    For reference I got my curly cut Jan 19,2023 and I got my silk press April 13,2023. This video is to encourage ones to Ask questions when you go to do your trims. From my understanding yesterday during a live on Instagram when a curl friend asked her stylist about why her ends were like that after straightening her hair. First she said she doesn't encourage us blowing out their hair at home. She also mentioned that our ends should not be like that when straightened. The ends being like that means we need to go in for more regular trims. The stylist also mentioned that sometimes the client might not want to remove too much hair and they take that into consideration.
    I want to make it clear that I was never aware of the need to trim before the discussed time given by a stylist you are partnered with. So if you do get curly cuts discuss with your stylist a schedule or cutting of the of hair that will not only maintain length but the health during your schedule cuts. for reference I do cleanse my hair every 5- 7 days.

    Glad someone said it! I get a trim from a stylist that blows out. Then I will wash and style my hair and get a $20 curly cut from great clips or somewhere. These “natural hair” stylist that charge $250 for water and gel and a “dusting” is robbery

    I was getting curly cuts for about 1 year and began to develop terrible webbing, sometimes just weeks after the curly cut. I didn’t experience split ends but did find that my hair was extremely tough to manage. I switched to blow out cuts in Feb and no longer have issues with webbing and I’m retaining so much more length. I’m so glad you made this video, because I thought it was just me… Despite all the explanation from A&A of BGC (whom I LOVE), I struggled to grasp how curly cuts could both be a tool for shaping hair AND effective for length retention/ only cutting what needs to go. I’m fortunate to have a super talent CIK that can cut both ways and understands the pros and cons of each. I personally think the ideal solution for someone that rocks curls most of the time would be to get a blow trim First and then revert hair to get a curly cut for shape. That way you’re covered on both ends- depending on the stylist, this could be an expensive and time consuming option.

    • @rosieamelia5955
      @rosieamelia5955  Год назад +4

      The webbing was something I noticed as well that I didn’t have prior. I love that you have a stylist that can cut both ways. I have a few curl friends that mentioned that when they receive a curly cut the stylist first do it straight then revert the hair and do a wash and go and clean the shape up! Another stylist mentioned she cuts her clients hair curly this month then they next cut its straight to check and maintain the health of the hair!

      Same. I feel like with type 4 hair it doesn't really make a huge difference. With loose 2c-3b curls, I can kind of see why they might want to cut it in it's natural state, but with type 4, I never understood that. Like unless you're getting an actual haircut style like a tapered cut that is short in the back and long in the front/top, then it doesn't really matter for the shape of the hair whether you cut it curly or blown out. So you might as well cut it blown out since it's much easier to see. I think we should utilize technology as long as we do it in a healthy way. If there were no heat tools then we'd have to figure out a way to trim hair properly without it (which I think is totally possible... it's just those cut it kurly stylists do not do it properly) but since we have blowdryers that will help us see our strands better and give or more precise cut + heat protectant, it's just more efficient to get it cut that way.

    After seeing Shelly’s video, I went to my already scheduled curly cut appointment with me hair blown out. My CIK stylist cut my hair straight and I styled it once I got home. The shape was the best I ever had and I have zero tangles. My CIK stylist is aware of the internet backlash on curly cuts she made me feel comfortable by agreeing to do a straight cut every six months. And we will do a curly cut in between those cuts.

    • @rosieamelia5955
      @rosieamelia5955  Год назад +4

      That’s excellent, these videos are just to give people awareness so they don’t have similar experience like I did , Shelly and numerous others!
      I am happy you went to your CIK stylist and she accommodated your request! There is a CIK stylist at the start if the video sharing Shelly’s experience and she recommends that you cut the hair similar to what you have in plan for your upcoming cuts! I I wish stylists would not see this as backlash because honestly it’s not, and from me personally it’s not meant to be like that!
      I like many believed that our ends were maintained ,and for me personally I ended up with a situation I thought was taken care of with my routine trims!
      There are adjustments we all have to take into consideration with any routine and hopefully with the experiences of many we can adjust our routine to cause it to be successful!
      I want all my curly friends to have beautiful healthy hair!
      I continue my routine Cleanse, condition and style within 10 days ! I have made adjustments where I needed to!
      I have put leave in back as a base because I have an allergy to CM base gel! I also realized that I need to implement a deep conditioner at least 2 times a month!
      I am happy you were able to work with your stylist on a hair routine that will give you the best outcome for your hair! I hope if your aim is for length retention that you will gain that in the coming months ! But overall with this new adjustment you will definitely see overall health, less tangles etc! All the best 👌🏽!

      @@rosieamelia5955 I am blessed that I work with a stylist that listens to me and doesn’t get defensive when I raise issues. I think A&A need to work on that. I was on their live last week and realized that they exhibited an old school mentality where the clients need to adjust to how they operate versus catering to their client. It was a complete turn off. That attitude is the reason that many of us stopped going to stylists. Black stylists need to change that old school mentality. Black people have options these days and will take our money elsewhere.

    From a professional view point: If you got it cut 3 months ago, it was time for a trim + since curls shrink, your ends look like how they are supposed to look after 3 months while being stretched out. I actually didn’t think your ends looked bad Rosie! It was time for a cut for sure, regardless if it was on blown out hair or curly. But I didn’t see anything concerning through the lens of the video. Of course we all have the freedom to get our hair cut how we choose. But the accuracy of curly cutting is possible, when they have education in tight curl cutting. There is a lot of fear around this, people have been messaging after seeing this video asking if their hair is okay. I hope my explanation can calm some fear that people may have regarding straight or curly cutting and what is best choice for them ❤️

    • @rosieamelia5955
      @rosieamelia5955  Год назад +17

      I appreciate your professional input. I am not a professional, I can only speak on my hair and base of what the Stylist that has cared for my hair for 6 years observed. This video is by no means to scare individuals from getting curly cuts. The stylist that cared for my hair is trained and well knowledgeable and I don’t think she did anything wrong to my hair where that is concerned. She did an excellent shaping and she is an excellent stylist. For me personally I don’t like the ways my ends looked, it looked like I had not gotten a cut In one year. I am not the only curly friend who has experience ends looking like they have not been maintained with regular trims. Shelly.v.247 has experienced similar issues to what I have experienced, her hair was actually worse than my hair. I just don’t believe in doing a maintenance cut that subsequently caused me to lose 2 inches basically the hair I grew. This means I won’t retain length. Also if I would go with what Shelly’s stylist recommended which is basically every 2 months I definitely wouldn’t retain much length. So again I loved getting my curly cuts , my stylist was awesome but with the condition of my ends it’s not worth it for me personally. Everyone has the personal choice to choose how they want to care for their hair. I hope this community can respect that and maybe just look at the concerns of what the individual have made in the comment section. Ultimately at the end of the day I want healthy hair and I know you want that for your curly clients that you see in your salon.

      I have the same exact concerns with my hair as Rosie. I’ve faithfully gotten curly cuts every 3 months and after recently blowing out my hair I’m shocked at how awful my ends look.
      I noticed lots of tangling as the time has progressed and that’s even after a cut. Also, I’m not one who doesn’t allow the stylist to take what needs to be taken. AND…. I always ask for a report and on the health of my hair. Each time I’ve been told I got an A+. So how can my ends look like I haven’t trimmed them in over a year?
      My hair never looked this way when I wore it straight and got straight cuts. I was also able to retain way more length at a higher rate.
      I say all this to say, I’m not sure what the issue is. Maybe the issue is simply me and how I’ve been handling my hair.
      So I will take ownership of that notion right now until there’s enough time to find out and see.
      My next maintenance trim will be in 3 months and I can’t wait to see what my ends look like with utilizing the same hair care practices.
      Lastly and most importantly, I’m so happy we can have these open discussions where everyone can share their perspectives! I love this for us! 🙌🏽💖💯

      You know it’s really sad because sometimes when we have a concern others might make us feel like we are doing something wrong, we are using too many different products, we tried different styles, so it must be us that did something to cause damage to our hair. Sometimes that may be true that we did do too much but it should never be the cop out for the reason we are experiencing something!

    This video confirms what I thought for a long time! When I got my curly cut it looked beautiful but I agree they don’t get all the damaged ends off. I’ve always believed in trimming hair when straight.
    Also I’ve been having scalp irritation from UFD too! After watching you, Rabielle, and WhattheKink I ventured into Kinky Curly as a base and like it wayyy better than UFD. I also like that it actually dries and sets and doesn’t stay wet.

    I’ve never heard of zero degree cuts until yesterday, it’s a new term for me. But have seen many getting their hair trimmed on blown out or flat ironed hair. And their hair is growing on a regular basis with washngos. The length retention is amazing. I’m excited to see your new chapter in the journey and I completely trust what you say. We are all not blind and that’s why we film everything on camera. Pictures and videos don’t lie. Before trimming my hair weeks ago, I noticed some single strand knots in clumped sections when I pulled my hair out. Only when my hair was stretched or soaking wet, in a way that I could see the entire state of the ends, I realised what was going on. Clipping one strand away, doesn’t help, because you end up with a section of coil that looks thin. So you end up cutting the entire bundle of curl away, that isn’t affected. And now need to even out sections so everything doesn’t look crooked. Or your hair is left with holes. When the hair is coiled up, you don’t get to see it properly unless you pull the ends slightly out. So I can imagine when strands are splitting but are coiling up the way they do because we own micro curls & zigzags, it can be challenging to see what’s truly going on. Especially when the hair strands are clumping & coiling up beautifully. It could be hard to determine if that clump of curl has issues. So that’s maybe why that the blown out state is showing what’s been hiding inside all the clumped hair strands. Of course I’m not a professional, but just compare the challenges I see in my hair. Can’t wait to see your hair and your observations in a few months! ❤❤

    Love love love this video! It addresses many of the things I’ve been thinking and concerned about. I got my first curly haircut last May (2022) and I’ve had 2 more since then. I go every 3-4 months and recently blew my hair out and felt mortified at how my ends looked! I think I’m going to get a straight cut now as opposed to a curly cut especially since I’m due for one. Lastly, I truly believe I’ll have way better length retention with straight cuts verses curly because there’s more control over how much gets taken off when it’s cut straight. I’m excited to follow you over this next year and beyond. Thank you for helping me with my quest for beautiful healthy curly hair! 💖💯

      Hey I wasn't sure if your comment was referring to me . But if it was; to answer your question I don't frequent variation of products even though you may see a variation of videos doesn't mean I did that particular video in that month( for example my curls blueberry bliss video was done in 2022 OCT, Doux bee girl twist out 2022, knotless was also 2022) as I mentioned I don't use products like the doux often in my hair routine . I mostly use botanical products, most wash days start with using UFD curly magic and end with ICH, PS or BG. I may use a mousse or foam for my topper based on my desired results but that should not affect the health of my hair. my shampoo and conditioner stays the same. Any variation of shampoo I have used thus far since this year is on the BGC recommended list. I have not done anything but shampoo condition and styled my hair between 5 to 7 days. Yes the Stylist of 6 years did she was impressed with the condition of my hair during the shampoo and conditioning stages but then upon blow drying my hair she saw the condition of my ends.

    • @Barnes247
      @Barnes247 Год назад +2

      @@kngdomkd5933 Not sure if this was for Rosie or me but I believe as long as you’re properly caring for the hair (Cleanse, Condition & Style) routinely with regular trims the hair should not look like this. Especially with getting regular trims. I can understand there being some split ends after 3 months but my stylist said it looked like I hadn’t had a trim for a year or so. To me that’s problematic! My hair should reflect the meticulous amount of care I’ve poured into her, not the complete opposite!!! The only way to know though is to cut it blown out and track/ monitor what happens to the ends at each trim. Will they be better??? My guess is yes but only time will tell. 💖

    I have wanted to get a curly cut for such a long time. I even made two appointments and cancelled both of them for several reasons. One, they are so pricey and I would have to travel 2.5-3 hours to a stylist plus the appointment would be 2.5 hours. That means to get my hair done it would take 7.5 hours. Second after talking to stylists and researching curly cuts I was discouraged. Through my research and talking to the stylist that did my big chop, my daughter who is a licensed cosmologist, and my sisters stylist they have all stated that the best way to be sure to maintain healthy hair is to cut it in a blown out or stretched state. It seems like they knew what they were talking about 🤷🏽‍♀️. Needless to say I am glad I did not go through with my curly cut😪

    • @rosieamelia5955
      @rosieamelia5955  Год назад

      Yes unfortunately Curly Cuts doesn’t remove all splits ends and that in turn creates other issues!
      A few days ago a stylist following the method shared her hair and asked the question how long ago do you believe I got a cut? It was less than 30 days! Her hair looked beautiful set in a wash and go and you would not know the damage!
      Some women are not affected at all, but many are affected, our hair is damaged! I personally have never had damaged hair from washing it weekly!
      Something is wrong 😑!
      Will it ever get addressed! Probably not because I feel we are dismissed in our concerns! There is No compassion ( as women of color many have avoided stylists for this reason)!
      For years of being natural I have only had to cut my hair like this because I wanted to ! Now I have go cut over 5 inches in 6 months because of damages from BGC method under the care of a CIK stylist!
      As a creator we don’t get to hide and deal with the emotions of our hair getting damaged!
      It’s honestly a sad situation!

    Personally I do both. My stylist gives me a curly cut twice a year (every 6 months) and in between I cut it myself on blown out hair. I don't cut more than a half an inch so as to not change the shape of my hair and most times if my hair is in good condition and kept there I don't need to cut more than a 1/4 of an inch. I agree that a curly cut doesn't get all the frayed ends but I don't rely on my cuts with my stylist to remove them all I rely on them to maintain the shape and I only need to go twice a year. I do have the Revair though so it really helps me do my own cuts at home.

    Have you spoken to a stylist who does both curly and straight cutting? I'm curious to see what they say as many straight cut stylist say you can't "see" the ends when curly, but isn't that what curly cut stylists are trained for? To see the ends while curly

      My stylist that does my silk press does both cuts. So on the live yesterday the stylist was asked that very question! She responded , she said how she determines the split ends is by feeling! She stated that even if the hair is cut curly our ends should not look like that and that would mean we need more regular cuts! She also said some clients don’t like getting too much taken off and that could cause the ends to be like that. I am non of the above, I love sharp ends I am the girl who chooses health over length every time. I honestly didn’t even think about split ends, I just figured I am getting trims and I would be fine. As my Stylist of 6 years said that kind of cut isn’t working based on the condition of my ends because after 3 months. So I am just going to go back to her caring for my hair. Another well known stylist was asked this very question, someone messaged me in the Dm ! This was discussed on a live I wasn’t there unfortunately but they mentioned she had the same response that you cannot see what state the ends of your hair are in when curly. The stylist from the live I was on mentioned to have the conversation. Regardless of what cut we choose I hope we have that open line of communication with our stylist!

      Christiana the year 2021 (September) was the first I ventured into doing curly cut the first stylist butchered my hair, the owner had to do a corrective cut to fix my hair. Then not certain but after visiting that salon my hair never felt the same and I was getting tons of split ends after her cut 2021. The start of 2022 My stylist of 6 years fixed my hair and that’s the cuts that I started my RUclips channel with. It was never the goal to stop curly cuts, this was my routine yearly silk press and seeing the condition of my ends was devastating for all the work I put into caring for my hair.
      This video is to help ones to have an open conversation with your stylist whether you cut straight or curly. I honestly thought of quitting youtube instead of putting out this video in fear of the social media backlash and harassing comments. I felt I came on this platform and shared how amazing my curly cut experience was and I can’t deny I enjoyed everything about curly cuts but I also know that I must share all experiences even though it’s difficult! I am very grateful that I had an amazing curly friend that commended me for sharing this experience and told me not to quit 😁!

    ok.. so forgive me because I'm not so clear: what is difference between a silk press and a blown out state? and what is a "zero degree" cut when you're hair is in a stretched/straight state?
    I have medium density, spring-coiled, fine hair -- but was thinking about no longer doing ANYmore heat pressed trims because it takes so long to bounce back when i go back to wearing it curly.😭
    So i have the exact same problem in reverse. My (straight-hair) stylist is the absolute best whom I've been working with well for many years. And we both agree my hair thrives in it's curly state. I do routine curly cut trims for maintenance and have 1 annual straight-cuts. I have no interest in wearing my hair straight anymore ever, unless for an ultra special event!

      So silk press is a technique in how the hair is straightened, it’s blown out then set with a flat iron and the hair is left silky. A blow out just using the blow dryer then cut. 0 degrees cut is known by many stylists if you ask for it. It’s cutting the hair at one length and avoiding doing layers! Ask your stylist she will definitely be able to explain better ! I am not certain if based on hair length if everyone can do 0 degrees cut. I will ask because I have tons of friends who are licensee cosmetologists! Also I share a video in my earlier videos of me getting a basic blown out cut.

    You've given me a lot to think about! When I was relaxed, I got my hair trimmed every 6-7 weeks and my hair was all the way down my back. And yet I've been struggling to retain length in my 3 1/2 yrs of being natural. In that time, I've done a combo of trimming my own hair curly and most recently getting curly cuts by a CIK stylist since April 2022. I got my hair cut in a blown out state 1x in June 2022 but ended up with a baby crown ever since so my concern is how to account for different curl patterns when the hair is cut straight. Also, it just occurred to me...if I needed a trim every 6-8 weeks when my hair was relaxed, why would I suddenly be able to go 3 mos before getting a trim with my hair curly?? 🤦🏽‍♀️

    • @rosieamelia5955
      @rosieamelia5955  Год назад +4

      I know alot of people have that concern about a baby crown. If you make the choice to cut straight you have to have a stylist that is capable! Check out her instagram instagram.com/thetextureologist?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==, she cuts straight! Also I wear my hair curly so my stylist can see how my hair falls. Also from their recent live BGC, The Stylist said she does the same cut straight so they are capable to do it straight. Retaining length is not just about proper shampooing and conditioning but splits ends must be removed! If you are not experiencing split ends, bad tangles you should be fine. This video main goal is for ones not to have the same fate. I want us to ask questions and just do our own research! Another Curly friend suffered the same fate along with others who have shared pictures after blowing out their hair. Two of these very women had very long hair one to her waist and the other mid back, they were wondering why their hair wasn’t retaining length with 3 months trims. They had split ends all the way up the shaft. If they give permission I will share pics of how with frequent curly cuts their hair was compromised!

    • @rosieamelia5955
      @rosieamelia5955  Год назад

      Baby crowns, from my understanding can be caused from broken hair or from a cut that would include putting layers in the hair! A 0 degree cut is a basic cut from my understanding one of the simplest cuts that every stylist that has been in beauty school should know! Tight curl cutting is a specialized area that stylists have devoted their time to learning! If you already go to a tight curl specialist they should be able to execute this! I do know some tight curls specialists have different services of how you want your hair to set eg wash & go, updos, twist out etc!
      For a twist out you more than likely will receive a cut on blown out hair! So you can still go to her but get a non wash and go set that will likely allow her to do the cut on blown out hair! I hope this explanation was helpful!

    • @rosieamelia5955
      @rosieamelia5955  Год назад +1

      Tightcurlnaturalgyal If you are not experiencing increased tangles, Velcro like ends and webbing your hair should be fine! I do believe no doubt you will definitely experience more growth because with straight cuts the stylist and you will have a peace of mind that split ends are removed! It’s just a matter of preference of what you desire your end goal! If you are at the same length after getting routine trim for a year or two or if you only retained 1 or two inches from a possible 6 inches of growth something is wrong! If it’s not the cutting it’s the method we have adopted to care for our hair! If we have retained length in the past but now we are not something is extremely wrong with how we are caring for our hair!

    I think it is important to remember that the behaviour of our ends when its curly vs when straight will be different. If your hair is in good condition, retianing length and looks good to you i dont see why it matters if a fine tooth comb can or cannot get through it. If there are split ends there can be a plethora of reasons behind that. Its actually normal for older strands to split, theres no such thing as a head of hair with 0 splits. I especially thinks it normal to find women wearing their hair loose to have some ends that need to be trimmed after 3 months.
    Also, is this stylist a natural hair stylist or just a stylist who straightens natural hair? Im careful taking advice from stylists who dont actually work with LOOSE natural hair, their expectations or assumptions of what healthy hair looks like is usually not reality for the kinky haired girl.
    I mentioned it before on the community page but have you timed how often you find yourself needing a trim? 3 months after a cut sounds normal to me. Whether i was relaxed, a braided natural, or a loose natural around the middle of month 3 is when i needed a cut/trim. I think if you are retaining length i dont see a problem,but i understand wanting to experiment and i do think it takes a really thorough stylist to get all the haggard ends off when doing curly cuts its more than just maintaining a shape but also removing haggaed ends.
    Anyways, excited for the outcome, especially because straight cuts will be so much cheaper than a curly cut every 3 or 4 months, and if you can keep a cute shape that would be great. I would probably try it out after seeing your results just for the sake of saving money if anything 😂

      To answer your question, my stylist has never had a relaxer she has been natural her entire Life. She wears her hair natural as does her sister and they have beautiful healthy long hair. It’s really interesting though that it seems that only one particular form of stylist is knowledgeable in your opinion! It seems you are trying to infer that only Curly cut stylist are able to detect healthy hair. I have retained length but many have not who are getting frequent trims, the whole point of trims is to retain length! Hair grows I believe a half of an inch in a month if I remove 2 inches every 3 months. Do the math! Also everyone knows you are going to have split ends but you are not going to have tons of split end on the first wash after getting a maintenance cut one week later, subsequent that’s why I had such terrible ends at the 3 month mark.

    • @Barnes247
      @Barnes247 Год назад +2

      I started getting curly cuts last May (2022). Prior to that my hair was cut blown out and was super easy to detangle.
      Over the last year my hair has gotten increasingly hard to detangle and style due to the ends. Now mind you, I’ve gotten routine trims faithfully every 3 months. My hair also grows at a very decent rate and I’m shorter now than I was at the beginning of 2022. Yet, one of my major hair goals is growing my hair out.
      After seeing Rosie’s video I decided to have my hair blown out and my ends made me want to cry! How could it be that I’ve gotten routine trims and taken meticulous care of my hair and it look like I don’t take care of it at all???
      So I had all the damaged ends cut off and I’m starting fresh! I’ll be tracking and monitoring my hair too very closely. Continuing to get maintenance cuts done every 3 months on the dot!
      I can’t wait to see the outcome. I’m predicting it’s going to be a day and night difference moving forward! 💖🙏🏽
