Thank you. This is something on our radar with the goal of making our mainfloor stairwell to our second floor safer as we age . Our issue is our home was built with the mainfloor stairwell directly over the basement stairwell which limits our options. Would love to rebuild the mainfloor stairwell wider and with a bottom winder to break up the height somewhat. Again, excellent video.

*For the amateur designer* 2 steps for a 1/8 turn (22.5 degrees each, 45 degrees total) with the inside 6" forming a 1 ft. straight line, will provide 10-1/8" to 10-3/8" at 12" from the inside of the turn. This should give you leeway to fit step in most strange dimensions. I had to use straight (non-winder) steps to a 1/8 turn, straight steps to another 1/8 turn, finally straight steps to a 1/4 turn and 1 bottom straight step.
    *On the Inside Edge:*
The 2 winders will fill 12" horizontal 0" vertical, 0" horizontal 12" vertical, or 8.5" horizontal and 8.5" vertical at 45 degree angle.
This places the straight non-winder steps at 10" horizontal 0" vertical, 10" vertical 0" horizontal, or 7-1/8" horizontal 7-1/8" vertical at the 45 degree angle.
    *Creating a spiral-ish shape*
This can be used to create a spiral-ish circular or octagon shape 8 feet across with 11 steps before ducking under the higher steps for 85.25" drop, more than enough for the 6'8" code. You have enough room for 4 straight steps entering the 1st turn (48" from 1st winder, 40" for 4 straight steps), 5 if you have the top step set back 2" more.
With this, in a 3/4 turn you can drop 20 steps, almost 13 feet, in an 8' by 8' space, though there light be some code limit on the total number of steps.

Good video, but might I suggest you check the headroom limitations BEFORE you build the temporary (or not) short wall and cut the stringers at the bottom of the existing stair.

Yes, headroom is a definite one, building codes, handrailing, guard railing, materials and the list goes on an on doesn't it. Thanks for sharing.

What about the opposite? I have three winder steps on the top of my staircase that I want to straighten them. I changed the floor plan so it is now more convenient to straighten them and I don’t want to replace the whole staircase. Any clue?

Have you ever used a carpenter square and stair gages or nuts? set them at 12 and 6 7/8ths this will give the angles you need to work off the corner of you sheet, 30* , 60*. for a 2 stage winder simple 45*. We add numbers in the notch according to what is need. We also have standard dimension add into each winder. These dimensions are for installation purposes and how the winder gets supported.

You are very informative, but it is very frustrating that you leave out alot of information that could be very helpful. It seems like you have all this knowledge and have so much experience ,that you assume that other people are on the same page as you. I am not trying to knock you or criticize you, but I was hoping that you could really take a good look at what you are saying and doing to see and if it is possible to explain things or demonstrate things in a different way. You can tell from your videos and your experiences that you are compassionate and love what you do, I just wish that you could reach me better. I know that it's not all you it's also the way that I learn. I would like to thank you for some of the information that you have provided.
