You missed the main reason why this song is "always" suggested. Tim - the first singer - is a super bass singer. He hit F1 in some songs. And his change of vocal range in this song is always shock.

In addition to the bass singer starting the song out in falsetto head voice, he also wraps the song while singing the "tenor duet" with Rob at the end as they fade out. I'm always in awe of vocal range like this. Plus I echo other comments regarding Adam's beatboxing, truly some of the best talent out there and this song showcases a lot of it, especially in the bridge.

Another interesting fact... the original artist Cam is female and Home Free performed this in the same key that she did. Most of the time the guys stick to 4 part harmony plus Adam Rupp the beatboxer. Adam actually has a very nice tenor voice but usually sticks to banging out the percussion. They don't call him The Freak of Nature for no reason. They recently did a Sea Shanty Medley that is astounding! Deep rumbling bass, awesome harmonies and Adam adds castanets to his repertoire of inhuman noises that he can imitate. Thanks for the reaction!

They also recently released a Sea Chantey medley where Adam actually manages to "play" castanets at one point.

  • @WolfsbaneHollow

One of the reasons that Home Free fans suggest this song (after a reactor is familiar with the group) is the shock of hearing their "super bass" Tim Foust start this out in a tenor range. (displaying the high end of his 5+octave range) And the fact that Chance then takes the bass part and drops it right in the basement.

    • @sjenny5891
      @sjenny5891 3 года назад +2

A lot of reactors are more of a shock and awe though.
I like the way he's more focused on style and precision. More like a teacher picking out the dynamics of the song rather than the people singing it.

Aside from the many fantastic points you made, what I love about Mayday is that Tim moves to the high register while Chance moves down from baritone into the bass part. I believe for the song to work as it did, they needed three in the high register and Tim was better suited to do so. For me, it showed Home Free's versatility. Of course, Adam the beatboxer is solid. Between Pentatonix, Home Free, and Voiceplay, these groups prove you can have a very full sound without instruments. Rob Lindquist is a tenor, but I believe Austin Brown who is a classically trained tenor with a background in musical theater is the LEAD Tenor, the whole group is just mind blowingly awesome ❣️

You viewed this song a little early in your Home Free journey. The shock factor is there because Tim ( their super bass) is using the top of his his 5 octave range and singing along with Austin and Rob. Love Home Free and please react to more.

Knowing Tim Faust normally sings down in d#1 range and can go as low as G0 it make what he is singing inthis song even more incredible. It seems that there is no note he can't sing

Easily one of my favorites from Home Free ... Trust me, it's only ONE of my favorites. If you've never listened to any of their other videos, this is not the best one to start with, simply because of the jaw dropping surprise of Adam Chance (Chance) and Tim Foust switching places. Chance can get really low in his bass, but Foust can (and has) blow sub-woofers in concert. He's tall, and I swear he pulls the depth from the ends of his toes at times ....
Adam Rupp (who started the group with his brother years ago, and is the only remaining person left from the starting group) does drum solos during the middle of the concerts -- while everyone else is resting their vocal chords -- that last from 8 - 10 minutes .... and then he goes right back in to finish the concert. Without taking a meaningful break. Awesome doesn't BEGIN to describe what that man can do!!
If you haven't yet, check out their 'Man of Constant Sorrows'. Would LOVE to see your reaction to it!!

Love the color of your new digs. I hope you weren't so overwhelmed with the rest of the piece that you failed to notice Tim Foust, basso profundo extraordinaire, sang a nicely smooth tenor here. Of course he doesn't have the punch that Austin has at that level, but for someone who regularly blows out speakers with the bass It was very nice.
I really like your reviews because you point out a lot of little things that my untrained ear just doesn't catch. There's more in this bowl of soup than I knew.

What are those echo like "ohs" called? That was neat...I can listen to their version over and over again. Tim Foust, their bass has phenomenal range. I'm a sucker for the low voices but man! His voice, along with Avi Kaplan and Geoff Castellucci, their ranges just are jaw dropping! Need more stuff in your background....Love the reaction as always Sue

Ah...more Home Free. Thank you! I love these guys and Chance doing the base here is just beautiful. This is one of my top favorites of theirs.
Is there an echo with the new set up? My audio is picking up static and a sort of echo...not something that happens when I listen to Tim, Geoff, or Avi so maybe in the recording? It only happens when you are speaking, not on the music.
I also prefer the opposite screen within a screen. Watching your reactions is more fun than the video. You are too tiny to see! We definitely need to see you better! I like the new look though. Super cool and sleek. Keep up the awesome reactions!

Tim Foust (the bass) is also a songwriter. To hear his range, watch the Home Free video "Snow Globe". Austin Brown (high tenor) is also a songwriter and there is a video of one of his original songs "Love Me Like That". Rob Lundquist has such a sweet, soulful tenor and it's best displayed in a collaboration between Home Free & Texas Hill "Dreamer". Fall down the Home Free rabbit hole - it's a fun fall!

They have an absolutely amazing producer, Darren Rust, who also arranges a lot of their music. Darren is the 6th Home Free member as we Fries call him. Tim Foust arranges some, too.

Thanks for your reaction! I enjoyed your commentary. I do wish you hadn't been advised to react to this one QUITE so soon in your Home Free reaction journey. I see that most of the other comments have mentioned the same, and that you have acknowledged. ;-) Still...I found your comments knowledgeable and true to what I like about their work, as well. I'm 71, and have been singing since I was tiny, except for a space of about 20 years, where I couldn't, due to rheumatoid arthritis bending me over forward to the point that singing anything except as a deep bass was impossible (I used to have a 5-octave range, myself, and though typically singing 1st Soprano, I'd often fill in for either the Baritone or Bass parts if we had choir members missing). I had both hips replaced in 2017, and have slowly been retraining my voice. Listening to Home Free since I discovered them in 2015 has been one of the best things that ever happened in my life. They also got me through both of those hip surgeries, therapy sessions, and recovery time, bringing great joy to me as I listened to the harmonies you have touted so well. :-D

If you're interested in learning about how the group began, and the men who have participated since then, I (Linda Wingfield all over the rest of the internet, by the way...this is just my gaming channel) did a bunch of research back in 2019, that I wrote into an article filled with internet links and examples of the work of Home Free as a group, as well as some of their individual input. You can find it on my website, at: lindawing.net/arts/music/home-free-a-brief-history/
After I finished that, in 2019, I also put together a range comparison for the guys, which includes Chris Rupp (the originator of the group in the first place, whom you'll read about in that brief history), but also includes Adam Chance (who took over as the baritone you heard get down into Tim's usual range in this song). You can find that chart at: lindawing.net/arts/music/home-free-vocal-ranges-chart/

Yes the "percussions" are actually made by one person. His name is Adam Rupp. Check out his "drum solo" on youtube!! The singer starting this song is Tim Foust, who is a very very low bass! He has a 5 octave range! The guy(Adam Chance) singing bass in this song is not normally doing that.

1 All of Home Free's music is a capella so yes, all of that was mouth and voice (and claps and stomps).
2 People are told specifically NOT to watch Home Free's Mayday until they know Home Free fairly well because that first tenor is their Basso Profundo, Tim Foust.

If you really want to be amazed by Tim Foust, listen to Misty Mountains by Peter Hollens featuring Tim. He goes super low. Definitely shocking how low that man can go, considering he is hitting some pretty high notes here.

You can see Home Free in youtube videos from when they competed on the Sing Off a couple of years back. And Chance, (the Baritone) who took over the bass this time for Tim (so Tim could sing at a higher register), was originally with Street Corner Symphony as their bass in the season before Home Free competed. Awesome reaction! Keep them coming. :O)

The amazing thing about this song is that the first singer -- Tim Faust -- has a voice that goes deep enough that he has literally blown sub-woofers in live concerts. He has switched places with Adam Chance, who also has a deep voice, but can't go as low as Tim. This is really a song that needs to be heard after you're well acquainted with their normal voices. Tim has, if I remember right, a 5 octave singing range.
