I've been watching all your videos for a while. You were at the top of your game making this one, my friend. I definitely laughed out loud. Thanks so much for sharing these with all of us!
This was top 3 favorite NES games for me when I was 10 years old. I remember having to grab a notepad to write down the paths and where to go next. I had never done that before with my more simplistic games and it really opened me up to a whole new genre. Love to see it covered here!
My dad randomly gave me this one day when I was home from school very sick. I think he was saving it for a birthday or something, and he felt bad for me. I played it for quite a while, but since I didn't have the patience to write down notes or make a map, I just wound up going back and forth and doing circles trying and failing to find my way through the plot. It wasn't until a lot of years later that I got online and found a guide to tell me where to go and finally beat it. I dunno, I'd probably like it more if I'd done that from the start, but now I always remember it as that game where I got lost running back and forth across the maps in a feverish haze, and I can't shake that.
I gotta say it looks like there is a hand holding the blaster on the cover. And no reference to Clue with a character named Professor Plum? LOL, I was expecting a screen shot of Christopher Lloyd as Prof Plum when you said the name. I've had this game for a few years but never really dove into it too much. Think I'll have to break it out and give it a real playthrough.
When this game came out my friend got it and got hooked so I had to get my own and loved that game I spent so many hours playing that game before school and after school and stay up all weekend it was a great game I remember spending lots of time getting gold in the mountain going back and forth picking up the gold bricks.
A+ video, I appreciated the amount of sass and laughed a lot. This is like what my memory of watching AVGN videos in the late 2000s was. That's a good thing (what I was trying to imply). Makes me want to try this game. Also it looks like I can see some fingers holding a gun on the box art. Maybe? That also might be my imagination
I'm always really happy that I managed to snag this one at a good price a few years ago. It's got so much style, pinache and charm it feels like something that would be based on an 80s manga or Saturday morning cartoon! Always hoping this one pops up on NSO sometime, though my secret dream is it getting a remake along the lines of Wonder Boy Dragon's Trap xD
😂😂😂 one of your funnier videos! I played this for the first time a few years ago, I shocked a friend when I flew thru to the end, having no idea it wasn't linear, sadly my best game play thru...til we realized you were supposed to get stuff along the way...woops. Still a lot of fun, gotta get back to it someday!
I think that the thing with the shop might be the 'force' thing in the status screen when you pause..... Apparently, there's a thing where the food that you eat in the game goes into some kind of a stat number, and they tie that to the shop to further gate progression a little I think? Also effects how reliably you can count on being able to start certain boss encounters? I just remember there being something obtuse and unwritten about progression in the game and I think maybe the weird obliqueness of the shop could be tied to that.
You are so cruel! I fell for the Mt Rainier lie you told and got excited (I'm from WA lol). 😂😂😂 Great review as always! I played this one a bit a few years ago but I was drinking and got terribly lost but it was a good time!
One cool and easy to activate essteregg is the shop keeper. The shopkeeper is modeled after one of the designers whos wife gave birth to a girl! After going to the shop an unknown number of times its announced hes got a new baby! Thats just awesome!😂
I'm not sure who currently owns the IP for this one, but I always thought it'd be really cool if it got a modern remake from the same team that actually did the Scott Pilgrim game. Give it that art style and soundtrack team and I think that'd be pretty rad.
Hell Yeah👊👊 I love this Game👊👊 this game is The Spear Of Destiny to the Nintendo. ps: without this game There be No Scott Pilgrim... thats why I love the Movie As soon they Mention "CLASH at DEMONHEAD"🤘🤘
Now this is a game where you can get lost and don't know what to do next. But we just played them until we figured it out dagnabbit. That's what we did back then. Now these young whippersnappers have that,.....what cha ma call it...internet thing and can just look up the answers...boy oh boy.
Disclaimer: I translate by my own hand the following information from the Japanese Wikipedia entry for this game. While I am an advanced student of the language, I am by no means a professional translator. This game is known in Japan as『電撃ビッグバン!』(でんげきビッグバン) [Dengeki Big Bang!], or roughly translated as "Electric Shock/Blitz Attack Big Bang!" I guess that explains the main character's name, though a number of other names were changed! According to Wikipedia, the Doomsday bomb was originally called the「デッドエンド」 "Dead End" bomb (Fun fact: in the Famicom game manual I found it was misspelled as「デットエンド」"Debt end" bomb?) Dr. Plum was kidnapped by the evil organization「ローブレイカー」 (Rob Raker? Low Breaker? Rob Laker? Ro Blaker? -feeling very stupid if this is a reference I am botching up -Oh, it's probably "Law Breaker"!) Commander Winestuff was originally known as 「ハッスルワイン」(Hassel Wine? Hustle Wine?) MINOR SPOILERS The adventurer's name is「ぴーたん」([Piitan], named after a Chinese delicacy also called "century egg" or "millenium egg") The fairy's name is 「フェイシァ」 ([Feisha], though I guess the English manual Romanizes this as "Faysha") The hermit is known as 「仙人」(せんにん [Senin], which translates to "mountain man" or possibly "immortal mountain wizard") And the evil organization「ローブレイカー」is headed by none other than the nefarious mastermind,「ジーザス」 (Jesus)
hey man, not to nitpick, but on the cover its just wonky perspective. bang doesn't have a gun arm, his gun is just way larger in frame than his fingers thanks to the angle. neat review!
Ah yes, I remember when the Razor Tigers did all that stuff in 1997. Right after the macarena hit. Crazy times. How do you not spend more time covering box arts, lol? Man, there is a whole cottage industry we're missing out on where MODERN DEVS make the games those cover arts depict that had NOTHING TO DO with what they were actually selling. I mean, that is amazing. I want to play, uh, "future ninja skeleton-shooting Chrome Rambo with cute girlfriend in a short skirt: The Adventure!" 😄
As an American, I believe it is. But for what it's worth, I also generally wouldn't recommend asking someone from Appalachia how to pronounce something. 😅
I just listened to the hammered amigo podcast. Trav I login through my google account, I used to just be Jason and now it renamed me to fp7vi against my will. Free me from this prison. Also, do your podcasts have a community anywhere, do you guys have a discord? I've listened to you for years bud
I appreciated your tone of voice with "'Metroidvania'...if you prefer" because no, I don't, and do not ever, prefer that term. I don't even understand it. Metroid does something. Why does Castlevania get a nod for all time for doing something similar (but much worse) a year later?
I don't think anyone prefers "metroidvania". Its weird and uncomfortable when people act like Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night are the wellspring from which all exploration based games sprung and that every title with similar elements must be cribbing. Even more so when they do it just so they can play up how highly they regard the above two games.
I really enjoyed this one when I played it. I especially loved accidentally shooting friend characters in the game and them just saying "no".
Hey, it's goriya. Hi y'all. Good to see the community together
@@havokchaos6882 Mr. NESFriend is good people.
I don't know why I cracked up at, "That's actually Mt. Rainier. Nah that's not true." lol

I love you unconditionally.

I like how Bang visibly grimaces when you smash his head into the ceiling when you jump.
One of my favorite things as a kid was swapping out his different suits and seeing the different expressions he made when you did exactly that.
A truly overlooked NES gem! So many game ideas in one game!
One of my favorite titles for the NES. Enjoyed it a ton as a kid and still love it to this day.
Me too it one of my NES favs for sure and spent so many hours playing it I was 11 years old when this game came out and was hooked
5:00 that’s called true immersion

One of my favorite games on the NES, Tom Guycott!
How have I not heard of this. I'm 42 and had a new when was 5 back in 86. I love oddball games and I missed this. Got to have it now
Clearly the shopkeeper was inspired by Costco. 4:18

Remember when The Clash at Demonhead and Sex Bobomb played at the Battle of the Bands?
I remember seeing it for the first time in Nintendo Power. Couldn't remember the name of the game until after I saw Scott Pilgrim.
I thought this was pretty good at the time. I've wondered how it would hold up now, but it was memorable enough.

I should take more time on the covers and might from now on! And SABER TIGER. Although, Razor Tiger does sound way more cool. You're right.
I feel they missed a huge opportunity here by not giving Bang a sidekick named Olufsen.

It really is Symphony of the Night onwards that followed that formula. Castlevania 2 was just a one-off basically. Yeah I don't like the term either.
Absolutely; I was just trying to give the back half of the term every benefit of the doubt. Glad I'm not the only one, in any case.
