The Disney logo always looked look Gisney to me. I pronounced it as gisney, which sounds alot like jizz knee, which also confused me as a kid. I was more confused because i wasn't lysdexic so I thought all signatures had to begin with a backwards letter.

Fun Fact: Chuck E. Cheese's (the character's) official backstory is that he was an orphan, so no one ever celebrated his birthday, and this upset him so much that when he grew up, he made a fun restaurant-arcade for kids to go for their birthdays so no one had to experience party-less childhoods like he did.

Really? I never knew that! In recent news, a girl who worked there threw a young boy a birthday party when no one showed up. She couldn't handle his reaction so all the employees of that location got together and made it special for him. Goes right with the backstory (if that is true)....making her kind act even better.

There's a plaza by my childhood home where the only business left standing is a Chuck E. Cheese's. Like, sure, it outlasted a Blockbuster, who didn't, but it also outlasted a major regional grocery store, a Little Cesar's, a popular local Chinese food restaurant, a Pub 99, a nail salon, and a CVS. When the world ends, Charles will still stand tall.

I was watching this video when my mom came in and started watching it with me. She told me I had a Pooh themed party at Club Disney when I was really little and that it was the worst thing ever. Club Disney had messed up big time from printing the wrong location (TO instead of Covina), to giving my presents away to a different family, and never giving me my cake or Mickey pizza. I don't remember any of this (I was 3-4) but apparently I was devastated since I only had 3 people (all of whom were my cousins) show up to my freaking party due to the printing error sending people to the wrong location. My mom ended up buying each of us one toy from the store to make up for it. She was quite livid after the whole ordeal. She made Club Disney track my presents down to return to me and demanded a refund for all the money she had spent for the party. They found & returned my presents and she got every dime she spent on this disaster of a party refunded to her. They apparently never apologized for any of this.
All in all I learned something new from my mom and Defunctland!

I crawled through those colourful, sweat smelling tunnels for what felt like ages (but was probably only a couple of minutes). I could hear other people but I only saw one other kid peaking out from behind a corner only to skitter back when she saw me.
I’m not saying I temporarily clipped into a child version of the backrooms, but I think we can all agree that if there existed such a place, one entrance would definitely be inside a McDonalds

After being "the best hider" for like maybe twenty or thirty minutes I gave up and eventually went down the slide. I remember being really mad and asking my sister what happened, she said,"I forgot to go in there!" Also I was extremely shy/ possibly antisocial as a kid... If you were the kid in purple you did look hella lost/confused. If it wasn't you, "I'm sorry kid in a purple striped shirt." 😊😅😂

When the flash happens, the photosensitive walls will retain any shadow that got cast on them until the next flash occurs.

I worked at Chuck E Cheese about 7 years ago when I was 16. When you were talking about the Play Place I was reminded about this time when a kid wouldn't come out of the little overlook area. His mom didn't feel comfortable climbing up there so the manager went up to try to get him out. When she gets up there we see her hands slip and her fall on her face. Turns out the kid had taken his full diaper off and wiped his feces all over the tube and she had fallen face first into it. The other manager demanded that either my coworker or I go up and clean it. The three of us walked out and never went back.

Disney really is a such a morally grey company. While employing very talented artists, engineers, and people who I think do genuinely care about kids, they are also a giant capitalistic leviathan who now have become the Standard Oil of entertainment. Issues such as low employee pay at their resorts still persist to this day. As someone who was born in Orlando Disney stories always hit close to home for me as what Disney produces truly highlights our society's surreal contradictions.

+Stevie 1. Neither Disney or Bob Iger weren't going to do anything about their workers' low salaries until they were publicly shamed by Bernie Sanders. And 2. it really says everything about our society when people will run and take up for a large impersonal corporation over actual flesh and blood workers. The brainwashing is truly fascinating and scary at the same time. Sure Disney stories are good and they hire very talented and well meaning creatives, but at the end of the day Disney the company only cares about its shareholders and nothing else. They do *not* care about you or your family. Us Americans really do need to step out of our right-wing economic Stockholm Syndrome and learn that large corporations do not need to be defended. Our social and economic systems are broken and Disney's issues are just symptoms of these larger problems.

    • @justinreid2947
      @justinreid2947 6 лет назад +47

+Moby Green This consumerist "personal choice" narrative is just flat-out corrosive and the cause of pretty much all of our country's problems. A choice of products is the furthest thing from choosing your own destiny, and fooling people into thinking that buying and selling things is the purest form of freedom has made them way easier to control by those in power. This is the true face of neoliberalism, which really is a form of social darwinism in a clever disguise, and it seeks to turn every aspect of life into a commodity that is to be bought and sold. This comment from a socially right-wing perspective, but this has also taken over too much of the so-called "left" as well. I hope this disgusting greedy ideology crashes like the authoritarian Communist societies because ideas like these are truly Communism's evil reverse image. People are sick and tired of "business" having lordship over their lives and people on the right and center need to understand that.

I live near the first Club Disney and my kid was small, so we LIVED there!! It was awesome, but they made a few basic mistakes. First, it skewed too young. Most of it was for pre-schoolers (Pooh, princess dress up, etc), which left out too many kids. The computer games were super basic/young (and the computers were usually broken anyways). There was a baby/toddler play zone, and then the climbing structure, which was kinda small - think McDonalds size. Plus, they had miscalculated the main slide and the first week kids got hurt - that’s the reason there was always a worker at the top. Which leads to the biggest problem - it was WAY too reliant on human workers. Parents chilled in the cafe (which had excellent food), and a worker had to be in each semi-separate zone to police bullies etc. They tried to have interactive shows nearly continuously in the little theater, which required skilled entertainers; magicians, comedians, etc. The cafe required cashiers, cooks, busboys. Constant cleaning was needed all over. It was easy to see how the cost of employees was very high. And surprisingly, many times we would be there and there were few customers, especially after the first year or so. Even in an affluent area, there are only so many stay-home moms hanging out with their preschooler in the middle of a weekday. Other people were bothered by the “high” admission charge, as the place just wasn’t that big, but we had a monthly or yearly pass, and I appreciated that there were no tokens to buy, like Chuck E. Cheese had. Overall, it was a class act and very well done, and we really mourned when they closed. Disney admitted it made money, just not “enough” money.

Maybe it was a precaution against too many kids going down the slide at once, idk. I had no idea there was so few of these places! I feel special now :) Thank you Kevin!! Every time I could pester my dad to take me there for the day was pure heaven, the enormous plastic tube maze was the epitome of adventure and the dozens of arcade games offered endless entertainment. Places like that really sum up 90's childhood entertainment for me. I actually had my 6th birthday party (A Bug’s Life themed) at Club Disney, the West Covina location if I recall correctly! I remember it fondly and how immersive the whole event was for all of us kids. I know I have a VHS recording of that party, complete with footage of exploring The Hundred Acre Wood and Merlin giving us a show. Everything was interactive, and each kid got nicely crafted ant antennae headbands (Flik ones for the boys, Dot ones for the girls, and yours truly the birthday girl got Princess Atta’s with her tiara). One of my favorite birthday memories, it was a shame Club Disney was so short lived.

Oh goodness not the Rock-a-Fire Explosion...
When I was a kid I used to frequent a place called Fun Station USA. It was a pretty sweet arcade and had some indoor rides. They had a Rock-a-Fire explosion show there, and as I got older (around 11) the animatronics began to break down. But instead of, I dunno, getting rid of them, they just placed the broken and old animatronics in random places in the arcade.
My day camp was at Fun Station, and one of my counselors asked me to get something from a big utility closet. I walked in to get paper towels or whatever, and BOOM the fucking cheerleader mouse robot was towering over me. I was traumatized.

There was a Fun Station USA on Staten Island (where I'm from). I went there a million times but I never saw a Rock-A-Fire Explosion.

so wild to hear my hometown being a first location for a huge play zone, most people wouldn't think midwest for a starting point of a franchise! love learning all this history behind these long gone places/atrractions, I always look forward to the new videos when they come out c:
