Dude! I had been beating my head up against a wall trying to use an STL for reference in Fusion and couldn't get it to recognize any reference points. The BRep conversion saved my life! Thank you so much! Great work!
Nice quick Tutorial! Makes it way easier now to mod an stl. Adding text to complex stl, here I come ;-) Setting to check in Fusion360 to be able to interact with the Mesh / Stl. under your name in the right up corner, you find the Preferences box, under the preferences check in the preview tab the Mesh Workspace. Luck luck
This is awesome! No more opening the STL in Freecad, converting to mesh, saving to step, opening in fusion! Glad I can do it all from a single app now! Impatiently waiting for your high poly video as well!
This is great. I was about to try and redesign a clamp from scratch as i needed something larger. Now i at least have a nice starting point with the existing STL. Thanks!
This turotial helped. Much simpler to understand. Last one i went on the guy pretty much asked us to rebuild the whole model pretty much which defeats the purpose of a remix.
Thanks for the video, I was actually just trying to figure out how to do something like this but I just wasn't figuring it out, glad you posted this when you did. Will definitely watch the high poly method whenever you post it.
I was trying to print a fan mount that was made for a very small screw. I know i could have just drilled out the holes. but the drill was all the way in the garage. this let me modift the sace cof the screw holes easily and put in recessed nuts. Great Video!!!!
For people who have Fusion 360 Educational like me follow thesee steps: Import the stl like in the video and before EDIT MESH disable timeline history [RIGHT CLICK COMPONENT -> DO NOT CAPTURE DESIGN HISTORY], then right click mesh and do [MESH TO BREP]. Now you have a solid to play around :) good luck.
Just finished the Udemy course today...very informative and well done. I'd love to see a course on creating multi-part designs to print and snap together or fit together some way. Something more complex than the soap dish. Great work!
You might have to disable the timeline see knowledge.autodesk.com/de/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/DEU/The-mesh-workspace-is-missing-in-Fusion-360.html
Very good video. Easy to watch and learn. Excellent pace. These videos are even more important now that A123D Design is no longer being supported and more folks will be migrating to Fusion 360.
Thank god for this video :) Thanks to this I noticed that fusion 360 had import svg setting... I was loosing my mind how to create and stl from svg and luckily fusion has me covered :) Thank youuuuuuuuu I was loosing my mind for 3 hours now...xd
awesome vid! I just started to learn 3D modeling today a thing I found out is that you could put on symmetry in the extrusion direction to make the eyes at the same time :D
Hi, nice and clear tutorial. I have a question on how to flatten the bottom surface as shown in video at 4.39? I heard you said something like hit a button on the keyboard? thank you.
This is just what I need to edit a thingiverse model. But at 2:16 you right click and select edit. I don't see edit in the menu that appears after right clicking. Is it different now in 2022? Thanks Kev.
Unfortunately when I do the "Erase and Fill" it just does the "Erase" part on my imported STL. It doesn't fill anything. I'm still messing with it but wonder if you've run into this before and if so, how did you manage to get it fixed? Thanks for the vide!!
when you made this video you should have noted your settings I just checked and it doesn't have the edit function so i'm curious what your settings were and if you were using beta functions,
How I use Fusion 360 to edit STL files: Step the first: Download and install latest Blender release. Step the second: Import and edit STL files in Blender. Step the third: Export STL files from Blender.
How do you get the Do not capture in design history? When I right click on the body in the mesh workspace, I don't get the do not capture design history option. Is it a setting? I am having trouble figuring it out.
You don't get it by clicking on the body. You have to click under the browser on the left hand side where it will have the name of your design. If you haven't saved your design yet it will simply say "unsaved" - that's where you want to right click. Also you want to get out of the mesh environment first so when you finish your edits you'll want to click on Finish Mesh to be taken to your modeling environment first.
Desktop Makes - thanks! I was pressing on the bar on the left, not the actually body, but I had already saved in the beginning, but now I got it. Thanks!
Help. My screen does not look like yours. I do have the newest version. I do not have an EDIT, when I R/C, only Edit Feature. My menus also looks different. I have taken an stl and made it into a solid. Just need to edit the bottom of the mold to make it thinner. I can select but not edit it. Thank you.
I followed this video but the STL has multiple parts. When I try to select one part it selects all the parts. Is there a way to separate them into separate bodies/components automatically?
I don't mean to hijack but another youtuber Lars Christensen has another way of doing this which worked for what i was trying to achieve. Both good ways to edit stl files.
When I delete one triangle of a flat plane it doesn't delete all the triangles like it did for you at 4:39. Also My STL from thingiverse, comes up as a hollow object, its not filled solid. How do I make sketches solid to fill in the plane I just cut ?
I found that deleting triangles doesn't always work with deleting the entire plane. It will depend on the model and on how it was designed. Watch this video where I extrude a sketch to clean up all the triangles on a flute that I brought in as an stl: ruclips.net/video/Dm9kNvnosRk/видео.html
Well, I did not find the "EDIT" Option in Fusion360.... My Problem is a STL file that got many surfaces... The apple rosette is turning round for ages... I cannot edit a human jaw scan due to too many surfaces.... that's ridiculous... furthermore I think that crucial features are too much hidden and not intuitive enough. Besides it uses so many resources... straight to the point options would be making the workflow way easier... CAN YOU HELP ME SOLVE THAT DENTAL PROBLEM?
This video is very in dept BUT when i go to mesh it says to open the preview page in preferences and enable mesh workspace but i do not see where i can do that . Under my username in fusion it has preferences but inside that under mesh there is no option to enable
When you open the preference menu take a look at the left hand side and the last item says "Preview". Click on that and you'll see an option for Mesh Workspace.
TL;Watching again: Insert STL file -> Edit mesh -> Finish mesh. -> Right click on name -> "Do not capture design history" - OK -> Right click on model -> "Convert Mesh to BRep" -> Select body. Re-enable Design history.
You should reduce the mesh. knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/getting-started/caas/screencast/Main/Details/a281d5a7-2a50-4191-ad96-199a4f49edc0.html
Modelling a low density mesh is easy, but with one high density organic mesh, it will be a real nightmare...also it is a real mess with the menu, it was changed from version to version...also a little trick by cut, is by the first extrusion you can do it symetric and get the 2 eyes from one shot, just say...
Hi! Thanks for this excellent work! I can't find the EDIT mesh command (at 2min20sec) . My Fusion 360 is version 2.0.6670 (Personal Use) I'm trying to modify this: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4026279 Thanks. Alex
edit isn't where it is on my fusion and I just downloaded it. in preferences its checked off but mesh isn't anywhere so when you said you had to delete history i did that and the mesh appeared but once i was in the mesh environment the select and stuff didnt work whats so ever it would even highlight when i moused over. I'm new at this not sure what it would be
i got it to where afer i got into mesh mode i reinserted another mesh stl of he same file it allowed me to select the faces but theres no button that says finish mesh now. sooo yeaahhhh what now...
I have the same issues, I am working with 3d scanned STL and OBJ files and none would let me do anything. I miss 123Design, simple but it worked. Now I cannot even open new files in 123Design menu. I am going to look for other software that is more user friendly than this.
Dude! I had been beating my head up against a wall trying to use an STL for reference in Fusion and couldn't get it to recognize any reference points. The BRep conversion saved my life! Thank you so much! Great work!
Dude!!! THANK YOU 4 SHARING! Great tutorial skills. So about 3 years later, your video is still teaching.

Thanks, Xiao Shi Z 1. Yes, make sure to check the Mesh Workspace option in the preview tab under preference. I forgot to mention that.
This is awesome! No more opening the STL in Freecad, converting to mesh, saving to step, opening in fusion! Glad I can do it all from a single app now! Impatiently waiting for your high poly video as well!
Absolutely, makes life so much simpler to do it all in one application.
This is great. I was about to try and redesign a clamp from scratch as i needed something larger. Now i at least have a nice starting point with the existing STL. Thanks!
Great tutorial! I've always struggled with trying to modify STL's, this helps a lot!
You're welcome Mr. Crankyface.
Great help! I have been wanting to change files from Thingsiverse for a while. Now I can. Thank you very much for sharing your experiments!
This turotial helped. Much simpler to understand. Last one i went on the guy pretty much asked us to rebuild the whole model pretty much which defeats the purpose of a remix.
OMG your are a lifesaver!!! This is what I needed and no amount of searching had helped, I stumbled on this as a suggested video. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video, I was actually just trying to figure out how to do something like this but I just wasn't figuring it out, glad you posted this when you did. Will definitely watch the high poly method whenever you post it.
Glad it helped you Mykel.

Thank you for this video! I've been searching for how to do just this in fusion for a while!
You're welcome Jacob!

Great video.
Just one small observation; Rather than performing the X extrusions twice, I would have set the Direction to Symmetrical.
Just finished the Udemy course today...very informative and well done. I'd love to see a course on creating multi-part designs to print and snap together or fit together some way. Something more complex than the soap dish. Great work!
Thanks Dale. I'll keep that in mind when creating future courses.
When I try to enable Mesh Workspace it still doesn't work and it still tells me I need to enable Mesh Workspace even though it is enabled.
I'm sure you figured it out by now, but the menu is now at the top in between from and sheet metal, easy peasy. No more right click and edit.
You might have to disable the timeline see knowledge.autodesk.com/de/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/DEU/The-mesh-workspace-is-missing-in-Fusion-360.html
Thanks I finally finished my project and it’s printing now. Your video helped. Fingers crossed

up to 4:14 saved my butt on a project... SUBSCRIBED AND BELLED
Excellent tutorial, really well put together.
Thanks FusionSourse!
One of the best tutes I've ever seen. Thank you.
awesome vid! I just started to learn 3D modeling today a thing I found out is that you could put on symmetry in the extrusion direction to make the eyes at the same time :D
Thanks, saved me a lot of work. Was about to completely remake a part.
Great! Glad to hear.
This helped so much, thank you so much for making this video
Really fantastic information, helped me a huge amount - thank you very much!! You have yourself a new subscriber!
Amazing video mate, straight to the point. Brilliant.
Hi, nice and clear tutorial. I have a question on how to flatten the bottom surface as shown in video at 4.39? I heard you said something like hit a button on the keyboard? thank you.
Simply select one of the faces on a side of the model that you wish to simplify and press the DELETE key
You can't believe how much you helped me!! Thanks so much man!
Appreciate the video! Working through your class at the moment. Are you planning on doing more Udemy courses?
Thanks Elija. Enjoy the course. Yes I plan on recording an advanced Fusion 360 course in the near future.
Good job. Well explained and easy to follow. You earned a subscriber here :)
This is just what I need to edit a thingiverse model. But at 2:16 you right click and select edit. I don't see edit in the menu that appears after right clicking. Is it different now in 2022? Thanks Kev.
Hi Kev, take a look at my more recent video on editing STL files: ruclips.net/video/24SLlMnh4iE/видео.html
Thank you for making this video you helped me complete a project that i had been stumped with
Great tutorial!, just subscribed looking forward to more videos like this!
Awesome video and very helpful. Thank you very much!!
Thank you for this awesome tutorial, you helped me a lot! :)
I've been looking to do this on Fusion360 for awhile. Thank you!
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful.
Very helpful! Moving on to your high-polygon count video now...
Great, Thanks!
Got the insert STL file, but it does not have the Edit in option from RC. I get edit form, but not the new menu
I had to right click, and then select "OK", and then a further menu popped up.
thanks good video, I would like to see the video with high poly models
Thanks Hector. I will record that one soon.
Do you know why do you have to disable the Design History to convert it into a combinable body (BRep)?
Unfortunately when I do the "Erase and Fill" it just does the "Erase" part on my imported STL. It doesn't fill anything.
I'm still messing with it but wonder if you've run into this before and if so, how did you manage to get it fixed?
Thanks for the vide!!
when you made this video you should have noted your settings I just checked and it doesn't have the edit function so i'm curious what your settings were and if you were using beta functions,
Dear sir, Where to get the file ? Please could you upload the stl file here?
Thanks Vald that really helped ... Keep it up.
Exellent, helped me solve my problem.
Thanks, finally understood how to this.
I think you can use bi-directional on extrude there? :D
Great, I was just wondering how to do this. Thanks for the video.
This is nice!! you should do more videos.
That great! Thanks for sharing 👍
So did you print it out? How did it turned out?
How I use Fusion 360 to edit STL files:
Step the first: Download and install latest Blender release.
Step the second: Import and edit STL files in Blender.
Step the third: Export STL files from Blender.
Is it possiblez that this option does not work in the Education License version of Fusion 360 becauseI cannot edit STL files like you did?
when you extruded the cross, why did not you choose to extrude it on BOTH sides ?
How do you get the Do not capture in design history? When I right click on the body in the mesh workspace, I don't get the do not capture design history option. Is it a setting? I am having trouble figuring it out.

After I import an stl how can I convert it to a single solid body that I can then use the shell command with to hollow out?
Thanks man! Your video really helped me out.
Ok I tried this but when I send it back to cura it is way bigger than when it started. How do I keep the same size
Thanks much! This strategy works well.
Awesome for me as a noob! Thanks!
Thank you man this vid was helpful.

If you convert it to a brep first it should then let you select individual parts.
Thank You so muchWas able to use your tutorial to modify a Apple Watch iPhone charging station.
Very useful ! thank you
Great tutorial! thank you
hey i want to model a low poly animal in 360 then laser cut it, could you help or make a video doing something similar?
How to I convert to brep if my facets are too many?help me out as soon as possible please
You may have to to into the mesh workspace and reduce the number of facets first. Check out ruclips.net/video/Q1ZLe04X1-4/видео.html
I don't mean to hijack but another youtuber Lars Christensen has another way of doing this which worked for what i was trying to achieve. Both good ways to edit stl files.

where can i downloaf fusion 360 ?
can you edit stl files in AutoCAD?
Thank you so much
What are your computer specs?
Life saver!
Thank you the video, tried does not work. Get error "unable"
Thanks.
I cant see the edit icon why?
Are you still able to help me on this?
TL;Watching again: Insert STL file -> Edit mesh -> Finish mesh. -> Right click on name -> "Do not capture design history" - OK -> Right click on model -> "Convert Mesh to BRep" -> Select body. Re-enable Design history.
There is no edit option for me
Fusion 360 aborted the coversion. Saying me that : This mesh contains a large number of facets. What can i do ?
You should reduce the mesh.

Hi! Thanks for this excellent work!
I can't find the EDIT mesh command (at 2min20sec) .

little too long for my liking but nice video.
how do i see the the work space that says model??? i don't have that work space
There's been an update to the interface since I made this video. The Model workspace is now the Design workspace.
