Been singing 50+ years now and yes the Sm58 is STILL undoubtedly the go to industry mic - Jack of all trades and decent in a lot of applications. BUT you can make one mic sound pretty close to another with EQ in a live situation, Audio technica, Beyer, AKG, Sennheiser and a whole lot more people all make great mics. When i started out in Rock bands I picked a Beyerdynamic over an SM58 because for my voice at the time I needed something with a good bottom end response and the Beyer beat the Shure hands down but you need to try these mics before picking whats right for your vocal. All of that said I just bought a 3 pack of Tourtech VM50s for £20 YES £20! online (no stock at PMT) - The reason - I run an open mic and I prefer not to use my TC Helicon, AKG or Sennheiser mics in that situation - I was looking at buying used but these mics will work fine with a little tweaking. You can easily boost the mids and lower end on the tourtechs and at the end of the day a mic will only be as good as the singer. Where quality really counts is in the studio where you will most definitely benefit from a more expensive mic for sure. I'm about to launch a new act with Swing and big show numbers and some jazzy blues in the set so I went for a decent retro mic in the Shure 55 Super Deluxe which will not only sound super warm and clear but will add to the visual effect. It's all good - you just need to do a little research and if possible give the mics a try before you buy.

Agreed. I don't like the SM58 as I think they sound muddy and have too many mids. I use a Sennheiser e945 which has 10 years of service, done well over 400 gigs but was more pricey than the SM58! I do use many SM57's for micing amps though so I'm not bashing Shure.

In the eighties, Prince used the Sennheiser mics, both on the 1999 tour, and Purple Rain tour. His personal mike he used on the Purple Rain tour was auctioned at a price of 75,000.00, in American currency. Now that's an expensive mic.😂

Having tested a few mics on my side.
To defend the SM58, in a live environment it's just an absolute unit and jack of all trades. It's one of the best when it comes to sound rejection, handling noise, anti-feedback, handling plosives.
If looking at it only for the sound character I could agree it's over rated. Brighter mics could be more flattering. But it's IMO a powerhouse in other aspects that are useful in a live setting.
Just my 2cents on why it isn't overrated. But there are for sure alternatives with other benefits and it comes down to picking the right mic for the right job :)

Well, in my work situation where we don’t have the best positions for the PA monitors and stage monitors, in general Shure mics do the best work. It’s a small stage with drums, a grand piano and all. I can’t say they have the best sound but hey, do they survive a loud stage volume under these conditions? Hell yeah! 58s are not the best for anything, but they work with tons of instruments so they’re a great choice if you don’t get to have a huge arsenal of mics.
By the way, I wrote this before but why don’t you guys do these vids under real gigging conditions for once? You don’t even need an audience, just do it on a stage with musicians and monitors etc. That I’d love to watch, especially the perormer’s and the sound guy’s opinions!

GAP consortium says Tourtech is great, then? :)
I joke - it's great to have affordable items and i've a few Tourtech items which have been incredibly well priced. Their guitar straps, also very good if you want that Gretsch style vibe. Need to keep supporting brick and mortar stores like Andertons/PMT etc. and this really helps i think.

Sorry, have to be that one person, but completely disagree with her on the SM58. When used properly, it can sound great, and its build quality is so much better than these cheaper mics, so will last hundreds of years, instead of hundreds of milliseconds!
