  • In this tut episode we create a vocal effect chain that we can save and reuse for all our Bitwig projects. We look at some basic shaping the tone with de-ess / EQ, Compressor, Blur, Rev & Delay. Using only stock plugins from Bitwig Studio and a Shure SM58 mic, no fuzz.
Hope you find this useful for your own production techniques.
I set the volume a little too high so my monitor is going in to the narration mic which gives a subtle delay effect to the audio from Bitwig, sorry about that. Rewind and replay...I mean fix... for the next tutorial. =)
Didn't get any video out last week with easter and all. =)
    Cheers,

Mattias, what I enjoy about your tutorials: while there is a specific approach/method that can be followed to the letter as a sort of template, you demonstrate as well a broader concept/big picture way of thinking to suggest how to approach working in Bitwig. Bravo.

Thank Marz, yeah I really think Bitwig is great for setting up small templates (chains) which you can easily reuse. I'm a big fan of getting a smooth workflow which will not slow down your creative process. Thus I try to find ways just to dig in and come up with fast results without overcomplicating things on the way. I guess it comes from my background in creating game audio content where I first create templates (a workflow) and then work from that starting point. Bitwig is a very good playground but it's easy to get lost sometimes with so many possibilities. I would love if they gave the possibility to color every device (say I want my reverbs to be RED and delays to be Orange so it's easier and faster to distinguish them when you are working). Gonna make it a feature wish! =)

    • @MattiasHolmgren

Cris Rockwell cool, to save the preset just drag the whole chain with left click to the rightside browser bar and a save popup will appear. Ill make sure to include it in my next tutor. Making a ”How to create your own Future bass snares and water droplet effects” video atm. Cheers, Matt

Now that I've gotten to my PC and set up one of these chains using 3rd party effects I'm finding that the chain is pretty heavy on the CPU. My question about this is, do you then bounce the vocals after you are done with processing through the chain?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +1

Hi Quantum, what third party fx are you using in your chain? For my setup it's totally fine to run these chains on a few vocal tracks with the plugins I am using for vocals. But it really depends on your setup, so if you feel it's heavy for your CPU you can always bounce. Or just replace some of those effects that are demanding. It's easy to find the "cpu thief" by opening up the Performance (CPU load) inspector in Bitwig Studio and run the project and just mute effects as you go. Watch which effects that demand the most cpu and replace those with a more light cpu. I don't feel you need the most uber heavy compressor or EQs on vocals if all you do is remove some lows and do some light compression. But it all depends on the content of course.
Experiment with this fx-replacement and see where you end up. It's often better to stay away from uber heavy plugins if your cpu is not up for it. IT's better to be able to work flawlessly without cpu hickups.
At least that's my way of approaching the cpu-hog issue.
Bouncing can be great sometimes though when you know that you don't need to go back and fiddle with the original content. You can of course save the original track and just de-activate it, but I think it's more of a hassle to have tracks spread out everywhere. I try to keep my projects rather clean and work "light". If I'm on a laptop I stay away from all cpu heavy plugs even though I'm on a quite powerful MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) with 2.7 ghz i7. Just to be able to work fast.
      It's all personal preferences. ;)
In Bitwig the native plugins for compression and eq work fine in most cases. But for reverb and delay, use the best you got (that your processor can handle).
Hope I did make any sense Quantum.

Dear Mattias i find your video and suggestions are very effective. please suggest how to activate my mike which is attached to Bitwig through scarlet solo as controller.
input Buses I have selected as follows:
    for mono in -----2nd bus
    for mic 1 ---------2nd bus
for impact lx mini both 1 & 2 buses.
My LX NINI PLAYS WELL BUT I cannot activate my mike hence signal never comes in the scene or in track or clip.
please suggest how to make my mike responsive so that the input sent through mike is received through BITWIG.

Hi is there a way we you can save the vocal chain and the DAW Bitwig open up everytime with the vocal chain in place?

what's the difference between "FX Layer" and "Chain"? I'm a Ableton user so I just Ctrl+G to group the FX

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад +1

Hi Koro, the difference is how the devices inside these plugins receives the incoming audio.
1.FX Layer = Parallell processing for each plugin device in the stack.
2.Chain = Serial processing for the plugin devices you add in the chain.
1.FX Layer will have its own output for each plugin you stack up in the FX Layer. You can also see these physical outputs if you open the mixer and push that little (double arrow) icon at the top of the track.
This means if you add a Blur device and a saturation device in the FX Layer stack. The channel mix will be a parallell processing, since the Blur will be processed and output as one stereo pair. And the Saturation device will also be output on it's own as a stereo out. And at the end of the FX Layer it SUMs to the top master FX Layer device.
      2. The Chain device is processing in serial so each device will lead into the next, compared to how the FX Layer works. Though you can achieve a sort of parallell processing if you adjust the mix knob on each device in the plugin chain since you will feed part of the neutral signal if you push mix below 100% on a device in the chain.
Hope the info helps! Thanks! // Matt 🌞

Hey, yeah its big difference. I did a post on RUclips some week back:
Another Quick Tip for anyone using Bitwig Studio DAW!
I recently got the following question: What's the difference between the FX Layer and the Chain device.
      Short answer:
1.FX Layer = Parallell processing for each plugin device in the stack. Also gives you individual child-outputs (via the double arrow icon) in the mixer for "easy mixing".

    • @MattiasHolmgren

Hey Tiera, how are you doing? Do you want to know how to record audio in Bitwig in general? Just create an Audio track (you can press CMD+SHFT+T to create an Audio Track), Arm the track (pressing the Record "dot" button on the new track) and press the transport bar Record button. Then just press Play and audio will be recorded. Or are you interested to know about my recording chain, how I go about recording audio in my studio?

@@PilotMoochi3 Yes, you need an audio interface, I use a Duet 2 for Mac with 2 audio ins / outs. What kinds of computer are you using? Laptop / Desktop? Pc / Mac? In Bitwig go to the Dashboard and press the Settings / Audio Tab and see what the "Input" and "Output" reads. There you can select which audio input / output to use for the software.

No probs, if you don't have an audio interface for your PC for recording audio I would suggest the Steinberg UR 22 mk2 - amzn.to/2M2AXtX It's an excellent interface with both audio in / outs + midi + good AD/DA converters. That's what I use on my PC. But mostly I work on the Mac with the Duet 2 (which also works with PC these days!!!) amzn.to/2VLeCVV The Duet is more expensive but it's on a totally different level in audio quality. Though I've used the Steinberg UR22 for many voice over and guitar recordings for clients. Hope the info helps. Thanks!
