In today's video, we're stepping out of our comfort zone and diving into the Elijah Craig B522. This episode takes on a heavier topic as we discuss the social responsibility of brands. We chose Elijah Craig because of the way their brand has confronted their history; Elijah Craig was an enslaver.
Reverend Elijah Craig was a multifaceted individual-a Baptist preacher, educator, and entrepreneur who established the first paper and wool mills in Georgetown, Kentucky. Despite his various ventures, it was his skill as a distiller and innovator that brought him the most recognition. However, an often-overlooked aspect of his legacy involves the enslaved individuals who played a crucial role in the Bourbon industry. Craig depended on enslaved labor for his distilling and business operations. Today, the brand is dedicated to uncovering and honoring the identities and contributions of these laborers. Elijah Craig collaborates with the University of Kentucky's Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies and Central Kentucky Slavery Initiative to ensure a more accurate and inclusive retelling of their history and to support efforts towards a more equitable society.
