    I really don't get Lasseter. He did an interview on the stigma of 2D movies in the eyes of the public, but then he first shuts down their Australian studio, then he blamed Princess and the Frog's failings on its title, sent Winnie the Pooh 2011 to die against Harry Potter, then claimed 2D was no more. And then decided Disneytoon's Planes was good enough for cinema.
    For a guy that claimed to be on 2D's side his actions didn't reflect that.

      Honestly, the whole "ending" of the episode could've been a separate episode in itself...I mean they quite literally shut down DA Australia, and then just outsourced all the CGI animations to Prada Studios...which is kinda the same thing Disney was doing before, which they were so critical of

    21:50 -- Regarding Lasseter's disdain for the direct-to-video sequels, I always thought that the Gusteau's frozen TV dinners in "Ratatouille" were supposed to represent the sequel films. You know, the TV dinners that the heroes burn in a bonfire :D.

    • @VCJunkie
      @VCJunkie 4 года назад +50

      I’ve also viewed Ratatouille as a metaphor for the inner-workings of The Walt Disney Company in the mid-2000’s. Gusteau is Walt Disney, inspiring the young artists, Skinner is Eisner, always putting profit over quality, and never wanting to experiment, Linguini is the Pixar leadership, feigning competence, but ultimately clueless without that true creative influence, and Remy represents the artists at Pixar, always eager to display their skills, but never given the opportunity to succeed.

    • @cruzcflores
      @cruzcflores 4 года назад +24

      Cruz Flores Lol (it’s “Sunnyside,” btw)
      All joking aside, the previous era of Pixar (post-Toy Story 3, pre-Incredibles 2) was run in a manner similar to how Lotso ran Sunnyside.
      John Lasseter controlled nearly every aspect of production, and granted creative freedom to the directors in his inner circle (Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, Brad Bird, and Lee Unkrich). However, anyone outside of that circle, both veteran and newcomer, would be given very little freedom, and would often be separated from their projects (some examples of this treatment can be seen with Brenda Chapman and Brave, Doug Sweetland and Monsters University, and Bob Peterson and The Good Dinosaur).

    One has to wonder just how dark Dopey's backstory was to make that Snow White spinoff TOO dark... I mean, this was based off Snow White, which is so much scarier and intense for children than we all remember because we internalized our collective trauma.
    -Don't get me wrong. I'm glad that there's a Disney movie that challenges kids and stays pretty true to its dark roots. I just can't go in the woods at night without getting freaked out about trees with demonic faces thanks to that movie (totally normal almost 30 year old behavior, right). What the hell was so dark about Dopey's story that outdid demon trees, attempted assassination/organ harvesting, and horrific transformations?

    • @ForeverLaxx
      @ForeverLaxx 4 года назад +64

      Well, according to the line shown on screen in the video, Dopey was apparently going to play witness to his own mother's gruesome death. That turns a character from a comedic relief role into one of tragedy I guess.

      @@ForeverLaxx They were, apparently, wanting to give a reason for Dopey's muteness. The idea being that he went mute from the trauma of seeing his mother die. This would've been a pretty bad idea, since it actually contradicts the explanation that had already been given for Dopey's muteness in the original film. Dopey couldn't have gone mute for any reason (traumatic or otherwise) because it's specified that he's never spoken a word in his life. Happy states in the original film that Dopey doesn't even know if he can speak or not 'cause he simply has never tried (that being one of the things that makes him "dopey").

But you cannot ignore the cognitive dissonance between that and all the sugar-and-soy-laden junk food they sell at the parks. The animation is on par with 'Princess and the frog' and has songs I still remember! It was stuck in animation hell and was first teases on TLM special edition movie DVD as a trailer but was delayed 3 and a half years.
    Seriously the movie is worth a watch. It gives a great back story to Atlantica and explains why the mermaids fear humans, and what happens to Athena- Ariel's mother.

Not mentioned in this video but there is also a script to a unmade Roger Rabbit prequel where Roger is raised by humans and after finding out he is a Toon goes in search of his parents. Someone's probably said this by now, but Leroy and Stitch was a sequel to the Lilo and Stitch TV show, but not Lilo and Stitch 2. L&S2 was mostly a side story that has little to no impact on the series and was never brought up or referenced in the TV show or Leroy and Stitch. It was basically as relevant as Fox and the Hound 2 and the Beauty and the Beast sequels.

    In Walt's time, there were spinoffs, of a sort, in books and records. Scamp was originally one of those properties. I've always tried to look at the DTV movies as a version of those books, but the books still had an artistic quality about them that isn't in these cheap knockoffs. I'm glad Lasseter finally killed off these dreadful sequels.

    • @Attmay

    Interestingly enough, The Gummy Bears used a lot of ideas from The Black Cauldron of all things and even counts as a spiritual successor. Snow White's father being the skeleton is fittingly dark as the original idea for the movie was much darker than what was seen on film. I'm surprised that Cinderella III wasn't mentioned. It's a time travel story where the villains get what they want but it doesn't end in the way they expect. Plus, it has an Assassin's Creed-style jump or two. It's truly one of the strangest of the DTV sequels.
    The DTV sequels weren't replaced by shorts. They were replaced by big-budget theatrical sequels that are still DTV sequels in terms of how well their narratives hold up. Frozen II is a perfect example of this.
