      When there are huge shoals even bare hooks work. Unfortunately most of the time these days the shoals are small and broken up. Just as you get a few fish they are gone again.

  • @johnfurness2346

    Just found this, just ordered the sleeving from Ebay, black and red, and the hooks, so will be making my own, as I was buying them for around just over a pound for a string of daylight lures, I think I have that down to 80p for a 4 hook trace, not a massive saving but its theraputic and I trust my own knotts more than factory produced rigs.
    I am based in the North East, mackerel have finally arrived, but no great numbers yet, but I did mange to catch an 11lb 4 ounce ling yesterday (not on the feathers) on a muppet baited with a whiting fillet!

    Don't forget to emphasize only keeping what you need! Last season I kept only 12 for the winter bait ( it wasn't enough) but In the days when I caught Hundreds - many years ago now- I only kept what I needed. They are a disappearing species - thanks to the FACTORY SHIPS.

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 года назад +4

      We tend to release any small to medium mackerel and just keep the bigger ones. This will just be a flush of large fish for a couple of weeks then they disappear somewhere else till next year. If we get near to catching more than we require we will go and fish for something else on these days we could have landed way more but simply did not.

      I worried about keeping 1 or 2 more than a dinner worth, then I watched a program on BBC where they were basically hoovering them out of the net, it was awful. Losing all our UK fish for a Japanese buyer. Really sad to see. I only started mackerel fishing this year and keep hearing stories from all the old boys of how it's change dramatically in the last 2 years.

    • @kerryfoster1

      @@bennyhaslonghair Yes they trap the shoal with purse seine net big enough to engulf a cathedral then hoover them up with a giant suction pump.
      They should be forced by law let at least half the shoal go.
      Mackerel could well become endangered! The most prolific fish in the sea😣😣😣😣😣

    We take a good sized ice cool box with freezer blocks, wrap them in a tied poly bag to keep them clean , under a layer of kitchen towel on the bottom , stops any freezer burn to the lowest fish in the box, then as we catch them we gut them and fillet them , fling the guts n heads over board , makes a good chum line and particle drop to keep the mackerel interested local to the boat.
    Once home you can then give them a quick rinse and bag them for the freezer, since mackerel guts start going off and tainting the flesh once dead, it keeps them in good nick and also keeps stinky guts n heads out of the bin, in the hot summer weather. Unless you intend to keep all that good oily mess for freezing into chum blocks.

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 года назад +1

      If I ever take them for bait I always gut and freeze asap then they are really firm when used. I have never understood why bait shops sell them with the guts in.

    hi Troj- you great. i like DIY best. interesting with the colors. maybe there are differences in different regions? : black n red?- I think its not as good as a lure with silver glitter, at least here on island of sylt, germany. white seemed to be first choice with silverglitter-flash-material. some uv, or flou-pearls in morning and evening..
    but now i ll try to make one with red n black, as you propose,
    but i ll add some flash or feathers, playing in the current..
    tight lines;-)

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 года назад

      I think a lot of colours & glitter are very dependant on water depth and clarity. Here now the mackerel are going deep 150ft 180ft so silhouette is important.

    • @fabianronck4575
      @fabianronck4575 2 года назад

      @@Trojwaterman ah-yeah- the rules of colors are the same for every fish as it comes to physics. the silouette-yes- thats what i thought with black.
      and red is the camouflage in deep water. now i got idea for shallower water: clear-crystal flash with light red or rose,or to match the environment light sandy-yellow maybe, or in more natural colors on back,olive or so.
      as always: with sun, clear water in shallow you have to work hard, to match the hatch... i saw sylt angler who changed three times a day colors from kinda pink -chartreuse in dusk to silver chrystal the day, back to pink-chartreuse in dawn, so same rules as for perch and so on... tight lines troy- catch a big one- i am a little jealous for your possibilities- so enjoy to be on a boat or a beach that often. its so precious,even to breathe the air at the sea, or to know(and do) how to get healthy food from nature.
      big up and thanks for your tips- i learned stuff about foraging: new to me: i don t even know if there is a word in german for it.
      i try maybe some out, i just found oysters and ""miesmuscheln"-that small black clams-i don t know engl. name.
      peace in , peace out

    I use mackerel as bait for fishing

  • @joedennehy386
    @joedennehy386 2 года назад

    In New Zealand we use sabiki rigs with fish skin to catch them. Hyabusa are the best. We use them for livebaits and cut baits. Why doesn't that boat have rod holders on the rail. Far easier to take the fish off, if you don't have to hold the rod. No ice slurry?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 года назад

      To many ropes flying over the side with the lobster pots so I don,t use them. We use frozen Ice bottles in seawater plus we are often back before breakfast not out all day in the sun :)
