  • COMPONENTS USED ARE LISTED BELOW
    Samsung 830 Series SSD - amzn.to/TvgQmT
    Corsair 16GB DDR3 RAM - amzn.to/12Mo7Ua
    Optical Drive Bay Adapter - amzn.to/U78XE7
    This video was shot during a recent Macbook Pro Upgrade. The video displays a 13-inch non-retina Macbook Pro but the process will be very similar for the 15-inch non-retina Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro in this video is the latest, 2012 model but the process should be the same for older, unibody, non-retina Macbook Pros. The 2010 Macbook Pro & 2011 Macbook Pro share the same body type.
    I'm still a big fan of the non-retina Macbook Pro models because they offer user upgrades unlike the retina Macbook Pro. In this video you'll see an SSD upgrade, RAM upgrade & optical drive bay adapter installation.
    For full pictures & upgrade instructions for the Macbook Pro visit this page & use it in conjunction with my video - bit.ly/TnWFZe

    I recommend doing what Lou did, but in opposite hard drive placement. Put your max performance SSD on your main bay and your HDD in your optical bay. I heard that the optical bay is only 3Gb/s, compared to the main bay, which is 6Gb/s link speed. Cheers! Happy upgrading!

      Thanks for the tip. Can you still boot up your OS with HDD being at optical drive, and just clone everything to the SSD once it's booted, or you would have to install the OS on SSD first (from USB stick or Wi-Fi) ?

    • @burlapse4113
      @burlapse4113 4 года назад

      @@vladimirradosevic3749 You should be fine to boot from the optical drive bay, it will just be half the speed as mentioned.

    Look in your system profiler, navigate to the specified interface & check the link speed. For this model it reads 6 Gigabit in both bays.

      the SSD will improve performance significantly. your boot time will be cut in half. I bought a $35 60gb ssd at fry's and that's the performance increase I got. the white macbook is harder to take apart but if you are patient and smart you can do it. you don't need the latest ssd since the Sata 150 bus wont appreciate a Samsung evo.

  • @JoTribe
    @JoTribe 11 лет назад

    Yes exactly. Plus, i think it's better to put the SSD in the original disk place and to put the HD in the optical bay adapter. It's related to the negotiated speed between the MB and the SSD (in the optical bay adapter) that makes it only Sata 2 speed and limits the SSD performance.

My current OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD as my main drive should get 6Gb/s=750MB/s.. but it's currently way less than that.. currently getting 245MB/s write and 413MB/s Read..

    Hey man, If your looking for the awesome speed of the SSD (as anyone is that uses a SSD) You may want to put it where the original HDD is. This is because the SATA controller the original HDD uses has speed capabilities of 6GB/s whereas the SATA controller you are using on the adapter from the ODD only has a max speed of 3GB/s. Though its not a huge loss its still a different. All in all I would just swap the drive locations. P.S. I have the same SSD, AMAZING w/ 16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM!

    I'm leaning toward this route. Yes, I'd love to have a retina display MacBook pro 13 but the ability to insert 16gigs of ram and an SSD in place of the optical drive I'd never use seems so much more practical and long term to me than to be stuck with 8gigs of ram and a 128 gig hard drive. Though you could get an external hard drive I would rather not have to carry that around with me, too. Think I'll run with this machine.

    The speed would be the same since both of them are SATA III. You should keep the HDD in the hard drive spot because it has the motion sensor technology to save your hard drive's data in case you drop your MacBook and that security for the HDD isnt provided by the optical bay. The SSD does not need this the sensor.

    I put my optical drive in an adapter like that and my mac won't write anything to a disc except shortcuts. Any ideas why?
    I think it's because the hardware wasn't meant for the bay or it's somehow different from the USB ones sold in the store. I can read discs from it, but it barely even acknowledges a blank disc or gives me the option to write to it.

    Does anyone know if the ntel 530 Series SSDSC2BW120A4K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) will work with the provided caddy? just want to make sure nothing will bounce around.

    In theory, it would work, however it is good practice to install RAM in pairs, so if you want 8GB, use 2X4GB, if you want 16GB, use 2X8GB.
    Will it work?
    Most likely yes.
    Should you do it?
    No, instead spend the extra money, get the 16GB kit, or opt for 8GB instead.

    If I bought 1600mhz ram but it says compatible with 1333mhz... Is this okay? I have a late 2011 MBP and the updated Yosemite OS X.

    Hi I have a question: If instead HDD was put at the optical drive area, and SSD in the main drive area can you still boot up your OS with HDD being at optical drive, and just clone everything to the SSD once it's booted, or you would have to install the OS on SSD first (from USB stick or Wi-Fi) ? Thanks in advance

    Cool! I don't use the optical drive so this is perfect for me and I don't have to give up storage space.

    That's what I got was the pro. It loads programs SO much faster. I'm about to try playing a game to see what that does.

    Make sure ur ribbon cable is connected properly. And also what drive are u using. Apples macs don't play nice with some drives (ocz). Try getting a return if you can
    If you want maximum compatibility (most drives do. But the ones I list are the best choices) pay the premium and get the m4 from crucial or the intel 520

    The difference is, one is hard disk drive(HDD) and the other one is solid state drive (SSD). He kept that on purpose because it is the one that holds the OS(Mac OSX) to run the mac afterwards and may provide extra storage from inside your device in future. Hope i helped you.

    An external Sata dock if you aren't gonna keep your original HDD, if you are, then boot to your HDD, clone your files to the SSD, then boot from the SSD. Hope that helped

    just google update macbook pro in google. the apple website sets out specific requirements for each macbook pro. and you have to match it to their requirements. a 2011 mbp 13" for example can only take up to 8Gb or RAM. 1333 MHz is what they stipulate as well. also its a 204pin connection.
