    I have used the D5 for about 5 years now. I also have SM58s, Beta 58s and Beta 87As for vocal use as well. I was using the Beta 87a as my primary vocal mic but found in certain situations I would have to plugin to a sound board that didn't have Phantom power. So I started carrying around my D5 as an alternative because to me it sounded the closest to the 87 but in dynamic form. I would not hesitate equipping a stage full of D5s for vocals, but at least at this point they're still not as rider friendly as the Shure offerings which is why I keep those in my arsenal.

    I'm fairly new to microphones, interfaces, near-field monitors, flat-response -critical listening- headphones, digital audio workstations, etc. In my short journey researching the world of audio I am getting the impression that: everybody hears differently -some people are better trained than others; audio equipment, and the listening environment, play a role in what we hear; we rarely wonder how a microphone could sound after post-processing, and judge based on what we hear with no processing; lastly, biases play a role in favoring one microphone over another. The world of audio has a lot of diversity, and everybody has an opinion.
    I once heard Mike Delgaudio (Booth Junkie) say that the first thing he looks at -when considering a microphone purchase- is its frequency response chart! I am assuming that, over the years, he has learned to look at measurements to get a sense of how a microphone is going to perform on his voice. I'm currently trying to get a sense for what the frequency response chart for my voice is, in the hopes that I can develop that skill too. I'm years away, probably.
    Where I live, I have no access to a store where I can go to try before I buy. Given that, I really appreciate RUclips channels -like yours- that provide a reference for us to hear; pay attention; hear again; only to jump to another channel, seeking to repeat the exercise, but with a different "reference". Thank you for what you do.
    I first bought the XM8500 (dark) and played with it for quite a while. I then decided to go to the other extreme (bright), and bought the Sennheiser e835, which I like better on my voice (based on my ears, my room, and my audio playback system). My next step is to have Lenny B make me a preset for both microphones, to then compare them again, and see what comes out of it. I heard Bandrew -from the RUclips Podcastage channel- say that the XM8500 (with post-processing) should do the trick for anyone considering a podcast, or a RUclips channel. So, XM8500 with a preset from Lenny B is something I'd like to hear, and compare it to the e835, also with a Lenny B preset. What is currently stopping me is my desire to (acoustically) treat my room first.
    Anyway. This is just a new hobby and I'm enjoying all the experimentation, tinkering and audio hallucinations. Back to enjoying life, and sound.

    Great review! I "think" I like the e835 better than the D5, although they're both great. That said, I just bought, then immediately returned two e835's, but not because they sound bad (they're awesome). The problem I have with them is that I host karaoke, and the e835 creates too much low rumble/feedback for me to handle with multiple singers taking turns. It's virtually impossible to "set it and forget it," so to speak. So, I just ordered two sE Electronics V7 mics to try. I've heard a lot of good things about the V7 and feedback rejection. I haven't received them yet, but I hope they live up to their reputation.

    Hi! First of all, thank you very much for your reviews, which I find very useful. That said, I would like to ask you a little bit off-topic question (sorry for that). I'm going to buy my first mic in order to record my voice while singing. By the way, I don't think I'm going to buy a condenser mic, for I'm going to sing and to record in an untreated room, at my parents' house. Therefore, I think I'm going to buy a dynamic mic, choosing between the Shure SM58 and the Sennheiser E835. In particular, my choice will mainly depend on which one of these two mics might have less background noise, considering the "unfriendly" environment where I'm going to use it. So, my question is the following: if you were in my shoes, which one of those two mics do you think you would choose? Please, also consider that I do not aim to get perfect recordings: it would be enough for me to get acceptable results in order to record song covers (just for fun). Thank you very much in advance and sorry for bothering you (and for my bad english as well, as I'm not a native speaker).

    • @DarkCornerStudios
      @DarkCornerStudios  3 года назад +2

      Hey Simone!
      Both will do similar jobs at rejection.
      If you have the money...pick up both and return the one you like less.
      If you don't have the money...I would suggest the sm58.
      It is a classic for a reason.
      Let me know which one you buy...and good luck!

    • @simonemiglietta2975
      @simonemiglietta2975 3 года назад

      @@DarkCornerStudios First of all, thank you very much for your quick response! It will be very helpful for me in order to make my choice.
      Unfortunately, I don't have enough money to buy (and thus, try) both at the same time, although that would be the best solution by far!
      The SM58 has been my first option for days now, and your answer seems to confirm that it would be a good choice.
      However, I've also read on the internet that the E835 could be more suitable for my voice and my singing style (low-mid volume, "soft" singing), whereas the SM58 would be the best choice for high volume, screaming and loud singing styles.
      By the way, apart from these issues related to voice types and different singing styles, my first concern is about noise rejection, and that's why I asked you that question in my previous comment.
      Now, knowing that both mics do similar jobs at rejection, I'm able to make my choice focusing on other issues as well.
      Thank you very much again! 🙏
      I will surely let you know which will be my final choice, as soon as I make up my mind 💪🏻

    The SM58 off-axis sounded pretty bad - phased and muddied. The D5 off-axis kept its tone and crispness better. It also had much better proximity-effect tone and clarity, which is really important when you're eating the mic, trying to be heard above the instrument noise. The D5 clarity and tone also sounded like it would cut through more than the SM58. Thanks for the review.

    I'm new to the microphone/audio space. I first bought an SM58, running it into a UMC22 usb interface. While I appreciated the SM58 build quality, I really needed to bump my gain to get any appreciable volume out of it, which was then too noisy as a result. The D5 was definitely a hotter mic, and required about 25% less gain for the same output level. I also appreciate the supercardoid pattern, which helps limit the off-axis noise, like my nearby keyboard. It seems a cloud lifter/SE DM1 Dynamite mic amplifier for these dynamic mics is often needed for applications when you're not right up against the mic. I've got a DM1 on order...Thanks for the video.

    I am quite disappointed with my SM58 at this point. It sounds too muddy, too much low end. I record music in my room and I cannot get the vocals to sit right in the mix. Quite frustrating. Now I will be frustrated whether to pick the AKG or the Sennheiser. You have been quite informative, sir.

      @@zKo87 seriously though ..there are few bad mics...just many wrong ones. Eg sing into an r84 and it sounds dark and masked but spectral balance a little and its a beautiful thing and can take way more eq gain than most others. Its the mics contour, transient response, pre/impedance and cable....that is if you are producing music that has space for eg doing metal just get a 58 and you cant tell the diff...rec norah jones well thats a diff story. Thats also why direct monitoring as per eh steinberg, the singer can hear comp/eq/rev to fit their needs but print as the raw mic signal.

    I just can't seem to decide what to get, mics are so much more confusing to me than headphones lmao. Should I get a 120ish dollar cheap XLR setup with the XM8500? Or just a simpler USB microphone like the elgato wave 1? If that even is a good USB mic for under 150 dollars.... Ugh I'm so tired of this I'm about to just flip a coin and get one randomly... Even if I don't stream or record or anything I still want the best possible mic, but I'm starting to think all this research for mic quality that I cant even tell the difference in RUclips videos at least, just isn't worth the hassle.

  • @soundxplorer
    @soundxplorer 11 месяцев назад

    D5 and XM8500 sound exactly the same in your demonstration. Buy either one, they both sound great for the price.
    SM58 at this distance (5 or 6 inches) sounds fuller, retaining more body in your voice. But it has less clarity in the high frequencies. Getting up closer to the D5 would bring back those low frequencies that were thinned out by being further away. The AKG D5 is definitely a mic that requires the person to stay right up on it and not move around much. When you're up close, I think it sounds better than the SM58. But the 58 would be a more forgiving choice to put up on amateur open mic night.

      This thing would suit you just fine for both.
      Keep in mind though...being a supercardioid, you have to make sure you stay on the mic as best you can...so it will drop off if you are talking to the side.
      The SM58 or Sennheiser e835 wouldnt have that issue...

    All right guys, this is a blind question from a blind person! How do I know which side is the front of the microphone if I am blind? I noticed that there is a little rectangle slot where the switch to mute or unmute the microphone should be. I am just wondering which side is the front of the microphone. Thank you for all the answers and enjoy the comment that may appear here soon.

      Two ways!
      First is most microphones will have a textured grille on the front.
      The bottom of the mic will have an xlr port with three prongs.
      Also...the front of this particular mic will be bigger than the back/bottom
