    If you close your eyes and listen closely you can still hear Mary’s voice during this great performance of outstanding folk singers !! They said that Mary loved this song !! What a celebration of life !! Rest in eternal peace Mary 🙏🏼🙏🏼

    I don't know why I keep coming back to watch this video, because I cry EVERY time. I know it's a celebration of a simply marvelous performer's life, but I still cry. I guess it's because I feel sorry for myself that this wonderful singer is no longer with us. I was lucky enough to see PP&M in concert a few years ago and Mary's voice, even at her then advanced age, was still as clear as a bell. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to see these three in my lifetime. RIP dear Mary.

    So many thought provoking comments here. I was born in 1972 and grew up on this music. So sad to hear of Mary’s passing. Excellent group, excellent people, excellent music! Jesus is the Prince of peace. If His Spirit dwells in you then you will be an ambassador of heaven, the only Kingdom that brings true peace on earth, no matter what country, or government you dwell under. The Spirit of love and truth abiding in the soul of an individual is the essential key. Thank you for sharing this. ❤️🥰🤗

    Peter, Paul and Mary were my introduction to folk music in the summer of 1964, and are first loves for me, especially Mary. While working hard through three full recessions to raise a family, and paying more attention to classical and choral music, I lost touch with so many great artists of the early '60's. Besides the beauty of the music, there was a social consciousness in folk music of that time that placed the emphasis and the responsibility for responding to the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves squarely where it belongs - on us, on the individual. That is the sentiment that asks us to maintain in whatever flawed way we can, a love of liberty, and respect of all mankind, so that we may hopefully inspire those still in chains to break their yokes, and the oppressor to free the oppressed under his fist. Which brings me to the question, where HAVE all the flowers gone?........Where is our concern for the content of character, and the virtue of the soul seeking truth and beauty, and to sow love in this increasingly violent world? We need to remember that so much of this beautiful legacy, while often lamenting human frailty, also inspires us to work to serve one another in love. Something we've forgotten in our belief that perfecting the human condition is someone else's responsibility - or government's. While we have them, let's revisit the music of Peter & Paul, the Seekers, and other performers of that time who are still with us, and see if we can regain a little of the civilization that has been lost to us since those years. Thank you Mary, (and Peter and Paul,) God bless and keep you, 'til we meet again.

    I was at a PP and M concert in the 60’s. I waited outside afterwards in hopes of seeing them and to my surprise, Mary came out. I ran to her and. begged for her autograph. She declined saying she had a bad cold and just wanted to get to her hotel and rest. I didn’t protest but she must have seen how disappointed I was. She bent down and kissed my cheek. I was so excited. For an impressionable 13 year old, it was an experience I treasure and will never forget.

    I sat in a beaten up old station wagon with Mary as she tuned the radio to a station that was scheduled to play their recording of Blowing in the Wind. I was maybe 15. She was maybe 22. When it came on she started rocking and swaying. Afterwards they all came to my home and Peter sang my sister to sleep with a song he had just written the week before. Puff the Magic Dragon. I treasure that day.

    What a wonderful tribute to a truly wonderful life. It is great to see such a great celebration of her wonderful life. Much has been written about Mary's "battle with cancer." In her case especially, the "battle" metaphor strikes a dissonate note for one who did so much for peace in her lifetime. I prefer to think she endured her ordeal with cancer showing the same grace and spirit she showed throughout her life. As with war, cancer has no winners or losers.

    The funny thing is that when PP&M first started, they discouraged the audience from singing along. When they finally saw that it was no good to try & stop them, they just started telling people to jump in & sing with them. To me, this gave PP&M such a human side to their music. How in the world can you ignore THOUSANDS of voices all singing the same songs & not a bit of trouble started by anyone during those concerts! We all were having too much fun singing!

    Wonderful rendition of America's "2nd National Anthem" (at least in my book)!!! Not even realizing it, until my teens or early twenties, I grew up on their music. Though my parents grew up in the 50s and 60s, I didn't know who Peter, Paul & Mary were, until much later in life, though being born in 1979, I had always lietened to their music. I saw a PBS special on tv and was like who are Peter, Paul & Mary. Once they sang Puff the Magic Dragon, I was like, I grew up with them. Of course, I thought they wrote Puff. Lol. (Due to physical and developmental disabilities, I'm a bit naive.) I figured it out several years later, when I found another version of the song, by the original folk artists of the song. :-)

    • @gymnastix
      @gymnastix 9 лет назад +1

      "Puff, the Magic Dragon" (although the original Warner Brothers single is titled simply "Puff") IS an original Peter, Paul & Mary composition, sort of.
      The lyrics of the song were adapted from an Ogden Nash poem (titled "Custard the Dragon") by a Cornell University roommate of Peter Yarrow's named Leonard Lipton, the melody composed by Yarrow. To this day Lipton receives shared royalties (with Yarrow) for the tune. In fact, Yarrow went out of his way to find Lipton (with whom he had then been long out of touch) when he decided to record the tune with Peter, Paul & Mary. Of course, Lipton could have retroactively sued Yarrow had he failed to credit him (Lipton) with the lyrics of "Puff." But it appears Yarrow was genuinely motivated by honesty in having made that loyal gesture to an old friend.
      One may also wonder if a credit was ever given (by Lipton and/or Yarrow) to poet Nash, still alive at the time "Puff" was recorded and released, for the inspiration of the song's lyrics.
      That other version of "Puff" you stated you heard was simply a cover (another person's rendition) of the Peter, Paul & Mary original.
      I am sure many other musical artists have covered "Puff," live and in recordings. But an original artist(s) of a song only usually receives royalties from her/his/their original composition when the song is broadcast or recorded, not generally from performances at live venues, which would be more difficult to monitor. I mean, any group or singer in East Westville or North Southport could cover the song of another in a Friday night gig at a small nightclub and the publisher of the tune would never know about such a performance unless, perhaps coincidentally, the covered performance was reviewed by broadcast or print media and the publisher heard or read about such. From such simple live covers, the payment to the song's composer(s) is usually considered the flattery of having covered the tune in and of itself. Covering tunes of others is rather standard practice in popular and folk music.
      In fact, many musicians and singers make a practice of covering tunes composed by others. As Pete Seeger once said (and even he probably didn't say so originally), "Plagiarism is basic to all culture."The tradition of "handing down" and often slightly modifying the lyrics and melodies of older tunes is so common in the genres of blues and folk music there are many tunes for which the authorship is listed as "unknown" or "traditional." One such song is "House of the Rising Sun," performed for decades by blues and folk musicians but majorly popularized by the Newcastle, England rock group The Animals in 1964.

    Track six of side one on the album was the trio's covered version of "This Land Is Your Land"...

    Really great. It's wonderful to see Theodore Bikel there...he was at the forefront of so much and even had the courage to challenge some of Israel's worst policies toward the end of his life...

    Bikel ( Captain Von Trapp) is coming to Toronto on August 21st at Beth Emeth synagogue! It's Ashkenaz Foundation's greatest Yiddish concert of the year. See you there!
