My Ranger sat for 6 months and then wouldn't start. I replaced the battery, fuel filter, fuel pump, siphoned out the old gas, replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor and coil. She still wouldn't start and stay running.... I wish I would have found your video sooner. It would have saved me $100's and many many hours and headache... Awesome video! Thank you!
My 88 ranger wouldn’t start and your video saved me! I did the wire bypass jumped it started up! I reinstalled a new one! Thanks brother! You’re the man!
I just acquired a 1989 Ford F250 4x4 that's been parked in a building for 22 years. It has 40,000 original miles. I put tires on it. New plugs, changed the oil & filter. New battery - everything came to life, but it wouldn't start. I put 3 gallons in the front tank. I changed the fuel relays. Won't start. It will turn over quickly. It will run temporarily on starter fluid. Thanks to your video I'll take a look at the inertia switch next. - before I replace the electric fuel pumps/tanks. Thanks
Great. These short videos. Are helpful. Thank you. I have a jumper wire. I will replace the inertia switch first before I replace the electrical wire harness. I've already changes the fuel pump and fuel filter. In addition to the fuel relay fuse which was blown. Thank you.
I have a 04 Ford Escape Xlt. I may have a faulty fuel inertia switch that I will have to replace. I will try the bypass first to see. Thank you that video was very informative for me.
If you are still around, hoping this fix will work for our F250 Super Duty V10 6.8 L Won’t start. Replaced fuel filter and brand new battery. Going to try your bypass idea to see if it will allow the truck to start.
Yeah I'm driving 91 stx 3.0 and you helped me fix a no start problem on it by resetting the inertia switch. It's good to know the inertia switch can be bypassed. Thanks for the info.
Bitchin' Ranger!!! And that shot you got of the paint reflection...👀😲. I think we DIY guys & gals can all appreciate a from start-to-finish video. Good work!
I have a 1996 Lincoln Towncar that left me stranded at work last night. I had no problem getting to work, but when I was ready to go home it wouldn't start. Luckily the AAA tow truck driver knew about the Fuel pump cutoff switch in these older Fords and went fishing for it. My car has a nice bright yellow label pointing to exactly where it is in the trunk. And it was right out in the open. He pressed the reset button and it started right up. He saved me an untold amount of aggravation. My question is...what made the switch trip? I wasn't in any accident or hit a speed bump. I need to be able to avoid future shut offs because I know my luck. The same thing might happen again and I'll go "Oh hey, I just saw this video explaining what to do." And I'll try it and it won't start. I need to know if this was a freak circumstance, or is the switch faulty and needs to be replaced?
From what i hav heard they have like a ball in there and ya they can wear over time. im replacing the one on my p71 as i notice a lag when i take a sharp right turn...
The only way to figure that out is drive it and see if it happens again. If it happens again soon, replace it. Or buy one off eBay and replace it to be on the safe side/ throw it in the trunk for an emergency, whatever. You can try hooking up to a code reader but I don’t know if that’ll get you anywhere. Good luck
Thanks for this video. I have a 1986 Ford F-150 4x4. I am sinking more and more money into but it was my dad’s so I just keep fixing the next thing. The truck wasn’t starting. The inter tank pumps were engaging but it wasn’t starting. So, I replaced the external fuel pump and filter. It still isn’t starting and now I don’t hear any of the pumps engaging. When I put the external in I cycled when I put on the wiring. My inertia switch is tripped and I was so excited for this video… but it still didn’t start. What should I check next? I did pull the front and back fuel lines and am 98% sure input them back on the filter before the external fuel pump… would that cause this issue if they were switched. I don’t think that is it though. I have looked at the relay but it isn’t going to be easy so I thought I’d seek advice first.
My 93’ Ford probe has a third middle wire on the wiring harness that plugs into the cut off switch. When jumping the two outside wires together, what am I supposed to do with the middle wire that goes into the wiring harness please and thank you I’m having some serious trouble getting this probe to stay running. I’ve crossed the wires every direction and what not and haven’t had much success.
Trucks ignition switch went bad so it got stuck on. Took it to a friend's house. He pulled the fuse and the first one that he pulled from under the hood was the anti-theft and the fuel pump fuse. Of course the truck stalled upon replacing the ignition switch and the actuator and the column that reset the fuel system and burn up the fuel pump. So then we had but the new fuel pump in well when we drop the tank to put a fuel pump in tank had a crack in it. After replacing the fuel pump tank and feeder tube. We got good fuel pressure. It started up for about 3 or 4 seconds and then would not start again. It's cranking. Like I said we got good fuel pressure now but it's not firing so we're thinking ESC. What do you think?
So how would a working inertia switch look, that white should stay down or up? Mine looks and moves just like yours, i cant wait to get off work and test it
Hey great video, i have 87 ford f150 same switch and wire different location. My switch is doing the same thing as yours, But I pulled the plug, put a teslight on, turn the Ignition. I'm not getting any twelve volts to the plug on either terminal. What could that be. Please help
Good morning. I wanted to see if you could help me. I am stumped. I have an 88 GT Mustang that won’t start. It’s only getting 3 volts at the fuel pump. It’s getting 11.5 at the inertia switch. I even put a jumper wire on that in case the switch was bad and still 3 volts at the pump. I swapped fuel relay with another Foxbody I have and that car starts with both relays. Any idea what I’m missing? I appreciate any help.
I have a 2002 crvwpuld you know where it's located? The inertia? N if so could you post a photo because I. SO unsure what it looks like cuz different videos say it looks like this or that and yah it's all different. Please help

My 2001 Ford Ranger was running till last night, when I turn the key to crank my truck, the dash light’s don’t come on and it won’t crank? Is there some kind of sensor I have to replace?
I'm a widow and I'm doing all my work on my 05 Pony and I could use some advice I've checked my fuses are good I believe but I am still having problems with point A to point C I've replaced my fuel pump and quite frank my hair is getting rather thin any pointers of help you may have
@1RamsHead. This is the same truck I have. Was this your issue? I tried the bypass and it still isn’t starting. I’ve already replaced fuel pump and filter. Don’t hear any of the three pumps priming.

I've got a 86 Ford ranger 2.9l 6 cylinder 4x4 won't start. Ive replaced in tank pump and tfi mod. It will turn over just won't start. Tested pressure regulator. Gas shoots out of it one then try to start it and test regulator again nothing. System not staying pressurized. What other things can it be
Ok so I have a 1988 2.9 and I've replaced fuel pump, put new injector o-rings, new ignition, new relay, and my fuel pressure seems really high at 90psi before fuel rail but the other day it ran like a champ now it's doing the same thang some how it's either getting to much fuel or not enough I don't know what to check for this you can here intank fuel pump kick on and injectors
Thanks for your video, the problem that I’m having on my 2004 Ford F150, is that when it doesn’t turn on, I check the inertia switch and it’s not tripped. However, when I disconnected and reconnected, my truck will start up. I replaced the nurses switch but the problem to remains. I noticed that it occurs more often if the temperature is colder outside. If anyone has any suggestions I’d appreciate them. Thanks!
Hello Sir, nice video, straight to the point, I like it. I put a new inertia switch but for some reason it will still cutoff sometimes then u tap in the sensor and bam it works again . Keep in mind this is a new sensor from auto zone. Could it be a problem with the connector?
My 86 ranger sat for 4 months after i parked it,,i lost the key and had to remove the keylock and tumblers . now it wont start ,the dash lights come on but no run when i crank it. i put fresh gas and new battery and bypassed the inertia switch. Hey bud, great video. My 1989 Ranger, new pump, inertia switch good or operating, new relay. No power to pump. May have a bad wire connection somewhere but can not locate.
what if I cant find one. I've looked at the manual diagram plus like five others online. I'm wondering if the original owner may have just totally removed it? Our ignition is stuck on and were trying to just shut the engine off.
Whats the link for the universal fuel pump sensor I have a 2006 ford ranger who is having the same problem and I can't seem to find the fuel pump interia sensor.
I’m looking for explain of the way fuel pump star and stop , later keep running when car runs Why the pump do that’ And how check that sensor o wherever do that
My friend I hope you find the problem I have a 2001 Hyundai sante and I had the same symptoms, first the inertia switch is in the engine compartment close to the brake master cylinder driver side. Now how I fixed my car, my starter was the issue it was cranking but it was not engaging with the flywheel, I took it to AutoZone tested and sure enough it was bad, at first I couldn't believe it but then when I installed it fired up, I was happy, what a relief after doing so many tests. That was my experience.
