    I'm building A shower now and when I watched the schluter install video I thought well this is dumb. Why wouldn't they overlap everything like roof wrap. Glad I'm not the only one to think there way of installing was dumb. Thanks for the video

    You read my mind about the whole overlapping of this Schluter system. I’m right in the middle of this install myself and it occurred to me that Schluter’s instructions seems a little strange to me, so I thought I would jump on here and look around and I found you. I think you’re the only one that has done it this way, exactly what I was thinking. Great job.

    I’m a pro for 28 years now and if I or my clients could afford to go basically triple protection then I WOULD. We all love the lightweight materials offered these days. However, just because it’s new doesn’t make it better or any good for that matter. (if that makes sense) water proofing with thin-set is a joke. I don’t care if you Mr. Schluter himself. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🍻🍻🍻

      Totally agree. For the past six years I've been building showers with Shluter products and in the past year I've taken this "belt and suspenders approach of adding the Hydro ban to the pan and up the walls for eight to ten inches.

      As a non-tile guy, why not just use Hydroban and skip the Kerdi step all together? Am I missing something? The Kerdi is a complete system, and the hydroban is a complete system. Did he basically double-up on his waterproofing?

      @@MrSiestaFiesta He did double waterproofing for safety.. which I did on my both baths too

      @@MrSiestaFiesta from the hours of research I have done, a lot of roll-on waterproofing systems are only good for normal showers and do not work with steam style showers. A lot of people have been doing what Jon have been doing and doing a waterproof membrane for the steam shower and adding a layer of roll on waterproofing to double up. I'm definitely not a shower guy, but I have done at least 30 hours of research and courses prepping myself for my shower remodel lol

    Thanks for the reference to Isaac. His test installation(s) leaked as a result of not reading and following the manufacturers installation instructions. Every system will fail you don't take the time to properly follow the correct prep and install instructions. Just sayin'. I agree with you big time on hydro ban - yes its more expensive than most other products, but it is by far the best product on the market. If they use it on Olympic sized swimming pools, it should hold up in my shower.

  • @relativenormality

    I actually bring the kerdi down 2 inch passed my corner. So there is no joint. Install corners first than glue 2 inch on floor and unroll it straight up the wall and install another corner afterwards. It does require me to relevel the shower pan with a skim coat due to the excess thickness of membrane in the corners.same thing for corner walls. I dont use kerdi band. I over lap the actual kerdi membrane. And as far as benches. One solid piece 2 in on floor straight up to the ceiling. No seams whats so ever

      It’s better to do it than to rip out the tile later and do it because the Kerdi leaked.

      Right On Gary! I have not done a fiberglass pan but that sounds like a good plan. I know there are some cool premade shower pan liners available. That really makes good sense to do that. I have only used silicone caulk on all the corner joints. I’ve been using spectralock 1 grout with great results.

    I saw Isaac saying he was abandoning Ardex 8 + 9 but then more recently used it (specifically mentioned instead of Hydroban) in a RSS Pro system because he said would cure without air. Maybe at times preferred? A little confused. ButI didn’t like the idea of that system since it didn’t use membrane sealing at corners (apparently similar to a Wedi system). I had decided was going to use Laticrete modified thinset to secure membrane but put Hydroban over seams. I like your “flashing” method but I’m hiring tile setter so doubt I can talk them into it. I’m sure they will already be eye-rolling at my special requests.

      @RightOnJonCrane  Год назад +2

      Sounds like it’s leaking to me! For the amount of money these systems cost I would think they would be water proof without a doubt. For the cost this better be the water proof watch that can go down to 50ft not the water resistant watch that can only take light rain 🌧️ From what I’ve seen in his videos the Kerdi is leaking. In one video he showed the Kerdi flaking apart like old cardboard. Something is not right.

      @@RightOnJonCrane Seems like everything leaks if you believe all the videos you see on youtube. I've seen dozens of roll on membrane videos failure videos as well. Seems like it's primarily people who can't be bothered to read the instructions and follow them. I had the same idea you had in doing Schulter waterproofing with a rollon like redguard or hydroban on top but then I read other blogs that said it's not recommended. Who knows.
