Fix or Finish Something Simple
Many times when we are in a situation where it's easy to be worrying, it's easy to be hung up, it's easy to be procrastinating, it's easy to be maybe confused about what your priorities are or what you need to do.
Sometimes the best thing to do is to aim low and close and get a cheap win, real quick. Like right now.
I'll bet if you looked around your environment you'd find a number of things that would not take you but a few minutes to fix or finish, or to deal with. It’s been kind of, not necessarily bothering you in a big way, but bugging you and you know it's something you need to do at some point. You need to move this over there. You need to take that off the wall. You need to replace a light bulb that's been out. You need to take some WD-40 and lubricate a door, or something that's been squeaking.
There's a number of things like that I'll bet, in your environment. And those are just really great to get some cheap quick wins for that. I know that sounds really mundane, but I've discovered there's magic in the mundane.
Many times I just need to stop and go finish something just because it allows my brain to clear itself, allows me to get positive, get focused, and actually many times what happens is as I'm doing that or certainly if finished doing that, I get this little win, I get this little burst of energy. Then I'm thinking on perhaps more strategic levels, perhaps more important things that I want to be thinking about in a more positive way.
So keep it simple, go find something simple to finish, or fix, or do in a few minutes. Give yourself a win, pat yourself on the back.

Finally someone understands why I do these ‘little things’ instead of telling me that’s not what I should do. It makes my brain feel and function better. I’ve not been doing this as much because I hear peoples’ voices in my head saying I’m wasting time or procrastinating on bigger things. I’m having a hard time getting back to ‘myself’ because of these voices and don’t know who I am anymore. I know that sounds more convoluted than I should be but it has changed me so I don’t totally recognize myself anymore. This concept extends to other areas . . .
Dear David, thank you for your tips. I am enjoying them a lot and it's a privilege to get them directly from you! Take good care!
This is an awesome message. You're right...little wins can give a huge sense of accomplishment and motivation.
I'm a psychiatrist, and you're talking about dopamine. This is great!
Thanks for the reminder
I have implemented complete GTD, and it's transforming. Keep improving every day. Thanks David Allen 🙏
I believe there's true wisdom in this. I find that when I am overthinking or frustrated or restless that exactly that is the best possible solution, to jump up and complete something. And often I find that a momentum propels me to do some more things. And later when I relax, I've truly earned that relaxation and it's a fabulous feeling.
Love this! David's work has been life changing.
Interesting!
Thanks David, once again a great message!

😂 That pile of books is a hilariously-distracting inefficient beast. Just saying...
We
David needs to organize those books. He’s trying to give tips for turbulent times, for helping us to be organized and focused, but the pile of books suggests the opposite: lack of organization, lack of control, someone overwhelmed by tasks and things to do. Nice tip, terrible decoration.
He's an author...its his business. It would be like going to the kitchen of a chef and not seeing any food. Really?
I think it's part of his production.
These vertical book racks David has are not on his Read/Review list, so don't need any form of order. I've always seen them more as colorful decoration. He typically has duplicates on the rack as well - I know because I've lifted a couple myself in the past!
I think those are vertical book cases/racks. Some people don't like them and think they're unsightly, other people love them. They're kind of cool because it looks like you just have a stack of books, but you can actually grab a book out of the middle read it but it back in, without anything falling.
