    Fun fact: on the box art, Ness isn't inside the Starman, but is in fact Ness' reflection on the Starman's lens, implying that you the player are an extention of Ness

      the only thing is, that's an endgame enemy you encounter in the cave of the past, in which Ness and his friends are in robot bodies, so technically there's no way Ness's face could ever be reflected in the visor in-universe

    1:37 The most likely reason your brain smoothed over the pointed feet, is that only the "prickly" Starman sprite has them, with the normal Starman Sprite having the round feet you remember. This leads to a massive imbalance with the Starman Junior, Starman, Starman Super, and Ghost of Starman all having round feet, while only the Starman Deluxe and Final Starman have the pointy ones. The only other differences are minor changes to the visor (which was probably a mistake, the spikey parts on their shoulders and head, and their badges are a different color being red instead of black (with the exception of the Ghost of Starman but that's because of the non-standard palette it uses), although you probably already knew those.

    When it comes to the police-men seen within the stock photos at 12:46, you are 100% correct with them not being American. Based on their uniform, and the striking headwear, they couldn't be misconstrued as anything other than British officers. The pith helmet they wear with the officers mark on gives it one of the most defined looks for any police officer, so much it is equally known as a bobby helmet.
    If I were to guess the nationality of the horse mounted police-men I would gander that they were German, or French. I reason this based off the smooth rimed officers cap which is used in some areas, along with the button up jacket and under shirt which both used in areas. Though they are harder to get a definitive statement on.
    Either way thanks for the rad video, while I never owned a copy of it I've read through it via the power of digital archives, tons of cool stuff in there. Keep up the good work, and have a nice day.

    My favorite part about this strategy was how it was also written like a travel guide to all the places you'd go. I really wish more strategy guides were written like this, especially most guides at this point are collectors' items. It would actually incentive me to start collecting strategy guides again, which is a hobby I sort of miss. They just don't make them like they used to anymore

    • @MonkeyNess
      @MonkeyNess  2 года назад

      I just wish they were more stylized overall. I don’t think every one should look like EarthBound’s, as its stylization is tailored to its modern-day setting. I do agree with you that many could benefit from more artistic expression within them. :)

    • @Morgil27
      @Morgil27 8 месяцев назад

      @MonkeyNess From my experience, it was usually the ones published by Nintendo Power that had the more stylized writing, while third-party guides were usually a lot more bland and boring.

    I've only ever flipped through the official strategy guide--I've never actually played through the game with it so this was a really cool look at a classic companion piece to EarthBound (or apparently Earthbound if you prefer, lol).
    I love the details you chose to elaborate on, like the "Pak of bubble gum" likely being a reference to Nintendo's Game Paks, and the choice to display Poo's name in a brown font lmao.
    Hearing about all the inconsistencies is great too, it's neat to see screenshots with beta elements not present in the final version. Despite the book's mistakes, I'm glad there is still valuable information to be found here; I did not know that the Happy Happy Cultists you can interact with move slightly quicker on the overworld than the others either!
    My favorite funny thing about this guide is the fact that the Happy Happyist Japanese design is shown instead of the American redesign like you said, but for whatever reason they chose to use a white dot to censor the "HH" on its forehead instead of a dot that matched the color of its robe...
    I would absolutely watch a second part to this, keep up the fantastic work!

    "When the two young heroes returned to Twoson, there was great rejoicing." feels like a nod to Monty Python. The usage of British / European looking police officers might also be a nod to Monty Python, as they frequently used similar looking police officers in various sketches.
    All in all, the book is fantastic. For the longest time, I just assumed that the book was just a ploy to justify the consumer paying more for the game, but as it turns out, it actually seems to be genuinely geally great supplement to the game and its lore.
    Like you, I really like that they flesh out Ness's personality a bit, as - quite frankly - he doesn't have much of one in the game.
    The newspaper articles and tour guide descriptions of the towns and other locations add so many new layers of the charm to an already charming world / setting.
    And you can just tell from reading it that the persons tasked with writing it weren't just corporate hacks who never actually played the game and who were forced to write quick and dirty cash grab game guide at the request of Nintendo - the authors clearly played the game quite a bit and seemed to be genuinely into the game. It feels like a labor of love.
    It's also interesting because it's obvious that the people who came up with the guide were given unfinished versions of the game - presumably so that the guide could be finished in time to be packaged in with the game, as intended. The fact that they were likely playing the game at different stages of development / localization would probably account for some of the odd names / descriptions (eg Jail Key, [The] Starman Jr, Butterflies healing all PP, etc) and the various screenshots which appear to be closer in appearance to that of Japanese build of the game (eg the in-game red cross symbol on the nurse).
    I mean, they almost assuredly had very little time to address any changes in a localization effort that I imagine was in a state of near constant flux, and was therefore being adjusted and tweaked right up to when the game was ready to go to production. These snapshots into the game and its state at thr time of any given section's descriptions and screen shots are quite fascinating, I think.
    Looking back on it now, the guide almost seems like a proto-"special collector's edition" type of gift to fans who pre-order a game, long before that was a thing - with the only difference being that with EarthBound, everyone had no choice but to get the more expensive special edition. Probably not the best move in retrospect, but having different tiers of games with officially sanctioned pre-order bonuses were pretty rare or even largely unheard of at the time, so perhaps this one time, it can be excused. And with the guide being so well written and everything, it's hard to even be mad about it.
    And you should definitely do a part two. I won't even read the rest of the book so that I can be more surprised by its revelations should you ever do follow up haha.

    I think them saying that Ness was dreaming about cookies and birthday presents at the beginning of the game is a nod to Ness’s birthday coming up after the events of the game, since at the end of the game Ness’s dad mentions him trying to come home before his birthday. I think that was pretty neat thing they added in if that was intentional.

    I find it cool that because IQ increases max PP on level up for every character EXCEPT Jeff, he instead uses that stat to determine the chance of repairing items that can be at times just as powerful as a PSI attack (Big Bottle Rocket). I think it's a great design choice that fits the character since he is in universe a very intelligent kid, as is reflected in his IQ stat.

    I wonder if there's a proto type of the English translation that exists, because from the looks of it this guide uses a copy of the game with English text but with the Japanese sprites for the most part, and a lot of the wrong names for things in this guide book could be explained by an earlier translation that was changed here and there before the game was put on shelves.
