I understand what you must be going through. My father died of melanoma when i was 17 (now i am 32), and my mother has schizophrenia. So i missed out on a lot of advice and life lessons that i had to learn the hard way. Never be too afraid to ask questions to people. I often struggled with feeling like a failure for not knowing basic things that other people just seemed to know, until i realized the amount you miss out on if you are not able to have casual talks with your parents, or just sit at the dinner table with your family talking about your day or plans. So to anyone who is in a similar position, don't be too hard on yourself for not knowing things. People who do know these basic things that you might have missed out on, most likely learned them from their parents.

Pretty emotional right now. I just called a tire shop and the guy asked what kind of tire I had. I said “I’m not too sure” and he cuts me off and says “well I don’t know either and I can’t help you” and hung up. I feel really dumb. I’ve never had a chance to have my dad show me anything car wise and my mom doesn’t drive. I have low tire pressure so I have to go to the rude guys because they’re the closest to me but I feel so stupid like how could I not know what type of tire I have. I called back and nicely explained the type of car I have and just wanted a quote and he told me that’s “super silly.” I’m muscling up all my defeated, stupid feeling energy to go over there. It just brings back so much PTSD of feeling stupid and not knowing basic stuff and getting yelled at. Anyways, thank you for your channel and for showing all of us stuff we never got the chance to learn from dads.

I just want to say thank you, so much, for taking the time to do this. My father taught me so much growing up, stuff about cars, house repairs, etc. Anything I needed to know I would call him. He passed away in January of 2019 and I miss having his guidance for these types of things. It seemed like he knew a little bit of everything! Just recently I had to go to home depot to get a few screws and a new wax ring for my toilet. I dont know anything about plumbing, out of habit I was in the aisle and went to call him without thinking, and it hit me how I have to figure these things out alone now. My mother and I share a two family house, and I've always been the one who has to do the repairs for her, she cant even hammer in a nail, lol. My dad was my go to for things like that and I miss him terribly. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this channel, I truly appreciate it!

Aside from pumping gas and adding windshield wash, probably the easiest thing to do with adding / replacing something in a car would be replacing the wipers....if you know how to do it. Takes only a few seconds with no tools required. But, if you've never done it or watched someone do it, it can seem a bit complicated.

Just a quick tip I've seen my buddy who works putting tires for a living do; before he put the little cap back on the tire after he's finished filling it with air, he puts some drops of water where you connect the air compressor to check for any air escaping. (I hope what I wrote made sense! :) )

Thank you for telling people about the door placard for the air pressure. I work at a tire shop and you wouldn't believe the amount of people who inflate their tires to the maximum PSI of the tire that is written on the sidewall of the tire. Do NOT do that people. It's really bad for tread wear and as your tire ages and wears, it's not as strong and can blow out.

  • @Archergrl5
    @Archergrl5 4 года назад +59

I personally walk around and take all 4 valve caps off of all the tires and walk around with my gauge and read the pressures. If it's fine I put the cap back. Then I know which ones to fill after I get the station to turn it on. As long as you get gas, they must give you free air (at least in California as far as I know).
👍 Great idea explaining tire sizes

Quick note: if you have the tire light on and it doesn’t go away after filling your tires up, there could be three reasons. First you car may require you to reset your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) which is just the system that keeps track of the air in your tires; you can find that out by looking in your owners manual or looking up if your car requires it to be reset. The second reason could be because one or multiple of your sensors stopped working, which would most likely require a tire shop to fix (which isn’t too expensive $50-$100). Lastly if the light came on after getting new tires, it is possible that the new tires that were installed didn’t have TPMS Sensors on them, which will cause the light to come on.

Hi Dad! thank you for this. May I make a suggestion? Having a manual gauge maybe better in that you will always be able to use it since it has no battery that might die on you. You don't use one terribly often, and won't have to find a battery in the middle of the night! I have had the same manual gauge through 6 cars, and several car break-ins where everything was cleared out but that, no one wants the ole trusty!
Also, what the car manufacturers want for PSI and what the tire manufacturers want for PSI sometimes don't match. Being between the two numbers is good, but never above the PSI on the tires. You can show the tire info is near the tire size markings on the tires themselves. This was an awesome video, you are a great Dad and I look forward to seeing more. Cheers!

Might also note that if you are checking your pressure it best to check when the tire is cold. Driving will heat the air in the tire causing the pressure to read higher. Great information checking the driver door for the tire pressure.

I like this guy im glad he's teaching how to do stuff like this. I wasn't always able to be around my father growing up(long story). My grandparents raised me,and my grandfather tried to teach me as much as he could when he found out he was dying of cancer so that I would be able to help my grandma out after he was gone. But, he wasn't able to teach me everything a man should know especially the car stuff, and none of the other guys in the family ever taught me either. My great uncle did teach me some things too before he died he taught me how to paint a house or any building properly, how to use certain tools, how to weedeat, and few other things.

I saw a video ABOUT this guy on VidIQ. I watched a few - he's great! I also noticed - almost immediately - there are no ads. Not that I could find, anyway. Which means he's not monetizing it, he's just doing it.
    THAT is incredible.

Thank you! For this video and this channel. My biological dad walked out on my mom and me when I was 6mo, and later when I was 12yo, my step dad both walked out on my mom, me, and 3 younger siblings too. We have grown up w/o a dad. I'm 20 now, and very lost on a lot of things, but you're helping me out! Thanks!!

One thing you need to be aware of is that newer cars, like my 2016 Honda, only show "Tire Pressure Low" without telling you which tire is low. What is being measured is not the air pressure in each tire directly; instead, the sensor merely keeps a count of the tire rotations and reports when one tire is rotating more times than the others (because it is slightly smaller due to the low pressure). On my Honda, once you refill the tire to the proper pressure, you have to run the TPMS Calibration. (The car must be in Park to do this procedure.) Touch "Settings>Vehicle>TPMS Calibration" and then "Calibrate" on the touchscreen menu and click "OK". IMPORTANT: You must drive the car for about 20 minutes without turning off to calibrate. If you drive less time, you will just get the error message again. Note that the new air compressors at gas stations have an automatic feature for the pressure that you select. If you select "32 psi", then the compressor will beep loudly when you have reached 32 psi. Do this for all four tires to make sure they all start at the same pressure. By the way, always check and fill tires in the first few miles of driving, before they get too hot. In cold weather, all of your tires will lose pressure.

Bar and kPa are used in the metric system (Europe mainly) : 1 bar = 100.000 kP (kilo Pascal) . For example my recommended tyre pressure is 2,4 bar which is roughly 34 psi ( pound force per square inch ) . I find all the vids and the idea very wholesome and nostalgic . Thank you for taking time to do this

Europe uses Atmospheres as the standard air pressure measuring unit. I usually try to keep my tires between 2.1-2.4 atmospheres, which is about the same PSI values that Dad shows in this video. Nice work, Dad!

Hi RUclips dad!!!! First off, I want to thank you so much for starting this channel. Growing up without a father has left me with not knowing many skills a father teaches his children. Writing this brings me to tears as I have embraced your videos and think of you as an actual father figure who has taught me how to take care of things around my apartment. I do have one request! I am shopping for new tires, and I'm completely lost. Besides looking for a reasonable price and knowing the tire size I need, I am unsure how to determine which ones I should buy. The help you can give will be much appreciated.
