Dude, same. I went to mine when I was 13 so nervous and ashamed and waited until he was shaving in front of my mom before I asked super politely how to shave. He laughed at me out loud and said "what are you talking about!? You just have to grab a razor and shave!" My mom laughed too like I was an idiot.
It was years before I learned about dull razors, aftershave, ingrown hairs, and possible infections.

Any other grown ass men just come to tell this guy “Thank you”?
I had to RUclips how to tie a tie for my first few job interviews in grad school. It sounds stupid to people with any sort of father figure, but small stuff like shaving, changing a tire, or even learning to properly throw a football causes a lot of shame and resentment.

    I'm from China.
Although my father has accompanied me throughout my entire growth process, due to our country's conservative and restrained traditional values, my father has not taught me many common life skills.
Some are difficult to talk about, such as topics related to sex. Others are like shaving, where I missed the opportunity to learn it because I left home and went to school in another city when I needed to learn it.
Thank you very much for teaching me these basic knowledge. If I have a child in the future, I will definitely recommend him to watch your show.

Trivia: All the razors we use now are called "safety razors". That's because for a long time a VERY sharp knife was used, often folding into a case. I have my Grandfather's "unsafety razor". Would be really easy to cut open a vein ... or your throat! In fact they were called a straight or cut throat razor.
Oh, and very expensive. Most men either wore beards or went to a barber. A cut throat razor if you had one, could be resharpened for years of use.

Might have to get different blades if you always get cut. I use cold water alot when I do so and barely cut myself. Maybe 2 or 3 times every few months, not even. I don't mind spending the 30 dollars on a pack of good blades.

My father passed away of Liver Fibrosis when I was 12, he was my hero and I live by his words.
I have taught myself how to shave, to tie a tie, how to change tires, how to take care of my car, how to dress properly and the other basic stuff.
Btw, I am 30 now and I sometimes cut myself during shaving, and after seeing this video, I think my dad would have taught me to shave exactly like this. It felt like my dad was teaching me this and it was heart warming.

I had no experience other than legs, which is not the same at all!. I can tie ties, change tyres, fix washing machines, top up the oil, change a headlamp, do lots of diy tasks. Nothing else bothered me, but shaving the face every day is an experience I couldn't get for myself and pass on as a parent. Reading all the comments here, and especially yours, brought it all back! I love this! I’m a woman barber and I had to learn how to shave most men with a straight blade but this is super sweet for the young men needing the help.
Can I just add a couple things as a barber that I have learned.
1-if you put a hot towel in your face for a few minutes before saving you soften the hair and skin so you can reduce the chance of cutting yourself.
2- shave with the hair growth pattern first, if it grows down, shave down, if it grows up, shave up. Follow your cowlicks (yes you get them on your face too) and you won’t have near as much irritation.
3- for an ultra close shave once you have shaved with the growth, apply more cream or shaving gel and shave against the grain (against the growth pattern, if it grows down then shave up against it, and vice versa).
*pro-tip* if you apply more hot towels between step 2 and 3 for about 30 seconds to a minute you’ll also avoid irritation.
*another protip* once you have opened the pores, you MUST CLOSE THEM!!! You must use an after shave or salt stone or moisturizing after shave. If you don’t, you’re at risk for blackheads and pimples and so much irritation. Use a cold cloth with aftershave to close the pores and apply moisturizer on after you shave to your whole face. Men need to moisturize too!!

Hello! Can I ask though (am a lady) I thought you were supposed to just shave against the grain. Grows down, shave up, etc. and then go over it the other way? i mean i shave my pits literally every direction, because it grows every direction, but only shave my legs up, if that makes sense. My bf uses one of those double barrel shavers on his face and never a razor (senstitivity) but i'm sure he was shown to shave against the grain... which would make it more sensitive? i'm trying to understand hair growth vs shaving, here, lol.

    • @raskolnikov3799
      @raskolnikov3799 Год назад +29

@@El_pouleto shaving cream protects your skin while you’re shaving by softening the area. There’s less friction when the blade and your skin make contact so there’s less pain, less potential cuts, and a lower chance of itchiness/rashes.
Lots of soaps could work well enough if you don’t have access to the real stuff, but actual shaving cream would be better. I used lotion as a young teenager and it worked well enough 🤷.
Afterspray will help stop any potential infections from cuts (cuts don’t happen too often, and they’re almost never a big deal; it’s nothing to worry about) and help to reduce skin irritation.
Also, it wasn’t make explicit in this video, but while you’re shaving, only move in straight lines. You can follow the curves of your face safely, but don’t abruptly adjust angles or slide it sideways. The blade(s) are horizontal, so swiping across would give you a nasty cut. I damn near cut my head off the first time I shaved my face because I didn’t know that 😂.

As a 50 year old “dadless” woman, I always wonder how different would my life had been if I would have had “him”. I needed his presence so much at so many points. I grew up in a loveless house with an abusive and scorned mother figure that would always find the slightest opportunity to point out how faulty and useless (just like my dad) I was, which made me grow up with such a sense of not belonging anywhere, among many other unpleasant feelings. To this day, I still get teary-eyed when a see loving, caring fathers do cool things with their kids. I missed out on so much. Luckily, both partners I’ve had have been amazing fathers to our kids.

PRO TIP!!!: If you have a large or pointy Adams Apple like myself, I find what helps to keep from knicking the skin in that area is to look up and swallow and hold it, or swallow several times in a row. This helps to draw the Adam's Apple into the throat and flatten your neck so you dont knick yourself. ;)
