Wow! You literally did everything I am looking to do. I even have the same macbook pro 2012. nice
Good video. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate it in detail.
Thank you very much for not jumping any steps in the procedures. This's by far the best video on RUclips. Thanks.
Thanks
Excellent Tutorial. Thank you for being clear and not skipping over steps.
best re and re video on youtube. yours was the fith one i watched.
Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial! I've followed the steps one by one and everything works perfect! Big thumbs up for you :)
Joan Esteve Love to hear that, Joan!
There is a third "screw piece" at the end. You need to take it off of the original caddy and screw it on to the new caddy. That is why you have the two holes on the side so you can add the support from the old one.
I have a mid-2012 A1278 MacBook Pro. Mint condition - had it since 2013 when I bought it new from the Apple Store. It’s always been my main Mac. I haven’t used it a few years as I’ve been using my work-assigned MacBook Pro.
So I’m using it again and it definitely needs the memory upgrade to the max 16GB. And I’ve been considering upgrading my primary internal HDD to a SATA SSD HDD (1 or maybe 2TB) and then use the stock SATA HDD (500GB) as a secondary internal HDD in place of the optical drive which I never use anymore.
This video is very detailed and will serve as my guide.
Thank you! 😎👊
Helped me upgrade my Macbook in 2020. Great video bro.. Especially Super Duper part...
Great video, a couple of suggestions the optical drive parts must come off to be attached to the caddy. It’s necessary to avoid any instability and avoid any connection issues. Good job!
I did it! I had been looking at this for a couple of days. The difference? Your downloadable pictures. They made all the difference. Yeah I dropped a couple of screws but tweezers were in my toolkit. and you could have done things differently, but it worked for me. Thanks, man.
Happy to help.
Thanks. I needed the DVD drive replacement info.
..other than that..GREAT job..very thorough and informative..5 STARS. !!
Alright. I'm gonna do this tomorrow. Any tips for avoiding static electricity? most of the tips I see involve working with a desktop, not laptop.
thanks,
i'd like do the same too, how's the weight after the change?
Awesome video dude! Do you know if MacOS Monterrey running on it thru OpenCore Patch can support dual SSD's?
Thanks for great video. I upgraded my late 2011 by your instruction video. I think with small amount of money I could use my Mac for some years
+Vinh Thuy Lai Yes indeed
Wow this was such an informative video! Thank you! Definitely subscribing! Do you have a video that explains the partitions? I don’t really know how to utilize that feature. I usually just have done one for the OS reinstallation.
Thanks. A partition is setting up one harddrive that acts as many hardrives.
Brilliant! Thank you for showing us.
Happy to help
Thank you David that was extremely helpful.
happy to help
how is the heating when you put the old HDD on the optical drive bay?
At 18:26 the mounting piece on the Optical drive that he is pointing at can be removed by the 2 screws and transferred over to the caddy which was designed with this intention
Botel Onee ^^IMPORTANT IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL THIS PROPERLY!!^^
+Botel Onee lol wonder why he didn't transfer that over.
Lack of common sense judging by the fact that he didnt even take a second glance at the bracket on the optical drive, And/or too excited to get the install finished and didnt care
Do i have to format my old drive? Or i can use it ?
Is it also compatible with macbook pro late 2011?
Nice video. Two comments: (a) that small "L" bracket on the original DVD enclosure should be removed, mounted on the second HDD adapter kit and (using the screw you had left over) anchored down so that the second HDD doesn't move around in the laptop case; and, (2) you might mention in the previous video that you need Phillips #00 and a T6 torx screwdrivers. I think you said a T7 in the video. Other than that, well done. Thanks!
I think i have the same caddy but i think it's sata 2 instead of 3. I tested it with macbook pro 2012 15" and a kingston a400.480gb drive and read speeds from the caddy didn't go higher than 280 MB. Even in raid 0 with 2 of those kingston ssd's it gave lower read speeds compared to my 850 evo.
Perfect instructional video!!
+Sable Williams thanks
where is the link to clone the hard drive to your sdd before installing it in the hdd place ? I am planning to replace my hdd wiht sdd and throw the dvd player out to put it same like yours. Please advise wiht the cloning thing. I purchased a 240 gb crucial sdd. Thanks in advance mate.
o have problem my second hdd its very slow 🤔
But at the end why do you want to erase if you had already clowned it from the old hard drive?
Any reason why the second ssd in the caddy won't show up in disk utility? I'm only being showed 1
great vid, but:
1. DVD 3rd screw mount can be moved to the caddy - 2 screws at the back
2. you should screw in the hdd to caddy - this way less shock will be transferred = long hdd life
And other performance based differences, if I screw ssd to caddy, and boot with it alongside the hdd in the normal bay to use as a storage hard drive?
Great video!
thanks
Mine is MD102 i7(Mid-12). Can i try (4gb & 8 gb) 12 gb RAM in total instead of 16?
Help me please. I bought a drive caddy and an SSD. I intalled the old HDD on the caddy but the cover wont close. The HDD is thicker. It was not flat surfaced when I tried to put it on the macbook pro with the Caddy. the back cover cant close
Nice🔥🔥🔥
Hello Media Unlocked, upon the disconnection of the Wifi and Bluetooth there was a breakage and the wire has become detached from the head. However, this hasn't been much of a problem as my WiFI still works although I am unsure about Bluetooth. The problem is that the old Hard Drive now in the optical isn't recognised and isn't there, however the SSD is and is working rapidly. Do you know if that might be why the Hard drive isn't visible? Maybe also if it's fixable?
my second drive stopped working. I cannot find it in finder or disk utility, any suggestions ?
One thing I noticed is that you did not boot from the SSD after you finished the whole install. I in fact did and now when I go to erase/partition the HDD it says "Cant Unmount Disk." Any suggestions?
If you have a small magnet just stick it to the shaft of the screw driver and you have a magnetic head to hold the screws.
Can I clone my new SSD from HDD and use the SSD as default drive for booting?? Will I be able to do it after installing the SSD? I dont have SATA to USB enclosure.
hello, GOOD DAY. so meaning i dont need to reinstall or reprogram the OS?? all i need is just to clone. am i right?
Great tutorial David. I'm looking to do the same thing with my late 2009 MBP. Quick question.
Why did you partition your drive with two partitions? Is that really necessary? I just want to use mine as a
mass storage device. Can I just use one partition instead? Thanks again. Great and informative video.
Greg
I like it that way I have a partition dedicated to just work files.
I did this twice with two different SSD drives but I'm still not able to Format my second ssd. Without a error message popped up! Any suggestions please?
Did it and the surgery went well! But I have a doubt about the partition part, do I really have to do this and why should I? Thanks a lot man!
I just made one to put my work files on you do not have to have one.
Very helpful.
Thanks
The screws on the side of the hdd that you have to transfer to the new ssd are Torx screws. You'll need a size 6 or a 'T6'. Also, the bracket holding the hdd - those screws are spring loaded and don't need to be removed - just unscrewed enough to release the bracket.
Thanks for the info!!
Guys, this video is 100% genuine.
I need to know why my 2012 MacBook pro shutting down while connecting my iPhone via usb cable… how to fix it 😢 anybody suggest me
hi great video! i have a question i just replaced my hard drive with a ssd but before i did that i cloned what i had in my hd to the ssd thinking im not going to need my hd anymore. now i want to have both drives and replace the optical drive but do i have to erase what i cloned in one of the drives??.
+veLAcity Yes that is correct
Hi Thanks for the video! I want to swap my Crucial 525GB SSD from my 2010 Mac to my Toshiba laptop, but the Toshiba laptop only read the drive as 488GB and my Mac reads it as 525GB, why is that? What can be done so the SSD can be read as 525GB in my Toshiba Laptop?
It is how much space the os and other app take up natively for each system.
help me! i followed every step... but my secondry HDD from caddy is not being recognised / Detected!!!! help!!
Hi, did you solve this issue? I'm just installed mine and am having the same issue.
While removing the battery plug clip, I used a small flathead screwdriver to do so and I'm afraid I bumped a solder on the circuit board. I smelled a bit of a burnt smell. Now I can't turn the computer on and when I plug up to the charger, the green light on the charger doesn't even light up when I plug it up. What does this mean? What should I do?
Did you check your battery?
I have one of the macs from 2012 which has an error which does not allow 2 ram sticks. If I put another 8GB ram stick in, boot up and wait about a minute, the screen goes haywire and the computer turns itself off.
Some mac max out at 4gb ram as well make sure it is ddr2 or ddr3 ram I believe
Great vid. I did exact same thing you said to do from previous vid. But now every time I turn on my MacBook it acts like the first time I turned on after ssd card was installed it acts like is formatting the SSD. Any idea? After that it works great tho. Thanks
It should not be doing that email a pic at mediaunlocked101@gmail.com
Media Unlocked thanks a lot for getting back. Some how i re configure it or something like that. And it’s working lightning fast. It’s unreal Thanks for your video and taking your time reaching out. Thanks again 👍👍
What case is that on your MacBook? Thanks nice video.
I think clear tech 21 can not remember
David Disponett I have early 2011 I want to do the same
Hello Sir,
May I ask if it is ok to upgrade my Macbook Pro 13-inch mid-2012 with 1 TB SSD and 16 GB RAM?
Thanks a lot. Cheers!
Who do you get the hard drive ram
did you already have the MAC OS on the SSD? Not sure how it just booted up like that.
+JP Morales nevermind im retarded. Just realized thats part two
Why do you create 2 partitions on the additional SSD?
Just to have a place for all work files.
Would it be better to keep the HDD in its original location and place SSD into the optical bay , or to use the setup you used?
It has been said on the internet that placing the hdd into the optical bay can cause issues because of the bay's lack of sudden motion sensors .
How has your set up worked for you since installation?
Planning to do an upgrade and wondering which would be the best way to give best speeds and keep the drives 'safe'
Also , if you dont mind , did the caddy you use hold up well over the year? Im considering this caddy or the OWC variant.
***** I would put the ssd in to the the bay the hdd is in and put the hdd in the optical bay. All is still working great for me.
***** im not sure, but I think the problem exists only if your macbook is early 2011 or older, this happens because the sata cables are different for the optical bay and the hard drive bay
***** sudden motion sensors are used to protect the disk in a tradition hard drive and is irrelevant in an ssd since it doesn't use a disk
I did the same process for a week and it still won't work got a new data dubbler and I'm going back in to try again, use flash drive, tried external SSD and time machine and still cannot get the operating system to come back up, NEED HELP PLEASE !!!
email me with details mediaunlocked101@gmail.com see if we can not figure this out
Hi, can I put the SSD in the Caddy and use it as the main drive?
No the computer is programmed to use the main bay hardrive.
Do I have to clone my old drive if I don't need it? How do I install a new OS without the cloning?
+777irak You do not have to clone if you do not need what is on it and start fresh
I'm confused to how it booted do you not need to reinstall the OS on the new ssd when taking the old hdd out? Or was it because you added the old hdd back in?
You clone the harddrive so the operating system is copied over.
its 2020, have any changes applied since then, meaning the 2 ext ssd, can it hold the 1tb or is the 500 the max, also i read somewhere the mbp can hold even more than the 16mg or ram. whats your take on it as of now. i have a mid 2012
Have you done any upgrades since commenting? Looking to do some myself
@@LukeRosen79 no, I have not, put it on hold, but I’m running the Ethernet instead of wifi with 16mb or ram and it’s fast.!!!
why not install the SSD to the caddy ?
Optical drive port is almost 3 gigabit and ssd wouldnt' perform to its full capacity with that rate
but since late 2011 mbpros have sata 3 on optical drive too!
Hey, serious, if novice, question: is there any danger of a magnetized tipped screw driver coming into contact with the internal parts of the macbook pro?
It being magnetized, makes me think that you maybe wouldn't want it coming into contact with the insides.
Thanks,
Also which caddy tray did you end up using? and didn't the caddy you used feel loose without that third screw?
A little the link is in description.
you give us two caddy's, but I don't believe you specified which of the two caddies you used. thanks,
I do not remember sorry. They both will fit.
does it make a difference where you put the ssd? couldn't you have just put the ssd in the optical bay slot with the exact same outcome?
livingshangrila The mac would read it as the second hhd instead of main hhd if I put it in the optical bay
@@MediaUnlocked what about using "start up disk" from "system preferences" to choose where to boot from....that way you could clone using disk utility after the ssd is installed and boot from there.
after replacing the dvd drive with the second hdd, is it the laptop heavier than before? I mean literally heavier in terms of its weight...
I did not notice
a simple answer to this would be no. In the previous setup you had both the hhd and the dvd drive. You're removing the dvd drive from the setup so you're removing that weight. The new SSD is featherweight in comparison.
I know this video is older, but if anyone could answer i would appreciate it. What happens if you choose not to change around the cd rom, and instead just upgrade the ram and change to an SSD?
That is fine you can leave the cd drive in it.
Media Unlocked i did it a couple of days ago with your tutorial videos. Thank you so much, everything went smoothly.
Great!
I Hav a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) With a 500GB Samsung SSD & 16GB Of Ram i love the speed and performance i get from it on Mac & Windows 10 on BootCamp
BigPaco213:::::if i want too do the same upgrade to 16GB Ram & 500GB SSD do i need to transfer the osx???? the rest of the data like the personal cuz I'm going to install everything from scratch. But what i need to know is what do i need to do before installing the two items???..... the RAM & the SSD.....i have no idea what i need to do??i do know how to install the items what i don't know if i need to transfer any data required for the computer?do i need to copy the osx from the hhd to ssd???? or can i just replace the items without doing that???
McRom37 yes you're going to need to install a fresh copy of macOS onto the SSD, there are a lot of great RUclips videos out there and shows u how to do this. BUT the easiest way would be to buy a back up drive and use the Mac time machine to back up all your files and then install the SSD and use once again time machine to restore all your files!!
BigPaco213:::thanks for the reply, yeah that sounds like it would be easier, one Question:did you install the ssd ur self?? or did it come like that when you buy it??how much did you pay for the samsung 500GB SSD??? and where can i get it? and if you also can provide a link for the 16GB RAM.i to have a macbook pro 13" mid 2012 no Retina and not sure if it a i5 or just regula intel.
McRom37 I bought the Samsung SSD off Amazon at the time it was $300 for 500 gigs now it's about $150 for 500 gigs I would say spend the extra money and get a 1TB Samsung SSD. For the ram the brand is called crucial, it comes with 2 8gig sticks.
McRom37 and yes I installed the SSD and the 16 gigs of RAM at the same time by myself took me about 15 minutes.
i have a ssd 250gb install on my macbook pro 13 2012, is it possible if i install a second one using a normaL HD 500GB?
yes it is
then what the speed will be like?
It depends on the speed of the harddrive. I would get a 7200rpm HD
Great Video. ? for you, Once you cloned the hard drive to the new SSD, is the original hard drive empty? clean sweep? or does it still have everything on it? Thanks
***** it will still have ever thing on it. You will need to format it.
Great, ok Thank you very much. I loved your Series of videos for the upgrade.
I notice that after you installed everything that your HDD was empty. Should I erase and format the drive after I clone it?
I did so.
Hey, is there a huge difference between 8 or 16 gb RAM?
I believe so.
Do you recommend this mac book pro (2012) still? Even if its almost 2016? Thanks!
It depends on your budget still a great computer but there are better computers if you can afford a newer one.
Thank You
+Masterglitcher567 dont take the dvd rom out.. this guy is very irresponsible by telling people to open their macs and taking out the drives..with out warning them of firmware issues that will arise when you need to install a program via dvd.. for example if you produce music you will inevitably run into this issue.. not all music programs come downloadable...too many gigs.
JRLM Thank You for your advise.
+Masterglitcher567 no problem
r u sure the 16gb would be works fine? Apple says that only support 8gb ? tell it's your macbook ok with 16gb ram ?
+Renato Apaza Meza It works great for me
i know i do it :) thanks
+Renato Apaza Meza I did the 16GB memory upgrade a while ago on my mid-2012 MBP. In Apple's specs they only mention 8GB, but mid-2012 MPBs accept up to 16GB (will say max of 1600 MHz DDR3 in About This Mac). I've had no issues thus far and I can definitely notice the difference. Check
Mac (early 11") only running slightly faster after these upgrades I am using a 480GB ADATA mainly as a boot drive. Is there something else I could do? The computer handles everything just fine, but after upgrading RAM and both drives (second 1TBSSHD) I was expecting a whole lot more performance.
Unfortunately that is about all you can do.
I moved the two largest programs off the ssd to the hybrid drive and it is running a little faster now. Thanks for posting this video it helped a lot.
Did you think about making it a RAID? That would add more speed. There is a video showing you how to do that.
I may configure RAID when I can afford two Samsung PRO SSDs
Never thought about doing so. That is all you can really do sorry.
OMG that wifi not working was just all needed to be done to connect. Apple charged me $150 to say they had to replace the antenna card. I highly doubted their diagnosis. First time they said I need to change motherboard for $500.
" pull it off " = disconnect from motherboard...
A tip: MacBook Pro can only handle uptimes to 1333Mhz RAM so you are good with that, not 1600Mhz because the mainboard are "struggling" to downgrade the 1600Mhz, but you can use it.
Thanks for that tip!
I can't believe you're working above the PC board... dropping screws, etc.
Cardinal sin of a technician to drop anything metal on an open piece of equipment.
Don't recommend doing that.
I am not a tech just a photographer that is a little tech savey
if you need a paper diagram for the screws....you shouldn't be doing it yourself. and did you call it a "labtop"?
wow i can barely hear you
Not impressed once I saw that you left the bracket off the back of the HDD caddy!
get a 2tb add and leave the dvdrom in...trust me.. it will save you tons of trouble.
+JRLM I just love having a second hd drive never use the cd drive
+Media Unlocked have you ever tried installing programs with an external dvd rom? it doesn't work.. if you are indeed a power user how have you not run into this issue???? tell me because this is a known bug with the mid 2012 mac models when you take out the dvd rom. You should tell people that you are literally breaking some of the functionality by taking out the dvd room. there are 2tb drives and 4tb drives on the way.. you should advice your audience on the trouble you will invite them to.
+JRLM I use the second drive only as back up. I love it. I do not install anything on it. I never need the cd drive.
+Media hopefully you never run in to the issue...it also affects installing programs via download that use roms. and virtual cd rom software... because the firmware thinks its an actual cd.. you should google the issue and put a disclaimer up on your video...seriously.
Good info but your dexterity is that of a moose.
BeachBody.com -Deluxe ....
I hope this guy isn’t working on people’s computers professionally. I’ve watched about 15 videos about doing this stuff myself, and this is the first time Im scared to try this shit. I guess that’s good to not be too confident 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ wheeew
why didn't you fast forward of screw removal like ALL the others do...totally waste of precious time and annoyaing time wasted.. !!
Your fumbling around with screws is quite entertaining. I'd suggest NOT working directly over the motherboard whenever possible.
I installed an SSD on my Macbook Pro 2012 and the iMessage stopped working. I contacted Apple and they said that since it wasn't Apple who installed an "Apple SSD", my Macbook is no longer "Apple"!!
Anyone out there familiar with this situation? Anyone know how I can activate iMessage again?
Death to Apple...they are becoming more and more the Darth Vader of high tech every day.
iMessage Should Be Active When You Login Using Your Apple ID.
Cut your finger nails. thank you for the video!
My computer won't turn on? After install of SSD and RAM it won't turn on. Checked connections and everything is solid. Confused
Does it make a weird sound when trying to boot up or turn on? Also are you sure the hard drive is connect correctly?
Media Unlocked I figured it out. For some reason the Macbook refused to recognize the SSD as a replacement to the CD/DVD drive. I had to remove everything and go step by step to single out the problem. So instead of adding the SSD, I just replaced the old HD with it. Everything is working good now.
