Winter wild camp in the new Nortent Vern 1 2024.

Had pre-ordered the new Nortent Vern 1 in January in the hope it will fill the gap left by my Hilleberg Soulo BL, it finally arrived on the 1st March. Forecast was for heavy snow. I am waiting for some worse weather to test the Vern 1 in, to make a conclusion on its strength and weather resistance. So far so good however, really enjoyed it.
I was Kings Tor with a mate that weekend and we got good dumping on with an 1-2inchs in the morning. really enjoyed the night such a laugh.

There's tents. Then there's Nortents.
Is my first Nortent, but so far I am happy with the quality.
One of the better review videos out there on this tent and yet the guy never even spoke. haha Great job. Whats that drink pouch you had? Coffee?
Thank you, nice to hear. It is coffee, by "the brew company" can find them on base camps foods, it is just ground coffee beans with a filter in a bag. You can reuse the bag and put your own coffee in it too.
Looks great but I wonder if it has the same weakness as Hilleberg, horizontal prolonged driving rain. Mine have leaked like yours did too. What does the material feel like compared to the Soulo Rowan? I wonder if you will be the first to expose any weaknesses? Great film again, ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
Good evening. I hope it won't. Looking at it, I dont think it will, the only openings on the fly are the vent at the head and foot end, they are both low enough and with an overlap of fabric, so if there is any water ingress it will be minimal. Sorry to hear you also experienced that, it is extremely fustrating. As for the fabric, it is comparable to Hilleberg with their Kerlon 1200, definetely not as thick or strong as the 1800. If i were to guess, looking at the materials and design of this tent, it would operate comfortably up to 50mph winds. All the materiasl feel high quality and should last a long time. Perhaps, although I really would like this to have none :) Although I did manage to break 2 of the loops on the pegs when pulling them out.

Hi Rowan do you think an Exped 5LW sleep mat would fit at 1970mm x 650mm please? I’ve ordered the vern 2 but deliberating whether to also get the 1. Great video and the way you’ve shown all the features without uttering a single world is amazing 👍
Good morning, yes I reckon your Exped would fit in the Vern 1 as well. I use the Big Agnes Rapide SL long (51cm x 198cm) plus the most narrow part inside the Vern 1 is 70cm, your mat should fit, especially with being able to tension the inner at the ground.

Looking forward to seeing how this tent handles wind & rain and whether it leaks like your other video of the Soulo. How does this tent compare to the soulo with regards to inner space? Thanks.
As am I. Keeping an eye on the forecast in case some bad weather suddenly comes through. Looking at it I don't think it will leak, you may get some water through the vents at either end, but they are low down enough, so I don't think it will be a problem.
To compare it to the Soulo, yoou certainly get more room in the Vern, both vestibule and inner, you have more pockets, more ventilation options, the ability to tension the inner and footprint, plus 2 doors. The weight is about the same, unless you compare it to a RL with no footprint, then there is a larger weight difference. Obviously I have not had a chance to test it in high wind and rain yet, but from a design comparism the Soulo may be better once you get over 50mph, especially the BL with 10mm poles and Kerlon 1800, but it's not enough of a difference to warrant a tent that costs twice as much, but Hilleberg has a reputation to longevity in their products and we dont know that yet about the Vern, time will tell.
If you were looking for a 1.5 man, 4 season, free-standing tent capable of summits/harsh weather, then there really isn't much the Soulo does that the Vern can't, not an extra £500 worth at least. For a first premium tent for begineers or those on a budget, then this is perfect, it is still safe, easy to pitch and take down, lots of features and I really could not jusitfy a Soulo, now the Vern exists.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll keep an eye out for any new videos you might post. I already have 2 Hillebergs, a Staika and an Unna, but I like the look of the Vern 1. Everyone seems to agree that the Soulo is the best tent for wind, but many, like yourself have pointed out issues with rain. And the size also seems to be an issue for some. I have a doggie companion that always goes camping with me, so I'm thinking the Vern 1 might fill a gap. Anyway, I'll continue to look at reviews of how the Vern 1 holds up in wet/windy weather before I make a decision. Thanks again for your comments. 👍@@RowanWildCamps

For me the space thing is not too much of an issue, however I also have a Border Collie that sometimes comes with me, and with the extra vestibule space and pulling the inner back slightly there is enough room for her to sleep in. If it would help, I could look into taking her with me in the Vern at some point? I will also try to find some bad weather to test the Vern out soon.

Certainly, they are the Rab Storm gloves. An absolute lifesaver when its both cold and wet. Without them I have none of my gear.

I purchased it directly from Nortent and it's been shipped via DHL from China. I'm therefore assuming China is the country of manufacturing?

I had exactly the same, so yes from my understanding they are manufactured in China. The shipping label also has that address on it.

What did you think of the Vern ? A
Good evening, initially it's all good. The weight is on par for similar products, same with the quality of the materials. It is longer than most but due to the ends being less steep, results in similar usable room to shorter but more steep options. Head room could be a bit more, but still, plenty for most. It has 3 intended ventilation options (4 if you open both doors) which work well, but you will still get condensation due to the nature of the tent and the end vents being low down.
I cannot comment of its weather resistance yet, but I reckon it will hold its own in high winds and should not suffer from driving rain. Very easy to set up and take down, pegs could be a tad better, but most people change them out, so not a deal breaker. The option to double pole is very handy as well. Personally, I prefer the length of the pole sections to be longer (but that's just how I pack my bag), as with 3 poles and 20 pegs it is a bulky package, but again no different to its competitors.
The extra guy line, bungee, tube of seam sealer and instruction manual is nice to see it coming with. The way of clipping the footprint/inner is very user friendly, as it the ability to tension is all the way round. There are no storm clips at the bottom of the zips, but can easily be solved with a small carabiner or similar. The storm flap over the zips in the wind may annoy some users as it will create noise, but you will have lots of noise anyway if it becomes that windy. Having the elastics to attach the fly to the ground in between the poles sleeves creates a tauter fly and more space. Having the 2 doors is a really nice addition too.
To conclude I would say if you were a new solo camper looking to enter the premium tent market for a 1.5 man, 4 season, free-standing tent capable of summit/harsh weather then I would recommend this, or anyone just looking for those things but don't want to pay Hilleberg/Terra Nova prices. This is a serious contender, and if it proves to be very capable in bad weather for the long run then this will seriously compete against the Soulo, especially for half the price. The only reason to then buy a Soulo would be because you want too, rather than there is no other option. Whether Hilleberg prices will come down if other manufacturers make something similar, who knows.

@@AndrewParkOutdoors I also thought of that, but I always have a small carabiner with me anyways. A bit surprising Nortent did not add something to keep it shut, but not to worry.
The roof has a major design flaw. It has a concave shape. Not good for heavy snow or rain.
I am yet to experience anything wrong with it, however I can see where you are coming from. I can imagine it is fine in the rain, but perhaps not for heavy snow loading as the poles block it from sliding down. Time will tell, thanks for the comment.
