  • In this video, I show how a fuel pump relay works and how to bypass yours. I also show how to rewire your fuel pump for an upgraded fuel system or race car. Aftermarket 5 pin bosch style fuel pump relays can easily be wired into any car and made to work with nearly any electric fuel pump scenario you can come up with. This info could apply to any Bosch 044 style pump, AEM external pumps, or even a Walbro 255 fuel pump.
    Pin 30 - Incoming 12v to relay from battery
    Pin 87 - Outgoing from relay to electric fuel pump power.
    Pin 85 - Ground
    Pin 86 - Trigger wire to turn on the fuel pump relay. Can be connected to a toggle switch, the ignition switch, or connected to the factory fuel pump relay wiring.

    You may add, that a relay needs to be diode protected in order for the circuit to be computer controlled. So that when the relay coil is turned off it does not back feed voltage into computer.

    If you don't have a factory computer trigger wire make sure you run the trigger wire through an oil pressure switch, the last thing you want in an accident is the fuel pump running feeding a possible fire.

My car cranks but won’t start. Was wondering if this could fix my issue, with the use of a hardwired/external fuel pump relay kit. Thanks in advance

    • @WiringRescue

      You can replace your entire fuel pump circuit with this, as long as you have an ignition wire to power up pin 86 on the relay.

    How do you know what fuse to use? different fuses going to the same relay. For us laymen, how do we figure this out. Also, what do you suggest tying into for a Jeep YJ without an electric fuel pump? Key ignition?

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  Год назад

      I made a video for that! Here you go ruclips.net/video/EhzN6UdnmPA/видео.html. As for the YJ, grabbing an ignition source for the fuel pump relay would probably work okay, just make sure you have a fuel pressure regulator, because if your engine is off and your key is on, the fuel pump will run and flood the engine bigtime without one.

    Thank you so much for posting this video! Any recommendations how to use trigger wire based on boost level or only turn it on when car is above certain rpm range ?

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  5 месяцев назад

      When it comes to upgrading fuel systems in turbochargerd cars, people usually upgrade the fuel pressure regulator to one that is a 1:1 rising rate. That way you can run a high volume fuel pump all the time and it runs like stock. However, when the turbo spools and starts making boost,the fuel pressure increases 1psi for every 1psi of boost.
      For higher horsepower applications (maybe 600hp+), you’ll get into larger fuel line, multiple pumps and surge tanks/swirl pots. Below that, 1 good high volume pump should do the job just fine.

    I bought a tanks inc tank and pump with relay and safety pressure sensor., what wire goes to the oil pressure switch?

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  2 года назад

      I think it would depend if the pressure switch is set to be 'open' or 'closed' when there is oil pressure. My best guess is that it would go in the middle of the 85 wire, but that is just a guess without knowing how your specific switch works.

      If your ignition switch is already fused somewhere before it, then you won’t need a fuse on your trigger wire (pin 86). However, if that pin 86 were to accidentally short out, it will pop the fuse for the ignition which will shut down everything on the ignition circuit. So it’s up to you! :)

    I enjoyed the video. Unfortunately, half of them say that pin 30 is the one with constant power. The other half suggest that the constantly hot pin is 87. I wouldn't care that much except that the diagram is on the relay rather than the fuse box. Unfortunately, a 4-pin relay can be installed two different ways if you catch my drift. Just a fyi: the relay must be connected to the ground that originally went to the pump. Made the mistake of grounding the relay to vehicle chassis, and the pump wouldn't prime unless I jumped the battery. The pcm won't be able to energize the main relay because it doesn't see the ground 😅.
    The pump itself can be grounded to chassis

    every kill switch / fuel pump interrupt video on youtube is about a toggle switch. not one describes how to build a latching relay with a momentary push button. a momentary push button has an automatic reset with a latching relay setup, which is way more secure since you can't forget to reset the kill switch circuit. myself, personally, I would definitely forget making this kind of circuit useless for security. i know you're not necessarily talking about kill switches, but it would be nice if people could explain how to wire up a latching relay circuit with a momentary push button, because a toggle switch is less than ideal, and exactly where to tap into these power sources on the car itself. you'd do a great job of it. thanks!

Or, I could wire in the switch off of PIN 86 to my ignition power source and I would have to switch the switch to on to get fuel or if I left it off, I could use accessories power and not have the pump running if I did not want to start the engine? Why do you need the relay in the first place?

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  Год назад +1

      Relays allow smaller amperage rating switches to control larger amperages circuits. The switch turns on the relay, and the relay turns on the fuel pump. Sometimes the ‘switch’ could be a computer, and computers don’t like huge fuel pump amperages flowing through them. So you might have a very low amperage computer, that tells the relay to turn on and the relay does all the hard work of flicking on the large amounts of electricity going to your fuel pump. Your computer stays happy because it never has to work hard. Your relay loves doing the heavy lifting. Your fuel pump gets the proper amperage it needs.

    See I’m using two new terminal posts basically I made thru my hangar. I’ve inserted two new studs to use as my positive and negative so I no longer supply and power thru the cars factory small connectors. If I splice into the existing positive lead on my cars harness to you as the new relays trigger on 86 and then 87 connects to my new positive stud terminal i made and the I also ground my pump with the new termninals to the chassis. Now don’t I still need to them ground the factory harness original negative lead to complete the circuit to have it do what I need and he original wires to do, which is to trigger on my new relay ?

    Great video and easy to follow. I have my LS3 all hooked up accordingly, the pump comes on key ignition, and it starts up. however when I run the car down the road easily and then jump on it, the fuel pump shorts out, but not the fuse and stops the car. I would take a live 12V battery spare wire and hook it to the fuel pump wire and start the car and it starts so I could get back home, then I have to disconnect the "hot" wire off the fuel pump wire otherwise the engine would stay on after removing the key. What connection do I have wrong that would make the fuel pump cut out just by quickly jumping or accelerating the engine?

Does it trigger synchronously with 87 from 86 (on trigger, 87 and 87A both become high), or does it alternate state with 87 (ie, 87 high, 87A low, then 87 low, 87A high)?

      The diagram itself will work, you just need to make sure the parts you are connecting are correct for the motorcycle. For example, a high volume car fuel pump may draw more amperage than some motorcycles can output.

    I Love the physical schematic and great explanation. I do have a question: on another video I saw that the presenter mentioned about wire “87A” as your direct hot wire to the fuel pump in case of emergency, is this true? . Now, my pump will run but it will not prime when I turn the key on, the vehicle requires, at least, two good long cranks to then start. After that, I can hear my fuel pump humming normally. I also replaced the relay only to observe the same behavior. Is this a sign my pump,is going bad? All of this happened after my mechanic replaced the electronic spark control among other things. Please shed some light? Thanks again!

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching! I haven't seen that other video, so I can't be exactly sure how their circuit worked. There are many ways to wire a fuel pump though, so anything is possible. If the fuel pump isn't priming when you are trying to start it, I would expect it to be very difficult to start. If I were you, I would connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel system and see if it is getting fuel pressure when cranking the engine. If not, hunt down the reason why. It sounds like you may already know this reason. My guess is that your fuel pump is getting fed power in the "Run" position, but not the "Start" position.
      Good luck!

      You need to know the amperage specs for the pump to determine the wire size and fuse size. Your ground and power wires should both be sized for the amperage draw of the pump. Fuel pumps also cool themselves with the fuel that flows through them. If you are running them dry it may burn them out. Your wires sound like they are too small, especially the ground. - Check out this video for more info on wire and fuse sizes. ruclips.net/video/EhzN6UdnmPA/видео.html

    It wont damage anything by leaving the pump on? It doesn’t hurt the engine right?

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  2 года назад

      It depends how the fuel system is designed. Generally I’ll use the factory fuel pump power wire to turn on my relay (pin 86). By doing so, the fuel pump works just like a factory setup, but has a clean, strong power source directly from the battery. This allows a high volume fuel pump to not be restricted by factory wiring.
