn't cater to people who can't read books without pictures.
