Great video, two points I would like to add. Calm sees are best for catching Mackerel from a beach. If the sea is rougher the Mackerel shoals will be further offshore usually out of reach. If you don't see the sea 'boiling' they can still be there just not hunting on the surface. In that case cast and let the feathers drop through the water before retrieving.

Cracking video, really enjoyed it. It’s worth saying that when the mackerel are chasing the Whitebait on to the beach, get a bag and collect as many as you can. They are absolutely fantastic to eat, especially if you eat some with a couple of fillets of mackerel. I freeze small bags full, I.e. enough for a meal. I fry them in a hot frying pan for about a minute in a little rapeseed oil and drizzle a little bit of butter just before taking them out of the pan and they are as good to eat as any fish in the sea. Never use olive oil to fry fish in as it ruins before it gets hot enough👍🏻
@@TheEastbourneFisherman absolutely and just remember that the pan must be almost smoking and they will go crispy in a few seconds. Then a little bit of butter and salt before bringing them out of the pan and they are sensational 😉👍🏻
I live in New Zealand, fish from a boat most weeks all year around. If you saw how any oil other than extra virgin olive oil was made, you would never ever eat it. I use extra virgin Spanish olive oil with butter, but don't get the pan smoking hot. Dust the fillet with flour 60 to 90 seconds a side perfect, but we are very lucky with snapper, kahawai and kingfish. Mackerel for us is bait, bit spoilt orobably
@@joedennehy386 you lucky lucky Devi you! For us here in the UK our mackerel are the tastiest fish in the sea and as such they really have to be looked after and cooked properly. With regards the use of cooking oil, even Rick Stein advises not to use olive oil, either virgin or other for frying! Actually the best medium for frying is good old fashioned lard with a lump of butter smeared on the fillet just before removing from the pan👍🏻 My wife never dusts the fillet with flour, but she does heat up the pan till it’s smoking hot, drops the fillet in the pan, skin side down, and then turns down the heat and fries it for 10 minutes and it’s fantastic 👍🏻 She fries my Bass and pollock in the same manner 😉

An excellent and informative video. Suprised that you didn't say anything about taking some of those whitebait back to eat, they're delicious.
Hi Tony thanks for watching :) if you skip to 11.05 in the video it will show what I mean - anglers refer to it as boiling of the sea (lots of splashes on the surface from the fish) cheers Im not a big fan of the white bait tbh good bait for dabs tho
I loved your video, and as a complete beginner and living 15 minutes from the coast this is on my todo list for September.. could you tell me the best time of day to go?.. i realise later in the days you may get swimmers and sunbathers etc.

I enjoyed watching your video, i been in chesil beach last Saturday and unfortunately all of my 5 lures and weight gone and snap off, I did not notice that my ceramic tip is broken. And also too much wave and windy.

Hi Filipe weather needs to be calm and sea clear There is a possibility the mackerel will return once the weather is calmer but atm its too windy and the sea is too coloured :)
Love the video and would love to fish there, but my recent expereinces of beach fishing have yielded no fish at all. How have I not found this video sooner? In Dorset where I am, the mackerel seem to be not so numerous, but I will keep looking for the boiling as you suggest!
First lesson for summer so called fishermen is to respect the nature, fish and don't leave any trash behind. During this time period the coast is the most disgusting place as a result of feather tossers!
The mackerel are chasing white bait Your feathers imitate the white bait fleeing. So when you reel and pause reel and pause that's what is replicating the feeding pattern and the mackerel will strike the feathers thinking it is white bait

hi, do you have to do this from the beach or can you fish from cliff rocks/ harbours?
Can fish from anywhere if they are there :)
An excellent and informative video. You kept saying that the sea was boiling with fish but unfortunately it didn't show on the video, I assume that most of those fish went back, as you caught so many.
Suprised that you didn't say anything about taking some of those whitebait back to eat, they're delicious.
Hi Tony thanks for watching :) if you skip to 11.05 in the video it will show what I mean - anglers refer to it as boiling of the sea (lots of splashes on the surface from the fish) cheers
Im not a big fan of the white bait tbh good bait for dabs tho
I loved your video, and as a complete beginner and living 15 minutes from the coast this is on my todo list for September.. could you tell me the best time of day to go?.. i realise later in the days you may get swimmers and sunbathers etc.
Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you found it useful
Best time I have always found is first light just before and after sunrise
Over the top of the high tide
Not many ppl around either
Hope this helps :)
I enjoyed watching your video, i been in chesil beach last Saturday and unfortunately all of my 5 lures and weight gone and snap off, I did not notice that my ceramic tip is broken. And also too much wave and windy.
On no was you using mackerel feathers or lures
I think Chesil beach may not be the best place to fish with lures
You need more reefy places or sunken boulders and structure
@@TheEastbourneFisherman feathers I'm just a newbie so I haven't done lure's but I seen on your view about the lures you been using, so I will try that soon
Great video. Thanks! Any advice on what the length of the shockleader should be?
Thanks so much :)
If normal bait fishing or feathering for mackerel with a 12ft plus rod
Usually it's twice the rod length plus a dozen turns round the reel
Asso do a tapered leader which is amazing
If lure fishing I tend to use about a 2ft leader of flurocarbon which hangs out the tip of my rod on the cast
Hope this helps
@@TheEastbourneFisherman cheers!
Nice…Welldone mate….where is the location in this video….I wanna go there and try for mackerels….you really motivated me mate😊
Cheers for your ace comment this was langney point in Eastbourne
However atm the water is too dark and nof clear so might not be good
Need hotter weather with no wind for few days for them to show properly again in high numbers :)
@@TheEastbourneFisherman thank you so much mate…hope one day I will see you there and learn from you. Cheers mate 👍
Stupid question maybe but I like eating white bait if I ever came across white bait beaching can I take that as well?
Yeah you can lightly fried is v nice check for cooking instructions on google :)
Crackin video, thanks very much. I went out and caught 10 just like that....cooked them up, delicious just with seasalt n pepper . Thanks for the excellent advice. Do you think its worth going out early October....west coast Scotland area?
Hi mate thanks for watching and your comment, im not sure in scotland as i have never fished there :) my facebook group uk & ireland sea anglers may be able to help you should join
Do you bleed them, if you do how, or dispatch them or none of the above? Nice video :)
Dispatch quickly by pulling head back
Mate this is the best starter video.. I'm just about to go fishing in the next few days either at Brighton or Eastbourne. This really helped me out, should I get a couple of rigs and weights incase I ruin or get snagged up.
Thanks mate :)
With mackerel fishing you will v rarley get snagged up as your casting and reeling straight in keeping it higher in the water.
But its always good to have spare bits incase you do loose something.
Happy fishing :)
@@TheEastbourneFisherman Thanks for the response much appreciated. I'll let you know how I get on.
Wait what’s the lure called the has 4 lures on the line? The one that you said about you liked the shrimp one, I want to get one but to get one online
I think they called sabiki
You made that look easy 😂
Some days it can be!
Hi Jason just wanted to ask if month of October there is more mackerel👌
Hi Filipe weather needs to be calm and sea clear
There is a possibility the mackerel will return once the weather is calmer but atm its too windy and the sea is too coloured :)
Love the video and would love to fish there, but my recent expereinces of beach fishing have yielded no fish at all. Do you fish along the beachfront at Eastbourne or Langley point and what is the best time of year to go? Its May now, but the weather is still unsettled and not to warm. When do the whitebait come in. Sorry, but I am a novice and have only been fishing a few times, so want some encouragement. :)
Hi Brian thanks for watching my video :)
All along langney point area you will catch fish
Lugworm is a good all round bait to start with and should see you well.
Mackerel tend to arrive once its constantly warm and settled weather most seeing them arrive in eastbourne from end of july through august, sometimes a bit earlier or later on occasions.
Happy fishing :)
@@TheEastbourneFisherman Thanks for the info/encouragement. Mid may and the weather is looking good for the next few weeks (famous last words! :) so I will try to get there from Guildford when I know the weather is favourable. Must remember to bring my sun factor 50 and a hat though.. :) Bri
loved this video, i watch it every week
i went to mackerel fishing with my cousins coz they got a van,
now i wanna go on my motorcycle
so i want to ask,
can i go mackerel fishing with a telescopic 10ft rod? wich i can fit on my backpack?
Thanks so much for the feedback
100 percent you can fish with a telescopic rod :)
@@TheEastbourneFisherman cool
thank you very much, saturday, will go to eastbourne, hope im lucky as you :)
no luck,
been eastbourne, seaford, peaceheaven, brighton, hastings,
no fish at all..
done over 600 miles in 2 days
yesterday went back at eastbourne and seaford no one catch a fish..
Great video. Is it best to fish on full tide .thanks
2 hours before high to 2 hours after
Happy fishing :)
@@TheEastbourneFisherman thanks. Love the channel, just subscribed.
Great video, really helped as I want to take my kids this summer. Is it shock or shot leader and how long should that be?
Thanks
Shock leader as it takes the impact (shock) of the cast
Asso tapered leaders I have found to be the best :)
Did you use to fish in Newhaven? You look very familiar! I've just gone to Peacehaven Angler and got my wife a rod and reel for mackerel, I should still have some rods in the garage for myself. You said July to September is Mackerel season, when would you suggest to be the best time to go fishing though? We're taking our 6 year old, that's why I ask. Very helpful video too, got a lot of information to start fishing again! Subbed to the channel too!
Hi mate :) fished newhaven a few times not my regular tho.
For mackerel 2 hours before high tide to 2 hours after usually best times.
Happy fishing :)
@@TheEastbourneFisherman I was reading the comments and finding advice and hints from others too and saw your name, if you own a couple of gorgeous Fiestas then that'll be where I remember you from, along with a car club from 10+ years ago 😂
Perfect, I'm hoping I'll be out tomorrow fishing for the first time in a long time, it's been so long, I was clueless about how to set up a decent rig but this has helped so much, fingers crossed for a good session 🤞
Hello. You’ve mentioned putting either a 2oz lead sinker or a spinner at the end of the line. Most of the dexter wedges I’ve found online are less than 2oz, will these suffice?
Hi thanks for watching 14 to 25g will be fine just to add a bit of weight onto the feathers :)
Try using a 1/4 or 1/2 oz. Swim bait instead of sinker, you'll be pleasantly surprised 😊
Cheers mate will give it a go :)
Great video! I've been told that you fish 2 hours before high tide, then 1 hour at HT, then 2 hours as it goes back out..is this correct? Thanks
Hi Michael thanks mate :)
Yeah thats when i fish 👍
2 hours before to 2 hours after
Early mornings are good too :)
great video and tutorial. im travelling to cornwall in a month and was thinking about trying to catch some mackerel down there. . would i need a license to fish in the sea? .
Thanks Paul :)
NICE one you will deffo catch in Cornwall 👍
You do not need a licence to fish the sea in the UK
However if targeting sea trout you will need to obtain a licence for this
Thanks mate so want to try a catch n cook. im new to this and love the outdoors more bushcraft than fishing . but its just another feather to my cap. keep up the great advice and videos ..
@@TheEastbourneFisherman
Hey! Thank you very much for your instructions, just ask, do we need a license for sea fishing like you did for today?
No licence my friend in the UK
Dry good mate
are mackerel still out late september? im new to fishing and in north east UK
Vary from location to location i would speak to your local tackle shop or head on over to our facebook group
UK & IRELAND SEA ANGLERS
Where we may be able to help more
How have I not found this video sooner? In Dorset where I am, the mackerel seem to be not so numerous, but I will keep looking for the boiling as you suggest!
They should be there this weekend :) fish over the High tide :)
First lesson for summer so called fishermen is to respect the nature, fish and don't leave any trash behind. During this time period the coast is the most disgusting place as a result of feather tossers!
I completly agree with you the "SUMMER" anglers make us look shameful with the litter that is left behind :(
That sort of behaviour drives me nuts. I always pick up what I can, but far from able to pick it all up.
Ahhhh got it.
Please let me know where the location is in Eastbourne for Mackerels Fishing Thank you
Bit too late now most have gone further out
So is this how it's done when fishing for mackerel? You just cast the line out and then reel it back in and cast it out again?
Yes mate that is it
Cast out
Reel in
Stop the reel
Then start again
Some people sweep the rod to the side on the stop
Then carry on again
@@TheEastbourneFisherman that's amazing, why do it like that though is there a reason why?
The mackerel are chasing white bait
Your feathers imitate the white bait fleeing. So when you reel and pause reel and pause that's what is replicating the feeding pattern and the mackerel will strike the feathers thinking it is white bait
@@TheEastbourneFisherman great! Thanks so much!
Hello, can you tell me in which month it is best to catch it, please
Depends on location some places all year round.
Eastbourne end june - maby end sept depending on weather
can you catch anything other than mackerel with feathers?
You will pick up the odd bass too :)
Is this place Eastbourne Fishing pier?
Eastbourne beach
Could you provide me the post code of this place. I would like to go there and catch Macrel in July time.
Just head to the beach and try it no post code mate u will catch all way through

Hi so you tell me you will eat all this fish
Hi thanks for watching
Yes you can eat mackerel very nice 😀
Great fun but when you have enough put some back! When they've all gone in the future your conscience will be clear. The commercials have devastated the shoals!
Absolutly obliterated :(
However saying that this year is the best year i have fished for mackerel re numbers wise
@@TheEastbourneFisherman Agreed. and some good sized mackerel as well! I would like to think lockdown and the wind farm are having some effect.
I truely HOPE that MOST of they fish WERE put Back ??? Only a few were of GOOD size.
Cheers for your comment
If you achally watch the video you will see that I give the size on a ruler of fish which are allowed to be kept
As a responsible Angler I fish to these sizes and measure every fish I take for consumption as in accordance with the southern ifca guidance on fish retention 👍
