This is the most beautiful version I have heard. Outstanding. Transcending all my anxieties about life and completing my PhD. I'm an Irishman living in England. This song is special to me and I'm certain its going to get me through a lot in life. God bless you all.
My Uncle Tommy wanted this to be the song at his funeral. He died sooner then expected. But we searched for a store that had it, and My uncle Tommy Got his wish... It is a song his mother (my grandmother) sang to her sons (she had 8)...So I had 8 uncles. All died before my grandmother. She sat there and listened to that lullaby... I think it was like soothing him to sleep again like a boy.
My Grandpa would play this song over and over again in the car, in every different version. He passed away yesterday. Be at peace Grandpa. A great man. A great life. You will be missed xxx
This song is my emotional kryptonite. There only a few things that can make me cry. This song is one of those things. Especially when Michael Londra is singing it. His voice is perfect for bringing out the somber tone. The background music and lyrics also add to the somber tone.
I remember watching this video years ago, now I came across it again and it's still amazing! The most beautiful version of Danny Boy I've ever heard!!!
this was my grandfather's favourite song ever, played it in his funeral. . . . 6 yrs later I had a puppy and called him Danny Boy. . . when Danny Boy was about 3 yrs old, I took him to where my grandfather's ashes were scattered and he walked straight to the exact spot. "And i shall hear how soft you tread upon me". makes me think my grandfather's spirit lives on in my dog? ? is this possible??
+Sharon quinnz hi sharon, im mary my wee dad died 18thfeb 13. long long story our history together....so beauitiful, so painful.....this was our song together....he sang it and i played it on piano.....me and my wee sis lived with him on our own after him and mum split up when i was 11. anyway, long story short :) dad didnt like fussy versions of this song.....just straight forward beautiful versions....and when he died, i went through a few.... and this is the one i choose... and posted n fb, but im now returnin to it and sharon u were probably already here at that time, but im only ready now to see who else really appreciated this song. and that this connects u to ur dad too, well thats very special. xxxxx
I've made my six children promise that they (and hopefully grandchildren) will sing this song at my funeral. It's an amazingly beautiful song about good-byes, especially good-byes that might last a long time... For all the angry people on this post, forgive each other...
I too am of mixed race, Irish and Yorkshire, but your comments truly bring me to my knees. I have a naturalised American son and an American grandson, born and bred in Florida, also of the Grey. May we always fight for the right, for this song will ever bond all those who have to do what is right in this world.
I came to this site while watching "Thank You, Mr. Hodges!" A WW2 POW apparently sang this song at night in the prison camp when it got very quiet! I have tears streaming down my face right now after listening to this! ...and peace to you and yours Roxanne Santori. There are still good people in this world! Thanks for sharing.
Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. And if you come, when all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
look, just to stop people saying the same thing. the song was written by an English guy but was made for the Irish...okay, we all good? then can i actually read some comments rather than people saying who wrote it or who it was made for. no one cares. its an amazing song, the song and the meaning is all that matters.
I spoke these words at my Dads funeral and I'll always remember my father when I hear this song....It was very appropriate because I will indeed bend and tell him I love him.....for eternity.....Love you Dad
Whenever I feel gloomy and just want to have a good cry, I put this song on and I let my eyes pour. It's relieving and soothing. This is damn beautiful.
such a beautiful song .respect to Ireland from Serbia.Find on net "Orthodox Celts. That is band from Belgrade who play Irish music.Just listen "Far away" from Otrhodox Celts
I've been listening to. Danny Boy my entire life and I'm pushin 70 this is the most heartfelt rendition I have ever heard. I'm leaving for Ireland is 6 weeks and I know when I get there what I want to hear this Van Morrison. Rans good
Hi, I`m a german folker loving this song. I sang it on my father side as he layed dead in 2006, 4 years later I had to do the same for my brother. And now, after 1 and a half year, I hear the song again and tears come in my eyes...for me it`s a bridge to the persons I lost. Is it romatic? Am I a fool? You can think about me and this son whatever you want. It`s a great gift for all people with a feeling heart.
We had this song played at my football coaches funeral. I can't listen to this song without thinking of him and crying. I love you coach mac. You saved my life as well as many others
That's why God loves the Irish. Faith, he loves the dear old sod Second only to his God, And he prays someday her freedom she will gain. Thank you Michael. I was listning to your "Holy Ground" while taking a walk in the garden yesterday and ended up sitting down while the sun won over the cold winds. What a fine day it ended up being.
You're being logical if you call it Derry. That's what it was called before the British changed it. If you want to be at peace, it makes sense to revert to the original name of Derry
3days from now will mark the 6th month anniversary of my fathers passing.3years ago he showed me Danny Boy,and gave me an appreciation for this song. At the time I was only 13, still pretty sheltered, so I had no idea why he showed me this. In the past 3 1/2years I've grown a lot.I see now that he showed me this song so I would have something that really reminded me of him. like a note, and this song is just that.I'm now taking this song to solo contest in a choir contest just for him :)
My sons and daughters will one day song this at my funeral and I, I shall be listening with tears streaming down my face one last time as I bid them farewell..
You did, and I wondered what you sang until now I found it funny, but now it's sad It makes sense..you've lost Good Cop And replaced him with Scribble Cop in sear h for your counterpart
Though he was not Irish, my father Manfred Anson always loved this song. Probably because he spent a good part of his life in Australia where lived a great many of the Irish people. He was a seargeant in the Australian army and fought against the Japanese in New Guinea during WWII. And now I have a great love for this song along with all Irish music from that fine land. I love you and miss you every day dad, your devoted son, Joel
this song reminds me of my husband who died of lung cancer in 2008, i miss u so much my darling husbandand i know u are no longer in pain and u are with the anagals and we will meet again lots of love from ur wife clare weaver xxxxxx
+Simon Watts lol. You couldn't let us have anything. Bitter English people are like that ex girlfriend you left -- they're always trying to worm their way back into your life and wreck your head.
So what? Who cares what nationality was the person who wrote it? It's a great song, and for anyone is free to sing it. Haters going to hate, as Taylor Swift would say.
This was my Dad's favorite song. He just passed away at 102 years old. He was a great father to me and husband to my Mom. I will miss him forever and ever. Love you Dad......
This is the most beautiful song of all time. Rest in peace Thomas E. McParland. I was a pole-bearer at his funeral. There was a piper there, playing this song beautifully. I cried so hard. He had Parkinson's and died with his wife in his hands. Now whenever I hear this i burst into tears.
After my great grandfather died several years ago, my great grandmother had the lyrics of this song written down on a small piece of paper. She always held onto it and constantly read it to tears. She is now in the hospital and won't last the week. She asked this song to be played at her funeral. She's been living a wonderful 97 years and has touched countless people's lives. She will be back with her husband soon and for that, I am happy for her.
This is mine and my Grandpa Dan's song. Throughout my life, I've asked him multiple times to sing this song to me. He's asked me to SING it at his funeral someday, but I honestly don't think I'll be able to, at least not without my cousins singing with me. Even then, I'll probably burst into tears in the middle. I think I'll just have this version play over the speakers...and try to sing along with it...
this tugs at my heart strings hence playing it on you tube, remeinds me of my grandad danny, my uncle danny, my brother danny, my nephew little danny and his son daniel.x
..my mother passed away a few years ago on xmas day nite,,,being irish we have a younger brother named Danny,,so they played this at her funeral,,,u never know the true meaning of this song ,,until u hear it in church,,ERIN GO BRAGH god bless ireland
There are many signs that adulthood has arrived. One, is the day you hear this song and it goes from just another tune from childhood to something that hits you right between the eyes and you suddenly understand why it made all the grown-ups cry, way back when. If there is a more beautiful, poignant song about love, loss and being human, I don't know it.
What a lovely rendition of this song-my Dads' favorite. Because of him; our family is very proud to have shamrocks on our family tree! I heard this performed live; and just cried. And-I got to 'dance' the jig on stage; and I'll cherish these memories for the rest of my life:).
we have all loved and lost, and this song is the embodiment of these feelings. the fact that we feel them proves our love for them and that they wont be forgotten, ever. never fear, cose someone, somewhere, loves you. Greetings form Belgium :)
We had a great tenor, who knew my Dad, sing this live at my father's funeral in 1996. I can still remember the tenor singing while crying. So was everyone in the church.
Im not Irish but being as a father to a youn man can relate to the sentiment of this song. I agree with all the comments below, this is the most beautiful rendition I've ever heard of this song.
Im singing this song in my chorus class, the first time I heard it my and I were tearing up because our beloved friend Daniel had recently passed away. So now when we sing this song we think of our beloved DANIEL RAK. R.I,P.. THIS ONE IS FOR YOU DANNY BOY

Exactly the same as my granddad who died a few months ago and when I hear this all I can think of is him as it was also the song played at his funeral. I'm sorry to hear about your loss but just remember they will always be with us and watching over us.
My great uncle recently died, and he was born in Ireland. He was like a grandfather to me because I never got to meet my actual grandfather. My younger sister and I got the honor of singing this song at the funeral. He was born in Ireland and he'd always sing this song to my sister and I before we would go to sleep at night. I

I heard this for the first time at a funeral of a close friend, last summer. It's such a beautiful song.
Arguable the greatest song ever written.
@flip inheck Yep, Exactly right.

@@BerkshireBoy100 It's also set to the Irish tune 'Londonderry Air'
Beautiful English lyrics and Irish [Londonderry Air] music...... I bet you didn't know that!!!!
+Blushing Green DERRY AIR boy,DERRY AIR!

That's why God loves the Irish.
Faith, he loves the dear old sod
Second only to his God,
And he prays someday her freedom she will gain.
Ready with his wit and blarney,
Whether from Cork or Killarney,
To bring back the sunshine after rain.
And since he's been created, it's a fact well known,
He's fought for ev'ry other nation and his own.
My grandpa died a few weeks ago and this was his favorite song...truly beautiful....
my dad gave me a music box of this song before he left.
This should be our new National anthem!
And that should be my tardis
And Oi your following me! :D
+Gamer24/7
SP Murphy It's already the anthem of the North of Ireland- rightly or wrongly.
Agree Tyler and rightly
Thank you Michael. I was listning to your "Holy Ground" while taking a walk in the garden yesterday and ended up sitting down while the sun won over the cold winds. What a fine day it ended up being.
This is our anthem- The Londonderry Air- in the North. Proud Ulsterman; Proud Irishman. Greetings from County Antrim, Ireland! 26+6=1 !
Think u mean derry
+Irish And Proud Tal It literally is Derry now
+NemoNobody2092 i can confirm its derry. hopefully for obvious reasons
You're being logical if you call it Derry. That's what it was called before the British changed it. If you want to be at peace, it makes sense to revert to the original name of Derry
I have a twin brother called Danny and when my mum would put us to bed she would sing Danny boy. I would be so jelous.
At least your name isn't Danny.
3days from now will mark the 6th month anniversary of my fathers passing.3years ago he showed me Danny Boy,and gave me an appreciation for this song. Being Irish brought me here
same
+John Stots yes but it was meant for the Irish
I think that sometimes it sound like "you raise me up".
This song is older, much older than you raise me up. So more likely that it's the other way round.
hey I thought that to myself literally 2 seconds before reading your comment :) also it's apparently the tune to a hymn as well!!
Or does 'You Raise Me Up" sound like Danny Boy?
My sons and daughters will one day song this at my funeral and I, I shall be listening with tears streaming down my face one last time as I bid them farewell..
Love this song, and this song has nothing to do with leaving or stayin in with Brits, but I would stay, and it's Derry not londonderry
I sang this in The Lego Movie!
You did, and I wondered what you sang until now
I found it funny, but now it's sad

Written by an Englishman.

+Simon Watts lol. You couldn't let us have anything. Bitter English people are like that ex girlfriend you left -- they're always trying to worm their way back into your life and wreck your head.
But the lyrics are written by an Englishman, just to an Northern Irish tune. O.o

This was my Dad's favorite song. He just passed away at 102 years old. He was a great father to me and husband to my Mom. I will miss him forever and ever.
Love you Dad......
Written by an Engli.......we know. Give it a rest. It's not the third secret of Fatima. Nobody cares.
I do
This is the most beautiful song of all time. Rest in peace Thomas E. McParland. I was a pole-bearer at his funeral. There was a piper there, playing this song beautifully. I cried so hard. He had Parkinson's and died with his wife in his hands. Now whenever I hear this i burst into tears.

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It saddens me to see people copying the sound of this music and getting fame than it's origin...
I've been listening to this piece for over three years. Yours is the best vocal one I've ever heard in my entire life.
This was my papa's song. He used to sing it to me all the time. I bawl every time I hear it. R.I.P papa
