Why was the older version ESC rubbish? I have a few of these and now I feel like I should check the version on the PCB? One which is installed seems particularly slow but it could certainly be something else in the setup like radio endpoints.
The older version doesn't have low rev or you can't modulate to run it slowly. Hence, no precision drifting. The response is also delayed. I pull the trigger and wait for some time until it starts to do something. This looks slow because I only touch the throttle to show you it can run the car slowly, which nearly none of ESC this size can. Also there's a wall immediately out of the camera and I don't want to destroy my car. If you see I pull the full trigger you'll know that it can run at full speed as well.
Only trim. But if you got it at 0 trim it should detect the throttle without any trouble. Otherwise your radio isn't compatible with this (I got this problem with Spektrum receiver).
Hi! I got WLtoys K989 with a new transmitter (with a display)And there is a delay between the moment you press the throttle and the moment the car starts moving. What can be the case? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't recommend those. Battery capacity is irrelevant, the problem is that it won't fit on the car and the weight will make the motor work too hard and burn out the motor + ESC. As small and good one is DumboRC 10A. You can find it in Aliexpress. It doesn't have cutoff but it has alarm. You'll need to install a small 5v buzzer for that and it'll beep when the battery is low.

You can use the car without it. The lipo alarm is needed so you don't over discharge the battery and break it. As long as you are aware of how much battery you have and don't overdraw it beyond 3.2v per cell (6.4v overall) it will be alright. The easiest way to know is to use a lipo alarm. But if you don't have or don't want to use that, you can check the battery regularly with a multimeter.
No, the original one is integrated ESC with the receiver in one board so it's not possible. The original ESC is pretty good already though. Unless you burn it then you can find a receiver for the original transmitter and use it with this ESC, result not guarantee because original transmitter doesn't have channel reversing and might not work.

Any help is appreciated :) ps. I’m using the esc that u recommended in this video.
Yes, you can solder the wires from the motor directly to the ESC. Check of the motor direction is correct first before doing anything so you don't have to swap the wires later.
Beaver's Hobby sorry what I meant was more of me having a cable with the female XH connector and soldering that to the esc? Or would what you said be easier? I’m just not understanding the part where I solder directly from the motor which is why I hadn’t tried it😅 thanks for your prompt response!
Beaver's Hobby yeah that’s what I was thinking, sort of. 😅 thx so much for your replies. I will most likely be attempting to solder the XH connector to the esc.
Thanks for all of your videos... great info for newbs! I just installed the same ESC for k989 using the FS-FT3c transmitter and his correspondent receiver. What happens to my is that i need to adjust the trim on steering at maximum for one side... and it still continues turning slightly to one side so i can't adjust it more and keeps turning. Can it be related to the ESC?
It's not from the ESC. I guess the neutral point is different so the arm is leaning to one side. Here's how to reset it: take the servo out, reset steering trim to 0, screw the arm (horn) out and put along with the bit that attach to the servo spline. Now power up the car along with the servo and shift the servo arm assembly to the other side. Try and put the arm back as straight up as possible. You can experiment with where to put the servo arm in to make it sit upright.
That's unfortunate. After this review I put it in a drift car and mine is still holding up really well however drifting doesn't draw much amps in the first place.
@@kastekniv885 Yes, this is very good for drifting too because it has good low-rev control. The other one is the DumboRC 10A. That one also has low voltage alarm if you install a buzzer on it.

So this one is the best huh? How about you tell us why! All you have proved in the video is that it can make your car go forwards and backwards... Oh yeah and it blinks...
I already mentioned it. It can go forward and backward smoothly at slow speed. Unlike some other ESC that starting speed is high and make it difficult to drift.
That's really strange. If you cycle through all the settings and none of it brings the speed back to normal then it's either the battery or the motor. Try another battery first if you have a small 2s lipo. The motor should not break this easily.

I wouldn't recommend those.
Battery capacity is irrelevant, the problem is that it won't fit on the car and the weight will make the motor work too hard and burn out the motor + ESC.
If you want to use those batteries I assume you have a bigger car and not this tiny, palm-size K989. A bigger ESC would be more suitable.
Do you have an alternative esc that is equally as good that have low voltage cut off?
As small and good one is DumboRC 10A. You can find it in Aliexpress. It doesn't have cutoff but it has alarm. You'll need to install a small 5v buzzer for that and it'll beep when the battery is low.
@@BeaversHobby i’ll look into it! Thanks beaver 🙏
@@BeaversHobby Looks like I can't source the jst xh plug locally, but they do have a female connector for a 2 pin lipo battery connector. Can I change the motor connector to that instead?
@@cityofplant Yes, you can. You can also solder the motor wires directly to the ESC.
@@BeaversHobby I just got the esc xD what kind of buzzer should I solder to it?
Is this one okay?

Is this Lipo alarm necessary? and can i use the car without it?
You can use the car without it. The lipo alarm is needed so you don't over discharge the battery and break it. As long as you are aware of how much battery you have and don't overdraw it beyond 3.2v per cell (6.4v overall) it will be alright. The easiest way to know is to use a lipo alarm. But if you don't have or don't want to use that, you can check the battery regularly with a multimeter.
Can i use this esc using k969 stock motor?
Yes, you can. This is for brushed motor, which the stock motor is.
@@BeaversHobby great!!..thanks for replying!!
Hmm, is it possible to do this with the stock transmitter/receiver?
No, the original one is integrated ESC with the receiver in one board so it's not possible.
The original ESC is pretty good already though. Unless you burn it then you can find a receiver for the original transmitter and use it with this ESC, result not guarantee because original transmitter doesn't have channel reversing and might not work.
@@BeaversHobby Thank you! Ordered brushless motor, esc and radiolink transmitter/receiver as you suggested in another vid :)
@@imp187 Already!? Not sure from which video you got the link but the latest one with speed test the ESC is too big for the car and you can't put the battery on properly.
Beaver's Hobby the XC-10A. Hmm I can just strap the battery in somehow I guess.
Beaver's Hobby and you are so helpful! You should start a patreon or Ko-fi or something!
Can this support a 32t PNracing motor?
I haven't got the PN 32T but based on my other tests with various motors I believe it can.
is this esc good for crawling?
No, it's not. It doesn't have drag brake so once you let go of the throttle on a hill the car will roll back.
@@BeaversHobby ah thanks 🙏
@@needtau4138 My pleasure.
Mine arrived - and there is no brake :(
Have tested both ways incase it was a reversed channel -
but it just goes from full forward to full reverse - and full reverse to full forwards, no braking at all
have messaged Baggood with photo's and video - so just beware that they have changed something and it is not good for cars now
It seems like you got a faulty one, either that or you got the boat version. Yes, contact banggood and see what they can do.
Do you know if this ESC is programmable?
No, it can't. None of the brushed ESC in this size is programmable.
@@BeaversHobby ok thats too bad.
Just converted my mini-z using that esc and I really do miss the smooth throttle response from the original esc.
Perhaps the only way forward is going brushless.
@@zeno6111753 Yes, if you want a programmable ESC in this size the only way to go is brushless. But that's not a problem since now there's DasMikro ESC (which is essentially PN Racing v1) and it's fantastic. bit.ly/3h07teH
@@BeaversHobby found it anywhere in the EU?
@@zeno6111753 There's only PN V2 available in www.minizracing.it/minizshop . It doesn't work with older generation motors like Surpass 1410 and Scorpion 1410. If you got Surpass Rocket or PN V3 and above it'll work.
I see you put tape on your lipo alarm. I did the same thing but with hotglue. Idk why there so damn loud.
Indeed! It's for outdoor vehicles so I can understand it has to be loud. But for indoor it's just too much.
They're meant for RC helicopters.
Is there a LiPo cut off on this ESC?
No, it doesn't have. As I said in the end you'll have to rely on lipo alarm or check it constantly.
Hi i buy it and brake doesn't worknig how i turn on it
There are different versions of this, if you reverse the throttle and it still doesn't have brake then I'm afraid they sent you the boat version and it doesn't have one.

Iam need ESC for motor 3 pins any?
If your motor has 3 wires then it's brushless motor. I highly recommend GL Racing ESC and Atomic ESC. They are a bit expensive but they work with every motor in this size.

Hey beaver just a quick question. I’ve never changed any wires for the esc. Is it possible to solder the female lead (including cable) onto the esc directly in order to use it to connect to the stock k989 motor? Thanks and sorry it’s a bit of a newbie question.
@@martintorres2799 Soldering the XH connector to the ESC is also really good way to do it because you can pull it out to for maintenance later easily.
Beaver's Hobby yeah that’s what I was thinking, sort of. 😅 thx so much for your replies. I will most likely be attempting to solder the XH connector to the esc.
@@martintorres2799 Best of luck!
@@BeaversHobby ok i see, so just a mechanical issue to correct. I'll try. Thanks a lot, i enjoy and learn with you videos.

That's unfortunate. After this review I put it in a drift car and mine is still holding up really well however drifting doesn't draw much amps in the first place.
@@BeaversHobby hi dude, do you recommend this esc for the wltoys k969 drift version too? Thx

@@BeaversHobby what esc would you recommend to build my 1:32 scale snowmobile
@@northernfreelance5788 Depends how big it is. This ESC also fit in other 1:32 cars too. But if it's bigger than your palm then you can consider Hobbywing 1625. It's even smoother than this one and it has lipo cut-off.
Hey beaver, i got one for ldrc 1802, motor is now slower than original at the high speed setting, can this be fixed to get high speed like before?
That's really strange. If you cycle through all the settings and none of it brings the speed back to normal then it's either the battery or the motor. Try another battery first if you have a small 2s lipo. The motor should not break this easily.
How do you change the motor plug
You can cut the motor wires and solder new plug to them.
Do the steering work go this?
Yes, the steering works. You'll need to install receiver. Please see this video for full upgrade/conversion to standard RC electronics (receiver-esc-servo).
How do you change the motor plug
How do I change the motor plug?
Cut and solder new plug to the ESC or just solder the wires directly to the motor.
Hi, can k989 original esc fit into a242 rc?
Yes. But beware the steering because K989 ESC allows more steering than A242 and there might be a problem with the servo throw. But it'll work.
@@BeaversHobby thank you for your respon bro.
@@WKRhomemade My pleasure.
@@BeaversHobby for the servo problem, can i use k989 servo to replace a242 servo?
@@WKRhomemade Servo is the same unit on both cars. It's the receiver inside the ESC that limits the throw on A252. You can solve this by moving the ball link on the servo horn down to lower position (stock position). But I'm not sure if the throw will still be too much with K989 ESC or not so you're gonna have to experiment with it.
