Instructions unclear, I am now Lars Ulrich.
No I am
Instructions perfectly clear, am now Les Claypool
@@MarkBonneauxincorret , CLIFF BURTON!!!!!!!
Oh god noooooooo!
I’ll never get tired of a good Lars Ulrich slamming 😹😹
The best advice I ever got was "You don't know the right notes until you've played all the wrong ones".
Also for bass, your tone knob is more versatile than any 5 way switch.
Yes! like to be good at drawing. you have to draw at least a thousand shitty drawings before you can start making good ones.
@@briandoornink7597 As for drawing : it is merely a question of learning to see what is really there. Train your eyes. And musicians ? Learn to listen. Train your ears. If that doesn't help : you have no talent.
@@trikkke11Agreed, for the most part. For the last sentence, from the standpoint of someone who has a good bit of talent, talent is overrated. It's helpful, but it's nothing to stress about. 🤣
I'm musically inclined, but socially inept as hell. I had to work hard to get my charisma modifier from super negative to slightly positive. Hard work can beat talent under the right conditions.
I'm with you on that first line.
From the standpoint of a drummer who stepped into guitar and then stepped into bass recently..........NANI?!???
How is that versatility possible???? 😮
@@LEOsoulMonarch Social interaction is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more complicated than mastering a set of mathematical rules, please, get real ! But that's a completely different discussion.
Mr Danny BEHS. I’ve started learning at the age of 62 and I’ve bought a player P BEHS.
Out of all the behs channels on here, you’re the one I can connect with the most, even though I’m a southern softie. 😂
I mashed my right hand in a motorcycle accident years ago and can only use a pick, it’s great to see you don’t ignore pick players.
Thanks
I encourage you to SLAP IT HARDER...
and don't be a softie
I'd join your band but alas... I'm a super suthen softie from wey down unda..
Get into it Baz!!
Never too old to make noise mate!!
Best of fella, from another Antipodean!!
In all my years I've been watching RUclips and playing bass I've never seen a more realistic bass player as you Danny, someone who actually is realistic about the kinds of basslines you will be playing in a band as opposed to the showy nonsense you see people doing on social media
RUclips bassists are either 1) dudes doing jerkoff solos you'd get fired for doing in a gig or 2) dudes with P basses and flatwounds who act like geniuses for thumping along to beginner-level basslines. Danny's one of the few who consistently gets it right
@@AL-ry5ly To be fair, a large of those in number one tend to be Jazz musicians where doing flashy and more difficult stuff on bass is more accepted.
Your definition of that bass player is Sir Paul McCartney.
and then you try learning Another Day
Peter Hook
Or Lee Sklar
Who learned from James Jameson
@@koba5152 Absolutely.
can tell im a bass player myself with how much more i enjoyed listening to your "too much" take than the final product lol
One guy has been on my mind today. Andy Rourke. He was one of the best bass players of our generation. Always played the CORRECT thing on his lines, those lines were delicately build around guitar parts.
underrated, but if you know you know. his work on meat is murder is fantastic
chordally, he was wonderfully inventive. Also built in some excellent syncopation. Always supporting the groove, always playing with enough bite, Rourke was ace.
"You never annoy someone being to simple on bass" ❤
Too
The "too busy" bassline didn't sound too bad when it was in the mix without the vocals, but it would have absolutely stepped on the singer's toes. Just goes to show how dependent on the mix a good bassline is
Danny speaks the truth. Bass should tie the melody and the rhythm together. Get busy when the guitars are simple, back off when the guitars get busy and when in doubt, play what the singer is singing. And remember, you are free to move about the neck. A little stroll is good for the constitution. I think a Brit said that or something.
As a guitarist, playing bass in a band really taught me the difference in roles between the two instruments. That’s when I graduated to being a bassist… rather than a guitarist who plays a bass. You sort of think of it as the mid point between the melodic instruments like guitars and keyboards and the percussion instruments like drums.
Yeah, you’re holding down the chords for most of the time, but you can also pepper it with fills like a drummer would, but your role is to hold it all together. Everyone looks to you for stability.
"difference in roles between the two instruments" what's missing here is "in a specific musical style". It's really about style and cliches. If you wand to sound metal, you have to do certain things. If you wand to sound folk, you have to do other things. It is not about instruments, it is about musical styles.
Yep, the bassist is the glue, not the glitter.
@@oldunclemickTrue, but paradoxically, he's the glitter *because* he's the glue.
Very awesome take.
I'd also like to add that, from the standpoint of a drummer and guitar player, the bass is cool as hell. You're like a stringed bass drum frfr. And you are also OP as shit! You can dictate SO MUCH as a bass player! The feel of the song is one such thing; all you gotta do is play differently, play shorter, slappa da bass, not play anything at all and then do a slide and drop in, etc.
No one bass should have all that PAAAWWAAH! (Shout-out to Kanye)
I didn't realize it until this video that none of the guitarists I've been in bands with have sisters.
Or so they say… not their first behs player rodeo I guess?!
My guitarist from a band I quit had one, in fact, she was one of the singers. However, she was around 16 and I was 22 at the time and I also think Scott Pilgrim as a character is kinda cringe, so that possibility was immediately out of the window.
Best advice, just keep playing because you love it. 🤘😎
I would definitely donate a bit of money to you if the country in which I live in did not have an economy as shite as that of Turkey :/ I first started watching your content since the Yorkshire accent really took my attention but ever since then you've made my day several times with your unique style of humor and behs playing. Keep on rocking Danny, thanks for the vids
This advice can go to all musicians by the way, not just bass. A mature guitar player isn't trying to be Yngwie, they're adding to the song.
Unless it's an Yngwie song, in which case they should be. It's all about context. A mature guitar player knows when to step on the gas and when to just play the changes.
Sounded great! Loved all the examples of ways to play. I got a compliment the other day "drums and bass are locked in and grooving" from a bass player. Best compliment I can get. Band was "tight" also a great compliment.
Enjoy watching
Thanks for the tips.
Finally. Sensible to the kids learning the instrument, and it's role. Remember, we are the rock on which the church is built.
The same can be applied to drums and guitar, been in bands since I was 18 and main song writer in most of them. Biggest issue I have always had is there is always a guitarist that thinks he should play 100% of the time in a song or a drummer that wants to do loads of weird drum beats, rather than look at the song as a whole and work with what's best for the song
These last few vids have been epic. Thanks.
should be titled "how to be an incredible BEHS player"
YES! more videos like this please
BEHS BALLS 👏🏻
0:59 that’s banger racing . Fanx For Askin
I've been playing with a wide variety of drum loops on RUclips, and its really helped me find my rhythm and groove and what I like playing to. Doom Sludge and Stoner metal are great and have alot of potential for fills and improvising.
You're an amazing BEHS player and your videos are always inspiring. Hope to hear your new material soon, I'm sure you're overflowing of great ideas everywhere in your head!
Dude your channel has made me excited and interested in bass playing like no other since first learning who Primus is. I'd sub to a bass course from you
Thanks! Do Leland Sklar's bass tone from Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe!
Thanks, Danny! You're the behst!
How to be an incredible bass player:
First of all: having an impeccable rhythm. In second place: having an impeccable beat. Finally, having an impeccable tempo.
After that, the rest is the rest.
This is precisely what I aim to do. I play primarily at church, and I try to keep my lines and fills simple and clean. Sometimes though, that itch to string a 10-12 note movement is too strong.
This is some of the best behs advice on RUclips. Keep preaching the truth… even if you don’t like jazz. 🤪
Absolutely Right
Fuck yeah
Well done my friend 🙋🇬🇧🇮🇹
Bæhs brothers and sisters unite!
Thanks
Very Tasty Bassline Danny, not overplaying is a great, easy to over do it.... drumm a great line into them and then wow them with variations and fills. Early on in my bass playing career I love adding fills, which helps fill up some space sparingly!
Anyone can play , the trick is putting them in the right order at the right time. I was also a BEHS player back in the day, now getting back into the home arena rock type of playing. I enjoy your videos
My bass journey is an eternal swing between "I can play more complicated stuff!" and "Oh shit, that's too much, chill out, dude"
Danny, I love your behs line starting around 2:42 -- it doesn't sound at all "overplayed. It seems to fit perfectly with the rhythm of the rest of the song at that part of the song. Your versatility with being able to place virtually *anything* on the behs in my inspirations. When I grow up, I want to be as good as you. Although, at 72 years of age right now, I'd better get working on that..... Truthfully, I wish I had your sense of tasteful utility on the behs, in all its myriad forms.
Rodeo and Stetson hats go hand in hand.
The Nerves!! Danny you amaze me at every turn 🍻🙌🏻
Thanks!
Love your no BS approach as always
Danny, would you consider another run on the sold out merch? Love your channel.
Yep! Everything will be restocked plus new designs added. If you can click the 'back in stock request' button it helps us predict quantities and sizes. Thanks.

U Capsulize the bass artisan journey very well. I relate to "Continuous Betterment" acknowledging & respecting each individual(s) unique pathway. GOAL: Enjoyment....... Thx.
I could watch you play my generation all day man
Well said!! A band is the king!
A person with realistic views on worldly matters; grounded. Good stuff.
Yes! finally a real bass player on youtube :)
yes
Just the Right amount of Behs….
Hi Danny, you taught me drums around 4 years ago, great to see you do rlly well!🙏😍
BEHS!
BEHS!!
You're an inspiration, cool dude
I love this guy, he really does inspire me to do better. Cheers
Played bass in several bands from age 21 to 40. It's been about 6 years now and I'm starting to show some side effects of not jamming with other human beings. Sucks.
I love your shorts! Funny and interesting. Informative and inspiring. Thanks for doing what you do bro.
Nice singing at the end!😮👏
Hey, I really liked that song, good on you Danny boy!
Hope you're enjoying the Bass VI friend!
Behs Behs Behs Behs 🔥
Hi I am a metal bass player in a 80s metal band…and thats good
I think it’s good practice is before you start playing, listen, and take the time to actively imagine something. The number one mistake is to just go into your typical set of licks and arpeggios, while often the most inspired things are done with more of a purpose
Such wise words ❤❤❤❤
53 year old beginner here who is learning through SBL, who are excellent teachers BTW. But you are my favourite behs RUclips person by far. Cannot wait for the bass IV content. I could listen to bass IV songs all day and can't wait until I'm good enough or rich enough to get one myself.
I ❤ listening to cricket on the radio...and Behs of course 😂
Your're my Hero ! 🤩 What you play at 2'38 is just incredible. I like it to death
Thumbs up for Walking Out on Love
Wonderful video
Being given a Fender VI is wild 🥶🔥💞💞
The best advice I get from watching you is that you've got to keep your eyes superglued to the fretboard as much as possible.
felt like missing some information but quite fun
Nice of Cal (sic?) to give you the Squier Danny, cant wait to hear it mate!
BEHS!!!
You're cool m8!
So inspirational hehehe Thank you Danny ^> ^
So true this video. It's all about the song first, Elvis Presley and Kurt Cobain said it as well.
Think the best kind of bass player and player could be is one that can do anything and fit in with any genre
I couldn't keep up with Scots bass course's ha' ...your vids are a lot of funky fun, you certainly put the Behs in to the Bass ' ...love that Squire VI
your shirt has handles 😎😎😎😎
Plus he can double as a referee.
Spot on Danny. Can't be doing with all that slappy tappy stuff even though I love a bit of the funk. It's all about finding the music in the song. As Charlie Watts said about drumming, but it applies to behs too - stay in time and stay out of the way.
the Nerves sound pretty good, gotta check them out further
My Behs Philosophy is either
Fascination Street by the Cure (good to learn since it is a solud Bass VI line)
Or John Paul Jones/ Ben Shepherd. Sometimes the Behs in Led Zeppelin and Soundgarden is hard to notice because they are perfectly weaving the Drum rhythm and guitar lead into 1 sound.
They each made their guitarists sound so much better.
James Jameson is like too.
(A subtle request for Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye).
Sincerely
Mike B. B. From Philly, P.A. U.S.A.
Editing rly good in this one. Barely any dead air. Still probably needs some images to flash on screen while you are talking, just to give something that makes each shot a little more unique and show what you are talking about. Also random zooms are always good for help keeping people hooked.
My tip for you is use that Rickenbacker!
I would've thrown in a high A Note or two just for variation
Danny is a really beautiful singer
I usually try to fill when the drummer does, or when i feel that a drum fill should happen. I try not to do a ton of moving around during vocals unless it's a pretty high tempo song. I don't during guitar solos either, unless we're picking/plucking/slapping the same rythm.
Show Danny some love you behssists
I think the age old question of what makes a good bass player is infinitely simpler then anyone realizes. Serve the music. Thats it. If you're in a rock band, and just hang back, and make your bandmates sound great then you're doing great. If you're in a funk group, and you're playing lightning fast slap licks then you're doing great. If you're playing in a jazz band, and you're playing slow, melodic grooves in the pocket then you're great. If you're in a metal group, and you're playing really technical riffs then you're great. It doesn't matter what you're doing so long as you're serving the music, and putting your whole soul into it. We are musicians, and entertainers first, and foremost. So do what you do with love, and love what you do. Because if you don't the crowd will never love your music. Simple as that in my opinion.
Rodeo is a sport where filterless youngsters get on backs of wild bulls and broncos to prove they aren't scared of dying and possibly win a cash prize and an oversized belt buckle for bragging rights. It's pretty amazing stuff, actually. Give it a look.
Yep, it often gets voted the most dangerous sport in America (bull riding). Damn things weigh right around a ton. Bronc riding is very dangerous too though.
Love the sound of your Jazz BEHS. Thanks for showing us how to lay down a groove on the BEHS. To be a great BEHS player, you gotta be able to lay down great grooves. BTW, a rodeo involves cowboys riding horses and roping and branding calves.
Actually they don't brand calves in rodeos. The main events are bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback bronc riding, bulldogging (aka steer wrestling), team roping, barrel racing, and calf roping.
Nice
0:35 I like the jaco reference 💀💀
Yer a true mentch, Danny. Sadly, I cannot send you a bit of cash as I am baned from paypal, but that won't stop me from buying a bit of the merch. Stay strong, my brother in bass.
Back in the 1980's, my mind was blown by Robbie Shakespeare. Though not a musician, when my marriage exploded I bought a pawn shop behs so I could zone out playing along with Robbie, Flabba, and their rock steady forebears. These are the greats who came to mind when I watched your vid.
If you're gonna play something busy play up by the neck so it's less forward in the mix
Amazing advice, fully agree. Join a band and play. Cheers
