- Compilation of 6+ visits over the past two-ish years. Footage at the Lordstown facility and McDonald, Ohio, locations. Things haven't really changed at Mcdonald in years but Lordstown is extremely active as of late. Drone is a DJI Mavic Air 2 and Air 2s later. Video shot by me, I know some of the footage is low in the air but don't get your own screws come loose in commets over that..
Drones don't have audio so the music is my only option, if you don't like it there is a nice big mute button next to the pause button.

I don't know why, but I couldn't help feeling that this was like an elephants graveyard. There's something almost tragic about it. I also found it somewhat bizarre to leave stacks of cabs lined up like trophies, after the rest of the locomotives have been cut up.
If I ever win the lottery, I now know where to pick out a loco for my back yard 😉
I think I would pick out one of the s3 or that Burlington e8
If you do please please post it here
Im going for that Marc E8@@flakyandstayinfrosty
I would take the Conrail switcher.
An E or an F-45...hard to beat the sound of the 20-645-E3
It's a shame seeing these rail giants like this, a lot of miles traveled and a lot of memories! I would definitely love to see those E units saved
Same goes Santa Fe SDF45-2s
each one of those trains had workers that shared memories with each other. each train traveled miles upon miles across the country and have hauled all kinds of freight.
they might be machines but they are much more to the ones who operated them.
My goodness, that opening shot of the BN E-units and what looked like Wisconsin Central F45's just broke my heart. I wish I could go there, scoop them up, and give them a good home where they would be loved and appreciated, by me. So sad.
It’d be sadder if they were already scrapped like the steam locomotives were.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I love trains who don’t like trains how could they 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@@yingli3120 It was because they were transitioning to the new EMD diesels, cause you could hook 4 together, and get about 6000hp, roughly equivalent to the average steam locomotive 🚂 And only 1 guy to control all 4. They couldn’t cut em up fast enough. Yeah, I used to actually cry when I was a kid, after reading about it.
Both my Grandfathers worked at the breaker yard for Illinois central. They called it the shop . What fond memories Of the place . Thank you
Thanks airing and sharing the outstanding video with magnificent locomotives although 'rejected '..Railfanning endeavors are preponderating. Bliss
That's got to be one of the largest SuperFund sites we've ever seen!! That facility specializes in extracting EVERY possible dollar that's left that can be generated by this machine that's now at the end of it's useful service life. From the sale of still useful parts to the final act of scrapping what's left for the metal content and it's sale so to speak, not much goes to waste here!! Excellent video too...
I thought the drone work was great, and your attitude toward haters was spot on! thanks for a look into the past.
Very nice and relaxing flight. MA3 is definitely an amazing drone to fly. New Subscriber
Thanks for this video, I've been looking for a recent LTEX drone for a while. Great piloting!
So much great 2nd and even 3 gen power - sitting derelict - many of which are likely to never be used again. Did anyone else notice the two tracks full of awesome 2nd gen NS power? Or the Amtrak P40DC's? (I had a cab ride in the 805 shown in the video) Or the Wisconsin Central F45's? Or the BN Dinky's from Chicago Commuter Service? SP Tunnel Motors? Santa Fe GP30's? Dash8-40C's? Dash8-40CW's? B40-8's? SD60's? I've traveled all across our beautiful country during the heyday when all of these units were in their prime - pulling tonnage or delivering passengers through the most beautiful parts of the USA. I'm truly thankful to have been alive and to have photographed these railroads. Their being in the dead line sort of reminds me of our own mortality and how time treats us all - people and machinery - the same.
You must remember..everything has a time and place..There time has gone..not really sad as
they served us well. Made this country great. I am old man of 84 years old. So my time will
be over....the bell will toll. Not sad for me. I have lived a good life and GOD has blessed
me indeed. Soon, do not know when but I am going to a better place indeed. Praise GOD ! 😊
And I had a dream that my train loving son and I went to heaven, and the whole place was covered in railroad tracks! So many, Standard Gauge down to about 1ft . gauge ❤ God bless!
Great flying, but very sad. I am always particularly sorry to see switchers awaiting scrap. You realise your age when you see Amtrak Genesis units and you remember them as new.
You really realize your age when you remember when F-units were only a few years old, or you see lines of locos on the dead line that were built years after you graduated from college. "All glory is fleeting."
wow - very cool indeed. Very well done. New sub here & look forward to watching more of your videos.
Great view and cool old locomotive.
Fantastic drone work!
I see former Amtrak 801 at 9:01. The 801 is currently being rebuilt and repainted in Keewatin Railway colors at Wabtec in Albia Iowa.
What about the other P40DCs?
@@joshthetrainfan 802, 803, and 839 are getting the same treatment as 801. 805 is also being rebuilt at Wabtec in Erie Pennsylvania.
@@zacharycalgher3978 Okay
@@zacharycalgher3978 The rumor I've heard is that 805 was only used for measurements at Wabtec Erie and will likely be scrapped. That's just from the grapevine though, so definitely not for certain. I also have suspicions that 839 was bought as a parts source for the other three, as last I saw it was sitting in the middle of a sea of stored units in Albia, stripped of its internals, while the others were nowhere to be seen (likely inside). The complete lack of information about it after around 2004 or so (when it was painted in Phase V) is really strange to me, and I think points to it having some serious problems. It's also unclear whether it was upgraded to P42 specs. But that's all just a hunch as well.
@@zacharycalgher3978 839 is sadly scrapped.
Wow .... I just came across this video .... Subscribed!!! 👍
Nice drone footage of this yard it’s crazy how much locomotives they have there
Interesting video and location. Good work. 👍
Oh this footage is SO amazing! Great work, no idea these existed. I know of LTEX from equipment running through Flagstaff AZ on the Southern TransCon. As a UP fan, I'm amazed at all the UP units and pieces parts seen. And parts is parts.
Some railroad museum needs to buy these pieces of history😢
Simply an amazing place
Nice work. Had a pang of pain seeing a couple GP30's...
Amazing footage. It looks like they have about a quarter of the entire GP15-1 production run in storage.
At 16:45 there is a really clean Santa fe
Wow, agree with the lottery wins, I could have the best vrbo made of trains. Sleeping in and old engine. Just wow. Beautiful area of trains. I was born in the wrong era, should have been prior to the sixties. Thank you for the great photos. Videos.
Great video.
A Victorville for trains, very cool!
So sad so quiet, great video
i live about a hour from there, ive been to mcdonald about 2 times i,loaded my truck at the mill they just closed down last year, lordstown i have too see, im a swither slug person myself love those old small units
The DM&IR units still have taconite pellets all over them, pretty wild. Interesting that a few of the NS nee N&W GP38ACs are still extant for now.,
And amazing piloting skills!
God seeing those hulks of metal that were once BN E9AM's hurts to look at especially since some of them are in such bad shape that pieces of the streamline casing have been torn off haphazardly in what I were assume switching accident. I do hope that some museum tries to save at least one of them, whatever one is in the least bad mechanical and cosmetic shape, and buy another for spares to try and get one running.
I’d love to walk those grounds and pick out a decent pneumatic bell and rebuild able set of horns.
I've not been following CSX much, but it looks like they've gotten rid of a lot of their SD50 and SD50-2 units. Whether any are worth rebuilding to SD40E standards for other customers or not remains to be seen.
Any major 645 power programs are likely history.
so many historical locomotives just waiting to see the torch
9:01 - Amtrak 811 from the Silver Spring wreck of 1996.
My God, it breaks my heart to see these beautiful giants of the rails like that! Thousands of miles covered and each one has a story from a better time! I would love to be there to admire them again! It's bad that they have to die!!!!!
WOW
People have nothing better to than bitch about the altitude of the drone? WTF? I think the way you've put this together is pretty damn cool.
That place must be spotters paradise.
Amazing beauties!
Great video! I wish some could save some of these locomotives but they probably will just scarp them anyways.
Places like that have that melancholic atmosphere about it, discarded locs there to die ...
Trying to remember where this is
Mcdonald, Ohio and Lordstown Ohio respectively. Just west of Youngstown along the CSX New Castle line. Made my day to see you commented Shoestring I have loved listening to your advice for years!
Hiya Shoestring…!
R.I.P. 😢
@@Alaskan454 This is one of his last comments .... He was found dead floating in a lake shortly after this ... R.I.P.
Wow
the big red building in the background was mcdonald steel they just when out of business
OMG those BN EMD F units deserve to be restored/preserved. Sad to see so many glorious diesels in various conditions of Salvage/parts. Neat seeing original SF, BN, SP, & Conrail units!
Ltex owner be like : this is mine mine mine mine mine. After 4 years : nope we will scrap it
Amazing how old machines can evoke such emotion. Cool video thanks for posting!
quelle gaspillage bonjour la nature
So, here is where the colossal and mighty rest...
At 10:17, is a very special unit to me, GEXR 3054. I used to see it all the time on GEXR 431 in Stratford, Ontario. As a GEXR railfan, it makes me sad to see it in the shape it is and what it's future holds.
Great video footage! Wondering whose SW1500 units 1527, 1526 those were at 2:58 thanks!
Is this a scrap operation, rebuilder, or a little of both. That is a lot of locos.....a few tanks. Thanks
LTEX has a lease fleet and a massive parts operation. The units near the buildings are probably closest to active status. Some units are likely stored under contract. I'd bet half the units that end up at LTEX get scrapped.
#HeavyDsparks what can you do with this pick of choices to rebuild or modify!
Wow, great video! First-timer here. I subscribed. Cheers.
PS: It would be interesting to know how all that equip got there, why it's there and, what's going to happen to it all?
it is so sad to watching them in a graveyard..soo many thousand miles and memories...😪😪
There are alot of the CSX and BNSF locomotives there! Was sad to see the ex-DMIR locomotives ended up there though.
anybody know why theres all those cut off cabs at the start of the video? do they intend to refurbish/re-use them or something?
they take a lot longer to cut up than the rest of the unit so they just don't bother
Nice video! I don't know anything about trains, but is this some sort of "boneyard" where the trains are retained for parts for the active fleet? Do some go to museums? What are the different types? Are any old and historic, WWII or older? I enjoyed it, thanks for posting.
I remember seeing NS 2402 (on the right at 2:40) back when it was being leased by the HMCR, lol. I remember NS got rid of it during their big roster purges a few years back, glad to see it's still around, at least for now. Ain't too many NS-painted units with the old Southern scheme poking through. I wonder what's up with all of those GE, especially Dash-8 and Dash-9, cabs just laying around? Parts sources? I see the NWR-painted U-boat still exists at 6:25 as well.
The electronics modules have a lot of resale value. GE was far too stringent on new aftermarket replacement parts.
@@MilwaukeeF40C Makes sense. I had a feeling it was parts-related.
I was a Locomotive engineer for 30 yrs for the BNSF I wonder how many of those units I might have ran in my career
Probably not all, but I wonder how many of these units could be refurbished and put back into service ?
Hopefully they save all those F units.
I got to ride a lot of BN Es, even worked on the F45s.
Fantastic drone footage why so many good locomotives and a lot cut up?
12:55 someone should have saved one of them😢
Imagine all the shady stuff going on inside them old Loco's , party central
Is this like a u-pullit for rail?
Such a Sad locomotives. Please, help preserve them. Don’t let them rust away into nothingness.
most of them are fairly modern locomotives rendered obsolete by government edict. if you don't see where everything is headed you are blind.
All six of the railroads are cross invested with the entities profiting on edicts. It's a Big Club and you ain't in it.
Yes. Anything the govt has their hands in turns to a disaster.
Which location has the E units in line with the forgotten F-45's?
West end of ltex futility?
It’s very sad to see such history just deteriorate, even if someone were to wanna possibly purchase one how can it be removed from within the others I’m wondering, what is the future of these locos ? Are they gradually being scrapped or just accumulating ? Thank you for posting.
Ifieverwinthelottrey I want to pick 6 locomotives out 😊
I thought the drone work was great. Sad to see all those locos will probably never see work again. So many of them I need to take a visit out there.
#preservethec40-8s
Why do they keep all them cabs?.
A bunch of the Genesee locos were sent for scrap after a settlement with the EPA. Genesee has new EPA compliant locomotives but the EPA found excuses to complain about how emissions maintenance inspection were being kept. They would have been better off sticking with older locos.
Wow!!! This is a HUGE reclamation/ rehabilitation center for trains!!! Where is this place located??? Are these trains turned into scrap??? Or are they rehabilitated then sold as used/ preowned equipment??? It would be sad to have them sit there and rot!!! Maybe a story can be written about this facility and railroading!!! In town where I live freight trains pass thru every few minutes and sometimes I am in awe of all that they do to have our economy running 24/7!!! GOD BLESS TRAINS and all that are involved with them and what they do!!!🚂🚆🛤️🚂🚆🛤️🚂🚆🛤️
I see SD40-2s gonna be shipped out to NS
I would love to see these be remove the engines and stored for mini homes, parks, dinning cars. Make the old days come back with a 2024 or older style .
I am a train lover, it makes me very sad to see them like this, abandoned, like unburied dead.
Notice that there wasn't any GP30s . I wonder why ? Could it be that its everyone's favorite ; which means no one would let one be scraped .
is this just a scrap yard or do they rebuild and resell as well?
Where is this located at?
The most heartbreaking shots are of the decapitated heads of the locos, the cabs by themselves.
4:04 I'm having pain 😭😭😭
Is there any way that we could have two tabs attached to each other on one rail cart the morbidity of the issue of reversing forward but have some way in a walking path from one cow to the next.
I am so upset seeing these Norfolk Southern, locomotives and CSX locomotive just sitting there doing nothing so sad I think Norfolk Southern needs to get all them locomotives back up and running I seriously mean it do you agree with me
😮😮😮 that's insane I would paid $3 million to have them all rebuilt with new parts etc😮😮😮😮
Cost more than three million to bring them up to EPA standards cheaper to scrap and buy new ones
There should be a raffle where each of the commenters on this video are given at least one engine or railcar.
2:29 is it just me or do these locomotives look somewhat newly repainted?
Makes you become very sad to see all those Locomotives in the condition they are in.🥺
I don’t know why, but it makes me sad to see all them trains injured just sit there
now this so sad thoes old trains setting there just sad
Классные локомотивы, жаль что гниёт на улице. 😢
dam thoes sd40 45s units should not be there if it was up to me they would be back in the rails where they belong
Tell EPA
