  • Today, May 3 2009, is Pete Seeger's 90th birthday. I can't make the big concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate it, so this is my small tribute to him, an amazing man with an amazing wife, and an amazing life. This was performed at the "We Are One" Presidential Inaugural Concert, January 19, 2009.
The song was written by Woodie Guthrie in 1940, first recorded by him in 1944 at Folkway Records, but not released until 1951.
    RIP Pete Seeger May 3, 1919 -- January 27, 2014, Toshi Seeger July 1, 1922 -- July 9, 2013
Discussion, pro and anti Seeger, this song, government, whatever, etc is allowed. However, exceedingly vulgar or hateful comments, and obvious trolling with no reasonable intellectual value, will be deleted.

    I. Met Pete Seeger When I was a little girl. He came to my school. And I had met him at the door and I let in. He had come to talk to the kids about littering. He sang, and even got me to sing. I was six years old , and he told me that he believed that one voice singing out could change the world. I never forgot him. He was a voice that certainly did change the world! A wonderful man! An inspiration!

I love how Pete slipped in the radical verses that get left out of most versions of the song. This is a great American song not because it sings the praises of the country and the people, but because in its full version it has the guts to call a spade a spade and tell us we're not all the way there yet.

When my daughter was in first grade, her school played a "patriotic tune" every morning over the PA system. I introduced her to this song, asked her if they ever played it, and discussed the backstory. She approached the Principal and asked to have it added to the "patriotic list" Unwittingly the Principal agreed. In 2018, as a college student, she was leading a "social advocacy DACA support" event on the streets of NYC, handed out words to the song and led members of a whole new generation in singing this with enthusiasm. Plant the seeds early and often!

Jackie Alper, who sang with Pete and the Weavers, had a a show on WRPI and suggested I go talk to him. He was in a park in Albany where he had sailed with his sloop the Clearwater, and was giving a public demonstration on how to bend wood using a steam box to build your own boat. For all his fame, he was a very non-pretentious guy. It's time for everyone to stand up for change, before it's too late. RUclips and Facebook are part of the problem. They spread the lies and hate that brought Trump to power. There are people spreading lies, false conspiracy theories, Vaccine denying, covid-19 denying, climate change denying, mask denying and more. Some of them are paid trolls who sit in office buildings or warehouses in front of computers along with hundreds more around them, spreading lies on our social media!
There are Senators and Congressmembers investigating Facebook, Twitter, and RUclips spreading hate and missinformation. There is an advertizer boycott with over 1,000 companies and growing. The boycott includes Ford, Honda, Volkswagen, Microsoft, Verizon, Adias, Unilever, Starbucks, Levi Strauss, Coke, Pepsi, Hershey, Clorox, Rebox. The 1,000 companies (and growing by the day) have joined the Stop Hate For Profit movement started by the Anti Defamation League, NAACP and other

More like there are those who struggle for a lifetime, those are the insignificant ones. The ones who as soon as they start breaking down are thrown out and replaced receiving no gratitude for their work. The ones most alienated by our system. Collectively indispensable for the system, but individually worth nothing. Together we have the force to completely shut down the system. The rich business owners would have nothing if it weren't for the work we've done for them. But in return we get only a fraction of the worth we create.
When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run,
      There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun;
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one,
But the union makes us strong.
      Solidarity forever, comrade!

Woody Guthrie also wrote some cogent lyrics, later set to music, called "Old Man Trump", about Roy Trump's racist color-line policies (and an unrecorded verse to 'I Ain't Got No Home In This World Anymore' also refers to Old Man Trump in similar terms).
When Obama was elected, we got wonderful events like the one in this video, and far too many of us became complacent. As Brecht wrote at the end of 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui' (a dark-comic parable about the rise of Hitler), “Don’t yet rejoice in his defeat, you men! / Although the world stood up and stopped the bastard / The bitch that bore him is in heat again.”

Pete Seeger's anti-war performances from those years are revolting. He and his musical colleagues sang anti-war songs in 1939-41 because, in the Soviet Union, Stalin had decided that an alliance with the Nazis was a good idea; and the order to support Stalin had gone out to every Communist Party in the world; and Pete Seeger was, in those days, a good Communist.

Would Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen and Barak Obama ever believe that I am sitting in Limekilns in Scotland, overlooking the beautiful River Forth, on a beautiful summers night, still listening to the best ever version of this iconic masterpiece. Love it!

@Greg Normal Good evening, born in Glasgow, Scotland, of Irish parents, currently living in Dunfermline which is about 30mins from Edinburgh.
I've just watched President Biden's speech to the Irish Parliament, very impressive indeed! 👏

@Greg Normal Hi, I wouldn't have a clue how to "chat off"..... I'm pretty useless when it comes to IT. 😥

I’m not American, but I watch a lot of American and global politics. To say things in my home country, the Netherlands, are a mess, would be an understatement. The same goes for the world as a whole. Not only the pandemic, but also climate change, inequality, homophobia, racism and poverty.
Over the past two years, I’ve watched this video over and over and it has given me many different emotions. I have felt melancholic and sad about the state of the world, knowing what it was and could be. But it has also made me hopeful and determined. We, whether it’s the Netherlands, Europe or the US, can achieve incredible things when we work together. At times, I feel desperate and hopeless, but I can’t and won’t give up on humanity. What goes around comes around, we’re all in this together. It’s my strongest, deepest belief and I’ll always fight for that.

Peter Seeger looks so happy singing for a president at almost 90 years old! Thanks for the memory!

We were on weekend break from summer camp at Fort Drum and we drove to Montreal. Walking the Blvd. downtown to my surprise Pete Seeger was performing and I was able to get seats.
The legendary icon brought the house down with his performance and audience participation. That was back in the 60's and remembered like it was yesterday.

Pete saw some changes in his life but he knew there was a long way to go, in fact as each day passes the right puts up more obstacles that need tearing down, it was an ongoing effort that will never end.

Is this the best song every written or what? This rendition of "This Land Is Your Land" with the choir is amazing! 😀 😀 😀

Listening to this rendition reminded me of how hopeful we were when Obama was elected... Seeger changed the lyrics for this inauguration the lyrics changed are
“on a sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple, by the relief office, I saw my people. As they stood hungry I stood there wondering, “IF THIS LAND WAS MADE FOR YOU AND ME ? “
The last verse criticizes the wealth disparity and inequality. He changed It I guess he felt triumphant when Obama won but 12 years later we are in a worse condition than we were before. Remember never stop protesting!
