Melvin Harris i am planning to buy a secondhand macbook pro mid 2010 that was already upgraded to 8gb of ram, 256ssd. Do you think its okay for me to buy? I am student and only do lightwork( assignments, web browsing)
Wow. I'm legitimately surprised that u only have 18 subs. I like your editing style and I like how you are so professional about this. Good luck and keep up the good work man. 👍👍👍
I have the 13 inch 2010 Macbook Pro and I thought about upgrading to the cheapest current model which is $1,300, but instead I decided to spend about $300 to breathe some new life into my 2010 model. A few weeks ago I replaced the original hdd (with a larger ssd), upgraded RAM from 4 to 8gb, and replaced the battery since it was dying quickly, and got a backup charger since mine is slowly breaking, but still works. The SSD made a HUGE difference in speed, the RAM has helped especially with having multiple tabs and apps open, the new battery lasts as long as the first one did 10 years ago. Just like new! And with the extra $1000, I built a 2nd gaming PC!
This laptop is definitely a great budget MacBook pro for students. As long as you realistic expectations, this laptop is great. I use mine for web browsing and word.
Great video! I've just bought a 15-inch 2010 Macbook Pro for about $350. The buyer listed it as having a kernel panic problem after booting. Hopefully an SMC reset and a fresh OS install should fix that though! Cheers
I have a 2010 15-inch MBP, and it also suffered from kernel panic starting around 2015. I had to send it in to Apple because this model was recalled for the video card, causing the kernel panic. I never knew about the recall, and I didn't get it fixed before. The previous user of your MBP probably didn't know about this, too. The fresh OS install wouldn't have fixed that.
This video was amazing! I should really say I'm excited by just watching it, me and my girlfriend are planning to buy one of them and by watching this I'm really excited to buy it and give a new life! :D Cheers from Colombia, keep it up!
im ended mine from the macOS Mavericks to Sierra and High Sierra..The last upgrade I made is the Catalina Patcher that runs well and highly in 64-bits leaving the 32-bit behind..so far, it supports latest and continues to runs more years to come even it is unsupported for my Macbook Mid 2010.
I found a 2010 MacBook Pro in the garbage left out for any passer by to see and take. Now it’s 2022 is it worth getting it upgraded? I’m like on the fence on this decision. I’m ahead of the game I’m not paying for it so having it upgraded is less costly but this MBP is a dinosaur now too? Any 💭 thoughts?
I have a 2010 as well. Just recently did the same upgrade as you. Glad to see our performance is similar. Just wondering if I should have gone for the 16 gigs of RAM. Also I plan on taking out the SuperDrive and installing a secondary SSD, and go with a Raid 0 configuration. That should improve performance further.
Where did you get the blue case on the front of your Macbook pro? All I can find is cheap amazon plastic cases that aren't very effective. Can anyone recommend a decent case that's still available for a computer of this age?
Great Video, I have the same laptop, I would have added a link to the upgrade parts you put in. I'm already running 8gb, but Mac forums say it can support 16gb. I couldnt find a SSD that supported this laptop. If you can drop a link to the parts, I would appreciate it.
Im considering getting a macbook pro for school since im going for graphic, design. My teacher recommended a macbook pro. Will this run photoshop well? And how, much did the upgrades cost? Is it worth it to buy one for $200 and upgrade or better to just buy a newer model?
Hello Jason sir . I'm using now MacBook Pro 2010 mid model i7 processor 1tb ssd 8gb ram .......but it's running slowly .....shall I upgrade my 8 GB to 16gb ????
Mi mac book pro 2010 15" died last year, apparently was a power issue, damaged the hard drive and the charger. I got it fixed but the technician said he couldn't get the upgrade on the ram memory. Do you think is worth it to try on my own the upgrade of the ram? Also how can I check the battery?
Hey, I know this video is 2 years old but I am wanting to do some upgrades on my MacBook Pro 15inch 2010 MacBook Pro. It has Intel Core i5. I have already upgraded the Hard Disk to an SSD but what can I do for RAM? I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out. Also, if you know of any Bluetooth upgrades for the 15inch Mid-2010 MacBook Pro that'd be great as I've had great difficulty sourcing an upgrade. Thanks.
How to transfer the old disk data with the O.S. to the new SSD? Did you leave it out that in the video? A lot of people watch this video not knowing until they do what you have done and the system will not boot up. :) Thanks!
What I do is I back my my old OS to an external hard drive with Time Machine. After switching the hard drives, I restore my time machine backup after booting into recovery mode (boot while holding cmd+R)
what is the feasiblity of this laptop in upcoming 3 4 years? can i use this laptop for development in upcoming 3 4 years? any one have experience in using high sieera please share experience. i want to buy it for xcode.
I’m new to this whole computer thing so my question is . Since I updated my macbookpro13” 2010 version to the current iOS which is 2020 now , if I update ssd and ram and battery will I have a problem with updating again to the current iOS ?
I ordered mine from Slickwraps. I recommend buying one whenever there is a sale. Here's the link below: www.slickwraps.com/carbon-fiber-series-wraps-skins-for-macbook-pro-13.html
Macbookpro 2010 17pouces 2,5ghz i5 8go ram double carte graphique 1TB mémoire what do you think of it and what about upgrading to SSD and ddr 3 !! thanks in advanced
Hi Jason, it's been so helpful to upgrade my laptop. Again, thank you for your video. i have 275 gb SSD and 8 gb ram. I downloaded adobe premiere pro CC and export 40 minutes video (not 4k) and it took over 2 hours. Is it normal? what do you use for video editing? any suggestions?
I normally use Davinci Resolve 12.5 for my video editing and it can be found on the Appstore (or on their website). For rendering, I use my desktop because it has a faster CPU and GPU. I think the reason for the 2 hour export time is because of the slower Core 2 Duo processor in the 2010 Macbook. Currently I don't know if there's a way to further improve the performance for the Macbook.
I see. Thank you very much for your quick response. It sounds like I may need a new laptop with a faster CPU and GPU for video editing? what specs should I consider when I look for new laptop that I can edit 4K? Did you change the battery for your mac? if so, which product did you use? I thought I wouldn't need to change the battery. But it last less than a couple of hours without a charger.
I would recommend a laptop that has a discrete GPU (Nvidia graphics card) if possible and at least 8gb of ram if you're going to be editing in 4K. I didn't change the battery in my mac but it would have been a good idea because I usually don't get more than 4 hours of use before I need to plug it in. I would suggest buying a replacement battery from Amazon that has reliable reviews if you decide to continue using your mac.
Hi Jason, I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, mid 2010) with 2.66 Ghz intel Core 2 Due and 4 GB memory. What would be your recommended upgrade option be? I am planning to do it on my own so any recommended sites or brands will be really great to know. thanks
Abhijeet Roy I would recommend a 250gb Samsung or 240gb SanDisk SSD. They perform well. This should be enough storage for a while. For ram I would recommend 8gb or 16gb of Crucial 1066 mt/s RAM depending on your needs. You should be able to order these parts from Amazon. Here's a link for the 8gb of RAM. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008LTBJFM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1506515716&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=crucial+1066&dpPl=1&dpID=51S%2BBil3u3L&ref=plSrch

Hi im Ahia from PH , i have question do i need to format first the laptop before i install the new ssd and ddr3 memory?, And it is advisable to upgrade the ram upto 16gb of ram? or just for 8gb ram? thanks for advance response,
No. You do not need to format the laptop before installing, but you will need a bootable flash drive (there are videos on RUclips on how to create one) or a time machine backup to restore from once you've installed the new SSD. Personally, I didn't upgrade to 16gb of ram because I wouldnt have a use for it.
Fiqi sulthan Personally I wouldn't use this laptop for video editing because of its older processor but it handles web browsing well. If there are other options that have better processors, I would recommend those instead.
Fiqi sulthan I would recommend upgrading to an SSD first because it improves the overall speed of the laptop. To do this you would need to prepare a bootable flash drive (there are tutorials) or restore from a Time Machine backup after the SSD is installed.
Jeremy Balsters Yes, you would. Before I replaced the original I drive, I created a "Time Machine" backup on an external drive. I did this so I could keep my data. If you want a fresh copy of OS X, you would need to create a bootable flash drive (there are tutorials on how to make one). Once I installed the SSD I booted into settings and restored from the newly created backup.
ItsThatHydraKid I don't think the computer could use an elgato well because even though it has 8gb of RAM, the cpu is only a core 2 duo. I would recommend using a Windows machine also because the elgato software is up to date for them.
I would recommend the HP Pavilion 15 or the Dell Inspiron 5000. Although they don't have discrete GPUs (Nvidia), there are several configurations that can include 1080p screens and SSDs as well as 8gb of RAM.
Anyone watching this.. this model of this MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) (Model Identifier: MacBookPro7,1) maxes out at 16 GB RAM, not 8 GB! Apple says it maxes out at 8 GB, but they are wrong, it actually maxes out at 16 GB! I bought one last week as a backup MacBook and through research discovered this... Crucial are not hip to this, but OWC are! eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/8566DDR3S16P/ Proof! I upgraded mine. i.imgur.com/UIb7mWm.png One thing I will say however is even after maxing out the RAM (16 GB) and installing an SSD the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor really holds back this computer... even at 2.4 GHz this MacBook Pro is only really only good as a daily driver, not as a "pro" computer... doing pro tasks this thing lags behind. My MacBook Air 11" from 2012 w/ a 1.7GHz i5 and 4 GB of RAM is faster at most tasks
That's exactly what i was thinking. On the website Apple clearly mentions it only supports upto 8gb. Maybe when they say 8gb they were referring to one single slot?
rockboyjazz Apple have down this before. If you get the MacTracker app you'll see a history of them doing this.. look up this computer you'll see "Apple" and "Actual" under memory sizes
Who else is watching this on a 2010 MacBook Pro?
PS: i also have an ssd upgrade. BTW, by 45 second boot on the old hard drive, don't you mean 45 MINUTE?
literally it tooks around 45 min. damm.. i upgraded tomorrow and now i want to go back..😫

I have the same and perfect model from early 2010. But, I put 16GB of RAM and SSD 240GB. Run fast and actually.
The 16GB Ram works? What kind of RAM did you use? Crucial? Corsair?
I couldn’t get 2 8gb cards to work. I’m not savvy at all though so I may have been wrong.
Used 2x 8gb 1066 ghz ram

Might be a dumb question but when you installed the new ssd did you have to reinstall macOS? If so how’d you do that?
the 15in model is definitely still viable. 8gb of ram, old gen i7, and a 500gb ssd.
Great vid mate. How is the battery life after the upgrades? Do you find it goes dead a lot quicker or is there no change?

Hi Thank you for your video. I upgraded mine too. The USB ports are USB 2.0. All my portable SSDs and HDs are USB 3.0. Any suggestions to use them with this MacPro? Using USB 3.0 in 2.0 slows down the speed..?
Ina Chung Using USB 3.0 devices with 2.0 ports will slow down their speeds. So far I haven't found a workaround and have just been accepting the slower speeds.
Hi im Ahia from PH ,
i have question do i need to format first the laptop before i install the new ssd and ddr3 memory?,
And it is advisable to upgrade the ram upto 16gb of ram? or just for 8gb ram? thanks for advance response,
No. You do not need to format the laptop before installing, but you will need a bootable flash drive (there are videos on RUclips on how to create one) or a time machine backup to restore from once you've installed the new SSD. Personally, I didn't upgrade to 16gb of ram because I wouldnt have a use for it.
Hi, i am from indonesia, and i want to bought this thing for my college and video editing. Did u recommend it? Thanks
Fiqi sulthan Personally I wouldn't use this laptop for video editing because of its older processor but it handles web browsing well. If there are other options that have better processors, I would recommend those instead.
how about working on microsoft word or something like that?
Fiqi sulthan Yes, I actually use microsoft word often when I have to take notes. It works well and doesn't use too much battery.
If i got this thing, what should I upgrade first, ssd or ram?. Because i saw people that upgrading the ssd and ram they got a problems
Fiqi sulthan I would recommend upgrading to an SSD first because it improves the overall speed of the laptop. To do this you would need to prepare a bootable flash drive (there are tutorials) or restore from a Time Machine backup after the SSD is installed.

I would recommend getting a 2010 Macbook with an i5 processor so it will perform better.
Wouldn't you have to re install the OS onto the new drive? just asking because I'm doing the same..
Jason Summers oh how much was everything?
Jeremy Balsters The SSD was around $90 and the ram was about $40.

One thing I will say however is even after maxing out the RAM (16 GB) and installing an SSD the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor really holds back this computer... even at 2.4 GHz this MacBook Pro is only really only good as a daily driver, not as a "pro" computer... doing pro tasks this thing lags behind. My MacBook Air 11" from 2012 w/ a 1.7GHz i5 and 4 GB of RAM is faster at most tasks
I was just wondering, who needs 16 GB of ram?
Lame
Us, the lame
That's exactly what i was thinking. On the website Apple clearly mentions it only supports upto 8gb. Maybe when they say 8gb they were referring to one single slot?
rockboyjazz Apple have down this before. If you get the MacTracker app you'll see a history of them doing this.. look up this computer you'll see "Apple" and "Actual" under memory sizes
Is this support to 16 GB RAM?
Only the Core 2 Duo model can support 16gb of DDR3 1066 MT/s ram
".....and 2 cover up the scratches and dents"
Cool...

What happens to all your old stuff when you replace the hard drive? [for those of us who are idiots and need everything explained haha]
I assume you just copy it to the new hard drive.
Please don't follow this video, you will be stuck with an unusable system.
