I somehow convinced my dad to watch this film a few weeks ago by just randomly recommending it. He’s in his 70’s so has a very specific old person sense of humour. When I asked him the next day if he enjoyed it he said he had tears streaming down his face as it was “the funniest shit” he’d ever seen in his life.
Does it make me an old man if I agree with him?
Your dad is old enough to remember the kids' action shows in the 1960s with marionette puppets, so that is another layer of freaking hysterical.
When I watched this in the UK on release via a new spangled DVD thingy at the age 32 it had much the same effect on me.
My dad randomly started watching it on TV one night, and was ecstatic to tell me about it the next day. I humoured him by letting him tell me acting like I didn't know. Now it's one of his favourite films.
I knew Stone and Parker created good stuff, but I did not expect Team America to be as hilarious as it was! I was crying watching it in the theater!!!
Matt Stone and Trey Parker are just comedic geniuses.
A world without these two is a sad one.
Once they pass away I’m punching out too I can’t see a decent world without them
@@fynnthefox9078 they ain’t done yet
You mean Matt DAMON and Trey Parker
@@wahn10 no Matt Stone and Trey Parker
"He's the best martial artist Detroit has to offer" was a line waaaay ahead of its time lol.
Lol og dust hahahhaha
Explain?
It's funny because back in the day when the karate craze was going on back in the 80's after all the martial arts movies started coming out Detroit actually did have some of the best martial artists around. Flint Michigan too can still drive through that ghost town area of Flint and drive by a bunch of shuttered martial arts dojo's. My dad has all kinds of stories about them from back when he was a young man.
It reminded me of Kentucky Fried Movie.
@@Labyrinth6000 It's because that idiot on TikTok/YT who does self defense videos is from Detroit lol
“He died of Aiiiiids!” That line never stops being funny.
This movie is still one of the funniest experiences in theaters I ever had. People who haven't reacted to this movie don't know what they're missing
We laugh because it's funny, and we laugh because it's true. Some people may dismiss it but it's more than just a comedy - it's a work of art.
Loss of a few thousand brain cells, perhaps?
you know you watch too many reaction videos when you start replacing the word "watch" with the word "react"
Probably because they've already seen it. It won't be a legit reaction if it's not a first-time watch.
I had an older cousin that took as many dates as he could to watch this movie in the theaters while it was out to see if the girl had the same sense of humor as he did. Struck out on every one of them.
I saw this in the cinema back in the day. I have never seen a cinema laugh anywhere near as much - people screaming with laughter, tears running down their face, gasping for breath. It was completely contagious.
"It's puppetry? Ooohhh no" XD
"How hard was this to produce?"
Matt and trey: ide rather die than do this kind of thing again
"I'm so Ronery" is still one of my favorite parts of the movie. Loved watching your reactions, this is still comic gold almost 20 years later.
No joke but my sister cried at that scene
What I love most about this movie is that its a one and done. No sequels needed 👌
Or reboot for nostalgia's sake
I need another one though
It's a bit a sequel to Thunderbirds , puppet series from 1965 - 66 . 32 episodes each 50 min long , they solved slow productions filming on several set at same time .
@@pete_lind I always felt it was like Thunderbirds on acid!
Aside from the fact that because it was puppets, this was the longest and hardest Trey and Matt had ever worked on a production and caused them more stress than anything else they had ever done. It also nearly cost them their friendship and they swore to never do another project like this ever again.
You had me at dicks fuck assholes" is still the best line 😂
Gross. But yeah!
That one is great but I always loved the " Going down Bakalakadaka street"
“Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?” is my personal favorite.
Matt and Trey submitted the song “I’m so ronery” for Best Song Academy Award consideration when this movie came out.
Best song ever
Matt and Trey have said that filming this was the worst period in their lives if that helps in understanding how difficult it was. There were nearly 300 individual marionettes and around 1000 costumes. The film had to be constantly rewritten to accommodate the limited movement of the marionettes. Since they were all used to a different degree the batteries that controlled the facial movement would die at different times with no warning so that would often ruin takes and they got in it with the MPAA who kept trying to give the film an NC-17 rating. They couldn't even screen the film for review even by the producers because it was still being shot and scored right up till it's release in cinemas so critics were just given a 20 minute sizzle reel of whatever footage they had ready to go. I'm honestly amazed they even wanted to keep doing South Park after that.
During the final season of Stargate SG-1 there's a segment in the 200th episode where they use the same company that made the marionettes for Team America and do a comedic recreation of an early scene from the first episode. It's genius. Even for that small segment it took quite awhile to film.
An amazing episode of Stargate
Sure, but South Park is 100% computer animated and has been after season 1. It's trivial to knock out an episode.
They didn't not want to work with puppets again, they didn't want to make movies of any kind anymore. This is still the last film they've done, nearly 20 years ago now - they have since done several episodic trilogies, musicals, and video games.
Allegedly according to the behind the scenes stuff, when they screened a part of the movie to studio execs they showed the very first part with the shhty ass marionettes and one of them yelled out "THEY FKKED US". Thinking they'd taken the money and wasted it.
Bravo! While other reactors are watching Independence Day, you guys did the true all American movie! Fuck yeah!
My parents took me to the movie theater in 2004 when this came out ... I was born in 97 so I was about 7 years old back then 🤣 They both had no idea what the movie was they just figured it was fine for kids since the characters are puppets, apparently my dad got a few looks of disagreement and made us leave at the puke scene. Overall awesome memory even if I don't remember it that well.
How are parents so clueless?
I remember volunteering when I was 16 at the daycare I used to attend as a kid. One of the counsellors once mentioned South Park and ALL the kids piped up that they watched it too! I was dumbfounded. I guess all their parents just figured it was a cartoon so it must be for kids? (which is how lots of kids my age got away with watching Ren & Stimpy back in the day)
@@zammmerjammer I’m only 18 but damn aren’t I glad my dad showed me ren and stimpy otherwise I never would of heard about it.
@@zammmerjammer South Park is a bit different as it did bleep out the swearing. But parents allowing their kids to play the likes of Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto on their consoles when games are age rated is another thing entirely. All too often these days parents will just shove their kids in front of the TV/Internet and let them watch/play whatever they want as long as it keeps them quiet.
Did the f**k scene come before or after the puke scene?
@@zammmerjammer how many kids you got ? Just wondering
This is one of those few comedies where not only do most of the jokes land but just as your still recovering from one joke another banger gets you laughing twice as much. 🤣
Fun fact: Bill Pope was the director of photography of the Matrix trilogy. He agreed to do this movie, to the surprise of Trey and Matt, because he was sick and tired of filming with green screen. This project had zero green screen; everything was in camera. He was thrilled he had the opportunity to film actual real-life stuff for a change.
I forgot how absolutely hilarious this film is. I was crying.
The wheeze laugh 😂
Loved when the Mrs. did the puppet movements 😁
Funny thing it's accurate about the film actors guild 😁
I’m showing my age, but I call that type of laugh ‘the Muttley laugh’!
@@realburglazofficial2613
I do the same sometimes when I laugh too much.
Mostly because I run out of breath a lot easily these days 😂
That hand to hand combat part at the beginning gets me rolling every single time
One of the Funniest movies ever. I've never laughed so hard in the cinema before. I wish there was a sequel, but Trey and Matt found it such a difficult movie to shoot. I think in the end it was worth it being so unbelievably funny.
3:45 - One of the best choreographed fight scenes ever put to film.
The wire work is insane
They modelled it after Steven Seagal and his cheesy moves!
@@JO-ly3hi Those puppets moved way too much to be modeled after Seagal. In fact, I moved more typing this comment than Seagal does in any four films combined.
@@donkrouskop4753 Possibly true! But they and you do not posess his true power! The power of his microwaved hair helmet.
This movie is offensive on so many levels, and that is exactly what makes it amazing and hysterical!!!
Totally 😂 And equally and fairly offensive to all, so at least in that way it's inclusive 😂 😉
Also it's fair to mention Baldwin shot and killed a crew member. And Laura Bush, Vince Neil and many others caused vehicular death
Inclusively offensive 😜
theres an uncut version that is even more crazy
18 years later this move is still funny as all hell.
They actually hired amazing puppeteers for this, Trey and Matt felt pretty bad when they told them to make all of the movements and walking more and more awkward.
'shhhhhhh, it's not claymation"
I spat my beer out 🤣
Amongst many other things this film is a love letter to the work (some would say art) of Mr Gerry Anderson, a true legend.
She laughs the most at the walking lol
The whole marionette thing was Matt & Trey paying homage to a number of British kid's shows from the 60's, namely Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet & Stingray. All of which had equally hilarious puppeteering and awkward use of real people in shots.
Another fun fact, according to Matt & Trey Alec Baldwin approached them asking if he could play himself in the film and they told him no because "We thought we could play him better"
AMEN!!!! They didn't even mention Gerry or the Thunderbirds.
Of course Alec Baldwin would be arrogant enough to insist on playing himself in a film making fun of him.
@@forrestdorman4870 "You are worthress, Arec Barrwin!"
@@forrestdorman4870 Or just has a sense of humour?
Not the movie reaction I was expecting....but the reaction I never knew I needed 😂
It was apparently an absolutely nightmare making this movie. The puppeteers were actually TOO good so they were told to make it look worse cause it’s funnier that way. Not to mention the puppeteers basically had no direction and were told to just wing it on really complicated movements
I think I heard that somewhere else as well
This movie has a special place as the last one I saw in theaters with my friend before he passed.
fuck yeah
Matt Stone and Trey Parker are satirical geniuses.
You really learn a lot about a person from how they react to this movie... 🤣 Happy 4th of July!
Yeah, you find out whether they're a dick, a pussy, or an asshole.

@@Gnossiene369 You missed the point lol
When they were little I showed the "international sign for distress" to my kids. We used it in various situations such as skiing. Although I occasionally wondered if that caused other parents to think we'd let them watch the whole movie (we didn't).
That is my favorite part of the entire movie.
I'm now 45 years old....Too this day If someone in a store says 'Can I help you?', My response is generally, 'Why? did I give you "the international sign of distress"'. Lol.
My best friend taught his kids (one of which is my god daughter) it as well. I felt duty bound to augment this with 'I need an Adult!' from Family Guy. They're grown up mostly now....but his oldest, at family cookouts and parties will holler 'I need an adult!' or perform the 'international sign of distress'. It is generally interpreted as 'Whoever is closest to the cooler or fridge, please bring me a beer.'
Watched this as a kid here in Finland and this has been one of my all time favorite movies. Some things simply cannot be forgotten from this movie.
An instant CLASSIC!!! One of my ALL-TIME favorite comedies.
The off center finger to the lips as foreshadowing was an unexpected and hilarious touch.
21:27 - the best “do you have a sense of humor test” out there😂😂😂😂🤦🏻♂️
I'm still upset that the fight choreography in this film was snubbed at the Oscars. So underrated.
The music while Gary pukes is so damn epic. I love how it gets loud and intense then chills out while he catches his breath only to get epic again. Pure brilliance👌
Gonna watch this now, just wanted to say before hand that you folks keep doing what you do, it's very much appreciated.
Cheers from Scotland, Happy 4th of July and best wishes to you and all Americans 🍻❤
This is my favorite Matt Damon performance.
"Those weren't blanks" is the most underrated part of this whole video.
Matt Damon's puppet looks just like the kid from the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie.
Holy crap you're right...just like Charlie!
@@MrsMovies And Ben Afleck is his everlasting cockblocker!
Lots of parents thought this was for kids when it first came out, Not my Dad tho, he intentionally showed me this knowing fully what it was.
The Matt Damon joke wasn't in the original story, but when Matt and Trey saw just how derpy the puppet looked they just couldn't resist.
Also about the walking, they actually had to get the puppeteers to intentionally make the walking more clumsy.
I'm also happy Matt Damon has a sense of humor and appreciated the joke. Normally actors don't like the mockery at all or just take a while to understand why something like that would be a joke (I mean, Matt still didn't understand, but on the bright side he also didn't get offended by his portrayal on the movie)
They literally talked about that. More than once. Why do people obsess about “fun facts” to the point of spamming? You can’t feel that insignificant
@@Gnossiene369 That's something that annoys me also. I don't mind a fun fact. As in a fun fact that hasn't been repeated a hundred times. But to still go along with posting said fact when you knew people in the video had already addressed it is stupid. It either means you couldn't wait to finish the video before letting everybody know this amazing fact or it means you did hear them bring it up but don't care because damn it this was your time to shine, and you're gonna shine regardless and get that approval from everybody else. Now you get to feel validated in your abilities to retain film trivia of the fun variety, and you can rest easy now you have typed it out and clicked post.
@@randymarsh6363 Um, just relax and have some Tegridy weed already there Marsh.
mr. movie already explained that
29:04 The crazy thing is, that head shot is far more realistic than any horror movie ever made.
Oh please
@@Gnossiene369 shit!!! if i could post those kind of links here I'd show you stuff you would never forget... and it looks more like this than whatever horror movie you can name.
This movie is also an homage to the Gerry Anderson television shows of the late 1960s, such as Captain Scarlett and The Thunderbirds, which main characters were marionettes. I loved both shows as a kid and Team America is one of those movies I watch once a year. It's a total scream.
They even have a character which looks like Brains dressed as Parker shaking Martinis in the party scene. And I always wondered what kind of a freak Lady Penelope would be in the bedroom. We all got to see when this came out, in full colour S U P E R M A R I O N A T I O N!
Haven't seen Mrs. Movie smile and laugh this much since Naked Gun! This was fun!
I read somewhere that the puppet scene at the beginning was their to troll a film executive who thought that puppets would look cheap. His colleagues gave them the money to make it anyway. So they made the first few seconds of the film look as awful as possible to make him freak
Out!
"He's quoted as yelling "My god they've fucked us".
The finest example of the puppeteers craft ever conceived.
The amount of skill and imagination that went into this is nothing less than staggering.
Parker and Stone should have gotten a Special Oscar for this.
"It was exactly what I thought it would be"
Claymation? 🤣
George Clooney is actually a South Park fan and he's done voice work for them. You would never recognize him though, since they make him do sounds like dog barks lol.
😂 I think the only one you can recognise his voice on is the doctor at the beginning of the South Park movie
You had me in tears at the puke scene... thank you... brightened my morning :)
I literally just got out of watching Thor: Love and Thunder and when Matt came on screen I said “Matt Daaamon.”
"everything is okay everybody, we stopped the terrorists" is still the funniest line in a movie Ive seen
2004 was a brutal year for Matt and Trey, because on top of South Park they also had to make a difficult puppet movie.
1999 was absolute hell as well
@@catsandalcohol99 I've listened to a lot of their commentary, they seem to have fewer bad memories about 1999. Probably because they were still riding their first wind, had plenty of ideas, and it was all animation. Come Season 8 in 2004 they seemed to not know what to do with the show and making a movie with marionettes is something that needs your complete devotion.
Trey and Matt are comedic geniuses. Fun to watch this and pick out all the real world items used as props like the basket full of "Goldfish" crackers on a native's head.
25:26 "That sound. . . Is from Frozen."
She says with the tone of having horrific flashbacks, amd I die laughing.
Still one of my favourite movies of all time. Rumour has it we're finally getting a sequel.
Such a great movie! Trey and Matt always put out hilarious stuff.
A non-stop laughing experience. This is a great movie. Brings back the British TV shows Thunderbird, Captain scarlett , from the 1960's super maranation.
Lol 23:40 iv never seen him laugh that hard....that's how we laugh wen u get scared watching horror movies lol 😆 😂 😅 🤣 ur reactions are priceless....
The movie craftmanship is really impressive. I had the same reaction watching for the first time, "how did they even do this" aways crossed my mind.
I literally cried laughing watching this in the theater when it came out
Mrs Movies laugh is contagious! 🤣 This movie is so funny! And Mr Movie is right, the unrated version is so hilarious and the sex scene is hilarious.
I love the part where they are standing in the wreckage that was Paris and they are saying “You’re welcome” Lol.
i watched this masterpiece when i was like 5 with my grandma and didn’t understand how funny it was
They nail Garofalo!
She was all over the news back then and that's EXACTLY what she would do!
I was screaming at my TV about it long before this movie came out
There’s a feature on the disc of the making of this movie. Matt and Trey were miserable and wish they never thought of the puppet idea. It’s a throwback to the Thunderbirds show from way back. There are also interviews with them on talk shows talking about how they’ll never make a puppet movie again 🤣 Happy 4th of July guys!
That Kellyanne Conway hair flip at 3:30…nailed it.
'Those weren't blanks!'. Dam, that was an unappreciated line, lol
The cockroach nod to "Men In Black" classic and definitely cracked a rib for the Film Actors Guild which was 💯 % on point.
This movie is without question the most accurate and true depiction and representation of the US military government and culture 💯✅😂 and I was Lucky enough to see this in theaters when it came out 🤣
That's like the saying the Mickey Rooney portrayal of an asian guy in Breakfast at Tiffany's is "the most accurate and true depiction of asian culture." Such an absolutely brainless comment.

"Maaatt Daamoon" is still a thing for my friends and me! ^^
3:45 was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen. The whole theater was laughing so hard at it.
I'd forgotten how funny this movie was.
17:12 Puppet Sex !
23:03 I've been that sick before :D
Kim Jong's "I'm So Ronery" kills me every time.
I remember laughing uncontrollably at "I'M SO RONRY" in the theater..
Trivia: Back when the movie was in production Parker & Stone did a joke on the movie executives. They showed the opening scene w the cheesy puppet and crudely drawn background.
They were worried until the scene continued and showed the real puppets and scenery.
Haha
Apparently when they saw the french mini puppets at the beginning a producer yelled "sh#t they f*cked us!" Bc they had spent so much money making the movie lol
Made me remember how much I absolutely loved this movie. I never laughed so hard in the movie theatre ever. Literally almost passed out, especially during the puking scene
I love how he’s like looking at her the whole time to see her reaction 😂😂 this movie is a classic
Right off the bat she asked how hard was it to produce. Apparently the making of this film was excruciatingly hard. Many of the puppeteers were some of the best in the world and knew they wouldnt get an opportunity very often to have a film show off their skill.
And they never did. They were too good so Matt and trey told them to ugly it up
The puking scene reaction was hilarious :)
The movie with both the best puking and sex scene of all time. Neither one fails to make double over laughing each and every time.
The camera knocking him over on the motorcycle gets me every damn time..
It's filmed in Supermarionation.
A term coined by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. who created British T.V. series in the '60's like THUNDERBIRDS, JOE 90, STINGRAY, and FIREBALL XL5 all using these style puppets.
The ironic thing about this, Alec Baldwin is the only actor who doesn't shoot at anybody.

When the movie came out, I bought the unrated version, not realizing there was a difference. Oops. Mom was never the same again.
Saw this in theaters as a 14 year old with a couple friends. Loved the movie but I remember the ushers not letting us back into the theater after we went to get our seats then left to buy snacks in the lobby. My friend's dad (who bought our tickets) was planning on doing some work on his laptop in the Starbucks next door but he ended up having to buy a ticket as well so we could watch the movie.

Absolute hilarious movie. Hadn't seen it in years so was great to watch it again with you guys
The British TV shows this is based on were my childhood. You should get yourselves some 'Thunderbirds' 'Captain Scarlet' and 'Stingray' for your youngsters. Joe 90 was also a good un.
@dmt Handmade I do remember those THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO !!😃 this was very much a tribute to those supermarionation classics and yet sooo politically incorrect 😆 this was almost painfully funny ! there was also a DIRE STRAITS video for Calling Elvis that done in the same style by the original creator Gerry Anderson . you check that out keep quality comedy alive Have a good one CHEERS .🙏
Apparently the film-makers were big fans when they were kids but thought it was all a bit silly. They developed huge respect for Gerry Anderson when making this film, frequently wondering how he managed to do some of the things they were attempting to do.There's a fair few subtle references to Anderson stuff scattered through this one.
I watched a lot of Thunderbirds in college when the now defunct channel TechTV played it every evening.
Check out 21 Century Films on RUclips. They did a couple new Thunderbird episodes for the 50th anniversary using audio from a vinyl release. They also produce a new show called Nebula-75
I find it really funny that the America, Fuck Yeah (Bummer remix) has actually become a real thing movies and movie trailers do now.
You two are the perfect example of the fact that you don't have to crack nuts to enjoy them. Greetings from Belgium.
I don't think I've ever laughed harder in my life than during that vomiting scene. Glad I'm not the only one that gets red-faced from cracking up over that...
