Ao means both blue and green in japanese, so if the translator didn't have access to the pictures, they had to guess the context.
Monkeys with rifles sounds like a dr. Seuss book. "Ooh Ooh Aah Aah, the monkeys say, but take one more step and you'll be in pain."
"Don't mess with that monkey, if you make it out alive, you're very lucky."
The “dinosaur bones are not real” may have been referencing the fact that most fossil displays don’t use actual bones, but castes that look identical to real fossils. That was my interpretation anyway.
Absolutely agree that's what they were going for, just wish perhaps they were a bit more familiar with the intention of them being real for story purposes.
Dinosaur aren't real. Science is gay.
Dinosaurs don’t exist in Earthbound either
to be fair not a single real life fossil display use actual bones anyway since yknow bones degrade over time. fossils are traces of the animal not the actual animal itself
@@dh2890Well, they do, but they sure as hell ain't extinct
The receptionist at the dinosaur museum says, "The Dinosaur Museum doesn't have any real dinosaurs... They're all replicas."
It's not something the guide made up. Just a small, easily-forgettable line from the actual game!
Looked into this, and you're right! Don't know where I got my information from! Think there's an NPC somewhere in the game that says something about selling real dinosaur bones on the black market or something and just conflated them.
This is probably the only line I fully remember from the game
The fact that Ness had so much more HP in the second screenshot in stonehedge base was really surprising to me, because It kind of hints that they were grinding for the sword of kings, while when they showed the gutsy bat in Magicant it was clearly obtained via the debug menu. Guess it was just there to make it look more legit or something.
It's just a generic 5-pointed star.
Kids are taught to draw stars exactly like this, there's nothing strange about it.
Of course, I even say I know for certain it's totally unintentional, but the context of when it was released changes that perception.
And another fact about the pentagram and the east. It originated in China as a protection symbol rather than a satanic icon. It was used in the early church as the star of David but was quickly removed for the cross instead
@@etherealbladerx8153 not only the star of David, but it is representational of the five wounds christ received, being the hands, feet, crown, lance and lashings.
It also needs to be in a circle to be a proper pentacle, which was also used as a symbol in many pre Christian things like tarot and iirc wicca
@@eeveefan Wicca is a modern invention by Richard Gardner. Pentagrams and pentacles were both used by royalty and other religious systems besides Satanism, though.
I know page 95 is already great enough, but I'm extremely disappointed you didn't mention the exact count of 4,000,603 mosquitoes.
Just didn't have any funny observation to make about it, very much noticed it though!
The series, especially Earthbound, is so near and dear to me. This was so refreshing and like younger days when this guide came with me everywhere so I could just explore every inch of every page, lol. Thanks for posting this 😃!
15:29 I like when you can use the screenshots in strategy guides to glean weird details about the playstyle of whoever took them, like for example in the nintendo power guide for paper mario ttyd they're using flurrie at almost every possible opportunity
I think "after cracking kraken" was just an alliterative way of saying after defeating the kraken🐍
Reminds me of prima’s officially strategy guide for perfect dark and how it would say something like “dispatch the dataDyne shock troopers and head to the terminal for your next objective” instead of “kill them”
Absolutely. This installment of the series is definitely me at my most nitpicky-est. Just sounded odd to me, so I pointed it out.
@@MonkeyNess It's just some word play.
Because when you read "cracking Kraken" out loud, the two words sound similar to each other.
That's a given, they should have said Cracking THE Kraken. It's just some silly word play, no clue why it's so weird to people lol
If you ever feel useless, just remember that Poo’s Mirror ability is a thing that exists
I giggled and chuckled at the other stuff BUT THAT HUNTING ONE FROM DEEP DARKNESS BROKE ME HOLY 5H!T
The "manhole room' in the Fourside Museum was apparently done due to it being difficult to animate the manhole coming off. It was revealed in a dev cartridge of Mother 2 when localizing the game.
Interesting! Source? Would love to see this!

I always imagined the Sword of Kings looking like a katana.
Same here!
😂 I lost it at the picture of the parrot. It's a great picture, of course, but your delivery was perfect for me.

“Monkeys that can beat me up are awesome.”
- MonkeyNess, 2022
I think I just found a new favourite youtuber!
Dozed off near the end of the video and got absolutely jumpscared by the music at the end
For the pentagram thing, it makes me think of that one video of a guy saying Pokémon is satanic lol
I ❤ how eclectic the official 🌏 Earthbound guide is. Also, all hail the 🐽 pig nose!
"Monkeys with guns confirmed in EarthBound!!" Good thing Ness and Jeff didn't attack those annoying monkeys in the monkey cave...
The title is a bit weird and almost clickbaity (I had no idea this was part 3 of the players guide when clicking) but good video for a good series.
Onett is a really small town. I'd say it probably counts as a village.
Just a jarring term to me in the realm of EarthBound, where everything is a town or city, as I relate "village" to more traditional RPG settings.
I too like all the Deep Darkness wordplaying. 'National Rifles for Animals' is probably a play on the NRA (National Rifle Association). It's a little funny that the Ku Klux Klan got censored but not this.
PK Flash is good on the Kraken? I use Mirror because it pretty much always works on him. Also you can imagine this badass fight with Kraken and Poo Kraken dueling each other in the sea as the other 3 provide backup.
10:27 What's weird about this to me is:
A) Assuming you just entered Deep Darkness for the first time, which I assume is when you're meant to read this page, Poo isn't back in the party by this point.
B) Again assuming you just entered Deep Darkness for the first time, the Sword of Kings is only obtainable in Stonehenge Base which requires crossing Deep Darkness at least once, because entering Tenda Village at the end of Deep Darkness and talking to the Tenda leader is what triggers the story event that allows the player to get the Eraser Eraser and enter Stonehenge Base in the first place (not counting that entrance before the eraser statue).
EARTHBOUND CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT!
Poo *does* reciprocate one of the girls affections in the Japanese version, where instead of playing patty-cake with one girls after a "YES" prompt, he does… something else.
im pretty sure it’s the girl who does it
@@PrincePoo ok "Prince Poo" i surely believe you 💀
Am I the only one who noticed the rise in Earthbound content and references after the virutal console realise this year?
14:30 Yeah I believe blue and green are seen as variants of the same colour in japan
4:14 what a freaking bumb
The Satan version is the other way around. Two horns up? It's just a star
I love me some semi-bald guys with ponytails
Cracking kraken could just be another way of saying, defeating kraken, rather than it implying that that’s it’s name. I would have probably written it as, “after crushing the Kraken,” To avoid confusion.
That’s all I was saying.
Cracking the Kraken is perfcet because of the word play. Would have made the most sense to say "After cracking THE Kraken"
I'm subbing at this point
It was likely subtle enough to slip past the censors, and in the 90’s they were notorious
Better a 5 pointed star than a 6 pointed star I always say
You should make a monkeyness players guide
here you go
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey
Sorry, but the Bad Key Machine's artwork is far more funny than the Parrot Phone for me-
Doesn't negate the Parrot's funniness tho- ^^
It's a star.
Finally. A Cybershell for Earthbound
(Separately, he’s actually streamed this whole game, but you know what I mean. You know what I mean.)
the models are made from paper mache so the hieroglyph is probably a flat cut-out
Turns out this isn’t quite true! We discovered in the last few weeks that they’re actually paper clay!
It's a star..
I can't tell you how many hours I spent killing Bionic Kraken, trying to get the Legendary Bat.
Well you would have never gotten it. It drops the Gutsy Bat, not the Legendary Bat lol. You get the Legendary Bat in a gift box.
@@DlCKWALLACE oh, haha you're right! Yes, I meant to say the gutsy bat, and I meant to say Kraken.
The player guide erroneously claims you get the gutsy bat from Kraken in the Sea of Eden. I would kill the three Kraken, then reset and be forced to traverse all the way through Magicant each time.
Then, years later I learned that those monsters don't even drop the Gutsy Bat.. 😭
@@Eyes0penNoFear Oh bro I did the same thing. I was so mad when I found out it was actually dropped by the Bionic Kraken. I thought it was kind of lame anyway, that you get Ness's ultimate weapon at the end of the game where you don't even get to enjoy it.
@@DlCKWALLACE totally agree. I should be able to smack some crows all the way to Fourside if I want.
It's actually the only item I never succeeded in getting in the entire game.
Maybe some day 🤷
« l’hotel du summers » literally translates to « the hotel of the summers » x)
yes im french
To say the truth this siries of videos grow old very fast
Sorry to hear you don't enjoy them! Luckily I post a variety of other types of videos in between episodes of this miniseries :)
Just a pro tip: Not everyone reads descriptions. You might want to have been more clear in the title that this is part 3 of your player's guide tribute; I thought you abandoned that series until someone replied to a comment I left.
Yeah, I was the one who replied.
@@MonkeyNess Okay, I failed to connect the dots there.
Nice
If you sleep enough in the game then the dates can make sense lol
0:27 Whoa I noticed you called it "O" nett (when previously you called it "One" ett) which I had always called it the former but realized when you previously had said "One" it had never clicked that's how pronounce it (although it was a hard pill to swallow since, I'd literally called it "O"-nett since I was a kid) but if you don't mind me asking did you mean to say it that way this time or was that a slip or did you find out more info on how to pronounce it? Sorry I know this sounds so trival and silly it's just something I've been wondering since I first watched your videos (and other EB youtubers who also have various ways of pronouncing it!)
I was loyal to the "One-ette" pronunciation for a long time, but did some research and found "Oh-nette" is the official pronunciation.
There's all kinds of pictures of character's clay models throughout the guide. Why does the Kraken's seem weird to you and none of the other clay models?
It’s not that it’s clay that’s weird to me. It’s that the image depicting it in the newspaper just has some gray background like in universe the photo is of a clay model which is weird to me, like, why not just paste in an ocean background to better integrate it?
@@MonkeyNess Ah ok I understand. Yea with some of the detail they put in the other "realistic" photos they could have done that easily.
Honestly Nintendo probably approved the pentagram path by the sphynx because there was never a Satanic Panic in Japan. It's like how they still don't mind using swastikas because to them it's still a symbol of Indian Religion and not the Nazi symbol.
This was all approved by Nintendo of America. Japan had a completely different guide.
@@MonkeyNess Damn, well that's surprise. I can only imagine they either didn't notice, and it flew right over their heads. Or possibly just thought "Ooohh it's a star, clever!" Lol
I
I am very dissapointed at your implication that baby monkeys are not awesome
Baby monkeys could still definitely beat me up
The pentagram/star isn’t even centered….
Um the upright pentagram isn't a Satanism symbol, that's the Pagan Star. And in Islam the pentagram refers to the 5 Pillars of Islam which is why it's still on the Moroccan flag today. Only upside-down pentagrams are satanism symbols just like the upside-down cross is. And the only reason it's referred to as a satanism symbol when upside-down is because flipping any religious symbol upside-down is considered something only Satanists do. In a lot of western cartoons upright pentagrams are used to refer to evil or satanism but this is just a common misunderstanding from western writers and artists that haven't studied theology in the east.
Okay
hey not to be rude, but do you kin murrit? /genq
7:24 what makes you think it's an ocean?? it's small and narrow and when you get to land it's still the same continent, I knew it was a river from playing so I don't know what you're talking about
Based on the “Map of the World of Mother 2” image.
Well that image doesn't actually tell you where Deep Darkness is, and I think it's still in Chommo (wiki agrees with me)
The continent of "Chommo" is clearly a parallel to Africa (Or Africa and Asia if Dalham is in Chommo too I'm not sure), Scaraba beaing in North Africa or a parallel to Egypt to be precise, what would be south to it? Well Central Africa is full of swamps and rainforest that would be a good parallel to Deep Darkness and the Nile River is loosely in the area between the two.
Another clue is that mass of water is smaller than the journey in boat between Summers and Scaraba, and seeing refered to as a river somewhere else just makes me more confident that it is indeed a river in Chommo, not an entire ocean.
@@spacesandwich5593 To each their own. The way it’s portrayed does not make it apparently clear it’s a “river” to me.
@@spacesandwich5593 It's implied as a swamp. Rivers flow, the Deep Darkness doesn't. It's not implied it's a river at all.
Why are people STILL saying Onett wrong?
“Oh-net” is the official pronunciation.
@@MonkeyNess Where did you hear that?
@@moderndayentertainer.9516 That’s the Japanese pronunciation Itoi says himself, doesn’t get much more official than that. This coming from a recently-loyal “One-ett” pronunciation proprietor.
