Best RUclips channel for golfers hands down. After 4 years off due to a back injury I developed a slice, found this channel, learned how to shift my weight, stopped going over the top, and am now hitting longer and straighter than I ever have. Still have a problem with my irons, I'm pushing my shots right and I'm taking too big a divot behind the ball on quite a few shots.
Very good explanation, not a "weight" shift, but a "pressure" shift onto the lead foot. The use of the term "weight shift" has set back so many amateur golfers...Careful not to let the knee move too far left of the lead foot. As I understand it, the lead leg straightens during the downswing, pressure moving into the left heel as it straightens.
I keep saying it but easily the best coach on RUclips. Explains things in a way that makes it easy to understand. Such a relaxed yet powerful swing too👍👍👍👍
Great lesson Chris. Have been working on this move a lot this year. The detail in your lesson clarified a mistake I’ve been making(# 2 wrong move) not quite to that degree but now I understand the flaw that causes me trouble from time to time. When I do it correctly the ball flight, accuracy and power are really quite exceptional. Thanks again!
Great video Chris. Really interesting seeing your comments about leaning backwards through the swing and what the repercussions of that are. May have uncovered a misdiagnosis in my driver slice. Seeing slo-mo footage of my driving I've previously been slicing due to a steep downswing, but now I've changed my swing that's gone, but still occasionally hitting wild slices. My follow through and finish position when driving has the club coming vertically over my shoulder instead of a rotated position (eg rory) and I'm leaning backwards. Seeing your exaggerated demonstration of the lean and the impact it has on the club face through the downswing may explain why i'm hitting the ball with an open face despite a good set up and path. I hit a lot of fat shots with my long irons, so I'm hoping I may have just stumbled across a swing flaw effecting a couple of my bad shots. Next stop, driving range. Lets see if you've solved a year long conundrum. Thanks
This was great, I have been researching "right arm extension golf downswing" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Penamillorn Peerless Prevalence - (do a google search ) ? It is a good one off product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method minus the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got excellent results with it.
Chris I have a little tip for you most people struggle to shift weight, they should try loading up the right leg at address this will help with the takeaway and get the club in a much better position at the top of the swing, then all they need to do is shift the weight to the left side on the down swing, this makes it much easier to control the golf club's syntrificall forces , a baseball player shifts to his right side and then his left side but remember he is only throwing a ball and not swinging a golf club.
Thanks Chris, will add this to the things you are already helping me with. My head moves back in the second way which is hard to fix. I am sure your advice will help as usual. Thanks again, Scott 👍👍👍
I know this is a few years old , but I love going through your video library to sort through my faults. Proper weight shift is my big challenge at the moment. Hitting down with the driver way too often. Been to both extremes. Is it a matter of moving pressure without the head going along. Any other drills would be appreciated. You are the best.
Great demo...would be interested in techniques to initiate the pressure change. I saw at the masters that mollinari does a small heel lift and plant on the left foot . This sequencing at transition is the most difficult for me.
Hi Chris I had a lesson today and I had the first problem as well as my weight on my toes. I found that my path was 2.8l and I could not hit a draw from the position.
love it, makes lots of sense, and hopefully stops me practicing the 2nd fault, i thought was the right way. thanks again chris, another very incisive vlog.
Great explanation mate 👍 This is exactly me. I started with the back foot swing and now I am on the other extreme of being too much forward with body weight shift. I’m thinking that the forward body position will improve the shaft lean and compress the ball better. But now my divots are too deep and fat shots are becoming quite frequent even when my weight is fairly forward on the left foot. Any thoughts on how to improve ? Please make a video for this ... Cheers 😁
Am certainly guilty of both these errors on most visits to the driving range in an attempt to find that "in between". Had never thought of it in terms of whether the left shoulder was too up or too down. Wonder if I can make a weight shift (and turn) to the left mesh with a rising left shoulder. . . Sitting here, it "feels" really good. :-)
Boy oh boy, error #1 has been killing my game for years. Steeper than the face of glacier at impact. Keeping my head relatively stationary has been very helpful.
Cheers for this, I have been researching "are arms passive in golf swing?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Penamillorn Peerless Prevalence - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a smashing exclusive product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method without the hard work. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my brother in law got great results with it.
Sometimes I do bad swing #1 and then the next time I may do bad swing #2. I believe Jack Nicklaus once said that during a golf swing one cannot concentrate on more than 3 things at a time. With these 2 bad swings...what swing thoughts should I have? Concentrate on using legs for the backswing and downswing? Concentrate on staying centered? Concentrate on light grip? I look forward to your comments. Gerry
Slide = stacking the hip, knee, and ankle. Shift = stacking the knee over the ankle but not the hip. Making sure that the left foot is placed outside of the left shoulder at set up makes this possible.
Yeah, audio out of time with vid after 2nd slowmo i think, great video, pressure is not weight, but takes practise to differentiate between the two, pls keep em coming Chris, happy new year by the way
Hi Chris, i can do the weight shift properly during my rehearsal swings, but when I put myself in front of the ball I can't reproduce the motion. Any thoughts on that? Thank you for your incredible channel, it has helped me a great deal.
Yeah, my 8-year-old daughter has the issue of bending away from the target when downswing (and the lead shoulder jumps up instead of keeping it low initially). Any effective drills to practice for juniors? Thanks.
Chris, at 1:30, you said to move left you apply pressure to your right side. I assume the opposite applies, that is, to move right, you pressurize your left side. However, very early in the backswing, the right side becomes pressurized. That would imply you should be moving left during that time. Also, fairly early in the downswing, the left side becomes pressurized. That would imply you should be moving right during that time. So, your opening physics concept seems to be the opposite of what you describe the remainder of the video. Can you explain this?
Hi Randsurfer, yep exactly as you say the opposite does apply. So pretty common to see elite golfers apply a little pressure through the left side as they begin the move away. The pressure then gets applied to the right side, normally by the time the lead arm gets level with the ground the pressure through the right is at its greatest as this is when the golfer begins to move back left. We then apply pressure to our lead side as we begin down. Many extremely long hitters of the ball will see this pressure move back towards the trail foot through impact for the reasons that you mention. However whilst you need to increase pressure to move laterally, moving pressure does not always mean you move laterally. Hope that clears it up a little.
No Chris. 90% of the pressurization felt during the golf swing is an effect, not a cause. By that I'm mean it is a reaction to weight shifting, not a cause of weight shifting. It is a bracing of that side against the inertia created when the swing moves that direction. For example, during the backswing, if the golfer doesn't pressurize the inside of his right foot, he will rock over the foot and end up laying on his right ear. Same apples during the downswing: the left foot and leg muscles must brace against the inertia of the swing going left. This pressurizing must happen early to "anticipate" this inertia.
+Randsurfer hi, again think we will have to agree to disagree on this one. Absolutely fine for people to have their own opinion on things, that's what makes our game so great. However I would respectfully say that you are, in this statement, disagreeing with some of the cleverest and most influential scientists, bio mechanists and coaches we have in our game today.
ChrisRyanGolf Neither my nor your opinion has any bearing on the physics of the real world. Nor does anybody's cleverness or influence. You don't shift to the left side by pressurizing your left foot. You pressurize your left foot as a result of shifting to the left side. The end sensation is the same, but the explanation is not. All of your technique instruction is correct, but your scientific explanation doesn't match.
I’ve been a subscriber for a while now and I just keep coming back to your instruction. It’s so helpful I had my best round yesterday just by putting this drill into play. thanks Chris!
Nice explanation Chris. The audio does go out of sync and Can you show front and rear views. Front on is two dimensional and difficult to get a full understanding.
Gread video, very well explained. It's like you were talking about me in the first part, things not to do. I tried them all :))). I am really struggling with my weight transfer and I think it's because I dont execute the backswing correctly. I really like to see some videos about: - driver swing vs iron swing (only the swing, not ball position, tilt of the body at address etc) - putting grip and setup - how much to bend foward at address, if I use the grip you explained in "Why you cant set your wrists" video and I keep my left arm straight, I have to stand much more up at address. Thank you !
I really hate how you say your way is the “correct” way in all your videos. There are 8 different videos with 8 different teachers saying their method is the correct method. They all can’t be right!!! I wish you would say “in my opinion” or “I think” instead of saying you are completely right.
Spot on Chris, so important to get this right in the golf swing. I think this is where the majority of golfers lose potential good golf swings. Cheers

Brilliant! This was very helpful! Currently struggling with proper lateral movement and keeping the right pressures applied consistently.

This video changed my ball striking so much on course today after only watching it last night. Will definitely be working on this more.. cheers 👍
best advice I've seen on youtube so far and I've seen ALOT of videos. Great explanation, keep it up! :)

Been struggling with the weight shift, I'm an arm swinger thanks for the video.
Apprciate opinion on this concept with driver swing. I do hang back on the hit but not with tbe iron when i try to trap the ball.
Great explanation mate 👍

You got some good videos here Chris. Very well explained.
Thanks for your great instructions, would love to have a series of lessons with you😀

Or, looking at it, again, maybe I could just keep the head from going in either direction. :-)
very nice lesson. I will try my next time out. Pressure vs. weight?
Boy oh boy, error #1 has been killing my game for years. Steeper than the face of glacier at impact. Keeping my head relatively stationary has been very helpful.
Thanks for this Chris I know this is something I've been struggling with 😃

Well explained..not sure if it is just me, but the lip sync or the audio malfunctioned a bit after 7 minutes in (after a slo mo). Cheers

Great video thanks Chris. We keep trying 🇿🇦
Slide = stacking the hip, knee, and ankle.
Shift = stacking the knee over the ankle but not the hip.

Liked the way Chris explained wrong way to shift weight..I practice both. Hopefully now on wards will be more watchful.
Nice video! Very well explained... Thanks.

Thank you for your incredible channel, it has helped me a great deal.
I'm struggling to do it but thanks for the good video.
Like your video Chris. Well explained.
again... another great video. congrats
I have done both of the first two moves...I found by having opposing thighs provide the feeling needed to get to the middle.
Great Video. .Can't wait to try it..
Clear, crisp and nice.
How are you making that move though? Are you just bumping or pulling front knee out?
another great video chris
have you got any videos or swing thoughts to help shorten a golf swing
Yeah, my 8-year-old daughter has the issue of bending away from the target when downswing (and the lead shoulder jumps up instead of keeping it low initially). Any effective drills to practice for juniors? Thanks.
CHRIS
Just watch your chipping lesson on your 3 point for chipping. The only thing is what club to use would be better
Very well explained

Good one. I feel like crushing agrape under my left heel...
This is the number one fault in my swing, I have trouble following through with my swing, thanks!
Thanks Dewey hope it helps 👍

Very nice video Chris, very helpful indeed.
May I ask... what kind of filming/audio recording equipment do you use?
Thanks...
Hi, I use my iPhone to record the audio and then just overlap it when I edit the videos, not the quickest way but seems to work ok at the moment
+ChrisRyanGolf
Thanks Chris...
What camera and editing software have you been using? Cheers!
+RollYourRock I use Corel Video Studio Ultimate X8 at the moment.
+ChrisRyanGolf - Thanks again Chris!

Same with the driver?
Close the right kua, open the left kua.

Thank you !
Easier said than done!
It’s hard being 532 lbs to shift my weight without break an ankle. It’s hard being so soft
Great video but I really felt like I was watching an old Godzilla movie though with that audio being off by like 5 seconds lol
