Faith No More stylistically is all over the genre map, chili peppers were one trick pony‘s, There’s no comparison, I don’t hate the chili peppers but Anthony Kiedis is not even in the same building as Mike Patton vocally
It says a lot that my favorite RHCP songs featured another vocalist alongside Kiedis. That person being Josh Klinghoffer, the guy who replaced, and then was replaced by, John Fruscianti. Look Around and Monarchy of Roses are good examples. And Josh had a song called Anymore that's just him signing.
Fun fact: Jim Martin (the guitar player) went to high school with Cliff Burton (Metallica) and they were in a band together before they joined Faith no More and Metallica respectively
This is the song Corey Taylor apparently returns too when he is having a hard time it inspires him to keep going and what makes him want to be a musician.
when Mike found out Anthony was talking smack. Anthony was accusing Patton of using his dance moves. He did a Mr. Bungle show where the whole band dressed up like RHCP and played all their songs. Just to piss them off. Patton wins in a fight. Lol.
There has been lot's about the beef between Patton and Kiedis. It kicked off after the album that Epic is on (The Real Thing) came out in 1989 and Kiedis said Patton was copying his style, or needed to get a style of his own. FNM never really cared and if anything it gave them some free publicity. Patton has gone on record as being critical of rockstars with ego’s and always gone against the trope himself. Things went really bad at the end of the 90's when RHCP and Mr Bungle (who were both on Warner Bros recond label) released albums with very similar titles - Californication and California respectively. The story goes that Kiedis got the record company to delay the Mr Bungle release so that RHCP's album would come out first. Then he got Mr Bungle kicked off a number of high profile festivals in Europe and Australia. In fairness, Mr Bungle did go on stage dressed as RHCP and played some of their songs whilst also being less than complimentary (look up the video, it's WILD!). FNM and Mr Bungle have both utilised many different styles in their music, funk being one of them. FNM and Mr Bungle though progressed way beyond this and have done so much diverse stuff it's actually mind boggling. RHCP have always just been RHCP...

Roddy Bottom (now of the band Man on Man) plays keyboards for Faith No More. The fish was a gift from Björk, and used to sit in a bowl ontop of a piano in Roddy's Mom's house. PETA had a fit about the scene in the video and I recall an MTV interview with Bill (the bass player) and Roddy where they ask about the fish and one of them say something like (paraphrasing) "it gave the fish a part of its personality that it may not have known about before"
Jim Martin is their Guitarist. He played in FNM from 84 till 93. He was replaced by Trey from Mr. Bungle in 94'. Roddy Bottum is FNM's Keyboardist/Pianist. Hes an open Homosexual & brings alot of the Pop & Melodies to FNM's Music. RHCP started in 82'. First album 84'. Were always just a funk/punk band. FNM started in 82' as well but were more Post Punk & New Wave influenced by Bands like Killing Joke & Public Image Ltd. Who would Win in a Fight? Well Keidis is more physically fit & probably Physically Stronger but Mike Patton is Crazy af. Keidis was jealous & felt threatened. Patton runs circles around him vocally & with talent.
My feelings about the beef between FNM and RHCP can best be summed up by this iconic quote from Nick Cave: "I'm forever near a stereo saying, 'What the fuck is this garbage?' And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.”
If you love piano…you need to check out TORI AMOS!!! In concert, she’s typically seen straddling a piano bench while playing TWO PIANOS AT ONCE…one on her left and one on her right! Btw, knowing y’all like Tool….she has a song called “Past The Mission” that has Maynard on backing vocals!!
I cant believe yall just now doing this song ! But Anywho , FNM is a band where every album sounds different and was ahead of the times on each one ! Not to mention the MANY Mike Patton albums he did that were off the wall in different forms . Like Mr. Bungle . That was crazy and was before he joined FNM . I loved the original FNM singer too , but Mike skyrocketed them to king status ! But every one in that band , drums , bass , keys and guitarist with Mikes one of a kind voice and lyrics made FNM a must know band !
Rap metal was already around, anthrax did I'm the man in 1984, run DMC had a few heavy guitar driven songs even before the Aerosmith collaboration. Not to mention the John Lydon/afrikka bambaata collaboration
Another of the multitude of reasons why the 90s was the greatest era in music. In all time I know people like the 60s and '70s but the '90s resonates with me much more
The 90s really had the best production as well. There are a lot of straight classic records from the early to mid 90s that you have to turn up the volume for if you've been listening to stuff from other eras, because the dynamics are way better, which you can't achieve if you're peaking the audio all the time.
It was hilarious that back when this first came out (before the internet) that not only was the song a big hit, but there was SO much controversy about the fish out of water dying (or not) at the end of the video.
FNM started '79 and RHCP started in '82. SF/LA rivals Check out the Mike Patton/Dillinger escape plan collab EP especially the track "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things" Check out the Faith No More concert where they cosplayed as RHCP love the channel, you guys have gotten me (metalhead) more into rap again lately.
Holy shit guys!!! You're only NOW checking out Epic by FNM!?!??!!! This ENTIRE album is PURE🔥🔥🔥!! As for the fight between RHCP & FNM...all I can say about that is both bands mix Rick with other genres like rap and blues and funk....both are AWESOME, but different in their own unique ways...as you can probably tell from this song,FNM brings more of a Rock element to their music...whereas RHCP tends to lean in a more funk direction.however, both groups mix generes.both are fantastic!!!!😄I've seen both live several times in the 90's.Roddy Bottom was the guitarist of FNM at the time...piano.player as well.😊 BOTH bands are legends of the 90's!🎶✌
The FNM album this was on was called “The Real Thing”. The band had recorded all the music, but had no lyrics or vocals so they were looking for a new singer. Mike Patton was hired from Mr. Bungle and he wrote all the lyrics and melodies over a period of about 10 days. They wouldn’t let him even change anything about the songs. He modeled his appearance and dancing for this song and video to mock Anthony Keidis because Anthony had accused him of copying RHCP with Mr. Bungle, but Mike always had tons of styles of music in his band. Later, Faith No More played a Halloween show dressed up as RHCP, played some of their stuff really badly, and pretended to shoot up on stage. It was pretty rough. The big salt-in-the-wound moment was when FNM won a Grammy for this song.
"Epic" ruled rock radio throughout the 1990's. MTV played the video for the song quite often as well. The video was somewhat provocative too, given how it ends with a fish out of water and gasping at the air. I read the lyrics as if they were an updated version of the sentiments expressed in The Rolling Stones "I Can't Get No Satisfaction", that is, as push back against the consumer pressures put on society by commercial interests and the impossibility of attaining the idealized good life depicted in advertising. As for the question and answer, "What is it? It's it", well, this is a bit cheeky, but Faith No More is from San Francisco and in nearby Burlingame there is a company that has been making an ice cream sandwich called "It's-It" since 1976. So a "It's-It" is a slab of vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two oatmeal cookies and dipped in chocolate! [grin]
Their album The Real Thing is fantastic. There is a piano part at the end of “Self Destructor” by CheVelle. They said that part was an homage to “Epic”.
I've never been a big red hot chili peppers fan but yes this does sound like suck my kiss. I even knew that back in the 90 early 90s. I believe what is it was directed at Anthony.
Mike Patton has one of the best vocal ranges since the 90's and Jim Martin is an amazing guitar player,,,Jim Martin also had a guest appearance in Bill and Ted's bogus journey,,, Also check out FNM cover of (Easy)
I was right about 10 years old when this song came out and it blew me away. This and Cult of Personality by Living Colour shaped what I got into far more than Smells Like Teen Spirit did.
These guys turned the music scene on its head almost as much as the RUN DMC/Aerosmith crossover did. But the question isn't who did it first, it's who did it better. And, for the record, you always, always bet on crazy...trust me, those tiny guys can turn into a tasmanian devil at the drop of a hat...and they are brutal. I saw a 150 pound guy that's 5'6" throw a 6' 200 pound beast of a man through every window in the victim's car, break his neck, throw his corpse to the ground and then started screaming at the corpse. He literally said, "You just had to fuk around, didn't you, couldn't leave me alone, could you...now look at you." And then he just walked back into the bar and got a beer. Was as polite as a man could ever to the police that arrested him too. Crazy...
Big Jim Martin on guitar, they fell out after the Angel dust album and he left. Keyboard player was Roddy Bottum, he came out in 93 a brave move back then in rock, and he said he was surprised with his name that nobody guessed
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers has been around since the late 70's but they didn't release their first album until 84 but they were a straight up funk band and then transitioned into what they are now by incorporating aspects of rock, punk, metal, grunge and even pop. I'm not the biggest fan of The Chilli Peppers, only liking maybe 3 of their songs but I think that's because they did jump around too much and couldn't find their own sound for a long time, because it wasn't like the incorporation of all those different styles was from a wide skill set, it was more from indecision than proficiency. Faith No More on the other hand released their first album in 1985 and was (in my opinion) more of the typical underground rock sound of the time. Then sometime between 87 and 88 they fired their original lead singer Chuck Mosley and replaced him with Mike Patton who brought in a wider range of sounds and styles which (I feel) were executed more naturally than The Chilli Peppers attempts and that's what irritated Anthony Kiedis, so he talked some smack and Mike Patton clapped back and back and forth for a little while until it just kinda faded away. That said I'd like to clarify that I'm not a huge Faith No More fan either also only liking about 3 songs the same as with The Chilli Peppers but for different reasons. Mainly most of their music just didn't hit home with me, just never made me feel any sort of way about any of it. (Except Epic, I love this song) as to who'd when in a fight I'd say back in the day Mike Patton would have moped the floor with Anthony Kiedis but if it went down today I think Anthony might have the upper hand having stayed more physically active and into sports like skateboarding whereas Mike I don't think has done the same, not saying he hasn't but I haven't seen anything about him doing anything of the sort.
This was indeed their breakthrough. Not my favourite FNM song by a long way but great reaction as always. Midlife Crisis is a 🔥 FNM song for next time.
It was by far the biggest American single. And if I'm not mistaken the music was already done and then they fired Chuck from the band so Mike came in to fill lyrics and angel dust was their first album as a collaborative unit
Yes, everything Mike Patton does in this video visually is done to mock Anthony Kiedis. Their music isn't terribly similar, but Patton went out of his way to make fun of how Kiedis moves and "dances" - this wasn't the beginning of their beef, but it was the lightning that set everything between them on fire.
The guitar player was Jim Marten. He was asked to leave the band sometime because of substance abuse. FNM is actually the progenitor of bands like Limp Bizkit, Lincoln Park.
Back when Regis Philbin was hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, I remember seeing Faith No More's drummer Roddy Bottum as a contestant. It wasn't a celebrity episode. He just showed up as a regular guy and nobody made any mention of it.

Falling to Pieces is 🔥
This whole album is epic !
It's said about way more people/bands than is necessary (or true) but Faith No More was, indeed, ahead of its time with this style of music.
Excellent reaction! “Zombie Eaters” would be a great next review from FNM
FNM are legends, unique, influential.. So many good songs..
My feelings about the beef between FNM and RHCP can best be summed up by this iconic quote from Nick Cave: "I'm forever near a stereo saying, 'What the fuck is this garbage?' And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.”
Mike Patton is a beautiful, brilliant, musical genius.
That is definitely an 80's sweater. I recall FNM hitting before RHCP gained fame.
I was fortunate enough to see them opening for Billy Idol. Excellent Show.
Past the mission is actually Trent Reznor singing. Maynard is on Muhammad my friend. She's amazing live and yes she plays two pianos often!
@@Kelly30stm
Crap!
Damn it...I got mixed up for a minute...lol. Good catch!
@@PhantomOfTheMall no worries! I love them both!
I’ve seen her live, she’s amazing ✨
I cant believe yall just now doing this song ! But Anywho , FNM is a band where every album sounds different and was ahead of the times on each one ! Not to mention the MANY Mike Patton albums he did that were off the wall in different forms . Like Mr. Bungle . That was crazy and was before he joined FNM . I loved the original FNM singer too , but Mike skyrocketed them to king status ! But every one in that band , drums , bass , keys and guitarist with Mikes one of a kind voice and lyrics made FNM a must know band !
Yes FNM love this tune it’s what really got me into them back in the day
FROM OUT OF NOWHERE is 🔥🔥🔥
🤟🤟🤟🏴🏴🏴
Congratulations you two on being in love with other men thanks for letting everyone know
This is great. One of the 1st music videos I saw. It came on MTV right after Paradise City. The late 80s were awesome
Completely unique. A precursor to all rap metal.
Rap metal was already around, anthrax did I'm the man in 1984, run DMC had a few heavy guitar driven songs even before the Aerosmith collaboration. Not to mention the John Lydon/afrikka bambaata collaboration
@@k.h.1587 yeah, that’s not the same as basing your whole sound around that theme, is it?
Another of the multitude of reasons why the 90s was the greatest era in music. In all time I know people like the 60s and '70s but the '90s resonates with me much more
The 90s really had the best production as well. There are a lot of straight classic records from the early to mid 90s that you have to turn up the volume for if you've been listening to stuff from other eras, because the dynamics are way better, which you can't achieve if you're peaking the audio all the time.
@@DragonTigerBoss in just the fact of the explosion of genres of music that are the backbone of modern music today
This song is so cool. I love it as much as the first time I heard it when it first came out.
It was hilarious that back when this first came out (before the internet) that not only was the song a big hit, but there was SO much controversy about the fish out of water dying (or not) at the end of the video.
Mike Patton is a next next level
FNM started '79 and RHCP started in '82. SF/LA rivals
Check out the Mike Patton/Dillinger escape plan collab EP especially the track "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things"
Check out the Faith No More concert where they cosplayed as RHCP
love the channel, you guys have gotten me (metalhead) more into rap again lately.
Zombie eaters is one of the best song's ever written!!
Y'all have to check out the live performance when they imitated the Chili Peppers for almost an entire set and played their songs lmao. Greatness.
The pretend shooting up lmao was gold
I love this group.
This is one song that whenever it comes on my "classic rock" station, I turn that shit up!!
Us Def Leppard/Poison hair metal guys weren't sure what to make of this. We wanted to hate it, but it is unstoppable
Holy shit guys!!! You're only NOW checking out Epic by FNM!?!??!!! This ENTIRE album is PURE🔥🔥🔥!! As for the fight between RHCP & FNM...all I can say about that is both bands mix Rick with other genres like rap and blues and funk....both are AWESOME, but different in their own unique ways...as you can probably tell from this song,FNM brings more of a Rock element to their music...whereas RHCP tends to lean in a more funk direction.however, both groups mix generes.both are fantastic!!!!😄I've seen both live several times in the 90's.Roddy Bottom was the guitarist of FNM at the time...piano.player as well.😊
BOTH bands are legends of the 90's!🎶✌
Rock!!! Mix rock with other generes!!! Sorry I didn't catch that mistake before I sent it! ✌out dudes
Jim Martin was their guitarist then 🤘🏽
Roddy Bottum was on keyboards, Jim Martin was the guitarist
Mike was definitely ribbing Chuck Mosely with the nasal voice and dancing around and colorful clothing
My buddy n me got rear ended listening to this. The CD did not skip 🍺
[grin]
Saw them live in Bologna, Italy 1990. Amazing show
Totally not related to FNM but I’d love to see y’all get more into some Pearl Jam
I saw them in Philly a 6 or 7 years back. Still a great show. The drummer's epic dreadlocks are epically grey now.
This came out the year I graduated. Still loving it ❤❤
I love me some Faith No More …classic 😉🎶🎶EPIC ✨ has always been one of my fav all time songs so nostalgic 🎶music is life 🎶💯✌🏽
Their album The Real Thing is fantastic.
There is a piano part at the end of “Self Destructor” by CheVelle. They said that part was an homage to “Epic”.
Saw them live with Billy Idol and Wang Chung...son's favorite group😎😎😎
I've never been a big red hot chili peppers fan but yes this does sound like suck my kiss. I even knew that back in the 90 early 90s. I believe what is it was directed at Anthony.
You're not wrong about the sound... but this was actually released 3 years before suck my kiss 😆
I believe this song came out before Suck My Kiss
Mike Patton has one of the best vocal ranges since the 90's and Jim Martin is an amazing guitar player,,,Jim Martin also had a guest appearance in Bill and Ted's bogus journey,,, Also check out FNM cover of (Easy)
Been done did catch up ruclips.net/video/jrxS_IlpEls/видео.html
Major points for rockin the Acid Bath tee!! Fuck yeah!!
I was right about 10 years old when this song came out and it blew me away. This and Cult of Personality by Living Colour shaped what I got into far more than Smells Like Teen Spirit did.
This is one of those that I remember turning it all the with the windows down 🤘😎
These guys turned the music scene on its head almost as much as the RUN DMC/Aerosmith crossover did.
He literally said, "You just had to fuk around, didn't you, couldn't leave me alone, could you...now look at you."
And then he just walked back into the bar and got a beer.
Yup midlife crisis would be good next:)
I think they did that one.
It was by far the biggest American single. And if I'm not mistaken the music was already done and then they fired Chuck from the band so Mike came in to fill lyrics and angel dust was their first album as a collaborative unit
They did midlife crisis two years ago! Crazy right?
@@fast_mattw8059 I know now. Can't believe I forgot. It doesn't feel like two years ago at all.
Still love this song. I think i was about 11yrs old when it came out and it definitely was Epic😊
So many memories with this. Nice.
First saw these in 1992 with soundgarden and guns n roses... They were awesome 🤘🏻🤘🏻
FNM all the way!
My first concert in the 90ies was Faith No More, Guns´n Roses and Soundgarden and it was epic! Ha!😄
Yes! Not my first concert but I saw them in 92 when they opened for GNR and Metallica. Mike Patton was rolling around onstage in a plastic bag 😆
@@ShanLH5 Hahaha why does this not surprise me?
One of my crush’s growing up I was 19 years old when this came out 💃💃🔥🔥
The guitar player was Jim Marten. He was asked to leave the band sometime because of substance abuse.
FNM is actually the progenitor of bands like Limp Bizkit, Lincoln Park.
Jim was fired because he gave up on doing anything with or for the band. He wouldn't answer phone calls and stopped showing up for rehearsals and shit
Saw them at hammer jacks. Chili peppers never had vocals this good
Back when Regis Philbin was hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, I remember seeing Faith No More's drummer Roddy Bottum as a contestant. It wasn't a celebrity episode. He just showed up as a regular guy and nobody made any mention of it.
I think I heard that the record label was going to drop them unless they gave them a hit. So this is It!
Lol.... I see what you did there!! 😂
Morning guys! Oh man this song takes me back! They used to play it on MTV all the time! One of my favs! I LOVE the bass in this one!( And that guitar tho!! ) Lol. You should definitely check out the song "midlife crisis" next for sure!❤🤓🎸
They have ruclips.net/video/h2COS1UfKLI/видео.html
More Mike Patton!! He’s got 20 bands and 1000 songs
And this is only scratching the surface of FNM !!! They got better and better and better after this song !!!
I was listening to Faith no more in middle school circa 89 90
