  • Some cars grow a legend that you'd think it would be impossible to live up to. Such is the case with the Ford Escort Cosworth. The baddest car you could buy in the 1990s, and so connected with crime that it became uninsurable. However, 25 years on, what is this almost mythical creature like to drive?

The Escort Cosworth still looks amazing even today. I remember years ago, driving past some rich dudes massive house and seeing two lone vehicles sitting outside on the drive. One was a helicopter.....and the other was a Cossie. Still one of the coolest things I've seen!

the big wing in the back that was suposed to have 3 instead of only two downforce boards along the back window as the original engenier and designer said when it came out i felt like i was carrying a huge volume atatched to the back of the car and everybody that passed by me were looking like if i was driving a weird thing ,i even took it from the car and put the regular one that almost every escort at the time had ,but it grows on you and i install it again this to do refer that makes the car incredible safe at high-speeds i remenber driving in a highway at 160km´s hour and felt like the car was almost stoped, i remenber looking to the body and notice that in diferent panels there were lines opened to help its stability as on the back of the top there was a decrease of height having a air flow to the lowest wing(sorry if my english is confusing)

His dad was a banking dude and lived in Switzerland. This was 92.
The guy was a bit unhinged and one drunken night he came back and danced on the roof of his intrgrale and bent the fuck out of it.
      He dropped out shortly afterwards.
Such a waste of a car and very probably a life.
I guess his Dad was busy and not present enough when he was growing up?

Cosseh. On the subject of Clarkson, there is an interesting story behind why he has so much affection for them (from his Sunday newspaper column). He got a phone call late one night to say his dad was seriously ill in hospital up in Sheffield and wasn't expected to live much longer. He absolutely hammered the car up from London, doing speeds that even he won't admit to. He got there in time and had a few minutes to say his goodbyes. However many faster, more exotic or somehow "better" cars there are on the planet, that sort of thing matters, and it stays with you.

These Cossies were my favourite but I do remember Essex Police (Colchester?) had a grey Sierra RS Cosworth and you could hear the dump valve at the bottom end of the high street. It wasn't a subtle car. It did pull over lots of boy racers though.
Their main reasoning for having them though was proably to do with the fact that they had to patrol the A12... basically a drag strip between Suffolk and London linking the capital to the port of Felixstowe.... ie., a very busy drugs route.
I remember they had one of the very last Vauxhall Senators on the road, they loved them so much. M-reg, yes, M-reg. That late. I believe it was a metallic burgundy in colour.
This is also the force that bought Subaru Imprezas and Skoda Octavia VRS cars to patrol their patch. Crazy.

My abiding memory of the Escort RS Cosworth was back in my teenage years.
My mates & I were out on our bikes when we heard the screeching of tyres and a loud bang, we turned our heads to see a MKII Cavalier SRi had lost control and went straight into a fence.
We rushed over to see 4 rather sheepish teens getting out of their (I assume) Vauxhall.
The owner of the fence came out of his farm house, looking rather annoyed at his damaged property.
He turned around, went back to his house and retrieved his Escort RS Cosworth, in exactly the same spec as the one in the video, & parked it up just ahead of the Cavalier.
Straight away I knew why he'd done this, basically there's no way these guys were going to even think of reversing out & driving off.
The power & presence of the Cossie was enough to keep them there until the police arrived.
It was the UK equivalent of keeping a gun trained on them, utterly brilliant.
