I had been getting curly cuts for over 3 years. I told my stylist that I wanted to retain length and grow my hair out. She was all for it, and she never indicated that it would be difficult or that it was unrealistic. My hair grows really fast, so I was more than ready for this journey.
I first noticed splits 2 years ago when I got blown out for a color service. I didn’t think much of it, since I was also getting a maintenance cut.
Last year I stopped going to my stylist because after a color service (which wasn’t the color I asked for) I left the salon with chemical burns around my hairline and on my face. After not retaining any length for 3 years and that shoddy color service I was DONE. Months later I blew out my own hair to trim it and it was full of splits.
I grew up in the salon and don’t have the blind spots with styling and hair care that most lay people do. I did nothing wrong. My products and practices were and are still top notch. For people to imply that maybe we, the consumers, are at fault instead of leaving open the possibility that it may be the stylist or their method is just plain silly. It offends me.

This whole discussion is so interesting. I’m 41 years old and have been getting curly cuts
For YEARS and never heard of this cut it kinky no dc no oils methodology until maybe 2 months ago. My stylist charges me what he’s been charging for years and I’ve never had problems with my hair related to the cuts. I did go through two years of problems with heavy shedding related to c19 and in that period I lost a ton of hair. I think that too many people entered the curly natural hair market trying to develop methods based off of little experience with natural curls as the foundation. Curly hair stylist have been around forever but not so much in our community. Natural hair yes…but stylist that specialize in natural curl patterns were not found so easily. They were primarily in major cities and not as prevalent. Now there’s this boom of them charging 3-400 for a cut! Then when you ask about experience it’s 5 years or less doing actual curls. I think a lot of this is the issue. There is no one size fits all set or instructions for curly hair especially when many of us have 3-4 different curl patterns on our heads alone lol. People
Got so eager to coin a method they didn’t take the time to just absorb knowledge and actually learn the hair

I find the "no oils " method such a weird choice when combined with the other principles these stylist follow. They're asking for you to come in ever 3 months to cut your hair in a state where you can't fully see all the dead ends, while also styling your hair in a way where your ends are unprotected and needs daily maintenance to keep from matting, and you can't use oils or butters????? It just sounds like a recipe for disaster. Split ends and fairy knots galore. 🙃

I have no idea what is causing some ladies who are in the BGC community to have damaged hair while others do not have the same damage. What I will say is that no one should be put down or ridiculed because they experience issues with their hair while following the method. To me, the fact that these ladies were blocked seems like a missed opportunity for BGC to investigate the possibility and offer some assistance to Rosie and Shelly especially since they are not the only two ladies having the experience.

    • @1GoldenBreeze
      @1GoldenBreeze 10 месяцев назад

@@1love847 There really isn't much wrong with the method it's simply cleanse, condition, and style. The problem for some ladies seems to be a combination of the curly cut and not using leave-in or a dc. Even with that many ladies are not having an issue.
Personally, I became interested in them because I've never used raw oil or butter in my hair and I wear wash-n-go almost all the time. So for me, it was basically what I was already doing. I wasn't interested in curly cuts because I didn't want my hair short and angled even though it was cute, and I kept using leave-in and dc a couple times a year. I did however find the information about shampoo helpful and incorporated it into my routine.

    I was blocked as well!
This was truly a learning experience for me personally!
I have seen firsthand how cruel the internet can be and how unkind humans can be to others because they may not share the same experiences as others!
Lastly I finally understood what has been happening, so the reason I didn’t investigate why my hair was webbing is because it had become normalized in the community we follow! I was shocked when it was happening because I had never had that experience! I was getting regular cuts but my hair was becoming more difficult each time to detangle! Another thing is I found a few tree split ends and that got me very concerned but again I wasn’t thinking my hair would have my ends and hair looking like that!
Also my silk press stylist did something she had never done and that’s giving me a deep conditioner, she must have felt something when shampooing my hair!
One advise I can give is to just keep an eye on your hair and pay attention to how it behaves! Proper shampoo is very important , making sure the hair receives the proper moisture after shampooing is also important, for some a regular rinse out will deliver but for others it may not be enough!
So far most influencers that share this method publicly have been very upset with Shelly and I, however they have implemented all the things that we mentioned that has corrected or is helping the issues we are having!
I honestly believe you should only be concerned if you are having webbing, difficulty detangling or Velcro ends, if you are not having these issues you’re hair is possible okay!

Your hair is damaged by the method because you are liters breaking down your cuticle layer over time with the excess water. This is why is take 6moths+for some ladies for the process to begin “working”. What is truly happening is that the cuticle layer is being broken down with excessive washing and humectant use over time. The porosity is becoming higher. It’s all good for a while until the porosity becomes so high that you begin seeing splits. This is why there is a lack of length retention and why the split travel the entire strand

@@AP-kf3xs This makes a lot of sense. Plus the setting of the hair with the dryer immediately after trapping all that water in there might be negatively affecting the hair too and inadvertently causing hygral fatigue. I think it's an okay method on occasion when you want a specific look, but it's not particularly suited for longterm haircare, especially for long hair (vs short cuts)

Yes curly cuts are for shape but not for growing hair. Plus there are instances where they don't cut every strand and it leads to not getting all split ends. Also a lot of people say it look good the day of the cut but not always after. And most of the time hair is uneven and your not able to blow dry it straight if you want.

Yes the hair is bound to be a little of uneven because of the shape. However, I wonder there are more split ends than usual because of the technique. I will say my last two stylists were wayyyy more in depth with their curly cut technique where they went row by row of hair rather than grabbing chunks of hair like the first two stylists. I feel like that played a major role in how my hair looks and feels as well as how it grew out from those cuts.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I was really curious about hearing your take & what happened to these women. In the past, I stopped getting curly cuts because my hair doesn’t grow at the rate that they cut. I feel stylists chop it so drastically & getting it cut every 3-4 months (like suggested) is unrealistic if you want growth. I recently decided again to try to find curl stylists that listen to my hair needs. I DO enjoy the shape I get from curly cuts. I see a difference in the elasticity, but getting my hair consistently chopped to see no growth is scary lol. This video is inspiring me to document the process of curly cutting to see if I notice a difference in the overall health of my hair!

Just goes to show not everything is for everybody. What works for you may not work for me. I was never hooked on raw oils and butters but I used and still use leave ins and deep conditioners in rotation. Five years ago I got a curly cut and followed up last year with a second one. I clip my ends when twisted and have learned to blow dry and clip my ends from time to time. Even when I had a relaxer I didn’t clip my ends as much as people say you should. I did it when I felt it was needed. Saying this to say it’s up to us to assess the needs of our own hair. You can take advice from a stylist but if you don’t see them weekly or even monthly, it’s you who is taking care of your hair and you have to make adjustments if necessary. So sorry this happened to these ladies and I hope whatever tweaks are needed will be made for all involved.

I'm still watching through this, but I've been getting curly cuts for about 3 years now (every 3 months) and I have nearly no issues; however, I'll caveat this with a few things.
    1. My hair is somewhat long, it's about neck length in curly state. I reached this length about a year and a half ago. I'm not interested in growing my hair beyond this length
    2. I have coarse surface texture, dense, fine hair.
    3. My hair grows incredibly fast. When getting my curly cuts, I usually have somewhere close to an inch cut off and more in some areas (like the back). I usually tell my stylist to cut what you need to (in the case of split ends).
My stylist allows you to go 4 months between cuts, but in my experience, that's where I have issues with single strand knots and I usually grow a pretty bad mullet by that time, so I opt for 3 months and sometimes it's closer to 2.5/2.75 months just because my hair looks its best after the cut.

      Alright, I finished.
I need to watch the other videos you linked, so that's not going to be in this; however, I think your edit clip explains it pretty well.
The issue is, there isn't a set standard or measure in quality. This isn't necessarily the fault of BGC. They can provide the education and the fundamentals, but the way people apply and extrapolate is based on what they think is best. For example, consider college students. Student A studies diligently and makes straight A's. Student B parties sometimes but still makes A's and B's. Student C doesn't show up to class and does the bare minimum to get a C in all classes. All of these students pass and get their degree, but the difference in performance between Student A and Student C or Student B and Student C is going to be drastically different. That's likely what we're encountering here. Does this mean the university is at fault for Student C being allowed to pass? Maybe, but often schools leave the vetting to the employers (or to remove the analogy, we're left to vet our stylists by their work and how they treat us).
I'll watch the other videos to further inform my opinion, but this is exactly what I thought was going to happen from the premise in your video.
EDIT: I've now watched the other videos and they've unfortunately put a bad perspective on the situation for me. I feel bad for the individuals involved, but it feels like things are getting lost in the messaging.

Yes, this is my belief as well. There is no standard. However we were thought to believe there was a standard involved. That might be on me for assuming as a consumer but I would think if you had the CIK certification (which the directory longer exists on the website and level of ongoing education the stylist has achieved is no longer considered suffice according to them) you would be sufficient enough especially with how much some stylist are charging for these specialized cuts. I think regardless of what education they have you need to be vetting your stylist before they take shears to your head. There is no set standard. I hope they revaluate in the near future to get to the bottom of what is happening and how to prevent it so no one else has this experience.

Hey- I did a video on this too a little while ago as I have been having my hair cuts done on blown out hair for years then went to a curly hair stylist and made the complete wrong move. I found the cut to not target all of the split end and was VERY uneven in length. I have since been to another curly stylist who was better, but I still experienced the same issue with them not getting all of the ends trimmed and unevenness. I now currently get it done on blown out hair but again the shape when curly is not as good as it would be if i went to the second stylist i visited! So annoying!

I’m not sure what to believe. But I think I need to take the good with the bad. I know the products and washing weekly helped with my overall hair health…but I recently had my hair blown out and about 3 inches were cut off...should that be the case if I had a curly cut 4 months prior? 🤷🏾‍♀️ Maybe alternating like you mentioned can help.

I don't see why anyone would want to alternate back and forth between straight cut curly cut straight cut curly cut. Seems like this would be alot of stress to the hair. Then curly cuts have levels so then you blow that out then you see layers and like omgggg my hair is not even! Then you get that cut straight and have to cut lots off to even out the bottom layer with the top hair layers. It's all too much 😅😅 lolol. Maybe just good stick to getting it cut straight or getting cut curly. Cause jumping back and forth seems like overkill. But hey this is just another friendly perspective to look at.

Just a question….Do you think switching products every wash day can cause the issues? A lot of people on the internet review everything that comes out. I’ve found products that work for my hair, stick to them, get curly cuts every 3 -4 months, and don’t have any issues. Maybe it’s my hair because I also didn’t have growth or major split end issues when relaxed. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Any experimentation can increase the likelihood of damage. Content creation has definitely taken a toll on my hair at times so I wouldn’t say it’s out of the question. I don’t know for sure though. I think some people’s hair is more resilient than others.

    • @itstruedestiny
      @itstruedestiny  10 месяцев назад +1

I think a few people suggest getting the hair blown out for health cuts and going for curly cuts to achieve shape. It sounds like a lot of money to me so I wonder what’s the middle ground here that’s best for the hair and someone’s budget. I wonder how people will get their hair cut moving forward and what the right alternative should be in this situation.

Afrikan guy has a following just as the BCG/ CUT kinky ladies, all three are very different in their hair rules and delivery/communication. I watched videos from both forums and while there have been moments of Aeisha throwing shade she's never went out of her way to outwardly attack other stylists by name or did 2-3 hr videos bashing other ppl. The bcg practices/ trainings will work great for some & not for others for whatever reason. I just can't get on board with hate campaigns & purposely warring with others that aren't at war as well. The nastiness by some ppl regarding this entire thing is so sad to see, extreme toxic. It always has to be blck folks fighting amongst e.other, this time it's hair! Now lady i adore you so nothing that I've stated is about this video in particular.

Afrikan Hair God has definitely dedicated far too many lives in personal opinion to the issue and directly addressing other stylists. I have seen BCG do it as well but it isn’t as direct and played out in my opinion. At the end of day content should not be bashing other stylists or creators and that goes for both sides. I hope this video came across as my journey with curly cuts and not bashing anyone. 💕

I think ur video came across very open minded and fair. As I've commented before too you're consistent to a fault & your hair shows that. No you don't upload daily as some others do, you don't try tons of products (no hair junkie vibes) and the way you do your hair is the exact same process every single time using the same products on average. Only yourself & Flo A use the water/ product ratio correctly from what I've seen as well. I'd be shocked if your hair isn't healthy during your next cut, fingers crossed all goes well. ❤️❤️

Using products wrong, wrong products, not sticking to a main style, the list goes on and on. If someone doesn't mentally fully commit to the process then naturally the results will show just that. I don’t feel bad about Rosie and Shelly getting blocked. They ran online to say curly cutting as a whole was a problem and spread misinfo way before contacting BGC directly. I watched their initial videos and Rosie’s story especially didn’t add up. She refused to consider her stylist was the issue until way later. You don’t get to trash BGC, the people you make your content off of, and expect grace, especially when the issue was your stylist misrepresenting how good they actually are at cutting. BGC is not perfect but the block was perfectly warranted here.
