This is a whisky I stumbled upon when I did my last review on the "Talisker 18 Duel - the OLD versus the NEW". I had brought back a bunch of sample bottles from the Talisker distillery (thanks to the good people at Talisker) but didn't really check them out until I was back in Canada doing that review.
I was pulling out the new 18 year old sample bottle for the review and noticed a couple other bottlings. One was the "Distillery Exclusive" and the other was the "Wilder Seas". I had looked in the distillery at a dozen Taliskers but the "Wilder Seas" didn't ring a bell. So "Surprise"! I started to do research on that whisky.
Wilder Seas is a collaboration between Talisker and the environmental Parley people. Parley is an organization dedicated to preserving our oceans. Their focus is to create more awareness through numerous partnerships with governments, environmental groups, and brands, such as Adidas, Dior, and now we have Talisker involved.
I had been a commercial fisherman and raised my family off of that income that came from our oceans. This was something that I had good reason to be interested in and follow up on.
Parley has teamed up with Talisker to raise money to save and preserve the sea forests off the coast of Scotland, Chile, and South Africa. These sea forests, which also occur off the coast of the Isle of Skye, (the home of Talisker); cover 25% of our coastlines on Earth. These "Forests of the Sea" play a critical role in the health of our planet. Unfortunately, these ocean forests are disappearing four times faster than the rain forest. Parley is sending out the message that "we need immediate action to reverse this deterioration of our coastline and the Forests of the Sea"
This is a limited edition bottle made out of 100% recycled glass and is different than any of their previous bottlings by having a ceramic design, which looks strikingly beautiful compared to other Talisker bottles. For every bottle sold, Talisker donates £3 to Parley. So this is definitely a good thing but what about the whisky?
Talisker and Parley have decided to present the "Wilder Seas" at an unusual higher 48.6% ABV, aged in Bourbon barrels and for the first time, Talisker has finished it in Cognac Casks. Cognac can have the "Wow" factor or ??? - but it will be different. Let's get into it. Enjoy the video. Slàinte Mhath😉
