    Many thanks! The DVD drive in my ageing MacBook Pro died many years ago and the option of replacing this with an SSD sounds great. I already have a couple of spare SSD drives and, since seeing your video, I have ordered a 'caddy' from eBay - which I found for less than a fiver!

    I have a Macbook Pro mid 2012. I just want to replace my optical drive with SSD and keep my old HDD on its place.
    1. Will it effect a better performance to my Mac?
    2. Should I clone my OS to the new SSD or is there any particular way to do it?

    i replaced my optical drive and all was working well. The 2011 Macbook pro wen back to Apple store for a new mother board due to warranty/recall on the graphic card. Now it does not recognize the drive. I have checked all contacts and all seems in order. Any suggestions. Disc utilities does not see it. I also have data on the drive I do not want to lose. I can take the drive out and use a usb cable to mount the drive, but I still want to get this working as it is intended inside the computer.

      Rob Giordano Yes, I'd recommend removing the battery first, it's still connected to the motherboard and something might happen there

    • @Chrismanningdrums
      @Chrismanningdrums 3 года назад +2

      Unplugging the battery would really only be an issue if disconnecting system operating components. The sata sockets and power rail connecting through peripheral devices are still going to need to flash through a regular boot cycle anyway, and on a side note, even with no battery connected, there is always potential with mac book laptops that static electricity will ground through the chassis even if you are bare foot touching a surface. I replaced my main drive with an additional battery and and my main drive is in the superdrive bay.

    thanks, very nice video. I just got a new SSD internal hard drive for my MacBook pro mid 2010 and also got a Doubler Caddy (which is pretty much look like yours in this video) to replace the CD drive with my old HD drive. The SSD replacement went well but to place the HD drive into the Doubler Caddy the latter has some extra connection part which stays out when I place the HD. What I mean is this: when I place the HD drive, it sits well there but there is an extra part (like extra connection port which need some extra connection form the HD to match there) there is nothing from the HD drive to be there. Anyway, I followed your instruction but the HDD drive does not appear in my mac anymore. Any help with that? thx

    Very nice video. A wonderful guide indeed. I have done the same procedure with my macbook pro except that I have used OWC Data Doubler Caddy and I have put a 1TB Seagate SSHD into it while the other drive I have used is an OWC 240GB SSD. I have never seen a macbook pro run so fast. It boots up in 7 sec and shuts down in 3 sec. The functioning is also very fast.
    I am using my SSD for Mac OS X Yosemite and all the apps and the 1TB SSHD for all my data.

I just installed a SATA III SSD from Amazon (since several users had commented that it did work on their 2012 MBPs). However, the MacBook Pro will not format the it. Tried to format as "Journaled" as well as "Journaled/Encrypted" and neither work. After doing more internet research I found comments that mention only a SATA II will work on a 2012 MBP. I have formatted the drive and it is showing up as a storage option. My problem is that my current standard HDD is 1TB (and it's almost full) and my SSD is 500GB so I would like to move just the operating system and the apps onto the SSD (to make my mac a lot faster) and leave all the rest on the 1TB. How do I go about this without loosing the path files to things like iTunes playlists etc. any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    • @YellowElevator815
      @YellowElevator815 7 лет назад +1

      I think the biggest issue is the size difference. You could clone ssd perfectly if its the same size or bigger than the HDD. You would have to resize the HDD to be the same number of GB as the SSD, using Disk Utility. If its too full to resize, look into backing up your files manually to free up space, then doing the cloning procedure.

    Hey mate, thanks for the informative video. I was wondering if it is better to replace the existing HDD with the new SSD and then put the HDD in the caddy so the Macbook will be more smoother booting from the main drive? Or any order does not matter?

      +mi hao chua I think it does matter and, yes, it's better to have the SDD in the existing HDD slot.

    Question GadgetsBoy, i have a late 2010 macbook pro 7,1. I just removed my HDD and installed a 1T Samsung SSD :) Now I want to replace the optical drive just because I don't use CD's or DVDs and I would like the extra storage. I plan on getting a 750 GB WD Hard drive for about $80 as my second drive. When I replaced my HDD for the Samsung SSD, I used USB to SATA adapter and then used carbon copy cloner. After I replaced the drive, SSD Samsung had everything I had on my mac (documents, apps...etc) plus 700 extra GB. MY question is, do I have to do the same with second drive? use the USB To SATA and carbon copy cloner? or just replace the Optical Dirve and install the HDD and nothing else. I hope my question makes sense. Do i use the carbon copy cloner process again like I did the first time? And if so, do I hold "option" eveytime I start my computer and choose between my SSD Samsung and HDD WD?

    Hello. Nice video. Thinking about doing this to mine. Dumb question, but would this decrease the weight a bit of the MacBook itself if I do this? Thank you.

      Hi, yes it reduces the weight but ever so slightly
