  • A look at some precision cut steel tanto kata based on historical japanese swords from 1200s-1500s...order a set of kata here: soulsmithing.co...
    A kata is a pattern or form used for appreciation, study, or for reference when creating an utsushi blade. The exercise of accurately making kata based on the work of historical smiths is an excellent way to train the eyes, mind, and body to create proper tanto forms. The most important aspect of making kata is to work carefully to be as true to the original lines as possible.
    Apprentices were asked to make as many kata as they could: these are eventually used for sword making, can be kept for a lifetime for reference and study, and their very making is a good opportunity for practice.

    Thanks Bro! I really appreciate the visibility! Technically, it's not unboxing because I send them in tubes, but I don't think untubing would have made a nice title on RUclips ;-) That was a really nice opening shot from inside the smithy with a blade in the vise by the way!

      that's why i used quotes, but i think unboxing is a genre unto itself on here ^____^ ..i like it too but when i saw that shot in full screen i thought i should have finished filing the tang first, ha...

    Interesting. I knew about katas from my days in Shotokan karate, but didn't know that the concept generalized to other forms of activity. I generally don't make either Western or Japanese blades (which still leaves open a *lot* of blade forms...), but I think I'm going to order some of these blade katas. Because they're beautiful. yes, they are lovely old ones, kunimitsu (shintogo) and yukimitsu are some of the best of the best and smiths have been studying them for hundreds of years! (kata just literally means "form" or "pattern" so it gets used in a lot of places in japanese)

    why is osoraku zukuri so rare? I've only seen a few antique ones

    • @islandblacksmith
      @islandblacksmith  5 лет назад

      both of those last 2 are very rare, the vast majority of tanto follow the classical form because it is such a proven and useful shape...i think osoraku was an interesting variation that gets attention because it is so different (which has even become a value unto itself in modern "art", but not in traditional craft) and there were not many (perhaps only the original) until it was revived in shinshinto period...

    The unfortunate issue is that we don't know what some of them were like with full Niku, and Sugata. Many if not all of the profiles there are after the Originals have gone to Togishi a few times.

    • @islandblacksmith
      @islandblacksmith  5 лет назад +1

      yes, many times over the centuries! it is interesting to extrapolate backwards and ponder what they may have started out like, though tanto are much less susceptible than tachi to the kind of damage that would require major reshaping (edge chip or broken tip)...occasionally one might even find an oshigata from a century or two ago and comparing to those unused ones dedicated at temples is a help too...at any rate most folks who make tanto out of their head will be greatly improved by even a tsukare classical kata...

      @choji8725 5 лет назад

      @@islandblacksmith Of course Tanto profiles vary also even by the same Kaji. One day Hocho was forged. Around the bend, the same day, a Yaroi Toshi from another forge. So much history, so little time.
