- Is the Porsche Taycan still the ultimate performance EV ? A simple question that need a proper test. I took the Taycan on a road trip to see how far I could get on a charge, took it to an ultra rapid charge and of course did a launch control !

Some important points you raised which many non-EV commentators don’t realise, or media report which isn’t real world case.
-> People get these cars on business schemes and are not paying RRP, or losing nowhere large amounts of money.
-> Charging discounts - many EV makers offer charging point discounts. I also get discounted rates. So the advertised higher price per kWh is rarely paid.
You are the first RUclipsr I’ve seen actually mention and use the Porsche Ionity discount.
see the McMaster. He has covered this for some time.
For a Porsche the depreciation is steep, as many ICE ones hold 50%+ after 8-10 years. But any large saloon (German premium ones) depreciate heavily anyway….so it’s a great bargain really, if you are so inclined. Keep up the good work Pete.
They give what they think is reasonable to expect on all Porsche models giving the exception of limited special editions that 55% loss in value over the first three years then you can expect 6-7% next few years then down to something like 4-5% depending on use and mileage.
My old '91 MK2 Golf GTi 16v was Oak Green. Great car, great colour
Nice 👌
Yes, really suits the mk2 Golf
Hi Pete, the fastest charging curve for a 350kw charger on the Taycan gen 2 is about 5%-62% . Stopping to charge at 20% is a bit early. Run it done to 5% then charge to just over 60%, unplug and move on.
👍
@@PetrolPed also Oak Green Metallic Neo is still slightly different to the original PTS Oak Green Metallic.
I think it does the 5-62% in 12 minutes. Incredible.
Love it that you didn’t argue with Mrs PP, when she was sat in the drivers seat! We know our place…lol
They did a Oak Green Mk2 Golf GTi. Seems a bit lighter than that from memory.
About 1300kg lighter 😂
Glad Porsche gave you the PCS this time Pete, it makes the whole ownership experience far better and in some instances where people don't have access to home charging, can be as cost effective as if they did.
It sure did 👍
If I ever wanted one, I would get one that is still relative newish (70 plate) that is available for around £60-£70k (50% depreciation).
Yep 👍
That interior screams 928.
Another interesting, understandable video, Peter. Great to see Tracy and 'The Pups' involved, not to mention Steve the builder. Almost made me cancel my order for a 911 Turbo. Ha ha, back on planet Earth I'm off to Sainsbury's in my Niro!
Beautiful colour Ped, reminds me British racing green, Jimmy Clark’s lotus…
It does!
What a nice road trip that was! Clearly you two and the pups had a nice weekend away, and what a nice car to take! And yes, the colour is very very nice! Just not quite as nice, in my op, as my V6 Cavalier, which was a pearlescent green called Nautilus. It didn't exactly flip, but at certain angles, blue and green kind on melding together was awesome!
Excellent video Ped, and a complete contrast to the other guy who has one of these, and seems to have problems and issues everywhere he goes in it! 😁😁
👍
Because unlike Schmeeeee, Ped is not a drama queen.
@@dimsoneillMight not be Tim there is a other guy who’s clips in truth are dreadful he likes drama, he as a Taycan and just bitches about it but it’s to play for a certain audience but it doesn’t really work as he just comes over as a prat. If it’s the guy I’m thinking he deliberately stayed at one of the worst hotel use to bitch about it and his pal drives a old Volvo that looks crap and doesn’t offer the comfort of a modern Car but seemingly we should all be driving Diesel E Aimee it’s his choice, he’s a prat too and his content is desperate because well he’s not to interesting and just parrots bad EV news.
Fabulous colour combination and wow what a car. I agree the cross turismo is the one I’d go for as well and at 300 miles per charge range anxiety is somewhat mitigated. Your builders face was a joy 😂
Oh well Ped,that's Mrs Peds Christmas present sorted,Well done.👍👍
Wow! What An Amazing Car, The Colour Is Perfect. Cheers For All Your Hard Work Mr. Petrol Ped ... 👏👏👏
I would very much enjoy THIS Taycan, as is, really. I like the looks; the dark colour masks the black plastic bits that hang down from the outer corners of the headlamps. I've never liked that look; it appears as though the car is weeping. A light colour would just kill it for me.
Yes..the "estate" version would be a smidge nicer, but this is perfectly fine. A car is great if it can relax a pair of dogs. 😆🤣
What more can be said? It's an EV, it's painted green, the chocolate brown interior looks so welcoming (just like any chocolate would be...), and it's not an anonymous, grey SUV/CUV. Along with Traci's and the Petrol Pups' seals of approval...this car's a good'un!
Cheers Jim 👍
They do need to get a grip/control on pricing in public. 70 80 and 90p per kwh is frankly crazy
I agree 👍
But then as a country we need to get a grip of our electricity unit price, we have renewables everywhere now and battery storage but we don’t see the benefit in our bills. Decoupling the renewables price from Gas production electric and the fact it’s set at its dearest generation point - Gas. But charging 8p per kWh with 🐙 at night for the win. I’d use the Car more.
@SWR112 yes I hate the default answer of we are subject to market prices .....honestly fck off. Too many making too much money more like
In 5mins I have 550miles , so 6600 miles an hour 😂😂😂
A really impressive car with a fantastic specification. Not sure how much a practical car it is but shows what EVs can do!
Mk2 Golf GTI 16v looked the best in Oak Green metallic back in the day.
Steve wasn't actually ready... 😂
I particularly like the charging display showing it fluid at the top, as EVs slow like as if we were filling a cup fast. We would need to slow to fill to %100
Still crazy for the charging, as a Brit living in Japan, I can fill up my 59L tank with RON98 for only £50 and within 2 mins.
It's the Turismo for me and I agree as that colour is just beautiful 😊
Really prefer the front of the RWD & 4S. Looks like the new Taycan does fix everything that was less stellar in the first gen.
Apart from the lack of a one pedal drive which I'd miss a bit.
Oh yes, as I'm in my 70s now, I would choose the more practical option from the Porsche range. I need to be able to get at least one MTB in the back, though I don't have dogs, so, hmm, yes, the Taycan will be just right. I love anything with 911 in it's name, but bikes in the back? Hmm.
Lovely car. I quite like the truffle but think it could benefit with some carbon or another colour to break it up a bit.
If someone gifted me a Taycan like this one I certainly wouldn't say no but, as a personal purchase, it just doesn't make financial sense, at least not for a new one. After watching some of your videos I did, however, put a deposit down on a 718 Boxster S in Miami blue, which I pick up next weekend (12th Oct). A GTS was going to be too expensive to insure my 21yo son on (he'll be sharing the car with me. I retire 2 days before we collect it, so it'll be mine when my son's working, and his when he's off) but the car we're getting is really well spec'd so I'm sure we'll enjoy it. Oh, and I noticed we've both got the same Oakley glasses :-D Looking forward to more videos, all the best!
As an EV owner I suggest moving the home charger close to the Garage doors so that you don't need to put a car into the Garage merely to put it on charge on a cold wet night, whilst filling the garage with cold air. And/or get a longer cable fitted, so that it can reach cars parked outside of the garage. My own chargers have purpose made 10 meter cables fitted to reach anywhere on the forecourt.
I wonder what is the real world range of a similar petrol Porche on one tank of Petrol !
Public charging rates are a scandal. Clearly the market is not competitive enough.
Electro Ped!?!?! You know when you've made it when you also have a Tardis in your garden !
Or a Turdis 😂
@@PetrolPed 🤣🤣
You was only a few mile from my house at when you went past the dormy house and you didn’t drop by to have a cuppa and show me the car! But never mind I’m in your neck of the woods this week, don’t bother putting the kettle on😂😂
One of the long term questions is battery life/health. Fast charging is something you can only do with the correct C Rate battery. I hope the battery tech in this newer car is suitable for long term fast charging. If not expect the battery range to slowly reduce..
love the oak green but not gone off chocolate inside altho the seats look the same as my 928s
Hello Petrol Ped from San Diego! Good to see your garage remodel look's to be almost finished! With regards to that Oak Green color, I do agree it's a stunning choice especially because it's so rare to see on Porsche's. I remember going by the local Porsche dealer one day back in the early 80's and they had a pre-owned 911 in Oak Green with a camel leather interior and I was smitten. Not a big fan of any EV so the Taycan really isn't my cup of tea, but they do have wonderful exterior styling. I believe Mrs. Ped enjoyed driving the BMW M240i a little more judging by her reaction to both, and the M240i also has a comfy place in the back for the pups. That's the more interesting drive(or an M2) for way less money if you don't mind the controversial styling. IMHO Cheers!
Not sure of the colour, always had problems with green cars, perhaps I am just old school. The car itself I think is just awesome but as you say probably would go for the entry model. Great review as it covers all the main issues with electric
In June drove a Taycan 2 laps around Liepzig Porsche PEC circuit, I preferred it to 911 and Panamera I also drove that day. The issue I have apart from depreciation is no fast chargers in places like Mid wales and North Norfolk
The EV haters are missing out . This is seriously good car have to drive one before you judge
I agree 👍
@@PetrolPedI also run a M3 touring and that only does 340 motorway miles, around town lucky if it goes over 200.. really is no difference
Yup, we're missing out on that depreciation
@@brutusoftroy2810 for personal use yes not great, business use even if you loose 50% in 1st year the tax breaks out weigh the losses. My M3 touring lost £25k in 1st year no escaping it on most new cars…
Nice
Beautiful car Pete but the depreciation is staggering! (Tim150 did a bit on it quite recently)! I would only buy the Taycan if l intended to keep it forever, though a battery change in a few years might be pricy. Great to see you all together, cheers, John.
Why would you be looking to do a battery change in a few years? It has a warranty for 8 years. You don’t change the engine in an ice version after it’s expired at 3 years.
Pretty much the same colour interior as in my iX - Mocha ‘leather’
Its massive weight means it won’t “drive like a Porsche”, as a 911 owner I know that, that is true.
Stunning interior 👍
More pups and Mrs Ped please.
Beautiful colour paint. Like you, I’d probably prefer a lighter interior (tan/cream). As always, a great review.
P.S. I hope Mrs PP didn’t give this one any curb rash on the wheels!!
No. Returned safely 👍
Love it , you can’t even get to drive your own test car. lol 😂. Well done mrs P. 👍👍
Very impressive car for sure and as a long time Porsche ICE owner and enthusiast if I ever switch to owning an EV I guess the Taycan would be one to consider from the used market. This particular colour not to my taste really and I would be looking for crayon as a firm favourite of mine. As green’s go though I think one of the nicest around (if rare) is the Montreal Green on the Alfa Tonale which is being contemplated for the missus.
And for those saying about the ev economy.........compare as you would an ICE car. Oh my Porsche GT3 gets less MPG than my diesel hatch........... sounds daft yes? Same with EV's
You'd be mad to buy a new taycan!
But a genius to pick one up second hand fully loaded at half the price it once was still with years of battery warranty. All new Cars regardless of power train you’d be mad to buy these days a family SUV that’s nothing special is £40k plus and people just accept it’s the norm.
Oak green best colour for mk2 golf gti
I’ve been lucky enough to have some nice cars and own a Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo.
I’m not EV fan generally, but for now it does make massive financial sense to run as a company car with all the tax incentives.
It is crazy you can buy a £100k + porsche a a company car, write it off against profits and not really pay anything more than nominal bik whilst the poor oap’s are having their winter fuel allowance taken.
Anyway….whilst they have their flaws, I think it’s the best car I’ve ever driven.
I usually get itchy feet but currently, for me, nothing comes close at present.
Hi Peds
Hi 👋
Great vid … but can you clarify something about the charging at Porsche? You said you’d been there for 20 mins … but your video showed you starting to charge at 1:45 and finishing at 3:29. Clearly longer than 30 minutes. Were there problems?
Not sure where you got that from. Defo on 19 mins 👍
@@PetrolPed He’s looking at the 3.29PM remaining to target thinking it was the clock.
The Macmaster put right off EVS 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤
Not tested a Porsche Taycan but an planning to drive one at Porsche Centre Colchester on Tuesday 8th October but sadly don't know which model I'll be taken out in my I'm hoping it's the 4S edition.
Still quite an epic thing
A few points...#1 £160k #2 300 miles #3 bad news if you dont live near Portsmouth.
Very, very nice. But also: very, very massive depreciation...
I'm sure you will be able to get a SMART #5 in green Pete. 0-60 in less than 3 seconds and nearly 800bhp. Not £130k though.
Beautiful Oak Green, but that is a hideous brown interior!
Definitely the right colour and all the right bits sadly not at the right money for us mere peasants! The Ioniq 5N and the Alfa Junior Veloce that you reference are both indicative that the propulsion system need not be the determinant of whether a car is fun to drive or not. We can see the way things are heading and for sure beautiful ICE cars need to be loved and preserved but the tech has peaked and new petrol vehicles are all full of technology, synthetic sound amplification etc. Manual gearboxes are disappearing fast and hybrid sales are on par with pure petrol. So let things take their course and try not be so tribal about it all.. I think you essentially agree Peter?
EV models are beginning to improve year on year so much Manufacturers are having to rethink the product life cycles. Look at Renault who just said it’s new Retro 5 will change every year improving departing from bigger facelift update every three to four years.
That Taycan is going to be a fabulous second hand car someone, crazy sticker price but then did we ever complain about 911 prices. The market took a dive as so many came on the market. But this newer one may hold better being the new toy on the clock. Money no option it’s probably the best EV out there as a drivers performance Car. As simply a Car fan - what a beast of a tourer. Mrs in the driving seat best endorsement of the Car. 😂
To say you’re on the Fastest charger
18-80% in 20minutes
Still much slower than a car with an 80litre tank 0-Full and off in 8 minutes
RS e-tron GT performance would be my choice.
PS: seems a shame Pete that Porsche charge SO much extra £'s for a decent suspension!
Hi all
Hi 👋
Great car, it's just a shame about the huge depreciation, as with most EV's
Everyone mentions the huge depreciation, have you seen how much an equivalent Panamera Turbo e-hybrid depreciates? It's about 4-5% less less than the Taycan Turbo but then you have all the costs of VED, increased fuelling costs etc. etc. They work out roughly the same within 2-3% over a 3 or 4 year ownership period. If you have it as a company car it's a no brainer, Taycan everyday.
Regardless of the model, it is still huge depreciation. Other models in the Porsche range do not suffer the same huge loss, and not everyone has the chance to have a Porsche EV as a company car. I'm only stating the huge loss, which to me is too much to lose for most people.
@@leooneill1693 I guesss that most of the depreciation is part of the Tax losses allowed to business?
Are you telling us that for all that money it can’t tell you if the charger is available at a Porsche centre??…. You have to queue with everyone else tut tut 😆
Could someone explain whether the battery technology is the same as in mobile phones? I know they both charge quickly to a high percentage then slow down to prevent from overcharging. But it has always been said that for 'mobile' battery efficiency they are best run down to as close to zero% as possible and then charged to 100% to keep the life to its maximum due to batteries having a memory built in.
I think probably the Audi would be my pick just on looks alone.
I’m really conflicted about this car. I’m not an EV hater at all, and I love Porsche as a brand owning a GT3RS and previous Boxsters. But I can’t get all frothy about this car for some reason. The price is outrageous, depreciation catastrophic, and by the time normal people can afford one the battery will be past its best. The novelty of making passengers puke with the g force wears off quickly and totally screws the range. I think in summary I feel it is a great car but it just seems irrelevant, with no ‘place’ in the market.
How’s the tyre wear?
My favourite colour also.
Poor Steve :D
Silly question how did you get home?
EV is ok if you have lots of money and l know you have to give your views and your opinions is yours valid good luck.
What’s the point of it?
It's a froot not a frunk - unless you're American 😉 😄
It may be a good car but the depreciation and cost of replacing batteries is ridiculous so what do you do keep it forever and have the cost of battery replacement or deal with it’s horrendous depreciation 😅😅
Lol have driven a couple of taycans, and yes all good with acceleration but will require as an option a sick bag as the number of people feeling sick in them! Range, my pana does 0-60 in 4s which is plenty and with a stage one map silly quick, but still get 550miles on one tank if it's all motorway driving and will fill up in under 5 minutes! And not be hit with high depreciation. Finally 80% why? That reduces your range and would not have been enough for the drive to cotswold and back without charging! EV are going to be the betamax of the car world
Dudes like him freak about car color schemes yet struggle mightily with color coordinating the very clothes on their back and shoes on their feet lmao
If you can afford a car like this money does not matter to you it just becomes one up man ship
Didn’t look that smooth
The girls were shaking about in the back. Especially the first shot.
Ultimate depreciation vehicle that’s for sure.
If I purchased one this is where the dogs would be 😂 not sure you can afford it 🤔
Not after the money I spent on my garage 😂
Awesome ❤
"Turbo" really. It's a turismo for me but mine is the Abarth variety and I bet I get more fun driving that than this 2 ton scalextric
How things have changed, it's not 5 mins since you were forgetting to charge overnight 😂 hopefully depreciation will stop being an issue when the stupid antiEV lot disappear off YT
This just looks like an advert
Think you should now be "Leccy Ped", after your recent reviews. Really , who will buy that car ?
300 miles easily. In the summer!
911 Hybrid....
Hi Peter the porsche is a great looking car but maybe I'm just getting old now ,but I don't see the point in 890 bhp in an electric car, the last time I checked my average speed of driving around London is now 8 mph because of our fabulous idiot mayor Khan, and the national speed limit is still only 70 mph . I noticed when you was driving you was sitting at 65 mph ,so I'm guessing you was trying to get it to be as economical as possible. The power the weight and the price, then the residual values, they don't hold their money. I would rather have a Porsche diesel, but if I was spending that money it would have to be a 911 gts .not only would it holds it money better it's just a better car in my humble opinion.
Don’t watch videos of cars I will never be able to afford and or want, I’m sure it was well made though
How much 😮
Money has become just a number, lost in a world of other numbers
Unless I win the lottery I’ll never be able to afford one (well that’s true of any ev the money they ask for them), but my biggest problem with the Taycan is - surely it can’t be a sustainable business model for them what with the biblical depreciation they suffer, I mean unless you’re so rich it doesn’t matter to you &/or you don’t care - how many people are going to want to keep buying into them when in a couple of years it could well be worth less than half of what you initially forked out for it?🤷♂️
As a pre-owned purchase - once the biggest chunk of that depreciation has been taken into account then yeah - they make much more sense, but to buy one new - knowing that in a couple of years you could have lost £50k+, who in there right mind is going to want to do that!??
Colour ... No, lights ... Disaster. Porsche new front light design is horrendously ugly. It would be good if you could touch on the fact that diesel and hybrids are outselling EV. Depreciation is the killer.
Not even if I won the lottery. Not impressed by tech. Analog every time. Finest cars ever made are 25 years old.
who supplied the sweatshirt really FFS how can you promote a car like that... forget spec you trying owning one... prices freefall £134k in 12months it will be £70k and who the hell would want to buy it
What sweatshirt ? 🤷♂️
