There is just something about seeing the microphone you use in the video you're watching. It's like the day after Christmas. Not quite as exciting, but you still feel happy.
I recently bought 2 58s used from a guy locally who was offing a bunch of karaoke gear for 50 bucks. I'm about 90% sure they're both real Shures but they're slightly different between the two of them. No huge disparities like in this video. They both sound the same, both weight the same, and the capsules are the same. The grilles are slightly different though. One is more matte and the other is shiny. And the one which is shiny is also just has a darker color to it. It seems a lot older than the other. I know that 58s haven't changed like...at all since they were made, right? Are slight aesthetic differences like that something to be concerened about? And I do mean SLIGHT. I love how they both sound, I've always preferred my voice through 58s, even compared to other more expensive mics. They're both the sturdy bulletproof Shure quality we all know and love. I've used my fair share of 58s on stages. But I guess I never really delved into them too deep because well...they're so common. A 58 always seemed like a 58 to me. But this video has me curious about mine. And even if one or even both of mine WERE fake, they're pretty dang excellent and I definitely will continue using them. If a company figured out how to counterfeit a mic as good as this, I wanna know what company it is because they would give Shure a run for their money. Anyway, yeah. TLDR; my two 58s have the slightest color and grille differences but otherwise are identical and I dont know what that's about.
If you want a mic like the SM58 but can't afford it, please go get the Behringer xm8500. If you know where to look, you can get one for around $25. It pushes a bit in the mid-range, but it's a fantastic mic from a well-known company. If you need a starter mic, this is the one to get.
Bought a counterfeit SM58 once in Russia. It was heavy enough, very-well built, but had a round hole at the bottom and a sticker. The sound quality was cheap but it was working. The little store I was buying it from vanished when I went back to return it:) Sent it to Shure in Germany, they told me it's a fake one and kept it:) The end.
As of now, they have gotten better, The fakes are the exact same size and weight. The bevel where they screw together look the same. Even under the windscreen looks the same. The fake one even sounds pretty good.
Really appreciate you going into all of those details! I have 4 sm58’s and after I was halfway through watching I frantically checked my mic’s to make sure they were the real deal.
This does make one appreciate the engineering and build quality of the Shure beast. They are tanks, so friggin’ reliable, that we tend to take it for granted that they will work, even after you drop it, or the mic stand falls over.
I have a real SM58, but mine does have the caution sticker and the same xlr port as the fake one in this vid. Everything else is identical with the real mic in this vid but not every difference you pointed out are definitive indicators.
I bought a "second hand" SM58 on Ebay, it was £50, I though that seemed a reasonable price for a 2nd hand SM58. No, it was a fake. From a Chinese seller too.
I've seen a few similar videos, this was the clearest. Another thing that is hard to illustrate is just how durable these mics are. I recently put back into service an SM-57 that I bought 40 years ago and had been sitting in a file cabinet. It's still an awesome sounding mic. Oddly enough I think I paid more for it in 1977 than they cost now.
I bought a fake Beta 58a a few years ago and for some odd reason it sounded good.. actually still does. I would not say it's the same quality as a real one, the grill is not the same quality, it is lighter and there's a bit more noise while handling it.. however the sound is pretty good so i'd say for the price it's a good beginners mic... however.. would I buy one again, no. Reasons: 1. There are much better quality cheap mics available.. so on a budget i'd probably always go for the the t.bone MB85 Beta from Thomann. Price is really good, especially if you're ordering something more from them, you pay the same for shipping. 2. You never know what quality the fake ones are, and more often than not they're crap. I found a Shure sm58 going through some stuff that just somehow ended up in my rehersal space and i was pretty sure it was a fake so i checked this video.. some things looked different and "more legit" on this particular one.. but now i'm sure it's a fake.. yet to plug it in and try it, although, i might just throw it out... well maybe if it works ok i can scratch fake into it and give it to some young guys who need a mic.
@@yoboisteven1741 Yep these things can go to hell and back. Mine has clearly taken at least three hard falls. Basket has two dents. Handle/casing has a shallow dent from a metal-on-metal impact, looks like it hit an aluminum stair corner. Still works perfectly. I got it for $20!
It's probably older than you, it's seen some shit, salute to your microphone everyday before you use it, don't want it to go crazy and have any nam flashbacks.
You missed looking down the barrel to the transformer. The light weight fake is unlikely to contain the transformer or the low DC resistance out of the transformer. A real 58, if I remember correctly has a DC resistance somewhere near 30 ohms, where fake ones are much higher..
The counterfeit looks exactly like the PDmic58 from Pyle. It's likely the same one. Those sold on Amazon for 15$.... and were OK for general use... like talking into a PA for a meeting or something.
I don’t think it’s counterfeit, I think it’s made with that new space age polymer, and filled with helium. Great video. Thank you on behalf of EVERYONE.
Today I scored Blue Bluebird SL in the box for $70 (missing shock mount). Inside the box were two sm58s in excellent condition. I thought they had to be fake. But after watching about 10 videos and looking on 4 websites, I found out they are real. 3 great mics for $70. Best mic deal of my life.
lol at the end Mike walks the crap mic away in the recycling bin but the mics specifically state not to dispose of them that way :P Great video none-the-less Mike!
I just bought the original shure sm58 few days ago and last night my friends and I go to jamming and their mic is using a FAKE sm58 but I spot the difference especially in weight and height 😅
i found a really old behringer dynamic mic i had from many years ago. plugged it in and it sounds like your counterfeit mic. The lesson is to just buy right and buy once.
I just opened and checked my shure I bought from a guy, it does look like original inside and outside. It worked pretty well until I opened it, I broke the wire when I assembled it back... Now I'm a proud owner of broken original shure! (I know how to solder things, so it's ok)
Im really sure i have bought the original shure sm58! I paid $100 and bought it @ Guitar Center here in Concord Ca! A very big shop selling guitars fender amplifier etc etc!
Kick that sucker to the CURB! lol. As you were showing these, I was comparing my c608... a number of differences, cosmetic and otherwise. Thanks for the video!
January 2021! I just came across this video and had to properly examine my 2 Shure mics. Thank GOD they are not fake☺️ Thank you for this amazing revelation.
I think the best thing you can do with that thing is to mod it into a nice microphone. Maybe even one of those "old-school radio talker" mics you have a tutorial for?
It would be nice if all counterfeit or fake was so easily distinguished by visuals, weight, etcetera like shown here. In fact you could get, as I did, a product that could only be distinguished by operational sound and observation that the capsule mount was using a non pneumatic rubber. Some other elements of the fake, just resembled older Shure manufacturing and packaging variations that might be judged superior. Getting the weight and appearance identical isn't a big barrier to making a cheap knockoff. But... Using a genuine mic to compare, hooking them up and listening to what came out (especially while handling) and the difference was obvious. My fake wasn't even a terrible mic in use, just not good, and sure not a Shure.
Wow I believe I bought a fake one from long and mcquade in Edmonton years back because it sounded identical to how yours sounds and looked like that to! I'm happy I returned it , today I think I am going to go grab another but making sure it's real this time, thanks man!

The price alone gives it away. I've never seen one new for less than $89 (right now at Sweetwater). I think Shure sets a minimum price that dealers are allowed to charge. They can bundle other stuff with it (cable, stand, whatever) effectively creating a discount, but they can't lower the price.
I ned a mic for flute , hamonica and singing. NOTHING fancy . I'm in between Shure beta a 58 and Sennheiser e945. Had a Shure sm 58 before ( got stolen) , it worked fine but would like to try something a little better .Thanks in advance for any answer.

Just got an SM58 off a random, low ranked ebay seller for $85. All checks out as legit except the plate under the pins is like the fake, the specs say .298kg, and the inside of the bag is like the fake bag, but otherwise, every other aspect (capsule most importantly) is legit, so I'm thinking that even the real ones may be a little different here and there, which is why the copies may differ (they are copying varied real ones).
Thought it was just going to be a sound comparison. Great breakdown of all the other fake features!
I like to imagine that when you got the counterfeit it already had the fake stickers all over it

Naw, as soon as you picked it up, there would be no question. Half the weight? Obvious after one would plug it in. The fake IS a pos.
Until you plug it in and it does'nt work!

Thanks Mike! I am about to meet someone to buy a used SM58 off Craigslist and now I'll be able to easily verify it's the real deal.
I bought one from Wish as well. I still have it as a beater mic... or if I need something to make my room sound like it is wrapped in foil.

Yeah, I paid almost $400 Australian for an SM58 in 1987! US made though, the others were cheaper.
I bought it 2 days ago and I just received it today. Why didn't I see this video earlier?
