I never thought I would say this, because I love James Brown, but I think that this version is better than that of the godfather himself. God, that big fat voice over that fat horn section! '60s soul doesn't get any better than this, except maybe Otis singing "Try a Little Tenderness". Thanks so much!
I was about to write the typical This Is Better comment, which is very close. Then I went back and watched James. Truth is a true lover of music couldn't place one over the other. And it's all love :)
BIG OTIS FOREVER. BIG.TUBE..C EST FORT OTIS HEEE J AVAIS..13ANS NOW 65 ANS HEEE ÇA ME TRAVERSE DE PART EN PART GOOD OTIS MON GRAND UNCLE LAURENT CELLERIER BIG MAN. LE PARRAIN EL LUGO
From his book James said he himself has almost new idea what it means, it just came to him, it pretty much means that he has something new to show the public, a new song, dance-move whatever you will, especially during James time, it was his way to stand up for black people and stick it to the "man"
Rita, lol I think the lyrics amount to praise of the music and dancing. The artist is saying he himself has a new concept ("bag"). :-) and he doing various dances: the jerk the fly . This version is so slammin! :-) of course the lyrics are open to interpretation regarding other new concepts ideas fashion statements musical grooves styles etc etc etc each one could be considered a new "bag" (of tricks if you will) Peace :-)
This is for @VedderState. He stated Otis was imitating James. I disagree. Otis had his own unique style of singing. He was one of a kind. You CAN'T compare the two. It's like trying to compare Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly. Both were fantastic. However, their styles of dancing were different.
And after being so used to the tightness of James Brown's band, this band is all over the place, not tight at all but it does sound good in it's own way.
this version might be not as tight as James Brown n his band but its a lot more soulful ! I really miss what Otis might have done if he lived a little longer!
You don't know this is James Brown's song from 1965? What Mr. Brown meant when he wrote this is this is a new style of music, the beginning of funk, never heard before.
@19CACTUS51 The Bar-Kays backed up Otis only briefly and that was on the road. They never recorded one song with Otis in his career. Not one. As for the Mar-key's horn section, they kept the name when the original band disbanded. Don was in the original band. They released albums under that name for the rest of the 60's. They changed their name to the Memphis Horns sometime in the early 70's. The core players were Andrew Love and Wayne Jackson. Wayne was in the original Mar-Key's.
@gmandofgod I just like Otis' singing better...I hear ya on the imitating, but I see Otis being incredibly respectful, well as they all were back in the day.
bikefixer Who edited this tune? The "good" folks at Apple 's Itunes or was it Amazon? In any case that's pretty f#c#ed up! There is NO excuse for tampering with one of the GREATEST musical albums of ALL TIME!
I love this song, but hell...I've got no idea what he is actually singing about? I read the lyrics but I doubt he's singing about his father buying a new bag...or is he? Is this some special black slang nobody but insiders can understand? Someone, please explain in to me! Goood, one of the funkiest songs of all times! :D Otis was some cool cat.
Uber Stuber , I've been loving you by Otis Redding is a gem. Not a dance song but a song that allows you to here the pure richness of his unique vocals
@19CACTUS51 What I said is absolutely true. It's what you are saying that I'm having trouble understanding. What or who is "Staname"? Also, Booker T and The MG's backed up Otis at Monterey. Watch the film. Duck, Steve Cropper and Al Jackson are clearly visible playing behind Otis. And I can say with certainty who played on what regarding Stax Records. I'm a superfan. My knowledge about about the company and the players is extensive. I could write a book on it.
Could have been the Stax house band--Andrew Love, Joe Arnold on tenor, can't remember the trumpet player--but if this gig was in LA maybe not. Love the horn section. Sometimes they sound a little flat, sometimes not really together, doesn't matter.
@littlenaitch2 They both are from the same state at least, however they were similar in soul power. James Brown was clearly the better dancer , I'm a fan of both of them so I'm not choosing sides .
This is an interesting performance. I'm not a fan of Otis' voice much, but I enjoy him here. And it completely annoyed me when he messes up the lyrics in a way that makes no sense "He's mash potatoes, the alligator jump back jack see you later alligator". I do love it when he sings "Papa's.....gotta.....brand new.....bag" when he draws it out. He should have done that 4 or 5 times.
Nobody could ever top James Brown. Well, just this once. Pure FUNK!
James can obviously be topped on this 1 song.
Otis 8 days per week
Otis is in a WHOLE league of his own though.
Mr Otis Redding is The King of Soul
Otis was the king of soul
This is how Brown wishes his version would have sounded. ;)
King of soul👍👍👍
Otis was something else. I would’ve love to party with him ♥️♥️
I never thought I would say this, because I love James Brown, but I think that this version is better than that of the godfather himself. God, that big fat voice over that fat horn section! '60s soul doesn't get any better than this, except maybe Otis singing "Try a Little Tenderness". Thanks so much!
21 years old feeling like I went back in time to the 60s busting a move at the whisky a go go when I hear this song.
James,I like you,but this version COOKS!!!!!
This is the definition of badass

Nice cover version, Otis was 🔥💣🎤🔊🎼💜
Otis redding 💪 the Monster of soul,👌❤️👏🏼
Wow I’m blown away by his version!
I like this version🙏❤👍
I was about to write the typical This Is Better comment, which is very close. Then I went back and watched James. Truth is a true lover of music couldn't place one over the other. And it's all love :)
Oh boy! I'm kneeling in front of Otis for this! I thought James couldn't be overthrown on this one! Listen to both version and you'll see!

Great groove by Otis !
I can say I'm the EPIC James Brown Fan..but Otis outdid him on this one..just this one song..just this one..Badazz.
I like this better than the original. Heresy!
this lets me know Otis love James Brown music too! Sing it Otis!
Legend...☝☝☝👍👍👍
Both Otis & James learned a lot from Little Richard...but they each made their own way and left us a wonderful legacy.
From his book James said he himself has almost new idea what it means, it just came to him, it pretty much means that he has something new to show the public, a new song, dance-move whatever you will, especially during James time, it was his way to stand up for black people and stick it to the "man"
Thanks
love the music
Otis and the Barkays just wow.
REAL MUSIC!!!!!!!!!
Did a dance performance to this . great version of the the song
Dat soul music! Oooo yeahh
Takes a lot to out-funk James Brown, but this version has a richer, juicier bass-line that I can't help moving to.
yes sir, hate to admit it but i like otis' verison better. But if anyone can do it, Otis Redding motherFersss!
indeed
yes...i got it!
David Lenkic, I totally agree and I'm a big James Brown fan
If you can't get down to this something's wrong wit cha!!!!!!!!! R.I.P. Otis!!!!!!!!!!!

And Otis takes it to Memphis and makes it his own.
And no, I'm not slaggin on JB. Otis and James had great respect for each other's talents.
Otis så jävla bra🎉🎉
@helo86 Otis's studio band were Booker T and The MG's. The horn section were the Mar-keys. They later called themselves The Memphis Horns.
a classic bad as you wanna be
Masterful
indimenticabile Otis Redding
Mr Groove lives!
Merci ottis redding
Mama got a brand bew bag too

This is Otis Redding Live at Whiskey a-Go-Go. This version of Otis Redding definitely better than the version of James Brown who also sang it
This is for @VedderState. He stated Otis was imitating James. I disagree. Otis had his own unique style of singing. He was one of a kind. You CAN'T compare the two. It's like trying to compare Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly. Both were fantastic. However, their styles of dancing were different.
this one is Otis.
Otis was a bad man
And after being so used to the tightness of James Brown's band, this band is all over the place, not tight at all but it does sound good in it's own way.
this version might be not as tight as James Brown n his band but its a lot more soulful
! I really miss what Otis might have done if he lived a little longer!

Lockin and Bboyin!
@helo86 Actually in the 60's, his band was known as the James Brown orchestra.
Best version I think …….Georgie Fame did it good too 👍😎
Egal wer das ist, in jedem Fall sehr gut wow.
Diese Jungs konnten das früher schon sehr gut.
gruß KH. Becker
Just bought this Whisky A-Go-Go mp-3 and they editied this tune to 2:30 minutes. I'm peeved because the full version smokes.
bikefixer Who edited this tune? The "good" folks at Apple 's Itunes or was it Amazon? In any case that's pretty f#c#ed up! There is NO excuse for tampering with one of the GREATEST musical albums of ALL TIME!
JAMES bROWN the coat
where can i get the complete recording of this?
I love this song, but hell...I've got no idea what he is actually singing about? I read the lyrics but I doubt he's singing about his father buying a new bag...or is he? Is this some special black slang nobody but insiders can understand? Someone, please explain in to me! Goood, one of the funkiest songs of all times! :D Otis was some cool cat.
Otis could do it all. James had The JB's, but Otis had the Markays!
I never really rated Otis until I heard this.
БЛАГОДАРЯ ВИ
Bass player is in a James Jamerson pocket.
@lonlywolfish One of the kings? Even Otis bows to him. JB is THE KING.
James Brown sung it also?? James Brown wrote it and won a grammy for it in 1965.
@lenluvpat It was James.
This aint just funky. Its musky!!!
@gmandofgod I like Otis's version better so maybe that is how it was meant.
the only song i know from this guy.haha

His voice is away better than james brown! still james is one the kings !
Réveillée les morts
@VedderState Otis is immitating James on this song, and his band is immitating the James Brown orchestra, so how can you like it better?
trying to find the names of the backing band.
Could have been the Stax house band--Andrew Love, Joe Arnold on tenor, can't remember the trumpet player--but if this gig was in LA maybe not. Love the horn section. Sometimes they sound a little flat, sometimes not really together, doesn't matter.

JB won. The song is just that good tho.
I dont understand yall. James Browns Version got way more Swing and Funk
@littlenaitch2 What are you talking about ? do u compare otis's voice to james brown's voice? u need to do a check up !
@lonlywolfish don't worry I got this one.
Sorry Otis, but NO ONE can cover James Brown...NOBODY!!! James put himself into his songs....stamped as JAMES BROWN...PERIOD!!!
well that ok
15 people ain't got no soul.
...this is by James Brown, not Otis Redding this is a live cover
jonmur77 WRONG!
This is an interesting performance. I'm not a fan of Otis' voice much, but I enjoy him here. Real good, not James.
Otis was a lousy dancer..but he was still the best!
James Brown is the King He wouldn't sing this Plus he used james brown 's band
I think you better know your music. James Brown did sing this song. Thanks for coming by.
