- In this week's RC plane and drone news:
- AI creates stunning and impossible drone footage
- An airliner keeps flying with massive damage to wing/tail
- A 2.3 tonne European satellite falling to earth but you're safe (apparently)
- only one month until RID enforcement begins in the USA.

All birds, satellites, and meteors also need RID modules to be safe.
All footballs and soccer balls too. They are not sub-250g! And they have been known to cause fatalities after people were struck by them.
@@hockeyguy820 Cricket balls and golf balls are definitely lethal too!
Yup, imagine being hit by a flying ostrich without RID, it could be catastrophic! We should warn everybody about the possibility of this happening so that we can push through laws!
I've installed RID on all of my meteors, because I care about safe tea
Don't forget about the aliens. I mean... UFOs. Or UAPs... Drones!
Oh, you know what I mean.
Drone pilots in the 1800's were real cowboys.
Real Pioneers!
😆
Thanks again Bruce, really appreciate your work.
I always remember a quote by the person who taught safety for the old construction card here across the ditch in Victoria.
"There's no such thing as common sense. If there was, we wouldn't be having this conversation". Now I mean this towards the policy makers as they seem to be the ones lacking properly working neurons, making us model hobbyists have these unnecessary conversations.
Another one I like to mention is when I had a conversation with a general aviation mechanic who said there would be some serious design flaws in the aircraft if a 350gm multi rotor could bring it down and talking about 2kg birds and other hazards to GA. My old multi rotor weighed 350gm if you're wondering.
I'm not interested in the back pack, but going over to watch it now.
Cheers.
The big difference between a 250g drone and a commercial plane / satellite etc is that one has the backing of authority, governments etc, and the other doesn't. Might is right.
Flying doors too? Have considered a flying door as my next fixed wing model.
Hi Bruce, lookin and sounding great, nice to see. Enjoy the rants
love the 2 legged horses in the Ai old west clip 🐴🤣
I noticed that. Looked like only the front half of a horse 😂😂
This guy is super smart to make a video like this with no editing breaks.
RC News is great.
"Eventually, common sense will prevail."
🤣👍 Good one, Bruce!
I wouldn't bank on it🤔
Keep up the news 🤓👍
I have been watching you for a while now and I would like to watch you do a more frequent drone news, kepp doing what you are doing and thank🙏 you for it 🙏
That is partly what that Hollywood strike last year was about, job replacement. On the other hand, one assumes drone footage has already put a lot of helicopter footage creators out of a job.
50kg pieces, travelling at 4000 kmph, semi-molten 1000°C hot too I guess. Bureaucrats: Sounds safe, carry on.
That comment makes no sense. How do you propose burning space junk get contained? A giant net?
@@Snipely Not my area of expertise, I don't think I can add anything about it, only learn. At the moment for me it doesn't make sense! Since it's matter of chance I'd wish they had a contingency plan to present to the people. What will you do/what happens when on-purpose de-orbited space debris actually hits/ruins someones car? ...or ends someones life? Does the effected individuals/family need to take the space agencies to court to get it addressed? If so, why do we need special drone laws? If "on purpose" crashing 2 tons of space junk into possibly populated area is A-OK! "Just take it to court buddy" ...WHY do we need all the bells n whistles on a drone in case of ACCIDENTAL crash? If there is a problem, take it to court.
(The drone sh!t show of laws can ONLY impact accidental crashes, if yer operating a drone for nefarious reasons yer not fitting any "excess devices", remember? It's like the constant attacks on legal gun ownership thinking it'll move the needle on deadly gun violence by illegal guns used by criminals/gangs)
According to the FAA, any unmanned aircraft that are not physically tethered, are subject to the “Drone Regulations”. The FAA have jurisdiction on all airspace above American soil from the first centimetre to infinity.
🤔 How many satellites travelling over USA territory have been fitted with RID?
Don't forget the Chinese 'drone' with no RID. They got rid of that with an Air Force launched missile. That taught all non RID compliant owners, that the FAA will use all resources available, to take out your RC model. Watch out! 😉
The risk of drones to commercial aircraft is mostly financial. If a drone strikes an aircraft on take-off, even if no damage occurred, the pilot will most likely have to turn around and land to at least have the plane inspected and cleared for take-off again. I doubt any commercial pilot would ignore a strike and personally take on the risk of being wrong. So even if no damage occurred, the cost to the airline would be non-negligible.
That's what insurance is for. If they worked out the 'risk', the premiums would probably go up 10c per policy worldwide. It's so low.
But I think the Police Helicopter policies would go up by $500.00 per policy though! lol.
@@David-yo5ws no, that's what prevention is for. Insurance only throws money at a problem after the fact. Risk mitigation is the first barrier to potential damage.
@@David-yo5ws They will already be insured against it, but like all insurances there are situations that aren't covered. The pilot ignoring a drone strike and assuming there's no damage wouldn't be covered. Hence the need to turn around and land.
@@Snipely The airline is powerless to prevent a drone strike. There is no prevention they can do to stop it happening. Although it is an extremely low risk, the 'human factor' means that at some time in the future, it will happen.
@@David-yo5ws risk mitigation is a degree of prevention, and while not perfect, it's better than throwing your hands up.
Can't beat a good snafu! - - I had to chuckle at your comparison of the 250gm drone and the 2.5 tonne lump of scrap metal - on the back of the head. I don't fancy being hit by either, but the rapidly descending truck would certainly hurt - but not for long!
LOL, I just had a 'flashback' to the Canadian TV series "Southern Exposure" where Rick was hit by a satellite and it sort of merged with his body. The funeral service was priceless. You just saw a coffin with antenna sticking out of it.
I work in video, animation, pilot drones and use AI in my work. We are quite far from AI replacing creatives. When you actually have to use this stuff you see how limited it currently is.
AI tools are slowly being implemented in our creative software, which is great!
WOW..a RC drone did that!
Sound like we need some AI footage of the Tokoroa airfield?? Just think if you added rc enthusiasts at the field.?
My thought precisely! 🤣👍
I LOVE this idea!
Then send the city council the vid to “enjoy”!!!
Add the AI Bruce at the end, mowing the grass and saying "I'll be back!"
Such a great video, please keep em news up, loving them! Happy flyin🤙
Hey Bruce, have you seen the new U.K. CAA proposals to allow BVLOS flights ? There’s also a consultation about this on their website, 😉😉
jesus.. think the pilots and passengers of that airplane should be goddamned happy that that wing didnt get torn off.. or structurally dammaged to such a degree that it collapsed in the air..
Bruce, once more, your message is sooooo spot on. Keep up the good work, the world needs to hear this!
"Common sense will prevail". Ever the optimist there Bruce 😏👍👍
Thanks Bruce keep us informed when you can bestest from Scotland
I think the "Safety" card is, and always has been a rouse to hide the real reason for clearing recreational Drones from the sky. The real reason, is Drone delivery highways, and later on people carrying Drones.
In the UK, The first of a whole web of these virtual highways are due to start later this year. This means that you will only be able to fly a model plane or drone in designated areas.
Great content, thanks mate. The airfield documentary is fantastic project, look forward to learning some of it's history.
Another great video.
Thanks Bruce. Another nice video.
3:46 the damage from the approach lights hit in a most advantageous spot if it had hit the engine this would have turned out much worse. A 250gram drone going down the intake of engine I would think it could handle. I would be worried about battery causing issues.
I still remember that Cessna 172 that plowed into a big police drone sitting in approach pattern for the runway. The plane got a big dent but was able to land safely.
Also, where one person is flying a drone there’s dozens more.
Great update Bruce , I wonder where I can attach the RID to my child's kite so it doesn't interfere with Amazon deliveries. Australia is still heading down this ridiculous path while the road toll is climbing and GA planes keep crashing. We need to keep promoting the good uses of drones and model aircraft any way we can. Have you noticed the electric scooters are the latest target of media as well. It used to be "dangerous" skateboards when I was young. Strangely they didn't get eradicated.
Thanks for the drone news Bruce I love your perspective on things keep up the good work
0:22 Horse gets sucked into the mud! "Atrax,You got to move! Please!"- Atreyu
The bipedal horses are a blast too!
Thank you 👍
Happy birthday Bruce.👍
Keep up the news Bruce.
Read recently in Drone DJ that the FAA is of the opinion that if you attach the extended battery to you DJI Mini Pro 4 (or Mini 3?) That it needs to be registered as it's suddenly over 250g - fair enough. However, if you go and fly it on the stock batteries, you will then need to attach a RID module to it and register that configuration as well, even if you're flying recreationally, as it had been registered in the other configuration and DJI's firmware won't RID as it doesn't have the extended battery in it. #ThanksFAA #ThanksDJI
4:10 a little over stated is itself huge over statement 😮
Based on my experience AI will just lead to the directors of the commercials all stuck in an endless feedback loop until the diet coke runs out and they die of starvation.
Like the well known bizarre death spiral of ants.
That meteor better have a RID Module on it
100%, completely and totally accurate. When will these fools wake up. My Mini 4 ran straight into the back of my father's head at full speed and he literally acted like a fly hit him. He said he barely felt it. The fact that it hit him and shouldn't have is another question but if he could barely feel it, I have feeling an aircraft would be able to handle it.
Bruce, so true this all boils down to common sense….. thanks keep them coming.
hope my 250g drone doesn't damage that falling satellite
I suppose that if a drone is swallowed by your jet engine you can sue the owner, but not if a wild goose is ingested!
Gobsmacked! (At the AI footage) And the plane ripping out antennas was an incredible story. The Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) catching the fuel was a bit of practical common sense.
So, 52 kg of molten aluminium could reach the ground before breaking up. Makes me think the 400 tonnes of asteroids, meteorites and space dust that falls to Earth every day, pales by comparison. I did read that 1 person was killed by a meteorite in their house in the South Island, like 60 years ago. How unlucky was that! (Came through the roof too).
Bruce, I thought you would have said something about the drone event X 2, that stopped the firefighting helo's in the Port Hills of Christchurch. Talk about an over-reaction. A bit like a child too scared to go into a garden shed, because there is a spider in there. The fear in the mind, over-rides the reality. Arachnophobia is real though (I saw a mate of mine in absolute terror once) and does need to be respected. But maybe there needs to be a term applied to a fear of drones hitting helo's or planes? Then there could be a whole new health industry created, to help spend out tax money, oh, I mean, to give people jobs. Sorry, what was I thinking! Great channel Bruce. look forward to the back pack reviews soon.
Thanks for the news, Bruce! 😊
But yeah, I wonder if those things flying around nuclear facilities are going to use Remote ID... 🤔
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
It is not the drone Bruce, it is the free view cameras : )
Thanks so much for all you do ! seems like all dji recreational drones are in jeopardy of being grounded here in the usa .
Back to Autel i think for me.
We've had computer generated music for a long time now. It hasn't put musicians out of business. The human creativity hasn't been replaced yet. And as far as copyrighting AI produced media, hell no it shouldn't be allowed. And what would be the point? You'd just have an AI do it again, if it's that easy.
I never realized that an episode that "nobody died" from is all we need to decide there's nothing to worry about. That plane and it's passengers were VERY LUCKY to make it around and back on the ground safely. A lot of people quite easily could have died.
A metric ton, aka long ton, is 1000 kg which is 2200 lbs. You can see the similarity.
Your backpack review link is broken on the site.
If it was a Russian satelite they would making a big drama about it, like they did with MIR.
That's the one that landed in the Australian outback if I recall correctly. I think the biggest worry was the nuclear battery, which had heavy shielding. Not 1 Kangaroo or Camel was struck.
Don't forget Hail , Kites , Party balloons 😁
5:24, you guys used to say aluminum the same way we do. You called football soccer, too, lol.
Still do. Bruce is a bit different! 😁
I'm glad to hear the real news. Keep it up, and I agree. I wish common sense would make a reappearance. Love the videos.
Well I suppose you don't exactly have very granular control over the output ... yet. Until you can direct the production to a similar level as the manual production and editing it's only really good for stock or placeholder footage.
There were no flat, nicely graded roads in the 1800s
Actually I don't think the damage done following a 250 g drone smacking into an airliner is overstated, in fact I'm pretty sure it'd be the end of the drone, and if it ever happens I'll be sad to be proven right.
The really stupid thing regarding the drones and planes issue is that planes are already rated for bird strikes. A Canada Goose averages 14 pounds and I would think would be a lot more dangerous than even a 5 pound drone. Also I would think that geese and ducks outnumber drones in the air by a factor of 100 or more. If even a small plane is tested to survive a bird strike where is the danger from a drone. Stupid regulators selling out our airspace.
I think they should ban the generative ai from the public.
I thought planes carried fuel in their wings. These structures are made so lightweight, yet people think they are built to carry thousands of gallons of fuel. Look at how thin the aluminum used for the outer shell is, designed to keep it light.
Problem is when drones first became popular, a lot of people went "Full Retard" and flew into the path of aircraft, Deadly or not, no one wants the risk or the repair costs. Hence the laws, not entirely unreasonable IMO. Unfortunately in Canada the laws have really ramped up, even for the folks like me who have been flying planes and heli's for 20+ years...they want us to record maintenance and when we charge batteries....on a plastic toy? that's fecked up!
Regarding Satellites, you missed out the part where they re-enter over the pacific ocean over a designated area, basically a grave yard for space junk that does make it down. Of course assuming controlled re-entry.
RID is just a license plate for your drone. How are authorities supposed to fine you if they don't know who you are?
that AI are not released to the public yet and wont be for years
AI scrubs the net to get it's data, and in this case that would be footage to use I suspect. Though it may tweak it in some way, I also suspect that the footage will still be under someone's copyright. Be careful when asking any AI for anything. I guarantee no one is going to sue the AI...
There have been known cases where lawyers have asked AI to write briefs for cases they are working on. They didn't double check what the AI supplied to them and it turns out the AI MADE CRAP UP when it was citing "case law" in the brief. Those lawyers are in deep crap now. Pretty sure they won't be lawyers any longer once everything shakes out. Judges and bar associations don't like it when lawyers sign their names to false information. Go figure...
Not me half listening and thinking that was a drone impact
You are not seriously downplaying the experience of the pilot and the pure luck involved in the Hudson River Landing.
I think you are going off the deep end. A small 250g can cause a lot of damage to a plane. I agree, drones should not be flown near airports. As usual some idiot will fly near or over an airport. It isn't just the cosmetic side of the plane that is damaged, it's the structures inside the area that will be damaged. If a larger drone was struck by a plane and it only showed some cosmetic damage, those will more than likely have damaged important substructures that cost a lot of money to fix or cause a catastrophic failure. So, don't get to far ahead of yourself.
Weekly news would be great as we don't see so much of you nowadays.
Where is my hard hat?
if all people were equally reasonable, the earth could be a paradise
respekt
Hey Bruce, what is that white hat in the background?
great video, i shall use an umbrella while the space junk hits earth, that will do it, quick question if a drone say around 500g hit the turbine of a jetliner would this cause any noticeable damage to the engine
The left side of A.I. video. Two Legged horse at 0:26
I think the more and more the CAA and FAA regulate the recreational model flying hobby, the less and less hobbyist pilots will comply!
The effect is inversely proportional to compliance, much like the effect of increasing the regulation has less and less effect on safety!
Keep it fair and proportional and pilots will comply, simple.
If i'm not mistaken those satelites are nuclear powered. So they're probably also a bit worried about creating a dirty bomb in the sky :)
The people need to demand risk assessments and the rules/regs based from their outcomes instead of rules/regs being made on assumptions and on how many commercial dollars they get to say how dangerous RC aircraft can potentially be if so and so should happen.
yes make more vids
From this point forward, all of my drone footage will be created by AI! Wink, wink!!
Look, these companies that make this space junk have enough money to destroy anyone who wants to dispute with them while hobbyists can be threatened with " million dollar fines " without any problem coming back to those making those threats.
Bruce, this is sooo funny. Its ok to get hit on the head with a 115lbs of aluminum but it's not ok to get hit on the head with a small 250gram plastic drone.
I can see people getting "busted" for videos that depict unsafe flying, and just say its fake. Lmao
Bruce there are to many pen pushers that don’t know what they are saying, and they fire massive frozen birds into the engines for testing, I can’t see a small drone doing much damage to a massive jet engine, and here’s a question have any engine manufacturers actually flown a drone into and engine to see what happens!? or are they just jumping on the band wagon.
AI FPV drone racing ? Don’t know if they have real time AI.
AI Rights will become a HUGE legal issue when the Machines become sentient,
Contact attempt
Why don’t TOGA equiped aircraft have STOP button to reject a take off?
Geoff
They haven't been shooting videos ads much on remote locations for decades. It's too damn expensive. If I can do most of the advertisement with green screen no location shooting. Work the rest of it out inside of a computer. I save a fortune and I don't have to send cruise out to remote locations. When they get there the weather goes to hell. Plus I was stuff you have to take like the car would have to be pristine and clean.
Sadly, the root of government power lies in the ability to make the mundane alarming and the alarming mundane. When I get on a plane, I’m not worried about a model plane or DJI drone. I’m worried about the doors flying off or having a near miss with another full scale plane.
It is very plain that governments wish to regulate radio controlled aircraft more than motor vehicles on the roads, even though they aren't as expensive, most don't purchase insurance ( comprehensive, or liability ) for a radio controlled aircraft, and the government doesn't need to maintain the sky.
Why are toys tracked?
Sully, not Scully 😀
Sorry to be a pedantic idiot 😅
Also, do you have a Patreon account?
I left the hobby a few years ago I come back to a mess. Mynplanes and "Quad copter" not a drone are unflyable so im just done with trying to get back into flying.
I am trying out RC cars
Very interesting the video of an old western town. Where are all those people going and what are they doing.
No old town even in the 1950s had people milling around like that.
Most were out working in fields, or in factories etc.
The sun would be too hot or cold to be out.
Hollywood will be Hollywood and so goes AI.
Make believe is make believe will be make believe.
Thanks for the videos. Thanks for the information and so on.
Exactly what fuel was emptied?????? Nuclear waste? What else could it be?
Why do the big companies not get hit with large fines--fines that would be like 4x years income. I say we start with the board members of the FAA. Aren't they in charge of safety? Where were they? Why aren't they being fined for their reckless regulation and lack of oversight?
The risk factor is always proportional to the amount of profit that the government agencies and corporate entities have made and are likely to still make from the activity. Hobby drone is zero profit therefore dangerous and should be banned, and a satelite has made millions and we want to keep putting them up there, so of course, the risk if/when they fall down is negligile. Simple maths really!
Said it before they are afraid of what you might see, and load to the internet .
Birdstrike is far more of a danger.
AI is going to be a copy right nightmare how authentic is this probably based off some other images that could be copyrighted?
lets see how many are fined, jailed, cited whatever when RID becomes "enforced" . I assume that number will be ZERO to perhaps a few warned Maybe.
So if they build a car using computer Generated modeling They can't patent it ?
