- After World War II, Walt Disney had finances stuck in Europe so he opted to start making live-action films in England. Those films cemented his love for the process as well as being able to financially keep the Disney Studio afloat. Throughout the 1950s, he would begin creating formulas, assembling a crew, and creating some of the best live-action films the studio has ever created including Treasure Island, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Old Yeller, The Shaggy Dog, and the Swiss Family Robinson.

This era was crucial for the growth of Disney. Disney was classified as a small independent studio during the 1930-1940s. They were classified as a Mini-Major during the 50s-80s. The. During the 80s, they were officially called a Major film studio. However this love-action era really transformed the company from a struggling small studio to a major Hollywood studio.
Nailed it! Without the live-action films they would have continued to struggle and Walt wouldn't have had the pull to do some of the major things he was looking to do like Disneyland and the city of Tomorrow.
Darby O'Gill and the Little People will always hold a special place in my heart from that era. It's too bad you didn't have the time to cover that one, but I do understand.
Its a very fun film but as I was trying to put together what films would be best to highlight, it didn't make the cut. Thats not to rule out a future video on it, but as this video was reaching the 20+ minute mark, I felt like I couldn't cover everything.
I subscribed to you after you made the animated era playlist. Glad I’m here when your making this series. So excited!
Thank you so much for finding the channel first off and I'm so glad you can be here as this series rolls onward!
The 1950s were the best era 4 Disney movies.
I really enjoyed this! As a lover of classic Disney live action and one of the things I promote on my Instagram page I really appreciate the time and effort you put into this. Also, the shoutout to Sessue Hayakawa is well deserved! I look forward to your future installments!
Appreciate it. I didn't think there would ever be another time to talk about Hayakawa so this was my chance to talk about his importance in early 20th century film. This video was one of the hardest to make. What to leave in? What to take out? What films to highlight? It was a lot to think about when writing it but I feel good about it overall. I know asking people to commit for 25 minutes is a lot so thank you for watching!
I love the fact that people would bring their dogs into the theatre to see Old Yeller. I can only imagine what that must be like. Whenever Old Yeller would appear on the screen, all the dogs in the cinema would be barking.
James Mason starred in the first REMAKE of A Star is Born. The original is the one made in 1937 with Frederic March and Janet Gaynor. And who is “Peter Law”? Other than those quibbles - great video!
Ahh dangit you are correct. I forgot that there are 4 versions of the film and not 3. I also had my microphone accidentally cut the "E" off "Lorre" and had to shave that piece for time.
Thank you for these videos, many of the films you mention I haven't heard of since they weren't as popular here in Latinoamérica, I'm glad I get to know them and actually watch some of them on Disney+ now
Because I can't go in depth on every film, I wanted this to be a really good "recommendation list" for people who are unfamiliar with the films or these eras. I'm so glad you picked up on that and I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on some of these films as you watch them!
Loved the animated series. Great start for the live action era 🤩
Glad you enjoyed. This one was much more difficult than the Hybrid era before it. It only get ls more complicated from here. Hoping I can make sense of it all!
What is the favorite thing you learned in this video? Are you planning to watch any of these movies now?
I never watch Old Yeller because of the ending. Love the movie up to that point. Also, Fred MacMurray was not known as a comedic actor. He did over 100 films, with many being Dramas and Westerns.
Kinda funny how the Live Action Robin Hood is lesser known compared to the animated one despite being first
There have been a ton of Robin Hood films, but none are as popular as the 1970s animated version. It just goes to show how drawn to animation people are and how universal the medium is.
@@ModernMouse Not to mention Warner Bros id there own Robin Hood movie back in the 40's and many of there famous characters, Bugs , Daffy and Tom and Jerry had one or 2 Robin Hood based stories
The way I remember the movies of this era is from "Wonderful World of Disney"!
And as an aside, the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse was one of my favorite attractions at Disneyland when I was 10!
My memory of them is seeing them at my grandparents house because my grandfather loved westerns so I saw some of those Fess Parker films there....and I too absolutely love the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. I like the Tarzan version too but there is something great about that hearing that polka music while you ascend the tree.

What is your favorite Disney live action film era?
Mason was in the first remake of Star is Born Frederick March was in the 1930s original
I completely spaced that one. Forgot there were 4 versions of the film and not 3. Good call.
Hold on! I did not even know there was another Disney Robin Hood 😲
And this is why I’m here 🤓
We are in this together!
I loved Guy Williams as Zorro.
💕
That was the fastest anyone has ever been to a video! Thanks for the super quick love!
@@ModernMouse Thank you! This video was amazing! I love your editing 😍
It's been a work in progress for a long time so thank you!
I love these old Disney movies and the ones made for TV. My favorite is Swiss Family Robinson. Now when you watch it, there is a warning at the beginning to warn you about the use of ASIAN actors as pirates and trying not to offend anyone. Disney is ruining their business and products with their WOKE garbage.
May I ask why you feel so upset about the warning? From the last time I watched the film they didn't take out any scenes or alter the film in any way. All they've done is add the warning at the beginning which lasts a few seconds. It's not harmful and is easy to skip over.
