This was a very special video for Jim and I and we hope to be able to do more catch and cooks on the boat together soon. Have a wonderful day everyone and take care. 👍🏻💙
I have mentioned this to Jim and he has just retired after a lifetime of work so is looking to wind down his workload. Right now he is happy to add to our channel. Who knows, in time he may want to do his own. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker Well he certainly does "add" to the channel 😊 His cumin and tumeric beer battered fish with mango chutney mayonnaise is now a regular at our table, usually with Rig (like your Smoothound) or Snapper (similar to your Couch's Bream)
I cannot describe the enjoyment of watching you both out on the boat and then the magic Jim works in the kitchen, thank you both so much for a new look at why I should hurry up and get fishing in the sea.
Great seeing you and Jim on the boat together and I love it when Jim puts you in check at the dinner table - “no John you have to eat the skin as well” 🤣🤣 you can see his passion for cooking and the memories it brought back for him. Great job guys 👍🏼
Like a millpond John. I’ve always found watching Jim in the kitchen to be very calming, like sitting with your grandparents and listening to the clock tick on the wall. Such a lovely gentleman.
Awesome session on the boat, great catch and cook up, lovely variation of flavours and methods, cheap fish turned into posh nosh, what a team John & Jim #Tightlines
This absolutely the best video by far!!! The special relationship you have with Jim, moves me so deeply. You're such a dear man to be so patient and engaged when you speak to him. Also with your son James, I just realized. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos. 😊
This video was a real treat in several ways. Good to see you and Jim out on the boat together. It was fun to see all the meal creation for herring and mackerel and the side dishes. Lastly the eating and description of the dishes and a sit down together for a meal was delicious 😋. Thank you so much 😊
You're an inspiration, John. I watch all your videos with my dad. I've taken your knowledge and used it in my own fishing. Such a great presenter - you certainly should have your own show on TV.
Absolutely found the Mackerel and Herring catch, clean and cook episode extremely interesting! Being an American here in Wisconsin, U.S.A. , the preparation methods are something I'd love to try in my kitchen. I was unfamiliar with some of the preparation ingredients, but I may try some substitutes using the methods I saw Jim using. I love the " On the water" fishing videos. But once in awhile seeing how those fish are prepared would be interesting. Another very informative video, John. Because of my health I can no longer travel. But watching Your videos is a real adventure for me! Thanks Again!
Absolute pleasure to watch, the commentary from you both was top notch. Never cease to be amazed by Jim’s talent. The food made my mouth water, hope to see much more of this type of content. Thank you both so much, take care👏👏👍
This brings back so many cool memories with my dad and me, out in his 5-man dingy, feathering for mackerel off the Noth Devon coast, Watermouth Harbour, between Coombe Martin and Ilfracombe. We could only stay out for an hour or two at most and the boat would be filled with fish. I'd then walk around the camp site, Big Meadow, with my sisters and sell the excess to fish to other campers, 10p a fish. Ahhhh, the glorious smell of fresh caught, BBQ`d mackerel. Happy, HAPPY days indeed. 😊
I am in California and these videos have totally got me possessed!!!!! I must head to the northern California coast and start mucking about. I love shellfish of all kinds and Fish Locker Dude explains what you're looking at and looking for. The idea of bringing a small camping stove, digging up some amazing seafood, and feasting is so very cool. KInd of like gold prospecting. Excellent videos!!!!
You guys have a quite good chemistry for father/son-in-laws😂. I am glad for you John, I wish that I am that lucky, and I look forward for more of you guys. Great video, good food, and the fishing part was almost not necessary.
Happiness is a full belly and a good day on the boat. Thank you for teaching me so many flavour combination! Thank you again for fishing AND cooking lessons.
Old skool traditional cooking of your own caught fish is always a win, BUT you've godda feel lucky having Jim to cook the gourmet stuff for you, great side pairings...you sure know how to make someone hungry and wanna go fishing all in the same video don't you. Spot on as ever John all the best, keep on enjoying life its great!👍
Every video you upload has something different and this was no exception. From catching the fish to the creative cooking it's a marvellous adventure. Creativity in the kitchen to the actual dishes served make this a real treat for us the viewers. Well done to both of you and thanks for posting.
Great to see Jim out on the boat for a wee change. That was a masterclass in pairing side dishes to oily fish! Fantastic choice of preparations for the fish too. Utterly mouthwatering. 👍
That is a really great video, loved both the fishing and the cooking, you’re a lucky guy John having a father-in-law like that, looks like you have a great friendship. The food looks fantastic, mackerel is my favourite eating fish, and Jim cooked them beautifully!
Great video upload. Showing videos like this are seriously useful since both Mackerel and Herring are affordable and easily accessible fish for the average person like me to buy. How you guys prepared and cooked them too provided that much needed inspiration and has helped me to deviate significantly to how I would ordinarily cook these. An entertaining and enjoyable video to watch throughout. Thank you for sharing.
It is our pleasure Paul. The reason we experiment so much with recipes is to provide people with alternatives and new experiences. Best wishes and have a wonderful day. 😊👍🏻
Thanks John, and Jim, that was lovely as always, always a pleasure to watch, always something to learn. It’s been so long since i got out on a boat, so long in fact we struggled to catch Mackerel for bait, glad to see the stocks are back round the South West. My brother and I always had a bag of seasoned flour, a stove and a pan, bit of oil, there’s nothing tastier than a fresh ‘joey’ filet, straight off the hook and into the pan. Delicious healthy and under rated species. Thank you!
What a great pair you 2 are !!!!! Oh boy, what a chef Jim is - takes the most humble ingredients and without any posing nonsense produces food that I can smell through my screen - just brilliant. I am so happy to subscribe and get cracking on these recipes.

This must be the perfect vlog! Beautiful morning... great fishing... lots of tips and then Jim cooked up an absolute storm! Fun fact: back in the day women would follow herring down the east coast to fillet gut them and put them in barrels to sell. To get the job they would have to fill a barrel and the boss would then take the rings off and let the boards fall away. If the herring stayed in the shape of the barrel you got the job if not that was that as they would not pay for you to travel from Eyemouth right down to Ramsgate following the fish!
