Rowan Wild Camps
Великобритания
Добавлен 12 фев 2022
Just a GoPro and my phone documenting my walks/wild camps so I can watch them back in the future. Most are of Dartmoor and the beauty it contains.
I have lived on the edge of the moor my whole life and while I knew the east moor very well, I had never seen much of the North Moor in particular, so therefore I have been exploring it thoroughly for the last 9 years.
Hope you find this helpful or at least entertaining or inspiring.

First camp with my Hilleberg Jannu at Steeperton Tor on Dartmoor.
12.07.2024
This is my first time using the Hilleberg Jannu that was exchanged for my Soulo BL back in October. I was also sent the footprint and the 10mm poles that go with it. I sadly have not been able to go on many walks/camps since May. I have taken the Vern 1 out in June but did not film anything, as I just wanted the peace of not having to think of anything. Hopefully when work/life slows down a bit I will be able to get out regularly again as I have many things planned. There were also 2 other gentlemen camped at the North end of Steeperton who I had a nice chat with.

My lightweight hiking set up for 117 miles/3 days across Devon. Plus, Aurora Borealis sighting.

10.05.2024 I am planning to complete the Two Moors Way (117 miles) this summer in under 3 days, so this was an opportunity to get used to my long distance/lightweight kit again. Also was extremely fortunate to see the Northern lights, which I did not realise were supposed to be visible at that week-end. Haytor and surrounding areas were also packed with people, thankfully I did not meet anyone,...
Finally, some decent weather at Red Lake on Dartmoor. (Hilleberg Nallo 2)

21.04.2024 The weather decided to change to be sunny and dry, so I camped somewhere I have walked around many times but never pitched a tent at. Enjoyed Venison sausages for dinner and listening to the Skylarks.

04.04.2024 Annoyingly, when I uploaded the first video it cut out then last 2 minutes or so. I have then made a short one to include the missed-out parts. Very sorry.

04.04.2024 The forecast was to get up 70 mph winds, but I never got there. Highest I recorded was 55 mph. I went to High Willhays on Dartmoor, to test the Nortent Vern 1 in serious condition. Like always I do realise that this is not the "proper" place to pitch a tent and sometimes things go wrong. I do accept full responsibility that it is my fault the tent broke as I went out is stupid condit...
Hilleberg Nallo 2 on a Scottish Mountain with breathtaking views.

30.03.2024 A similar route to my previous camp, but I really wanted to see the views I missed out on. I am so glad I went a second time. Only went down to -2 Celsius and with 30mph winds at some points. Will definitely make a point to get back up to Scotland in the future.
Camping in a Scottish winter up Lochnagar in the Nortent Vern 1.

26.03.2024 Have been staying a week up in Scotland for a couple reasons, one of which to go for a proper winter wild camp in the Cairngorms. Took the Nortent Vern 1 for its 2nd camp. Coldest temperature I measured was -5 Celsius. Bit of a shame about the lack of visibility as the views should have been spectacular. The tent performed very well, even with the snow drifts coming up to a foot high...
Winter wild camp in the new Nortent Vern 1 2024.

02.03.2024 Had pre-ordered the new Nortent Vern 1 in January in the hope it will fill the gap left by my Hilleberg Soulo BL, it finally arrived on the 1st March. Forecast was for heavy snow. I am waiting for some worse weather to test the Vern 1 in, to make a conclusion on its strength and weather resistance. So far so good however, really enjoyed it.
Tarp camping in a weather warning at Lints Tor. (Rab Sil Tarp 2)

17.02.2024 A week prior, the forecast showed a calm night with 1 hour of drizzle, however it got worse every day that I looked, so changed that structure of the tarp and added more guy lines at home to be able to cope with added wind and rain. Making pancakes definitely cheered me up. Wind ended up moving more than was forecast, so by 0200 it was blowing the rain parallel, so through the entran...

Compilation of the Hilleberg Soulo BL leaking

I used the Hilleberg Soulo BL over the course of 5 trips, it rained on 4 of them, and it leaked on all 4, one of which is sadly not here but was during Storm Ciaran as I had to cut that short due to a thunderstorm, but that too leaked. Some clips are not just the leaks, but to show I had the tent pitched correctly and always had the tail facing into the wind. It is just a selection across those...

21.01.2024 Storm Isha with amber weather warning for 80mph at High Willhays. First proper test for the Hilleberg Nallo 2, used double poles, delta pegs and triple pegged everywhere else. I was fully prepared for this and had taken all relevant precautions. I do of course realise this is not the “proper” place to pitch a tent, however I have the correct kit and experience to cope with it. This w...

01.12.2023 By far my favourite camp/walk so far. Forecast to be -9 Celsius, I recorded -9.5 but only thought to take a picture at -8.5. Walked from Two Bridges to Rough Tor, then Devils Tor for the fun of it, then back to Postbridge via Braddon Tor and Hartland Tor. Saw large wild cat prints and scat. Really amazing views and feelings at night. I can accept it probably wasn't the "beast of Dart...

Good effort and well documented. That was quite a lot of snow and shame about your views. Try putting a 50cm cord on your pegs and tying it up the guy rope, makes it a lot easier to pull them out 🥶Nice work 👌
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it. Cheers for the tip, I may try that the next time I may encounter serious snow. Rowan.
The entrance to this tent is a joke :D Vestibule waste of weight.
Not a joke, it depends what you want out of a tent, it is not huge but adequate. This is an extremely strong yet versatile tent. For me, it has enough room for my stuff and to cook. Plus, it is designed to be aerodynamic and the vestibule to take the strain/compression instead of the inner. I would suggest a GT model if you require a lot of vestibule space.
Be good to see you rowan the tit's off it in the wind <3
Soon enough, I'm sure.
Hi Rowan. Jannu is an amazing tent I’ve had one for 5 years. When the weather is particularly bad it’s the one I reach for. People complain about the vestibule but I’ve never found it an issue. It’s designed be sloped and deform in wind as the tent should be pitched into wind when it’s really blowing. The inside is totally unaffected this way even in 60mph. Personally I would get a set on 10.25mm poles. Those gold poles are only 8.65mm. The difference in strength for minimum weight penalty is incredible. Plus you never need to double pole. There is a reason this tent has been rated as one of the strongest and most versatile 4 season 2 person tents for going in 15 years. Enjoy it. Can’t wait to see you out in some proper weather! 👍
Good afternoon, it was you and Tom that really sold it to me, looks amazing. No I can't say I would have issues with it as it will be just me using it at any given time, of which there is loads of room. I thought the same from your usage. I also have the 10mm poles, Hilleberg sent them as well, as part of the exchange and as a good will gesture due to my Soulo BL leaking. I did double pole it for fun in the garden (9mm + 10mm) and the strength was immense. And from the videos/reviews I have seen I would completely agree with your conclusion, can't wait to use it more. Neither can I, looks like it can take a battering. Thanks for watching, how is your Nallo? Does Tom intend to test that sometime? Rowan.
@@RowanWildCamps hi Rowan. Sounds like you got a great deal. The Jannu imo is a much more versatile shelter than the soulo. Nallo is great haven’t used it as much recently in the better weather but it will be the tent I use most over winter tho. Yes Tom will do a review on it more towards autumn / winter. He has often toyed with the idea of getting one and hasn’t actually seen it yet so will be good to get his thoughts on it. Cheers. Gary
@@garynesbitt5078 I certainly did. And it really looks that way, grante the only thing I won't use the Jannu for is when I take my dog with me, the Nallo has a much better vestibule for that. I am excited to see you/Tom using the Nallo and hearing your thoughts on it, I always feel it is overlooked by the Nammatj, yet has so much to offer. I can't wait for that. Thanks for your input. Rowan.
Nice and thanks for sharing 😊 How would you compare Jannu to Soulo? I’m not aware of your reason to swap. To me Jannu seems like a great alternative to Soulo for someone who wants more space for a few more grams.
My Soulo BL had a pretty serious leak in the corner of the zipper, so Hilleberg exchanged the 2 and provided the footprint and extra 10mm poles. As for a comparism they do have very similar applications, and obviously a lot more room inside, but the Soulo is easier to pitch. As for the weather resistance I cannot comment due to only using the Jannu once. But from other videos about it, it looks tremendous. When I experienced 50mph in my Soulo you would think it was 20mph. Looks to be similar strength and performance. Time will tell. But so far I really like it. Thanks for watching, Rowan.
Love the new video, beautiful new tent👍
Glad to hear, thanks.
Great tent. Ive been wild camping Dartmoor for over 30 years. The North of the moor is my favourite part. I was down there for a week at the beginning of the month around Belstone and Okehampton. Looks like you had a good camp 👍
Me too, the North moor is fabulous. Such a nice area. I did indeed thank you.
Man. Nice tent.
Thank you.
Most excellent filming and editing, changing my Fallraven Abisko lite 1 for the KUIU Storm Star 2p for Winter Mountain Wild Camps (a lot of research when into my decision). Hillebergs are great, though over priced me thinks. Your Jannu looks like a smashing tent. Doing a Dartmoor Wild Camp at end of September 2024. By the way, life can throw a curveball at you sometimes, it is not always a nice experience, but unfortunately it is part and parcel of our existence. Me time is very important, to allow ourselves time to evaluate our options in such circumstances. Looking forward to seeing many more of your adventures.
Thank you very much. They are indeed expensive, but worth it if you use your kit alot. So far so good with it. It is lovely down on Dartmoor at the moment, hopefully you have a good trip. Certainly does, I just try to keep moving forward and remember to spend time outside. Thank you, should be lots more come. Rowan.
I personally wouldn't of pitch there ground situated but ur cud deffo do with sealing like u sad
No, it is of course not the correct spot to pitch, but done for testing and to challenge myself. I would also say it needs sealing, even though Nortent says it does not, only advisable.
Hilliberg brilliant tents I've got 4 nallo allac acto soulo but I don't like the vestibule on that one almost useless in bad weather but u bought it so nowt do wi me happy camping mate
Quite a nice collection there. It is small, granted, but it will be just me using it, and there is loads of room inside.
Good to see you back out Rowan. The weather was far too gentle for you. I always find the vestibule really odd on the Jannu and almost useless if the wind is hitting it. Hope all’s well done there. ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
It is nice to back at it. I am sure the weather will make itself know soon enough. Agreed, however I will just be using it for myself so it is perfect for that. Thanks for watching. Rowan.
I was wondering where you were. Glad to see you're back out, and with a new tent no less. I reckon this video will garner a whole lot less controversy compared to your last one with the Vern. :)
Ah apologies. Only my 2nd time out since my previous video, work/life have gotten so busy recently. I hope so, still cannot beleive all the chaos that went around that. Hope you enjoy the video, I plan to be out again in the week with my dog. Rowan.
Some may say it is overkill, but my first hilleberg was a Tarra. Got it after a WIldcountry tent got wiped out in a storm
For these conditions, yes. My first was the Nallo 2. I have always liked the look of the Tarra, but the weight puts me off a bit and I don't require dual vestibules. I like to think of it as a big brother to the Jannu, being BL and an extra pole and vestibule. I had several Wild Countries and Vangos before I made that purchase. They make such a difference. Thanks for watching.
I can’t believe this is classed as a 4 season tent. Is this the Hilleberg killer everybody is talking about?
That is correct, the same tent. I would say it is good up to 35/40mph winds (forecast) as that allows you a buffer in case it increases unexpectantly.
I’m curious, why would you set up the tent with the entrance facing into the wind? Awesome video btw, the most comprehensive endurance test I’ve seen for a tent. High Willhays is a brutal place to be and is the perfect place to test kit like this. Given the picturesque nature of Devon, it’s easy to forget people still die on Dartmoor. You have balls of steel.
Good afternoon, if it looks like it in the video then I apologise, however the doors are not into the wind, the narrowest part of the tent is facing the wind so I am opening the door on the leeside of the tent. I pitched it with the same logic you would with a Soulo, having one of the narrow vent ends into the wind. It certainly is, can be worse than people realise as you say. A week or so back a team got taken of the moor with hypothermia and that was in July (I don't know the details). Thanks for watching. Rowan.
Im yet to do a snow camp, great video.
If you get the chance too, you should, they are great fun.
I was Kings Tor with a mate that weekend and we got good dumping on with an 1-2inchs in the morning. really enjoyed the night such a laugh.
Lucky, sounds really nice.
Proud Cousin over here
You'll have to join me one day.
Get yourself a Kuiu storm star 2p and never ever worry about the weather!
I don't know much about it, but it looks good. Have recently got a different tent to try out for the time being.
Great video and great test under these kind of conditons. New sub here.
Thank you, hope it was helpful.
Brilliant and honest review of a tent that you would have to depend on ! The tent stood up amazingly well being so exposed were normally you wouldn't pitch, but every tent has its limits, looks a pretty bomb proof tent all the same but you have shown the week points thank you,❤
Thanks for watching. Yes, it did pretty well, especially as you say, in a less-than-ideal spot. I won't be going out in it if the forecast is for more than 40mph.
Great demonstration. Feels like you have put the opening side of the tent into the wind? Normally I would pitch the that side away from the wind.
Thank you. No, I'm afraid not. The tail of the tent was facing the wind (the end vent on the opposite side to the door with the hood) so I kept the windward side shut and used the door on the leeside.
One reviewer claimed that the Nortent 1 was a Hillebrg Soulo beater. When asked about his claim, he meant that it is weaker but competitive as alot chaeper. He reconned that it may be as strong as a Soulo Red Label. You experience makes me dount this. I have the Soulo BL.Your tent seems to be more spacious as wider, but that will be a weakness as not as aerodynamic, the soulo not only is narrower, but shaped like a coffin, the narrow foot pitched into the wind. I am surprised that your tent was getting flattened at under 60mph, the soulo in contrast has been filmed in 80mph winds which are almost double the power. Have had 2 tents fail including a hilleberg Akto. which got ripped out of the ground as was getting in , resulting in a bent pole. Never had any issues with soulo BL though, such as flattening, all that happens is the inner flaps a bit. My Soulo BL had only 1 leak , a top vent zipleak, cured with seam sealer. For bad weather, I double pole the short pole eliminating its weak point, which I believe makes it bombproof as no weaknesses. I bring along a PhD sleeping bag cover due to condensation issues in the Soulo which solves the problem of a wet sleeping bag.
A hilleberg BL Soulo beater is the Kuiu Storm star 2p tent, much more spacious, equal as bombproof, with four added advantages 1. Does not flap in wind 2. More inner space. 3. Little condensation issues, as ventilation is great. 4. Nearly half the price!
Communication is key. Grand opportunity to explain the product first hand in heavy conditions.
Agreed, but I just don't feel I can add much to most videos, one of the reasons I don't say anything. But I can certainly see your point.
Yeah I get that... just speak the mind and be you, because we like what you do and upload for us. Look forward to more and carry on camping, mate
Just came across your video and must say, I enjoyed it! Love the pancakes. What was your pack weight cos it looked quite small?
That's nice to hear, glad you did. I'm not sure as I rarely weigh my loadout, however, I would guess around 8-9kg with consumables. Next time I have a similar camp, I will make a point to weigh it. Rowan.
Vern 2 is on another level.
It's certainly bigger.
That’s hardcore. 🇦🇺👍🍺
Thanks for watching.
The old chestnut. If you can afford it ? Buy a Hilleberg.
Nah flappy tents buy a bomb proof Kuiu Storm star 2p tent, at half the price and no flapping at all.
I have Hilleberg Nallo 2, and just recieved my Jannu from exchanging my Soulo will, so hopefully be out in the Jannu soon. But Nobody was to truely know about the strength of the Vern until people start testing. Thanks for watching.
Not had any experience with those, so I can only speculate having looke at them online. But the do look good.
Why do you use a canister stand when the canister is literally just sitting there with a pipe running to the stove? 🤔🤔
Why not? I always have one with me, doesn't affect anything being on the gas.
Great vid. How did you anchor down your tripod for those external shots whilst pitching your tent in strong winds?
Thanks for watching, I just kept it low down and pushed the feet into the ground a bit.
Really don’t get all this silence nonsense
At last a RUclipsr that doesn't have the camera pointed on themselves but the beautiful scenery.. Subscribed...
The scenery is much more important (and prettier) than I am :) Thank you for watching, glad you liked it. Rowan.
55mph is pretty extreme… and the manufacturer recommends double poling in such conditions.
Certainly is, and you are right, they do. However, I wanted to know what it was capable of out the box.
@@RowanWildCamps yeah, well the instructions are in the box (or on the website) so you haven’t really done that mate. I say it respectfully, but if you’re not going to follow the manufacturers’ guidelines then you’re basically only doing it for clicks. That’s a shame but hey, it’s your call
@@marccoulson6555 Like I said, you are correct. Perhaps I wasn't very clear, I wanted to know how this tent in its basic configuration (no trekking poles, extra guy lines, changing the geometry, adding poles) performs straight after purchase. May I also ask, what do I gain from clicks? I only started making my videos public for my friends and myself to rewatch when I worked away at sea.
@@RowanWildCamps fair play mate. Like I said, I’m being respectful; I’m not one of those RUclipsr bashers. The Vern-1 is a very good tent, but other than the Soulo, very few of this style are suited to 50mph+ winds so it was always destined to fail. Double poles and thoughtful pitching will definitely help though mate. All the best, sincerely
@@marccoulson6555 Thank you, and neither am I. I would certainly agree, but until I tested it, the public never truly knew what the Vern 1 was capable of. After I test the gears limits, I then act in accordance to its limits e.g. double poles etc. This is very obviously not a guide on proper pitching procedures, only a test. To be frank I most confidently know right from wrong in these situations, hence why there is no advice nor is it a "how to" guide. But thank you for your point of view. Rowan.
Great video!
Thank you very much.
Great video. Did you use the tent without the inner? I couldn't really tell. I have a PC version and love it.
Thank you. No, I was using the inner, that being said I have been toying with the idea of removing the inner as it is a large space without it. I was tempted by the PC version, looks really nice.
I need wooden utensils as I can't stand metal on metal 😫 good vid sub added
Ah, fair enough. Apologies for that then. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching. Rowan.
Well done you that was a great test of the tent and conditions looked utterly miserable so fair play to ya
Thanks for watching, hope it was useful. It sure was quite the test, for me included.
Beautiful scenery! How did you source your water, you dont seem to have a filter with you?
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it. I completly forgot to show it, I use a sawyer mini plus a Cnoc Vecto 2L bladder.
@@RowanWildCamps sick man!
Monty would be in his element 😊
I love the idea of setting this set up without teh inside getting wet before putting a fly over.
It is a feature I cannot go without, plus the clip system makes pitching it a great deal easier.
2km from his front door...50m to his car...when you can pack up and just go home.. A serious and experienced hiker looks for more sheltered areas if storms are coming.. Don't know why that is frontal lobe collapse on the people these days
I been out in my Vern a few times and I found it great, there have been loads of people criticising it but looking that these conditions in this video it’s done well, also I have seen more expensive tents fail in high winds
I too feel that people have been overly critical of it. It is not just Nortents fault however. I would say for the majority of people this is enough of a tent for them. Very true, and you never know how gear performs in the real world until people test them. Hope you enjoy your Vern. Rowan.
Grew up on the edge of Dartmoor 40 odd years ago. Love the place. Now live high up in the Sierra Navada mountains in southern Spain. Weather will still catch you out hey. Ps i use a Nordic Sil Tarp and Rab bivvy. It's great.
As do I, it is a special place. Wow, that sounds vastly different, must make for some good walks too. I will look into that as well, Thanks.
9:49 this is why I love been out there!!!! Great video my friend. At first I thought it was the Hilleberg Akto. Very similar tents. Liked!!!
Me too. It is so beautiful on the moor. I'm glad you liked it. I was tempted by the Akto, but for what I need the telemark is perfect and significantly lighter. Thanks for watching. Rowan.
Hi good video ive subscribed i do camping videos on my channel too 🤟🤟
Rowan miserable weather but it just goes to show that a tarp setup up properly will give you that respite needed in foul conditions. Well done m8 Liked and Subscribed
It does indeed, I was suprised how well it worked. If set up time was a concern then a tent would have been far easier and quicker, but I do enojoy the tarp when is raining. Thank you for watching, glad you liked it. Rowan.
