    The 2wd Mk5 RS2000 was the better looking and better drive over the 4 x 4 mk6 and the mk5 2wd was quicker than the mk6.

    God, I wish the US got these. Mk5 has much more cohesive, well-resolved styling. Love those RS2000 rims, though.

    Escort cosworth is basically coach built by Karmann on Sierra running gear. The RS2000 had a transverse engine, electronically coupled Haldex style 4wd... hence the smaller tunnel in the RS2000 - gearbox is mounted with the engine, not inline in a mechanical drivetrains. it’s because one is basically a silhouette homologation model for WRC and the other is a warmed-up commuter car.

    The problem for me with the RS2000 was Ford sticking the body kit on lesser models and devaluing the car. If I had to choose a RS2000 I would get the one with the power bulge on bonnet which had a great advert on TV, Rocky tune if I remember correctly. Haven't seen one on road in years.

    Beautiful cars and great, detailed video. I had an RS2000 4x4 just like yours, I loved it. For me the weak points were, as you mentioned it was underpowered (or maybe under torqued rather) and the brakes were weak. However, the handling and steering (and engine sound) were superb. You could power it into any corner with confidence, if it did lose grip you just got a little bit of satisfying 4 wheel drift. I had an Escort 1.8 Si at the same time, the cars looked almost identical, and despite the Si feeling just as firm as the RS its handling was nowhere near, probably thanks partly to the 4x4's unique multilink rear suspension.
    The reason the transmission tunnel is so much smaller than the Cosworth's is because the Cosworth's houses the gearbox and transfer box at the front - on the RS2000 they're under the bonnet, seen as the engine is sideways. All that's in the RS2000's tunnel is the propshaft.
    It annoys me when BMW kill the RWD layout of the 1-series because they say that the packaging isn't good enough with the engine lengthways. When you look at the Escort Cosworth, except for the width of the front footwells, I'd say it has just as much interior length as the regular FWD Escort. If Ford could do that 30 years ago why can't BMW now?

  • @stevienico452
    @stevienico452 4 года назад +2

    Much prefer the Cosworth, RS2000 wouldn't turn many heads, yes OK for shopping and probably no worries about using it daily. The Cosworth is on the other hand probably on some thieves shopping list unfortunately. If it were mine I wouldn't leave it out of my sight. Cosworth looks the business, I love them.

    Omg the two gearbox's are totally different the cosworth uses a mt75 and the rs2000 a mtx75. The cosworth is inline 4cylinder the rs2000 transverse. The gear selectors are totally different just they look similar. The rs2000 was not based on any MK4 escort it is simply a bolt on 4x4 system which is quite weak compared to the cosworth.
    The floor mats also are not standard they are optional extras if purchased originally.
    The whole suspension everything is different between the two cars apart from using the same principal type. The clocks in the cosworth are also unique no other model goes to 170mph. The steering wheel and body kit on the rs2000 Mk6 is taken from the GTi. It was also the mirror switch what was the same not the electric window.
    I like your videos Jamie this was not your best one.
    You should do a video of the history of the cosworths and why they were produced and how it all happened. Did you know the Sierra cosworth is in the record books it's the first production car to have over 100bhp per litre capacity.!!
    I can help you with the technical back ground if you wanted to do a tech video on the history. Do you no why the small turbo cars were produced and the did not stay with the large turbo set up?

      @@ra52 Excellent cheers, I was thinking it couldnt be the Haldex system as that was used in the RS2000 etc - cars that were originally front wheel drive but had a power off to the back but still prodominatly front wheel drive, any idea of the power split for the cosworth? I'd love to buy one! I've got a 5 GTT I've had for 19 years and would love to expand the collection

    • @ra52
      @ra52 4 года назад +1

      @@ianbrisland1982 the Sierra and escort used a 70/30 split unless it's the rouse sport that was modified to 50/50. If your thinking of buying one I could be your man thinking of selling one of my collection.
      Your right the system used in the rs2000 is taken from the Mondeo. It's nowhere near as strong as the cosworth. The cosworth is good for 330bhp if in good order and you don't slam the gears. The weekday link is 3rd gear then the gear sets separate slightly with the power and it chews the teeth. The linkage is floppy but a short shift part and Polly bushes in the mounts on the cradle make it nice for cheap money around £80.

    • @dungareesareforfools
      @dungareesareforfools 4 года назад

      @R A agree with most of that, but the RS2000 didn't take anything from the GTi - it was the other way around. The GTi was pretty much a run out model that didn't come about until 1997 when the RS2000 had already stopped production. They were probably using up RS2000 trim parts.

    The MK5 looks far, far better, more unique, agree that the MK6 was more refined.
    A/C and opening rear windows were optional on the RS2000, they were available in the UK
    The Cossie had an MT75, the RS2000 had the MTX75

    It's amazing how similar the Cosworth Calibra Turbo engine looks to the Escort Cossie engine. The Coscast C20LET is almost identical, the rocker cover was slightly different, the spark's were in the middle on the C20LET, oops they are on the Escort it's almost the same effing engine just one has a Ford badge the other a Vauxhall.
    I had a Calibra Turbo 4x4 for over 10 years coz I couldn't afford the Escort Cossie at the time.
    Real shame it was never graced with the Cosworth badge though as there'd still be loads of them left on the road like the Escorts, but then a 24 year old me wouldn't have been able to afford the Calibra either if it did have the Cosworth badge on the back, swing's and roundabouts I suppose.
    I can't warrant the Escort Cossie price now though, so traded in my five pot Focus ST n got a BMW M235i instead which is even quicker so who cares!
    One day!

      It's NOT about quicker ,in rallying your car would do nothing ... absolutely NOTHING compared to a escort Cosworth and you don't compare a 28 year old hot hatch with a modern BMW .only a Shithouse on Piston heads would say something that utterly stupid

      I compared the Calibra Turbo 4x4 with the Escort Cossie, not the BMW.
      The only comparison I did recently was with what my finances were spent on. I've always wanted an Escort Cossie, I bought a Calibra Turbo 4x4 (Cosworth) instead 17 years ago coz I couldn't afford an Escort Cossie.
      I was just randomly explaining why I still don't have one even though technically I can afford one, but not for a daily drive. So I chose a new car with a warranty over a 28 year old car with no warranty, it was my way of making me feel better that I still don't own my dream car.
      Who with an Escort Cossie has ever used it for Rallying?
      Yes the car was developed as a rally car and sold to the public due to the rally class rules of the 90's, but no owner ever used them for rallying.
      They'd be taken to track days, where the BMW would probably beat the Cosworth and they'd also be taken to Santa Pod for 1/4 mile drag race where the BMW would beat it by at least a second or two.
      No Escort Cosworth owner ever used their car for Rallying!
