  • Is the Porsche Taycan still the ultimate performance EV ? A simple question that need a proper test. I took the Taycan on a road trip to see how far I could get on a charge, took it to an ultra rapid charge and of course did a launch control !

Some important points you raised which many non-EV commentators don’t realise, or media report which isn’t real world case.
-> People get these cars on business schemes and are not paying RRP, or losing nowhere large amounts of money.
-> Charging discounts - many EV makers offer charging point discounts. I also get discounted rates. So the advertised higher price per kWh is rarely paid.
You are the first RUclipsr I’ve seen actually mention and use the Porsche Ionity discount.

For a Porsche the depreciation is steep, as many ICE ones (Porsche 911 / Cayman / Macan)) hold 50%+ after 8-10 years. But any large saloon (German premium ones) depreciate heavily anyway….so it’s a great bargain really, if you are so inclined. Keep up the good work Pete.

I've had an EV for nearly two years, and if you're a rare person that drives up and down the motorway every day for hundreds of miles, then they're probably not for you. If however, you're normal and do routine journeys, driving around the country now and again to visit relatives and friends, then I find you charge at home 95% of the time. Which on Octopus means night charge rate of .07p a kw, so over 300 miles for less than £5. People do worry about there being enough chargers, but seem to forget that vehicle range's are rapidly increasing and the need to charge on the move is quite infrequent.

    • @FFVoyager
      @FFVoyager 3 месяца назад +1

Strangely my wife has recently bought an EV because she does drive up and down motorways a lot - so far in the first 6 days of October she's done about 700 miles and it's cost her £21 to charge (at home and at Superchargers). In her old Volvo S90 that would have been more than £100 in fuel.

Also, the general public's perception of public charging infrastructure is greatly misinformed. When charging my car yesterday at Ionity Metrocentre, I went for a walk in the 20 minutes I was waiting for it to charge (15-80%). Passing nearly all of the chargers at Metrocentre which includes over 30 rapid / ultra fast chargers and another 50 AC chargers, in the small snapshot of time I was there the number in use were....5, including my car! This perception of massive queues, none available and not working chargers is just nonsense, sensationalisation at best.
One could argue they're not being used due to cost and I don't know how much the likes of Zest charge as I have an Audi / Ionity subscription so wouldn't need to use them but they are there and they exist. And that is just one shopping centre.

@@graemecollie9233 I've had a second-hand 28kWh Ioniq for more than 3 years and I've had to wait to charge precisely once and then it was only for a few minutes because I wanted to use an Osprey charger I had 'free' credit for!
The times there are likely to be queues are public holidays at mealtimes on major routes. Plan to avoid them and it's not likely to be a big problem.

Well if you had this Taycan or a VW Id.7 and would have to drive motorway 400 miles a day to job/while working. You could maybe charge at work or charge for 15-20min at a DC fast charger and you would save around 50£ per workday in fuel! so would you rather refill an extra 10min a day or lose 15-20,000£ a year?

And/or get a longer cable fitted, so that it can reach cars parked outside of the garage. My own chargers have purpose made 10 meter cables fitted to reach anywhere on the forecourt.

One of the long term questions is battery life/health. Fast charging is something you can only do with the correct C Rate battery. I hope the battery tech in this newer car is suitable for long term fast charging. If not expect the battery range to slowly reduce..

If someone gifted me a Taycan like this one I certainly wouldn't say no but, as a personal purchase, it just doesn't make financial sense, at least not for a new one. After watching some of your videos I did, however, put a deposit down on a 718 Boxster S in Miami blue, which I pick up next weekend (12th Oct). A GTS was going to be too expensive to insure my 21yo son on (he'll be sharing the car with me. I retire 2 days before we collect it, so it'll be mine when my son's working, and his when he's off) but the car we're getting is really well spec'd so I'm sure we'll enjoy it. Oh, and I noticed we've both got the same Oakley glasses :-D Looking forward to more videos, all the best!

Hello Petrol Ped from San Diego! Good to see your garage remodel look's to be almost finished! With regards to that Oak Green color, I do agree it's a stunning choice especially because it's so rare to see on Porsche's. I remember going by the local Porsche dealer one day back in the early 80's and they had a pre-owned 911 in Oak Green with a camel leather interior and I was smitten. Not a big fan of any EV so the Taycan really isn't my cup of tea, but they do have wonderful exterior styling. I believe Mrs. Ped enjoyed driving the BMW M240i a little more judging by her reaction to both, and the M240i also has a comfy place in the back for the pups. That's the more interesting drive(or an M2) for way less money if you don't mind the controversial styling. IMHO Cheers!

Yes..the "estate" version would be a smidge nicer, but this is perfectly fine. A car is great if it can relax a pair of dogs. 😆🤣
What more can be said? It's an EV, it's painted green, the chocolate brown interior looks so welcoming (just like any chocolate would be...), and it's not an anonymous, grey SUV/CUV. Along with Traci's and the Petrol Pups' seals of approval...this car's a good'un!

Hello Peter! My goodness…that is some car and we got back last night after three days in The West Midlands…NEC - Coventry- Leamington Spa - Stratford upon Avon and I saw three identical cars to your test car. All were RX24xxx so I guess Press cars and all exactly the same. I’m old and a private buyer so a new one is crazy impossible but a used one..all that would stop me is the physical size and low body height..Hilary cannot get in it. We took Hilary’s Puma and that was good news in the car parks but the Taycan would struggle a lot in that respect. Another aspect…Leamington seems to have a bit of a car cruising theme and to me, hearing a young beardy guy revving and blipping a Jaguar F Type and a woman doing the same in a 24 plate M3 Touring made themselves look rather stupid. The Taycan..looked reserved, cool, understated and far, far more impressive. Later….a fast start by an old Mazda RX7 filled the road with horrible fumes…no Castrol R delights, just burnt old petrol and oil….it was horrible. So yes…I’m an EV convert yet I have my PHEV…next time…a depreciated EV of some sort might well be there but I only like the Taycan or even better..the new E-Tron GT RS….now readers…I have owned 76 cars…petrol has filled my life…but an EV might be the final fling! Well done Peter and of course, young Tracey for a real world challenge….EV’s have challenges but for some, they really work! Stay safe…😃😃😃😃😃Richard

Not knowing much (anything) about EVs I’m rather taken by the Taycan..not so much the fantasy price though. What a stunning colour and with a lighter tan interior it would be spectacular. Quick question…if the Porsche / Ionity charging station can offer 350kw and the Taycan can accept it what’s the reason it topped out at 280kw charging speed? Also why stop at 80% as opposed to a 100% and by doing so reduce the range to 240 miles…assuming you’re brave enough to run it down to 0% which surely nobody would do? Thanks for a good video.

Could someone explain whether the battery technology is the same as in mobile phones? I know they both charge quickly to a high percentage then slow down to prevent from overcharging. But it has always been said that for 'mobile' battery efficiency they are best run down to as close to zero% as possible and then charged to 100% to keep the life to its maximum due to batteries having a memory built in.
