I like this NES port of the Midway arcade game, though I recognize I'm in the vocal minority. You will wanna explore though, as staying in one room won't get you points. The alien critters stop doing drops in a room after you've eliminated a few, so keep moving if you wanna get the max score and "beat" the game. Even more fun with a buddy, much like another Midway arcade to NES port, Rampage. I enjoyed your video.
Oh friend...this one was rough. I played the holy crap out of it on Atari, and because of that my parents got me it on NES...I'd blocked it out until this video. Now, the memories haunt me.
I really like the visuals of the arcade game, and it sucks that the NES version looks so much worse. The game really does look like you'd spend a quarter and get all the gameplay you want out of it, but at least the arcade version's got some style.
I remember getting this game as a kid and being so excited since it was one of my favorite arcade games at the time, and then the utter disappoint of how mediocre it was.
My sister and I loved this game. We even have a picture of us playing it together. The nickname we gave this game was "Magic Basketball" because of the orb you had to collect to leave the level.
This lost a lot of important things from the arcade version. The joystick was shaped like a pistol grip and the fire button was an actual trigger. There were two buttons on the back of the controller you pressed with your thumbs. They performed contextual actions based on where you were standing in each room. Each level had a time limit for you to clear as many enemies. Playing with 3 players was fun because Gauntlet convinced us to drop a week's lunch money into a game every Friday. They could have done a much better job with this but they instead chose to phone it in.
This has been in my collection for years, and I’ve yet to try it. I think, after watching this, it’ll be a few more years before I actually boot it up:). Great vid!
Wow this looks like a not-very-great port. Could this be worse than the 7800 one? My favorite version by far is on Lynx, where there are a lot of neat level gimmicks and some actual scenic variety.
Yeah...this is definitely F tier. What's sad is this was actually made by Sunsoft. It looks and feels nothing like their games though. There isn't even a Famicom version of this game as far as I know. It's like they said "Nah, we're not putting this trash on our system, give it to the Americans." I know they tried but the NES was just too limited to port the arcade game.
It's crazy that this is a Sunsoft game when you look at something like Batman and realize it is also a Sunsoft game, but like... Really, really good and really, really, good looking.
Oof, I wasn't able to pay attention to both screens at the same time, so I focussed on the lower one for the duration of the video. Did I miss anything on the other screen?
I liked this one as a kid, and always wanted a modern update with stuff to do actually do. Something like Alien 3 on the SNES was, but with smaller easier to knock out levels.
My father once sat me down and told me, "Son, all any of us can do is keep rootin', tootin', and shootin' until we die." I've spent my life trying to prove him wrong and find a better path, so I think that means I have to avoid this game.
I really wanted to like this game because, for some reason, I loved the arcade version. This game in the NES is terrible. I hear there is also an Atari 2600 version has to be awful…
Ohh... Dr. Zorderz, doctors orders. I get it
Holy shit
I bet you're good at solving puzzles. Or I'm dumb and didn't get that pun, haha
@@bigstupidgrin nah, I've just got an eye/ear for lame puns

Yea, an old gf and I would smoke up and play this regularly. We had good fun with this, though it's far from great.
Love the PSA!

LOVED this in the arcade! Especially if you had all three players going. So disappointed with the NES version.
It’s in the name XeNOphobia

Wow. I thought you had to work your way through the base to find all the aliens, even on the 2600? Perhaps not.

2:26 “And you’ll get bored.” lol nice.

Lol that's great, I love it
Amazing video as always
Having some Pizza Hut foyer flashbacks after seeing this one. Sad to see that it translated to the NES this way.
Used to swap NES games with neighbor kids. After 15 minutes with this game, I was looking forward to giving it back.
¡Happy Wednesday Everybody!
I loved this in the arcade but this version made for a very disappointing weekend rental for me.
Great summary of a lackluster game.
This was a weekend rental for me and ny bro... how dissapointing that was.

I loved this NES port when I was a kid. Looking back, I have no idea why, other than liking how weird the enemies were.
Wow this looks like a not-very-great port. Could this be worse than the 7800 one? My favorite version by far is on Lynx, where there are a lot of neat level gimmicks and some actual scenic variety.
I used to play this in the skating rink back in 88. Didn’t like the NES version. I actually don’t think I liked the arcade version.

This is a game I see everywhere and I've always been curious. Now I know to say no to Xenophobe!
Don't make me get Xenophone.
I thought it was Doctor 2ordia2 when I was a kid and would pronounce it as such.
yes
More like Mid-ophobia
The redditor fears the xenophobe.

They had to be a duck or a pirate cuz they couldn't use a woman and make it too much like an Alien knock off 😂
There’s one on the title screen, who doesn’t appear otherwise. It seems they just couldn’t make up their minds in general with this game, haha.
Yes! A new day, a new NES dud to play and review. Even for its period this is such a poor game.
I really wanted to like this game because, for some reason, I loved the arcade version. This game in the NES is terrible. I hear there is also an Atari 2600 version has to be awful…
I'm up for a night of some good xenophobia 😂
a bad game from sunsoft on the nes 😢
If you squint a turn your head sideways, you can see the roots of Doom?
Nope. Don't insult one of the greatest games of all time like that.
Great title but worse
